Welcome to Hiroshima Day!

Hiroshima Day marks the anniversary of the day the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II. Some have used the day as a solemn remembrance of the bombing, and many memorial observances take place around the world. Others have used the day to raise awareness about the threat that nuclear weapons still pose, as well as about the dangers of nuclear energy, and have labeled the day as "No Nukes Day."

Recruiting Wrap Up: Syracuse Football Picks Up Four 2019 Recruits As Camp Starts – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Even with summer camp getting underway this week, Dino Babers secured four commitments for the Class of 2019.

Wide receiver Nazir Burnett, defensive end Ishmael Goulbourne, cornerback Garrett Williams and safety Dorian Hewett all made verbal commitments to the Orange. All four prospects are three-star recruits, according to 247Sports.

There has been a clear emphasis on defense in this cycle after Babers’ offensive minded 2018 class. So far, SU has picked up seven defensive players to just five offensive guys.

The lone offensive player picked up this past week was Burnett. The Pennsylvania wide receiver is the second player at his position in this cycle. He held other notable offers from Michigan State, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Pitt and Boston College. He is rated by 247Sports as a top 200 wide receiver in the class.

On defense, Babers continued his conquest in Florida by picking up Goulbourne. He is the third commit from the Sunshine State, tied with Burnett’s home of Pennsylvania for the most in the class. In fact, SU has yet to pick up anyone from New York. Goulbourne played his high school ball at Palm Beach Gardens, where he was a teammate of Orange freshman safety Cam Jonas. Goulbourne was heavily recruited by New York state. Along with SU, he held offers from Buffalo and Albany. His other major offer was Cincinnati.

The Scoop - Monday August 6, 2018 - FootballScoop (the scoop)

Missouri Southern State: Former Univ. of Houston recruiting analyst Vincent Marshall will join the staff at Missouri Southern State University as running backs coach a source tells FootballScoop. Marshall played under Art Briles at Houston & left the program as their all-time leading WR after walking on. GA’ed under Dino Babers at Bowling Green State University and also was an Offensive Quality Control Coach under him at Syracuse.

Syracuse Football: Orange get commit from 2019 3-star defensive back (itlh.com; Carey)

The Syracuse football squad continues to do work and this time for 2019. Our recruiting expert has all the juicy details on this talented defensive back.

Last week the Syracuse football squad picked up a slew of different 2019 commits. The first commit was Garrett Williams, a defensive back from North Carolina.

Williams informed the coaching staff the night before, and then announced his commitment later via, twitter.

Williams is a 5-foot-11 for cornerback for his high school, Hickory Ridge. The Harrisburg, North Carolina native also had offers from the likes of East Carolina, Maryland, and West Virginia.

As a three-star prospect, 247sports.com lists him as the 1843rd best player in the country and 177th best cornerback. Williams will join Adrian Cole as the only two corners in the class for Syracuse at the moment. Dorian Hewett and Cornelius Nunn are both expected to suit up at safety for the Orange.

ACC Football Rx (accfootballrx.com; HM)

"Bowls begin the certifying process July 1, and new agreements with leagues are expected to be announced by the end of the summer", according to ESPN [LINK].

This probably refers to the second half of the 12-year CFP cycle (most non-CFP bowl contracts were only for 6 years last go round - only CFP bowls were for 12 years). In fact, the entire FBS just went through this process 5 years ago [see ACC Bowl News - 5/21/2013].

What we know: the ACC will keep the Orange Bowl through at least 2025, and it's already been announced that the ACC will send a team to Chicago to play a Big Ten team in the dead of Winter at Wrigley Stadium (don't ask me why - at least the bowl in Detroit was indoors!) - then it was called off!

But the REAL question should be: which bowls do we WANT for the ACC in the next round? Here are my thoughts (I'd like to get yours in a comment or email)...

To narrow the field I'm going to make two simplifying assumptions: (1) the ACC isn't interested in any bowls played before Christmas, and (2) it isn't interested in any bowls played West of the Rockie Mountains. Also, the New York Six bowls are off the table for the next six years, so forget them too.

