Welcome to National Good Samaritan Day!

National Good Samaritan Day reminds us to help those in need by showing kindness and compassion. Whether a small act that seems inconsequential or something big that means life or death, selfless acts of compassion help make the world a better place and strengthen human bonds. The term "Good Samaritan" comes from the Parable of the Good Samaritan, a parable told by Jesus in Luke Chapter 10. In this parable, a Jewish traveler is left for dead on the side of the road and is twice passed by. He is finally helped by a Samaritan, someone with different beliefs from Jews that normally wouldn't interact with him. The Samaritan saw the wounded traveler's humanity and showed mercy by stopping to help. Today, anyone who stops to selflessly help others for whatever reason is seen as being a Good Samaritan

ACC Football Rx: Actual ACC Football News (accfootballrx.com; Hokie Mark)

From David Teel's interview with ACC Commissioner John Swofford:
Here are a couple of TV and bowl-related tidbits from that interview...

On the Upcoming ACC Network:
Swofford has not met new ESPN president James Pitaro, who recently replaced UNC alum John Skipper, but he raved about the network’s continuing work on the ACC linear channel, set to launch in August 2019.
Swofford said “ESPN has been just extremely aggressive in terms of the ACC channel and what needed to be done and what needs to be done. ...Production decisions, starting to talk about talent and programming.”

On Future ACC Bowl Tie-ins:
With two years remaining on contracts* with its bowl partners, the ACC has started to renegotiate those deals and explore potential new opportunities, including one at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.
Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich chairs the league’s bowl subcommittee, which also includes North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, Georgia Tech AD Todd Stansbury, Syracuse AD John Wildhack, Swofford and ACC senior associate commissioner for football Michael Strickland.
When Teel asked Swofford about the conference’s interest in a potential bowl partnership with the Big Ten at Wrigley Field, he replied:
"I will admit to being one that had some skepticism (about the Pinstripe) in the sense that, OK it’s cold, or can be," Swofford said. It’s in a baseball stadium, and are the Yankees going to treat it seriously? What we have found is that anything the Yankees do, they do first class, and that playing in Yankee Stadium is something special to fans and to players, and that while it might be cold, being in New York City around Christmas and New Year’s is a very positive experience for players and fans alike.
"So I no longer have any concerns about playing in a venue such as a Wrigley Field. There are only so many of those venues in sports. Chicago’s a great city, and it’s an iconic venue... The Chicago Bears played there for 40-some years, and in today’s world a 40,000-seat venue for that level of bowl game is probably the right size. There is an interest in Chicago if they indeed start that game."

* Except the Orange Bowl - that contract runs through the end of the CFP contract, 8 more years.

The Tar Heels join Duke, Virginia, Villanova, Boston College, Indiana, Temple, UConn, Syracuse, West Virginia and Rutgers on Richards' offer list.

Richards was a tight end and defensive end for the Fords last season, and he earned second-team All-Inter-Ac honors on the defensive line. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Richards caught two passes for 15 yards as a tight end last season, and he was also an interior presence for the Inter-Ac champion Haverford School boys basketball team.

In the 247Sports composite rankings, he's listed as an offensive tackle, and he's rated as a three-star recruit, the No. 13 player in Pennsylvania, the No. 66 offensive tackle nationally and No. 692 overall prospect in the Class of 2019.

Man with marijuana card flips car at Thruway toll booth while under influence (PS; O'Toole)

An Oneida County man was under the influence of marijuana and not paying attention when he flipped his car onto its roof at a Thruway toll booth this weekend in Verona, state police Sgt. Michael Page said.

Charles D. Whittier has a valid medical marijuana card, but Page said that card did not give him the legal right to drive his car while under the influence.

Whittier, 54, of Greenway New London Road in the city of Rome, told Trooper James Drager that he smokes marijuana to help with a medical condition, according to a police statement.

Whittier also told the trooper he was bending over and reaching for something in his gray Toyota Prius when he felt the car strike something, then flip over as he exited Interstate 90 West, Page said.
