Welcome to National Mammography Day!

National Mammography Day is observed annually on the third Friday in October as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This day serves as a reminder to all women that the best defense is early detection. A mammogram can often detect a problem before there is any outward physical sign. Make sure you get your regular checkups.

Syracuse Orange vs. Miami Hurricanes Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com; Staley)

When looking at the schedule before the season, some probably though Miami’s game against Syracuse would be a bit of a cakewalk. But after last weekend, assuming anything close to that would be a mistake.

Syracuse is fresh off of arguably the biggest upset of the season thus far, following a 27-24 home win over then-No. 2 Clemson last Friday night. Now the Orange will look to knock off a top-10 (and undefeated) team in back-to-back weeks.

Miami moved up to No. 8 in this week’s AP poll following its 25-24 win over Georgia Tech, courtesy of Michael Badgley’s game-winning field goal. He was named ACC Specialist of the Week for his efforts.

Saturday will be the first time Syracuse and Miami, who were former Big East foes, have played each other since 2003. The Hurricanes have a 15-7 edge in the series and have won the past five meetings.

Miami Hurricanes Football: Injury report for Syracuse game (stateoftheu.com; Underwood)

As standard on Thursdays, the Miami Hurricanes released this week’s injury report ahead of the Syracuse Game. Here it is from Miami Athletics:

Miami Football Injury Report

Miami vs. Syracuse October 21, 2017

PROBABLE
OL Navaughn Donaldson (right lower extremity)

OUT

DB Dee Delaney (right lower extremity)

OUT FOR SEASON

WR Evidence Njoku (right lower extremity)

This release confirms yesterday’s report that freshman WR Evidence Njoku had torn his ACL and would miss the season. This piece by Stefan Adams covers that report.

Additionally, starting RG Navaughn Donaldson is now listed as probable, the best listing possible on the injury report. His return would strengthen the offensive line.

Lastly, grad transfer CB Dee Delaney is listed as out for this week. While Mark Richt said that Delaney and others were basically day to day with their injuries, this is the 2nd consecutive game that Delaney will miss. There was an ESPN report ahead of last week’s game that Delaney would be out for 6-8 weeks with a leg injury, and we’re nearly halfway to the lower boundary of that reported absence window. So, maybe ESPN was right? We’ll see if Delaney comes back next week or not.

Miami Syracuse, Divide and Conquer - Weekend Picks (stateoftheu.com; Pickens)

Miami is playing Syracuse for the first time since 2003, but the 1998 game is still tattooed in my brain. Donovan McNabb and the Cuse destroyed Miami 66-13 in the Carrier Dome. The embarrassing loss helped fuel Miami the following week. Miami beat UCLA in the Orange Bowl behind a 299-yard performance from Edgerrin James, arguably the game that marked the resurgence of the program from the ashes of probation. The Canes made sure to seek revenge on Syracuse from 1999-2003, outscoring the Orange 196-30 in five straight wins.

I have picked Syracuse often this season and was impressed by close losses to NCST and LSU. I was concerned that Miami might overlook QB Eric Dungey, who is one of the most underrated players in the nation. Syracuse has two stud WR in Erwin Philips and Steve Ishmael. Fortunately for the Canes, Syracuse upset Clemson last week in an emotional win, ensuring that Mark Richt won’t have trouble convincing his team to be ready this Saturday. Syracuse hasn’t won on the road yet this season.

Divide and Conquer. In classic coaching terms - Take it one game at a time. That’s my motto for the rest of this season. Miami has every possible goal still within reach. A Coastal title, an ACC Championship victory, and even a spot in the College Football Playoff are all possible. With six games remaining, Miami fans aren’t sure how big to dream. The Canes are absolutely good enough to win out, but are also vulnerable enough to lose to most teams left on the schedule.

Syracuse Football Recruiting Update: Will Clemson win pay dividends? (itlh.com; Carey)

How did the biggest win in the 21st century for the Syracuse football team affect recruiting? ITLH did some research to find out the answer.
The Syracuse football team had their huge win over Clemson in the Carrier Dome this past Friday by a score of 27-24.

