Welcome to Eat a Hoagie Day!

The grinder, the sub and the hero, the po’boy and the Italian sandwich along with the torpedo are all recognized on National Eat a Hoagie Day on September 14.

The hoagie consists of meats, cheeses, vegetables, sauces and seasonings on a long roll of Italian or French bread. The origin of this giant sandwich is a bit of mystery.

The origin of this giant sandwich is a bit of mystery. The epicenter of the controversy seems to be eastern Pennsylvania where the DiCostanzas and DePalmas lay claim to being the first to make the hoagie. One family claims to have been making the sandwich since 1923 and the other since 1925. But who has the proof?

Another story from the Philadelphia area during World War I describes large Italian sandwiches shipyard workers would bring to work wrapped in newspaper to help them get through their long days. The massive sandwiches were nicknamed “hoggies” because anyone eating them at one sitting would have to be a hog. The transformation of the word to “hoagie” is explained by the Philadelphia accent which often exaggerates vowel sounds.

Syracuse vs. Central Michigan Fearless Prediction & Game Preview (collgefootballnews.com; Fiutak)

Can Syracuse get this back on track in a hurry?

The Orange started out the season just fine, but that was against Central Connecticut State. And then came last week, when all of a sudden, the offense couldn’t get the job done at home against Middle Tennessee.

So with at LSU, at NC State, Pitt, Clemson, at Miami, and at Florida State up next, to go along with another trip at Louisville, lose this week, and the season is over.

Central Michigan is coming off a blowout over Kansas, but that was the first of four road games in five dates and six in eight.

The talent is there on the Chippewas to make a whole lot of noise in MAC play, but it’s got a nasty schedule of its own. Beat Syracuse, though, and all of a sudden, CMU could really turn into this year’s WMU.

One Reason Why Central Michigan Will Win
Now that’s the Shane Morris Michigan fans were hoping for.

The one-time super-recruit didn’t work out for the Wolverines, but he showed huge against Kansas, ripping apart the Jayhawks with five touchdowns passes and 467 yards.

Mark Chapman caught eight passes for 168 yards and three scores, Corey Willis caught eight balls for 140 yards and a touchdown – but got hurt – and everything else worked, too, starting with a brilliant second quarter from Morris.

Syracuse Football: First look at the Central Michigan Chippewas (itlh; Esden Jr)

Time to turn the page to the next opponent for the Syracuse football team, the Central Michigan Chippewas. ITLH previews the next opponent here
I know it’s hard Syracuse football fans, but lets try to move on from the debacle of Week 2. With a new week brings new hope that the Orange can get back on track.

Week 3 Central Michigan will travel to the Carrier Dome to play the Orange on Saturday September 16th at 3:30 p.m.

It has been a roller coaster season thus far for the Chippewas who needed triple overtime to overcome Rhode Island in Week 1 at home. Although they played even better on the road in Kansas winning handily 45 to 27.

Here are the nitty gritty stats per Central Michigan’s official athletics page:
  • The Chippewas have the 40th highest scoring offense and third overall in the MAC conference with over 37 points per game.
  • While defensively they possess the 77th ranked defense in the FBS, seventh overall in the MAC conference allowing 27 points per contest.

Syracuse Football: Eric Dungey- What Makes Syracuse’s QB So Good? (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Football’s Eric Dungey is considered a star around these parts. But what makes fans think this? We break down why he’s so good (when he’s healthy).
The Syracuse Football team has a heck of a quarterback in Eric Dungey. The kid can flat out play, and is smart with the football. His one flaw: he can’t seem to stay healthy. Concussions have caused him to miss part of the last two seasons.

His record at Syracuse is 8-10, according to FoxSports.com, if you include the unofficial start (Terrel Hunt’s Achilles injury) against Rhode Island in 2015 that jump started his career. Although his overall record doesn’t scream ‘star’ player, his numbers in those games have been great throughout.

Don’t believe me or you just need evidence? Check out these ACC Conference ranks (as of the end of last year) from Cuse.com:

ACC Ranks
  • 2nd among active ACC quarterbacks in career rushing yards- 644 (now 695)
  • 2nd among active ACC quarterbacks in career rushing touchdowns- 11 (now 13)
  • 3rd among active ACC quarterbacks in career passing yards- 3,977 (now 4,305)
  • 3rd among active ACC quarterbacks in career passing touchdowns- 26 (now 29)
  • Stands 3rd among active quarterbacks in the ACC in career total offensive yardage- 4,621 yards (now 5,000)

Elite 11 Tommy DeVito, Syracuse's top QB prospect since McNabb, well-prepped for the pocket (DO; Gutirrez)

Syracuse’s most heralded quarterback prospect since Donovan McNabb may not play a down of football this year. He didn’t start on the Don Bosco (New Jersey) High School varsity team until two years ago and has never sipped alcohol, his father said.

For much of high school, he fell under the radar of Power 5 coaches. His dad said he arrived at Syracuse after turning down offers from Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Wake Forest, among others, because he wanted to play for Dino Babers’ up-tempo offense and lead the coach’s charge in rebooting the program. Two four-star offensive linemen have since committed to SU.

He went from a top-1600 recruit to near the top of his class, as the No. 8 pocket passer in the Class of 2017. He was an Under Armour All-American and Elite 11 finalist.

Yet in 2017, he has yet to take a snap and Babers and teammates have offered little insight on him, so it’s still too early to predict his future.

Now, SU’s (1-1) top newcomer is on campus, where there remains a general cloudiness on how his talents will translate in the Atlantic Coast Conference or when he will take his first snap. DeVito signed at SU well aware of the program’s struggles, declining attendance and Eric Dungey’s success. He signed despite pressure to change plans. Now, he awaits his time to play.

