Welcome to Constitution Day and Citizenship Day!

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day "commemorate the formation and signing on September 17, 1787, of the Constitution and recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens." If September 17 takes place on a weekend or on another holiday, Constitution Day and Citizenship Day are observed on a nearby weekday. On the day, the president traditionally issues a proclamation calling on government officials to display the flag on government buildings, and calls for the day to be observed in schools and other places with appropriate ceremonies. Events and activities take place around the country, and civil and education groups provide citizens with educational resources about the Constitution.

Bowl watch: Syracuse football's chances take huge leap after win over Florida State (PS; Carlson)

The last time Syracuse won its first three games was three years ago. The Orange started 2015 the same way it has this year, yet still failed to snap a bowl drought that dates back to 2013.

After that perfect start former coach Scott Shafer spent his postgame press conference requesting positive questions from reporters after a less-than-inspiring overtime win over Central Michigan. An injury drove Eric Dungey from the game, and the Orange barely held on to win behind backups Austin Wilson and Zach Mahoney. Despite the efforts at optimism, most anticipated the end that was coming. Syracuse went on to lose eight of its last nine games. The Dino Babers era began.

It feels much different this time around.

Syracuse lost Dungey to injury against Florida State but this time received inspiring play from highly-touted backup Tommy DeVito. Rather than surviving to escape a lesser opponent the Orange pulled away from traditionally powerful, but strangely incompetent, Florida State.

The Orange has every reason to feel optimistic about its chances, appearing in the bowl projections of every national expert this week and even earning Top 25 votes in both of college football's major polls.
The Bowl Watch hasn't been this optimistic in the two years it has existed.
Last week's result: Win 30-7 vs. Florida State

What it meant: Only the boldest prognosticators expected Syracuse to start the season 3-0. The Orange are ahead of schedule, and the rest of the season's sLAE of games looks easier than it did when the season began.

It's time to start seriously thinking about football in December.

This week's game: Saturday vs. Connecticut, 4 p.m.

What it means: Anything less than the program's first 4-0 start since 1991 would be a disappointment. The Huskies have been out-scored 118-24 by FBS opponents and went into the final minutes to escape with a seven-point win over Rhode Island on Saturday. The Rhode Island football team might be substantially improved but the program hasn't had a winning season at the FCS level since 2001 and is generally one of the worst teams at that level.

As UConn coach Randy Edsall bemoaned last week: "This is a massive rebuild."

It's early, but Syracuse football is worth believing in again - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Step back into the time machine for a moment and set the dial to 2015.

That was the last time Syracuse started 3-0 in a season, and Scott Shafer was giving his opening statement following a 30-27 overtime win against Central Michigan.

“It’s been 24 years since Syracuse has been 3-0, so let’s not lose that with our questions. You guys with me?” Shafer said, while adding a fist pound for emphasis. “We’re 3-0 and it’s been 24 years since we’ve been 3-0. Let’s not twist it, turn it, let’s give these kids credit.”

Shafer’s demeanor during the press conference was wary and defensive, telegraphing that the quick start was more serendipitous than presumed.

And he was right. That Syracuse team won only one more game the rest of the year, and it led to Shafer being dismissed at the end of the season.

Let’s step back into the present.

There was a very different feeling when the Orange easily handled Florida State, 30-7, on a steamy Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. The Orange got there by dominating a more talented opponent as opposed to squeaking by a non-Power 5 team.

There was no need to rush the field unlike beating Virginia Tech in 2016 or upsetting No. 2 Clemson last year. Both wins were thrilling, but both wins were flukes.

In contrast, beating Florida State was expected. The Orange was technically a three-point underdog prior to the game, but SU was also a popular upset pick, and showed why.

Dino Babers’ opening statement to the media reflected as much, drawing a stark contrast from his predecessor.

Good storyline...Two undefeated teams and both frontrunners for the ACC Atlantic. Syracuse pulled off the upset last year with an injured KB (is he injured for this game)?

Other games:

-Ohio St @ Penn St (Gameday was at TCU/TOSU this past week)
-BYU @ Wash (BYU pulled off the upset against Wisconsin)
-VT @ Duke (Two frontrunners in the ACC Coastal, both undefeated)
-Stan @ Notre Dame (Gameday is at Stan/Ore this week, game airing on NBC)

FSU football recruits react on social media to the Seminoles’ disheartening loss at Syracuse (tomahawknation.com; Kanell; video)

Following Florida State’s disheartening 30-7 loss to the Orange on Saturday, the ’Noles 2018 season appears to be in a state of flux. In a year that starts as badly as FSU’s has, it’s natural to see everything through a negative lens. Many fans are surely wondering what impact the last three games have had on recruiting and worrying about recruits looking to take their talents elsewhere. A quick search on Twitter, however, paints a different picture and if there is any certainty to uncover in FSU’s unforeseeable future, it appears to be found within Taggart’s 2019 recruiting class that currently cracks the top-10 in the latest class rankings.