Much has been said about the big upset win in terms of what this means for Dino Babers and his tenure here at Syracuse.

Our very own Paul “Boy Green” Esden is calling upon the school to extend Babers.
The hashtag, #PayDino, has been a huge topic of conversation. So if Orange Nation so chooses they can support the cause below.
#PayDino campaign is official! Support the cause and WE WANT BABERS! #CLEMvsCUSE #oitnf #Cuse #DomeDudes #PayDino

— Paul Andrew Esden Jr (@BoyGreen25) October 16, 2017

A win against the defending national champions and number two team in the nation will get people coming to bat for you. And Dino Babers has people coming to bat for him.

Not only does Babers seem to have a great football mind, but he is charismatic and always makes for a great interview. Since the big win last Friday, coach Babers has been featured on Mike and Mike, The Paul Finebaum show, and The Gottlieb show, just to name a few.

Hurricanes QB Malik Rosier looking for fast start against Syracuse (sun-sentinel.com; Chirinos)

The Hurricanes’ last-second, comeback wins against Florida State and Georgia Tech were exciting and certainly, once finished, pretty fun for players and fans.

However, if Miami quarterback Malik Rosier has his way on Saturday against Syracuse, the Hurricanes won’t need him to lead them down the field for a potential game-winning drive in the game’s final minutes.

“As slow as we’ve been starting the first couple halves the last two games, we can’t let that happen again,” Rosier said. “These guys [at Syracuse], if you watch them, I think the first two drives, they wound up putting 14 [points] on Clemson. So these guys can score. They can score fast. They can score at any moment. So we have to be able to keep up with them. We have to be able to score. We have to be able to put pressure on them as well.”
Against both Florida State and Georgia Tech, Rosier struggled early. At the half against the Seminoles, he’d thrown for just 14 yards. Against the Yellow Jackets, he had a slightly better 96 yards, but 76 of those came in the final two minutes of the half.

The Next Step for SU Football – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

Over the past two seasons, Syracuse football has had a pair of big time wins in the Carrier Dome. Beating #17 Virginia Tech and stunning #2 Clemson were great victories for SU, but there is still a long way to go in the rebuild process. As Dino Babers often says, his team is trying to be consistently good, not occasionally great. So far in his tenure, they have been the latter. In fact, under Babers, the Orange has won just two road contests. Those victories came at Connecticut and Boston College, two underwhelming environments. A win at #8 Miami would really speed-up the rebuild process.

Another thing Syracuse has to do to become “consistently good” is win the games it’s supposed to win. Week two against Middle Tennessee State was a bad showing for the Orange. I know Scott Shafer’s return was a variable, but the bottom line is SU looked outmatched in a game it should not have been. The good news is that Wake Forest and Boston College come to Syracuse later this season. Those are two games the Orange needs to win rather convincingly. This team has to establish a dominant home field advantage. After last week’s upset over Clemson, fan support should be strong to close out the season. Finishing the year with positive momentum will help attendance in the early part of next season and beyond.

Winning a game against a top-25 opponent on the road is just what the Orange needs. I don’t think it happens on Saturday against Miami, but I do think it happens soon. It’s crazy how much a single win can do for a program. After a lackluster start to the year, it now seems likely that Syracuse will make a bowl game.

This program has to get to a point where making a bowl game is the expectation. Once it gets there, Syracuse can worry about competing for conference titles. For now, the Orange should still be focused on gaining respect around the nation and beating the teams it’s supposed to beat. After all, SU is a 16.5 point underdog on Saturday in South Florida. That number seems a little high, but it’s up to the Orange to go out and continue to prove the doubters wrong.

Meeting Miami: Three players to watch for the Hurricanes on Saturday – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

After an incredible upset of #2 Clemson last week gave Syracuse one of its most important wins in program history and put it over .500, the Orange is back in action this Saturday and another tough opponent is staring it in the face. SU heads south for a date with the #8 Miami Hurricanes on Saturday. The Canes come into the game undefeated and coming off back-to-back ACC wins over Florida State and Georgia Tech. With Mark Richt’s club riding high, it’s important for the Orange faithful to know what to expect from it. With that being said, let’s meet Miami and three of its key players to watch.