Shane Morris-led Central Michigan focused on offensive execution (freep.com; Folsom)

It's all about execution, both in practice and during games.

That's what Central Michigan coach John Bonamego told the Free Press on Tuesday when asked how CMU was able to start 2-0, which includes a 45-27 road win over Kansas last week.

"We emphasize it's more about how we compete, commit to the process and improve ourselves every single day," Bonamego said. "Just going out and executing to the best our of abilities. We feel if we play our best – and we don't beat ourselves – we're difficult to beat. If we play to our capabilities, we can play with anybody."

The Chippewas hope to make it two in a row against Power-5 schools, as they visit Syracuse on Saturday (3:30 p.m., ACC Extra).

One of the players who has been executing at a high clip since spring practice is quarterback Shane Morris, a fifth-year senior who transferred from Michigan earlier this year.

He is 12th in the country with 693 passing yards, completing 53-for-86 attempts with six touchdowns and one interception. He threw for 467 yards and five TDs against Kansas, a huge improvement over the 226 yards he had against FCS opponent Rhode Island in the opener.

Football Notebook: Prophetic Cox Calls It (cmuchippewas.com; Sneddon)

Josh Cox called it, because he’s seen it before.

Cox, a senior defensive back on the Central Michigan football team, told quarterback Shane Morris before Saturday’s 45-27 win at Kansas that Morris would throw five touchdown passes.

Morris did indeed toss five TD passes, finishing the game with 467 yards on 28-of-37 passing in just his second start as a Chippewa. Morris earned the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week Award.

“I don’t know why I told him he was going to throw five, I just knew that once he had confidence they won’t be able to stop him,” Cox said.

Cox, perhaps more than any of Morris’ teammates, knows of what he speaks. The two were teammates at De La Salle High School in suburban-Detroit’s Warren, graduating together in 2013.

They met as freshmen at De La Salle, and bonded quickly as they started alongside each other in the defense backfield, Cox at cornerback, Morris at safety; and on offense, where Morris, the quarterback, threw to Cox, a wideout.

“He’s a really good quarterback, I’ve seen it in high school – once he gains his confidence, the man just goes on a tear.” Cox said. “I just had a feeling he was going to have a really good game.”

Morris’ yardage total against the Jayhawks was the third-highest in program history, and his five TD passes tied for the third-most in a game by a Chippewa.

Morris also ran for 32 yards, giving him 499 yards in total offense, the fourth-best such game in program history. He did not throw an interception and was not sacked.

Sciria: No quick fix for Syracuse University football (auburnpub.com; Sciria)

Did anyone really think Dino Babers was going to turn the Syracuse University football program around in less than two seasons? No, and sadly, Orange fans shouldn't expect any kind of quick fix.

Last Saturday's stunning loss to Middle Tennessee State is proof that Syracuse is a long ways from being a top 25 program and that games against non-power conference foes shouldn't be counted on as easy Ws.

You knew that Middle Tennessee was going to be up for this game since their defensive coordinator Scott Shafer was fired as Syracuse's coach less than two years ago. Revenge is a heck of a motivator.

Shafer did have some advantage knowing the Orange's personnel better than the average opponent (look back at when Jon Gruden's Tampa Bay Buccaneers thrashed his former team, the Oakland Raiders, in the Super Bowl) but Syracuse was a double-digit favorite for a reason — more talent and home field.

Beth Mowins inspires Syracuse women broadcasters on Monday Night Football (DO; Bomba)

Erin Fish sat perched on her couch, eyes trained toward her TV. The black leather couch was directly in front of the TV, separated only by the coffee table. Not even the plate of cookies sitting on the table could distract Fish from the screen. Then, she grabbed a blanket off the back of the couch and settled in.

Fish, an S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications master’s student in television, radio and film, purposefully set aside this time to watch Monday Night Football. Around 10:30 p.m., the Los Angeles Chargers kicked off to the Denver Broncos for the NFL’s second game of MNF.

“It’s a little close to my bedtime,” Fish said. “Usually I would be asleep by 11 or 11:30. But this is important.”

This night, Fish’s interest is rooted less on the field and more in the broadcast booth. Standing there was Beth Mowins, the first woman to call a regular season NFL game in 30 years and only the second ever. Gayle Sierens was the first, calling a regionally broadcast Chiefs-Seahawks game in 1987.

This broadcast was beamed to millions of homes across the country, but perhaps no city was watching and listening more closely than Syracuse. Mowins is a native of Syracuse, and she attended graduate school at Newhouse.

Fake CNY millionaire who ran dating scams, defrauded people is back at it, police say (PS; Moses)

Donald William Vault said he was a millionaire who is looking to buy a house near Schenectady and hoped to find love on an online dating site.

The only problem is Donald William Vault, or Don Vault as he is known online, is not a millionaire. He doesn't exist.

Don Vault really is a convicted felon named Donald E. Van Valkenburg Jr. who was released from state prison less than two years ago after creating a fake persona and swindling money from a woman he was dating in Central New York, according to state police.

"You have lived this phony and fraudulent life for some time," then-Onondaga County Judge Anthony Aloi told Van Valkenburg at his sentencing in 2012. "You have lived in some fantasy land."

Van Valkenburg, 50, of Fayetteville, is back to his fraud, swindling and dating scams, state police said.

He created and used his fake persona to facilitate friendships with about a half dozen female real estate agents in the Schenectady area, according to state police Investigator George Bird. The real estate agents took Van Valkenburg to tour homes for sale that he had no intentions to purchase, he said.