With all that in mind, here's the list of Post-Christmas Bowls East of the Rockies (those already associated with the ACC in bold):
Heart of Dallas Bowl - Cotton Bowl, Dallas, TX
Quick Lane Bowl - Ford Field, Detroit, MI
Independence Bowl - Independence Stadium, Shreveport, LA
Pinstripe Bowl - Yankee Stadium, NY
Texas Bowl - NRG Stadium, Houston, TX
Military Bowl - Memorial Stadium, Annapolis, MD
Camping World Bowl - Camping World Stadium, Orlando, FL
Alamo Bowl - Alamodome, San Antonio, TX
Belk Bowl - Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
Sun Bowl - Sun Bowl, El Paso, TX
Music City Bowl - Nissan Stadium, Nashville, TN
Gator Bowl - EverBank Field, Jacksonville, FL
Liberty Bowl - Memorial Stadium, Memphis, TN
Outback Bowl - Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL
Citrus Bowl - Camping World Stadium, Orlando, FL

Do not adjust your monitor; someone really did this

Clemson's Dabo Swinney to NC State's Dave Doeren: Buildings don't win championships (independentmail.com; Louis-Jacques)

North Carolina State football coach Dave Doeren said at ACC Kickoff in July that Clemson's facilities were the best in the conference — which isn't necessarily a false statement. Clemson opened the $55 million Allen N. Reeves Football Complex in 2017 to national acclaim.

But given that Doeren said this after he was asked about the challenge of facing Clemson, and followed it by claiming his program was trying to do "more with less," one could make the argument Doeren, at some level, attributes Clemson's success to its football facilities.

More: Swinney fires back at Doeren: 'I think the investigation needs to be managing his side'

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney nipped that argument in the bud Friday.

“We won a national championship before we ever were in this facility. Just making that note," Swinney said. "We didn’t move into this building until after we won it all. We brought the trophy with us and stuck it right in the lobby.

UVa football notebook: Mendenhall encouraged by offensive line numbers (roanoke.com; Blum)

Virginia football coach Bronco Mendenhall said he smiled when he walked into the offense line room and saw around 20 players looking back at him. The Cavaliers have been operating with lower numbers on both the offensive and defensive lines.

“I believe our roster size my first year was 98. We have 124 in camp right now,” Mendenhall said after Friday’s opening workout at fall camp. “There’s players, also, that aren’t scholarship players that are being drawn to this program by what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. That allows the practice to really be more physical.”

Not only are there more players, several are much bigger, too. Among the biggest changes in weight, which were posted Friday, are Juan Thornhill gaining 10 pounds, Zane Zandier gaining 20 pounds, Malcolm Cook gaining 10 pounds, Joey Blount gaining 10 pounds, Richard Burney gaining 15 pounds, Ben Haskins gaining 20 pounds since January and Charles Snowden gaining 20 pounds.

Virginia has a lot of questions regarding depth at many positions — Mendenhall was lamenting a lack of reliable options at wide receiver on Friday — but the numbers are growing for UVa.

Willie Taggart, Walt Bell detail what it's going to take to win the FSU QB job (tallahassee.com; Weiler)

Florida State opens fall camp Monday morning with a quarterback problem.

Three viable options, but room for only one of them in the starting lineup.

The Seminoles enter preseason practice with two quarterbacks who each have a year of starting experience in redshirt junior Deondre Francois and sophomore James Blackman. Then there's Bailey Hockman, who the coaches say is not to be counted out every time the position comes up.

That was the message again Sunday when addressing the media.

"They are all going to have an opportunity. They all understand that. That starts now. We're in training camp now and those guys understand they have got to go out and perform each and every day," FSU head coach Willie Taggart said of the QB competition.

"They know what it's going to take. They know they got to separate themselves and again, like I told you guys before, I'm looking forward to seeing who separate themselves."

Wonder if Syracuse would ever have a bowl?
Sadly gotta get the train running again. I'd imagine a pre-Christmas Bowl. If Destiny got involved it would surely be pre-Christmas. Another possible sponsor "Dinosaur BBQ".

I'd make it MAC vs ACC with an AAC backup. I don't think it could ever be more than a 3rd tiered bowl.

As much as we make fun of the Detroit Bowl...they are located geographically in a better position to get teams.
If that bowl died...Cuse would have a much better shot to get approved.