The future Seminoles are using their social media to weigh in on the current team’s woes and it seems that they understand how their impact may eventually contribute to the future success of the program.
See their reactions below.

2019 4-star safety commit Nick Cross shared a post that resonated well with his future teammates.

Syracuse Football: The Good, the bad, and the ugly from FSU win (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Our Paul A. Esden Sr. gives us the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Syracuse football squad and their huge win over the Florida State Seminoles.

This game can be summarized by the statement made by Nykeim Johnson: “We are definitely looking to run up the score and annihilate them.”

This comes from a 5-foot-8 167 pound sophomore wide receiver with 14 career catches. I am pretty sure people scoffed at this (especially the people from Tallahassee). His stats from yesterday were not overly impressive three catches for 32 yards.

However as a national audience can attest, he more than backed his statement up as he trucked a Florida State defender on his way to a 23-yard reception.

There was a lot of debate leading up to game whether or not this was a ‘skin’ game for the Orange.

My mindset was on the same wavelength as Nykeim’s. I expected them to win.

Breaking down the first two games for both teams the OITNF were just plain better. True they were unproven against an ACC team or even a school from major conferences and I acknowledge this is not Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles or the caliber of team that won the National Championship.
But this was as many Syracuse players stated 5 star recruits versus 2-3 star recruits. Dino Babers was quoted leading up to the game: “It’s an opportunity for them to have a fight with someone their own size.” Well fight they did, it was not much of a fight as Syracuse pounded them from pillar to post.

Florida State misery: How did the football program get here? (tallahassee.com; McGahee III)

Football season is supposed to be fun, but if you're a Florida State fan, the first three games of the 2018 season have been anything but.

The Seminoles (1-2) have lost both games against ACC opponents by an average of 22 points and have not looked even close to what FSU fans expected to see in Willie Taggart's first year.

FSU's offense is among the worst in the country, special teams are bad, and the defense has only been able to hold teams in check for so long before breaking down late in games.
How did we get here?

FSU won an National Championship five years ago with one of the best teams in college football history, made the College Football Playoff four years ago, and won the Orange Bowl two years ago.
How could one of the top programs in the country fall so far so quickly?

One of the main factors affecting the Seminoles is an abysmal offensive line that can't run block or pass block well enough for even quick plays to materialize.

Syracuse Football: The Tommy DeVito era has officially begun (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team has made a change at quarterback. It was by choice, just not their choice and Tommy DeVito has officially taken over.

We all knew it was inevitable that the Syracuse football team would be forced to make a change at quarterback. We were hoping for something different in year No. 4, but that’s all it was in regards to Eric Dungey.

Every year of his Orange career, it has ended in the same way, him not being on the field. This time he was taken out of the game due to ‘blurred vision’ says head coach Dino Babers.

Although Babers wouldn’t reveal when the ‘blurred vision’ began, but he did say that Dungey was involved in a few plays with the blurred vision and Babers had to take him out of the game.
The reason why when the ‘blurred vision’ began is important is because Eric Dungey took a cheap shot in the second quarter to the head area, which would explain blurred vision and another possible concussion.

Clemson Football: Kelly Bryant injury comes at pivotal time entering ACC play (independentmail.com; Louis-Jacques)

Clemson has been in nearly this exact situation before, its starting quarterback injured to an unknown extent following a big home win.

Fifth-year senior Kelly Bryant left No. 2 Clemson's game Saturday against Georgia Southern with what was later described as a chest bruise, leaving his status for next week's game at Georgia Tech uncertain.

More: Clemson wanted to get its ground game going; Travis Etienne showed why vs Georgia Southern

The situation feels reminiscent of Clemson's against Wake Forest last season, when Bryant's ankle injury forced him out of the game prematurely. In both circumstances, head coach Dabo Swinney initially dismissed the seriousness of Bryant's injury and in both circumstances, Clemson had a conference road game looming.

