Welcome to National Chocolate Milkshake Day!

National Chocolate Milkshake day is dedicated to the chocolate version of the frothy and thick drink, that is usually made with milk, ice cream, and flavored syrup. Milkshakes were first mentioned in print in Britain in 1885, and may have contained whiskey at the time. By the turn of the 20th century, they were seen as being more wholesome, and the alcohol was replaced with syrups such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Another version of the milk shake, the malted milkshake, was invented in 1887. This shake added malted milk, which consists of a mixture of evaporated milk, wheat flour, and malted barley. Other names for a milkshake include frappé, frosted, thick shake, and cabinet, which is the term used in Rhode Island. Milkshakes have traditionally been sold in many places: malt or soda shops, ice cream shops, diners, fast food restaurants, and other similar type of establishments. Many times milkshakes are made with a blender using a stainless steel cup. As not all of the milkshake always fits in a glass, the stainless steel cup with the extra mixture is brought to the table with a spoon.

Offensive lineman Airon Servais on how Syracuse football coach Dino Babers recruited him.

Maybe the breakthrough Syracuse coach Dino Babers has been expecting has finally arrived.

The Orange have won their first two games for the first time under Babers, and his up-tempo offense has shined in victories at Western Michigan and at home on Saturday over Football Championship Subdivision foe Wagner.

In his first two head coaching stops, at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, his teams clicked in his second season at each school. His third year at Syracuse so far is the charm for Babers.

“I think we just did what everyone anticipated us doing,” Babers said. “If we did anything different, there would be all kinds of articles written. But we’re at the spot where we’re supposed to be.

“To be where we are and to keep it going would be a very favorable situation for us.”

Senior quarterback Eric Dungey has orchestrated the two wins with his legs and strong right arm, amassing 646 yards of total offense to rank 17th nationally. He’s 35 for 63 passing for 467 yards and seven TDs with one interception and has rushed for 244 yards and one score, averaging 9.4 yards per carry.

Against Wagner, Dungey matched a school record with five touchdown passes — to five different players — to lead a 62-10 assault .

“I get to build chemistry with different guys,” Dungey said. “That’s big for us. Spread the ball out, let those guys make plays.”

Syracuse has scored 117 points and its 58.5 points per game is tied for sixth nationally with Atlantic Coast Conference rival Boston College as the Orange prepare to host Florida State (1-1, 0-1 ACC) on Saturday in Syracuse’s first conference game.

The Seminoles, who were ranked No. 19 in the preseason poll, are coming off a victory over FCS foe Samford, but had to rally late in the fourth quarter to get it.

Andre Cisco

Sure, a lot of it is right place right time, but the dude is one of just two players in the entire country with three interceptions right now. Not too shabby for your first two college games. Obviously, the interception trend is not sustainable. However, Cisco does feel like a star in-the-making who will be a focal point of the SU secondary for a long time.

Eric Dungey

I guess we all kinda knew this, but Dungey is a bonafide stud. Like seriously, he has taken it up another notch this year. It feels like he is taking more time in the pocket and letting the play develop more versus resorting to his feet and improvising a lot like the past couple years. Overall, he just looks like a senior and has more swagger than he did in years past. I mean he’s setting SU records left and right and even getting some Heisman love.

College football: Syracuse satisfied after high-scoring rout of Wagner (ogd.com; St. Croix)

Following a prolific offensive performance in a victory over FCS foe Wagner on Saturday, the Syracuse University football team is exactly where coach Dino Babers expected it to be entering its Atlantic Coast Conference opener next week.

Senior quarterback Eric Dungey tied a program record with five touchdown passes — connecting with five different receivers — and the Orange rolled to a convincing 62-10 victory over the Seahawks in its home opener in front of 29,395 fans at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse improved to 2-0 for the first time under third-year head coach Dino Babers as the team prepares to host Florida State in its ACC opener at noon next Saturday.

The Orange built a 45-7 halftime lead to match a program record for most points scored in a half, and finished with the highest point total during Babers’ tenure.

“I think we just did what everyone anticipated us doing and if we did anything different, there would be all kinds of articles being written,” Babers said. “We’re at the spot where we’re supposed to be. We’re 2-0 and we have a conference game coming up against a team that is one of the most celebrated teams of our time, a team with a fantastic tradition, just like ourselves.”

The Orange opened the season with back-to-back 55-point performances for the first time in nearly 90 years, since it kicked off the 1929 season with a 77-0 win over Hobart followed by a 55-0 victory over St. Lawrence University.

