HAPPY-PROGRAMMERS-DAY.jpg

Welcome to Programmers' Day!

The Day of the Programmer (in Russian: День программиста) is a Russian professional day that is celebrated on the 256th (hexadecimal 100th, or the 28th) day of each year (September 13 during common years and on September 12 in leap years). It is officially recognized in Russia.[1][2]

The number 256 (28) was chosen because it is the number of distinct values that can be represented with an eight-bit byte, a value well-known to programmers.[3] 256 is also the highest power of two that is less than 365, the number of days in a common year.

Syracuse Football: Only 6 former Orange players remain in NFL (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

I guess six is better than none for the Syracuse football team. ITLH breaks down what Orange players are still in the NFL and what they did in Week 1 of the NFL.
Believe it or not, that’s all that remains after the animal ritual sacrifice better known as NFL roster cuts. Alas that’s how the NFL works and former Syracuse football players are well aware of the process.

Although Cuse fans would like to make the argument that quality is better than quantity. 33% of the Orange players in the NFL are on the New York Giants. That’s of course Justin Pugh who is one of the better offensive linemen in football. He’s due for a massive contract extension at the end of the season by the Giants or someone else.

While the other player is also in the trenches, just on the defensive side of the ball. That’s Jay Bromley who we talked too after the 2017 NFL Draft several months ago.

While the star of HBO’s Hard Knocks Cameron Lynch didn’t play in Week 1 due to Hurricane Irma’s impact on the state of Florida. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.

Perhaps the biggest former Orange star in the NFL today is Riley Dixon. Oh did you think I was
going to say someone else? We’ll get there.

Syracuse Football Report Card Week 2 Middle Tennessee State (itlh.com; Carey)

The Syracuse football team fell to 1-1 after a stunning 30 to 23 loss to the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. ITLH hands out their weekly report card.
The Syracuse football squad suffered a tough defeat on Saturday at the hands of former Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer. Shafer, of course is the defensive coordinator for the Blue Raiders who defeated Syracuse by a score of 30-23. The Orange offense was stymied all day by Shafer and his defensive schemes. Say what you will about his time as head coach at Syracuse, but Shafer certainly can coach up a defense.

Eric Dungey didn’t look like himself as Shafer disguised his blitz’s and Syracuse’s gunslinger was running for his life all day. However, Dungey seems to be often neglecting the middle of the field a lot and struggles to go through his progressions to find the open man. The combination of those two things kept the Orange’s daunted passing game in check all day.

On defense, the Orange played very well and were disruptive in the first half. Syracuse was getting to Middle Tennessee quarterback Brent Stockstill with some regularity, but in the second half they tired out because the offense could not sustain success. Syracuse’s secondary struggled mightily in the second half giving up some chunk play touchdowns. The worst of these coming on the first play of the fourth quarter, when Stockstill hit Ty Lee for a 48-yard Touchdown.

On special teams Syracuse also looked terrible. In the middle of the first quarter, long snapper Matt Keller sent a snap flying over the head of punter Sterling Hofrichter, who recovered the ball and ran out of the back on the end zone conceding a safety. The game changing play came when Syracuse return man Sean Riley muffed a punt at the 4:20 mark in the third quarter and Middle Tennessee recovered. The Blue Raiders then scored a touchdown three plays later.

Watch- Will Syracuse Football ever achieve 1987-level success again? (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

Saturday at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse University honored the 30th anniversary of the undefeated 1987 team that jump-started a program that had gone through some tough times.

The question many in the crowd undoubtedly had, can Syracuse get back to that level?

The simple answer is yes, but how?

The Orange Zone crew dives into that debate with F-M grad and top-10 Orange running back Damien Rhodes offering his commentary.

Film Room: Breaking down key plays from KU’s loss to CMU | Call it a Nightengale | KUsports.com (kusports.com; Nightengale)

Throughout all of last season, the defense was the strength of the Kansas football team, usually by a large margin over the offense.

But when the offense scored two touchdowns at the beginning of the third quarter, giving the Jayhawks some life on their comeback bid, the defense gave up scores on CMU’s next three possessions.

As I introduced last week, this will be a weekly breakdown where we’ll take a look at a few plays that might not be included in the main highlights, but they had a big impact on the outcome of the game:

Shane Morris remains calm under pressure
The tide of momentum was starting to shift at the beginning of the third quarter Saturday, when the Jayhawks scored touchdowns on their first two possessions.

After watching their lead drop and a three-and-out punt to open the second half, the Chippewas needed a response. On 2nd-and-6 from their own 31-yard line, Central Michigan senior quarterback Shane Morris dropped back and immediately felt pressure from KU defensive tackle Isi Holani, who blew past sophomore offensive lineman Logan Slaughter.

Morris moved up in the pocket, slipping a potential sack from Holani, and kept his eyes downfield. With only a split-second to release the ball ahead of a charging Daniel Wise, Morris fired a pass toward his left and connected with senior receiver Corey Willis for a first down. Willis broke a tackle after his catch, pushing the ball all the way up to the 50-yard line.