The difference this year, however, lies in 6-foot-6 freshman Trevor Lawrence, who is more experienced at this point in his career than either of Clemson's backup quarterbacks were at the time of Bryant's injury in 2017.

More: Dabo Swinney says Clemson QB Kelly Bryant 'should be fine' after suffering chest bruise

Don't expect much transparency from Swinney and his staff this coming week regarding Bryant's status. They played things close to the chest last season and Swinney told reporters last week he'd continue to do so when it came to his players' injuries. However, fans should take solace in the fact that Lawrence appears ready to take the reins should Bryant's injury linger into next weekend.

You'll hear old school ACC fans lament that the conference is down because of teams like Florida State and Georgia Tech - but the evidence says maybe the power has simply shifted to the Northeast? Collectively BC, Pitt and Syracuse are a combined 8-1 so far this season. True, none of them have what you would call a "signature" non-conference win yet, but BC has a chance to add another loss to Purdue's ledger next week, and Pitt and Syracuse both get a shot at Notre Dame later on. The only loss in the bunch is Pitt, to Penn State - who themselves might be pretty doggone good, too!

ACC Football Rx: Consolation - 9/15/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

Big Ten

First, here are the G5 losses...

Temple 35 @ Maryland 14 L
Troy 24 @ Nebraska 19 L
BYU 24 @ #6 Wisconsin 21 L
USF 25 @ Illinois 19 L
Akron 39 @ Northwestern 34 L

So many losses, and most of them at home against G5 opponents! All told, the Big Ten was 5-5 against non power five opponents in Week 3.

Here are the P5 OOC losses...

Rutgers 14 L @ Kansas 55
Missouri 40 @ Purdue 37 L
Only Ohio State's win over TCU stemmed the tide of losses.

Week 3 was an absolute DISASTER for the Big Ten.

ACC power rankings: What happened to Florida State? (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

1. Clemson
Record: 3-0 overall
Last game: vs. Georgia Southern (W, 38-7)
Next game: Saturday, at Georgia Tech
It could be awhile before the Tigers are tested again.
2. Virginia Tech
Record: 2-0 overall, 1-0 ACC
Last game: vs. William & Mary (W, 62-17)
Next game: Saturday, at Old Dominion
Some Virginia Tech fans were upset the Hokies didn’t play this week. Those fans need to adjust their perspective.
3. Boston College
Record: 3-0 overall, 1-0 ACC
Last game: at Wake Forest (W, 41-34)
Next game: Saturday, at Purdue
The Eagles should be 5-0 and ranked in the top 25 when they come to Raleigh on Oct. 6.
4. Miami
Record: 2-1 overall
Last game: at Toledo (W, 49-24)
Next game: Saturday, vs. FIU
When quarterback Malik Rosier (five total touchdowns) is good, Miami is good. It’s not that complicated.
5. Duke
Record: 3-0 overall
Last game: at Baylor (W, 40-27)
Next game: Saturday, vs. N.C. Central
Don’t beat yourself. Even with all of Duke’s injuries, this philosophy leads to wins. The Blue Devils were turnover-free in their second straight road win over a Power 5 team.
6. N.C. State
Record: 2-0 overall
Last game: vs. Georgia State (W, 41-7)
Next game: Saturday, at Marshall
Dave Doeren’s 3-1 against Group of 5 teams on the road.
7. Syracuse
Record: 3-0 overall, 1-0 ACC
Last game: vs. Florida State (W, 30-7)
Next game: Saturday, vs. Connecticut
The Orange need to clean up their mistakes, and teach Eric Dungey how to avoid contact, but they get another inept opponent at home this week.

Second thoughts: Louisville's ACC opponents are also struggling (courier-journal.com; Lourim)

Leftover observations and opinions from Louisville's 20-17 win against Western Kentucky, spinning it forward to next week's game at Virginia:

Louisville's game Saturday was almost a disaster. The Cardinals escaped, but as they head into ACC play, "almost a disaster" is a problem.

Louisville started one quarterback but benched him and won the game with another. The first quarterback, Jawon Pass, is now 8-for-17 for 89 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in his last two games. Coach Bobby Petrino expressed disappointment with his execution.

The second quarterback, Malik Cunningham, still raises concern about his throwing accuracy. He has received few first-team practice reps, and he has still not played against a Power Five opponent.

The issue with removing Pass again Saturday, this time at the end of the first quarter, is that his confidence is going to be difficult to salvage at this point. If Louisville needs him again at some point down the line, it'll be counting on a quarterback whose last play was a sack, whose last throw was an interception and who has finished only one of his three career starts.