Saturday’s performance served as the follow-up to a 55-42 road victory over Western Michigan on Aug. 31 to open the year.

Week 2 ACC Football Recap: Three things we learned from this weekend’s results (strakingthelawn.com; Schwartz)

While all our attention was focused on Virginia falling just short against Indiana this weekend, other things apparently happened elsewhere around the ACC. Here’s three things you missed if you were stuck in the rain in Bloomington on Saturday.

1. Florida State, despite winning their first game, secured their position as the biggest early-season ACC disappointment.

The Florida State Seminoles trailed FCS Samford (who received $500,000 from FSU to buy their visit to Tallahassee) for almost the entire game, quickly falling behind 13-0 in the first quarter and not gaining the lead until a touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. While FSU did force four interceptions, its secondary allowed Samford QB Devlin Hodges to pass for 475 yards and 2 TDs in front of a nervous home crowd.

After the Virginia Tech Hokies crushed Florida State on the road last week, we asked: Is Virginia Tech better than we thought, or is FSU worse? The Hokies certainly deserve credit for what they did in Tallahassee, but it does look like FSU was undeserving of their preseason ranking.

2. Jimbo Fisher’s new team looked far better than his old one,.

The Clemson Tigers led Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M Aggies team 14-3 at halftime and 28-13 at the end of the third quarter, but the Aggies scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns (the second after regaining possession with just over a minute to play in the game). The Tigers escaped College Station with a win by stopping A&M’s two-point conversion attempt to tie, capping a dramatic final minute.

FSU's Week 3 Depth Chart vs. Syracuse

Florida State released its depth chart for Saturday’s contest against Syracuse, and there are a few notes worth sharing.

- The most noteworthy development is the absence of starting right tackle Landon Dickerson, who was not on FSU’s flip card ahead of last week’s game against Samford. Dickerson suffered an ankle sprain in the opener versus Virginia Tech and was expected to miss some time with the injury. Derrick Kelly started in his place at right tackle, and it looks like FSU will continue to have Kelly work there this week. Brady Scott, who played in several spots but finished the Samford game as FSU’s first-team left tackle, is listed as the No. 2 right tackle. Abdul Bello is listed as the No. 2 left tackle behind Jauan Williams after missing last week’s game with an undisclosed injury. This is a position that's worth monitoring as FSU went with six rotations last week and has utilized at least 10 so far this season.

- FSU’s wide receivers were filled with “ORs” upon the release of the initial depth chart ahead of the Virginia Tech game. That’s been narrowed down. Keith Gavin and Tamorrion Terry are now listed as the first-team outside receivers, while D.J. Matthews has distinguished himself as the first-time slot wide receiver ahead of Nyqwan Murray.

Syracuse Football: Dino Babers suggests you don’t need a running game (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

...
Here are the cold hard facts, Syracuse hasn’t had a 1,000 yard rusher since 2012 when Jerome Smith broke the plateau. Under head coach Dino Babers, the Orange have struggled to consistently find a running game since he’s arrived:

  • 2017: Syracuse finished 70th in the country in rushing with 161 yards rushing per game.
  • 2016: Syracuse finished 115th in the country in rushing with 119 yards rushing per game.
So why is all of this relevant?

Well in Dino Babers post game comments following the win over Wagner, he suggested that you don’t need a running game to succeed in college football:

“A lot of people say, hey you got to rush the football, you really don’t have to rush the football, if you can throw for a very high percentage. Look at the Tennessee Tech’s of the world and the West Virginia’s of the world who do that all the time.”

Bold strategy Cotton, let’s see if it pays off. Oh wait a minute, we’ve already seen two years of sample size to see if it works. Two 4-8 seasons suggests that perhaps it doesn’t work out as well as Babers suggests.

UNC, NC State, Va. Tech called due to Florence (espn.com; Adelson)

With Hurricane Florence approaching the Carolinas, the West Virginia-NC State, East Carolina-Virginia Tech and UCF-North Carolina games scheduled for Saturday have been canceled, it was announced Tuesday.

Virginia Tech (No. 13), West Virginia (No. 14) and UCF (No. 18) are all ranked in the Top 25 heading into Week 3 action.

In a statement, UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham called it "the sensible decision at this time'' with Florence's projected path carrying the storm through the state.

More than 5.4 million people live in areas now under hurricane warnings or watches on the U.S. East Coast, according to the National Weather Service. Another four million people are under a tropical storm watch. Assorted bad weather advisories stretched from Florida to Maine on Tuesday evening.
