Halloween is an annual holiday, celebrated each year on October 31, that has roots in age-old European traditions. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints; soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween.

Virtual reality gives Syracuse edge in quarterback development (DO; Bloss)

Rex Culpepper stood in the office of Syracuse’s quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Sean Lewis’ and spun in a circle. It was January 2016 and, for the first time in his life, the quarterback new to campus had a virtual reality headset fixed around his cranium. He had to find out if he could actually observe this temporary world in a full 360-degree view.

He could, and just about every day this past summer, he did. Culpepper saw the passing lanes and Syracuse’s offensive line from the perspective of the pocket. Looking down, he studied the quarterback’s footwork. When he turned around, he sometimes noticed players on the sidelines dancing, because the all-encompassing camera is always watching.

“When I came here and found out that we had VR, I was impressed because it’s so cutting edge,” said Culpepper, now a redshirt freshman. “Nowhere I had ever visited had virtual reality. Knowing how much emphasis these coaches put on the quarterbacks is like, ‘Wow, this is a big deal.’”

Dino Babers promised to recruit New York state when he got hired. Nearly 2 years in, he’s received mixed reviews. (DO; Graham)

At the New York State High School Football Coaches Association clinic in February, coaches gathered to hear Dino Babers, Syracuse’s head coach and the keynote speaker. They wanted to learn about the implementation of his trademark up-tempo offense. The talk was sold to high school coaches, one of them said, as an offensive lecture.

“He’s an offensive guy that put up all these big numbers at Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois,” said Bob Burns, head coach at defending AA state champion Troy High School, “and I was interested in listening to, schematically, how he attacks defenses. … He really didn’t go over any of that.”

The Daily Orange interviewed 14 high school football coaches from New York state about Babers and how he recruits players from New York, choosing coaches Babers seemed likeliest to interact with regularly. Included are those from major metropolitan areas like Rochester and Albany, those who have sent a player to Syracuse in the past seven years or who have produced a Division I football player in the last decade.

Syracuse football 'planted the seed' for 2017 season in locker room at Pitt last year (PS; Mink)

Dino Babers believes a turning point for his program came in the bowels of Heinz Field two days after last Thanksgiving.

The Syracuse football team walked into the visitors' locker room after a 76-61 loss at Pittsburgh when Babers made the unusual decision to not have any assistant coaches or staff members in the room when he addressed the team.

After speaking to the full group, Babers asked the seniors who were graduating to leave the room -- the returning members of the 2017 team were now his only audience.

"That," Babers said Monday morning at his weekly news conference ahead of Saturday's game at Florida State, " is where it all started.

Another walk-on added to FSU depth chart ahead of Syracuse game (tomahawknation.com; Visser)

The Florida State receiving corps continued to thin out last week, as Head Coach Jimbo Fisher announced that George Campbell would be lost for the remainder of the season. Campbell had been listed as the backup to Auden Tate, but that role is now occupied by redshirt-senior walk-on Jared Jackson. Jackson is not the only walk-on to make the two-deep roster at WR; he joins Justin Motlow, who is listed as Nyqwan Murray’s backup.

Freshman D.J. Matthews, the top slot reciever recruit in the country, remains absent from the depth chart entirely— both at WR and punt returner, as the latter is still listed as Tarvarus McFadden. Replacing Campbell as a backup kick returner is Amir Rasul.

ACC Power Rankings: Where does Syracuse football stand? (PS; Axe)

No. 1 Clemson
The Tigers bounced back from the tough loss at the Carrier Dome on Friday the 13th with a solid win over Georgia Tech out of the bye week.

Kelly Bryant finished with 274 yards and two touchdowns, and Clemson controlled the game.

They'll get an NC State team with something to prove this week as the Wolfpack will be looking to stay in the Atlantic Division hunt and the Top 25 rankings following a 35-14 loss at Notre Dame.

Syracuse football players encouraged to get shots for mumps (DO; Gutierrez)

Syracuse players are encouraged to get vaccinated for the current mumps outbreak on campus, head coach Dino Babers said Monday morning.

“We’ve taken shots,” he said. “It’s not mandatory. Our guys do what they do.”

In August, the mumps broke out at SU. There have since been 27 confirmed and 45 probable cases of the mumps among members of the university community. There are also two probable cases outside SU.

On Monday afternoon, Syracuse University Health Services sent an email to students advising them to visit the third measles, mumps and rubella booster clinic this Wednesday in Flanagan Gymnasium.

Last week, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory board unanimously voted to recommend a third dose for the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine for people who may be exposed to mumps outbreaks. Nearly 3,200 students received the vaccination last week.

Winner of N.C. State-Clemson showdown controls ACC Atlantic (journalnow.com; AP)

Another week, another showdown for No. 6 Clemson.

The Tigers (7-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) play Saturday at No. 20 North Carolina State (6-2, 4-0), their fourth game — third on the road — against a ranked opponent this season. The winner grabs control of the ACC Atlantic, while a loss by Clemson likely ends its chance of defending its national title.

Clemson has been in this spot several times the past few seasons and most always has come out on top.

“I feel like over these games we’ve figured out what kind of team we are,” sophomore linebacker Tre Lamar said. “We’re confident in the team we have and we’re confident in the pieces we have.”

The Tigers had a September to remember with wins over three top-15 teams at the time in Auburn , Louisville and Virginia Tech . They won games at Louisville and Virginia Tech by a combined score of 78-48 and turned expected showdowns into runaways by the third quarter.

Storm hits Northeast: Utilities say some could be without power for days (photos) (PS; AP)

A storm packing hurricane-force wind gusts and soaking rain brought trees and power lines crashing down early Monday, knocking out power for nearly 1.5 million homes and businessesand forcing hundreds of schools to close in New England.

Thousands of trees were toppled, some falling onto houses and cars. In New Hampshire, floodwaters swept away a house. In Maine, the state's largest utility warned residents to be prepared to be without electricity for up to a week.

New England bore the brunt of the storm, which brought sustained winds of up to 50 mph in spots. A gust of 130 mph was reported at the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire, while winds hit 82 mph in Mashpee on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

"It was really terrifying," said Rachel Graham, who described pine trees crashing nearby as she rode out the storm with her husband and their 2-year-old daughter in a yurt in Freeport, Maine. "It was a lot of crashes and bangs."

DO recruiting piece is way, way too dramatic.

It's surprising to the HS coaches that we lose in state kids to Ohio State? Really? Or that he wants to keep his offense under wraps schematically? C'mon.

Agree. Fredericks coach may have a valid point about not receiving at least a call back. But Burns talking about not getting much details about the offense and losing kids to Ohio State are just silly.

Unfortunately the DO lost a lot of good writers through graduation this year.