Malik Rosier
Taking over for a collegiate quarterback the caliber of Brad Kaaya was never going to be easy, but Rosier has emerged as a great successor to the position. A dual-threat quarterback, Rosier uses both his legs and arm to his advantage for the Miami offense. He’s scored 14 touchdowns (12 passing, 2 rushing) so far this season which is the best mark for a Hurricanes quarterback through the first 5 games of a season since Ken Dorsey in 2002. Keep in mind, Dorsey was a Heisman candidate during that season. While Rosier probably isn’t on that level quite yet, he’s the leader of this Miami offense. Standing at 6-foot-1, 216 pounds, he’s got pretty good size, especially for a dual-threat guy. The redshirt junior had a nice game last week against Georgia Tech, passing for nearly 300 yards and a touchdown. If he can do something similar to that this week versus the Orange, SU fans should take notice of the Alabama native.

Travis Homer

Whenever a starter goes down, it’s crucial that a backup step in and get the job done. Homer, a sophomore running back, has done exactly that this season in place of Mark Walton. Coming into the season, Walton was expected to be one of the better running backs in the ACC, but when he went down with a season-ending ankle injury two weeks ago versus Florida State, Homer filled in wonderfully. He’s rushed for 382 yards on the season and that’s only come on 45 carries, meaning that he’s averaging over eight yards per carry which is a fantastic average for any running back, but especially a guy who started the season as a backup. Not only had he stepped up even before Walton went down, but he put on a show in his first career start last week versus Georgia Tech.

ACC Week 8 picks: Can Syracuse upset another top-10 team? (espn; Adelson/Hale)

Syracuse and Boston College pulled two huge upsets in the ACC in Week 7. What's in store for Week 8? Andrea Adelson and David Hale make their picks. Visit our college football PickCenter page for additional information on these games and many more.

Louisville (4-3, 1-3) at Florida State (2-3, 2-2), noon, ESPN

David Hale: The perfect fix for a struggling Florida State offense is the dismal Louisville defense. James Blackmanhas made some nice strides in each of the past two games, and this week the Seminoles will actually look like a functional unit. FSU 28, Louisville 24

Syracuse (4-3, 2-1) at No. 8 Miami (5-0, 3-0), 3:30 p.m., ESPN

David Hale: Two big questions here: Can Syracuse match the emotional energy it had last week against Clemson? And is Miami healthy enough to keep winning? I’m more confident in the latter than the former. Miami 30, Syracuse 24

Andrea Adelson: Syracuse is 0-7 all-time against AP Top 10-ranked Miami teams and has won multiple games over AP Top 10 opponents just once, in 1959. Eric Dungey and the offense will be able to make some plays, but watch out Travis Homer to make some big plays. Miami 28, Syracuse 20

Central New York to Amazon: Put your HQ here and save billions (PS; Moriarty)

Central New York's pitch to be the home of Amazon's second headquarters starts with a big number: $23 billion.

That's how much the region's economic development officials say the online retailer could save over 20 years by putting the headquarters here compared with what the company spends on its headquarters in Seattle. And its savings compared with major metropolitan areas like Boston and Denver could be at least $11.7 billion over the same period, they said.

"Compared to the closest competitive second tier metro, Pittsburgh, Central New York's compared operational savings over 20 years is still $1.4 billion," states the proposal to Amazon from Syracuse-based CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity.

The organization, which serves as the Syracuse area's business leadership organization and chamber of commerce, said the operational savings would result from a comparative lower cost of labor and real estate in the Central New York market. The cost of living index in Central New York is 50 percent less than that of Seattle or Boston and 5 percent less than Pittsburgh, it said.

"Paired with an exceptional quality of life, and the magnetic draw of Amazon, this is an ideal environment for talent attraction and retention for HQ2," CenterState said.
