For potential Carrier Dome renovations, experts suggest renovated roof, better WiFi (DO; Gutierrez)
With a decision to come by late spring on the Carrier Dome roof, per Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack, The Daily Orange asked several sports-business experts how the university could spruce up the venue. Their insight is based on industry best practices, trends across the college athletics landscape and research of their own. Most experts agreed an air conditioning system would be costly and probably not worth the investment. Experts also said the same in regards to a retractable roof.
Nonetheless, the Dome, built in 1980, is a key piece of the Syracuse skyline and one of the most recognizable structures in central New York. Here are some of their ideas on how SU could make the facility a better place.
The roof and exterior
A new or recently renovated roof will not drive fans to the game, said Nels Popp, an assistant professor of sport administration at North Carolina. But a well-designed roof contributes to the overall fan experience in that it contains the sound better, which would only add to the Dome’s nickname, “The Loud House.”
Beyond the roof, five experts agreed that a relatively cheap addition with a high payout would be exterior signage. A large “S” plastered on the stadium’s wall could be read from Interstate 81. Another orange “S” on the ground could function as a destination for visitors and a meeting spot for fans before games. Such signage gives fans a “sense of place and arrival,” said Rafi Kohan, author of “The Arena,” a book about sports stadiums.

Key takeaways from Syracuse football's Spring Preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)
The third Syracuse spring football game under the stewardship of Dino Babers was a combination of the first two. Like the first one under Babers, the game was not a true scrimmage, just a split of offense and defense that enabled the team to spend time on situational play. As in last year’s event, there was not a lot of offensive fireworks.
The biggest cheers on Friday night were reserved for when Babers sent Rex Culpepper to replace Tommy DeVito at quarterback for the final drive and when Culpepper completed a touchdown pass to tight end Ravian Pierce. Culpepper, who is battling cancer, had been told early in the week he was not going to play, gave Babers a hug and settled in quickly, completing all four of his passes for 55 yards and that score to Pierce.
While Culpepper was the surprise star, he was not the quarterback most were interested in seeing Friday night. With returning starter Eric Dungey being held out, SU fans got their first glance at DeVito in action.
The four-star recruit who redshirted his freshman year looked pretty good, showing off two particularly strong traits. The first was his accuracy, particularly in the short and intermediate pass games.

The cost to repair a damaged water tower at Morningside Reservoir could be at least $3 million.
Mayor Ben Walsh offered that number during an interview about the city budget earlier this month. He stressed that $3 million is a ballpark figure, and the city hadn't received specific quotes on the project yet.
The roof of one of the water storage tanks at Morningside collapsed three weeks ago. The tank was taken offline. The city water department is currently emptying the reservoir. Once it's empty, officials hope to be able to determine what caused the collapse.
Morningside provides water to much of the Meadowbrook and University Hill neighborhoods. While it's out of service, water to those customers will come from Stewart Standpipe Tank in Thornden Park.
Walsh said there's no money put aside in this year's budget to repair the damaged water tower. His administration is looking for outside funding.