But Cunningham, a redshirt freshman, is not yet built to lead a high-octane offense. Even as Louisville came from behind Saturday, it did so by rushing 33 times and passing 18 with Cunningham in the game. There's some work to do to add a second dimension.

That is the situation in front of Louisville on this fine Sunday.

Quarter of the season grades for each ACC football team (scacchoops.com; jfann)

Let's take an early look at how each ACC football team is doing so far this season.

Duke : A+
David Cutcliffe is working his magic again. There are road wins at Northwestern and Baylor, and that is without starting QB Daniel Jones who got hurt in the Northwestern game. They are 3-0 to start the season.

Virginia Tech : A+
Virginia Tech’s win at FSU has lost some luster since we’ve found out how bad the Noles are, but let’s not take anything away from Virginia Tech. They went to Florida State and dominated with an inexperienced defense. They look like the ACC Coastal’s most complete team.

Boston College : A
While Boston College still has a tough remaining schedule, they’ve opened the year right on schedule. They passed their first test with a good win at Wake Forest. They are the ACC’s highest scoring team averaging more than 50 points a game.

Syracuse : A-
Syracuse has 3 straight 4-8 seasons. They are 3-0, with a blowout win over Florida State. Dino Babers has that offense humming, and they should be 4-0 when they play Clemson in a couple of weeks.

NC State : B+
NC State was a bit sluggish in a 24-13 win over James Madison, but they are 2-0 having only given up 20 points in 2 games.

Clemson : B+
Clemson is graded on a different scale than the rest of the of the ACC. They’ve looked dominant against weak competition, but that the defensive secondary got lit up against Texas A&M is a concern.

Around the ACC: Week 3 Recap (fromtherumbleseat.com; Lawson)

The time has come to once again take inventory of everything that happened outside the bubble of Georgia Tech football in the ACC this week, now featuring 21% fewer teams thanks to Hurricane Florence. As always, Georgia Tech is excluded on purpose. We’ve got enough steaming-hot Pitt takes coming your way as it is...

Boston College 41, Wake Forest 34

Boston College is ranked No. 23 in the country after blowout wins versus UMass and Holy Cross and this weekend’s 7-point victory over Wake Forest, a team that went to overtime with Tulane in week one and blew out Towson in week two. Boston College. Top-25. Holy Cross. UMass. WAKE FOREST. These are the quality opponents Georgia Tech has been missing for years, folks.

This is guaranteed to come crashing down, folks. Purdue by two scores in week four, write it down.

Georgia Southern 7, Clemson 38

It was a good effort by the Eagles, but Clemson is a top-three team for a very good reason. We’ll see that reason soon enough!

By the way, Georgia Southern football might actually be back! They started 2-0 and play a very easy schedule from here on out, so if you’re looking for a backup team...

Florida State 7, Syracuse 30 -> #GoACC Moment of the Week

The Willie Taggart era is in flames after just three games. The best part? People are already calling for his head, a move which would cost the Seminoles well over $20 million if they were to make it at the end of this season. For context, firing Paul Johnson at the end of this season would cost Tech somewhere between $2 and $4 million. Good luck with that, ‘Noles. That’s why you’re my #GoACC team of the week.

Syracuse, meanwhile, is rolling! They’re a better team than No. 23 Boston College, mark my words.

As Trump rips media, journalism schools like SU's Newhouse see surge in admissions (PS; Washington Post)

Roxanne Ready plunged into fall classes at the University of Maryland with the enthusiasm typical of a graduate student who wants to switch careers. She also has a bit of extra motivation.

The 32-year-old is seeking a master's degree in journalism at a time when the president of the United States is launching fierce and sustained attacks on news reporters and major media outlets. She said she finds it "pretty disturbing" when President DonaldTrump disparages journalists and calls their work "fake news."
"That sort of triggers a little bit of stubbornness in me, wanting to prove it's not true," Ready said. She said she pays zealous attention to precision, accuracy and ethics. "It makes me want to do my job that much better."

The Trump era, overflowing with news, and the emergence of new ways to tell stories appear to be giving a jolt to journalism schools that in recent years struggled to cope with industry contractions. Students such as Ready are more fired up than ever about learning the tools of newsgathering, educators say. And at some prominent schools, there's evidence of growing demand for journalism degrees as applications and enrollment rebound and investigative reporting classes fill up.

...
Lorraine Branham, dean of the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, said she sees more students signing up for investigative and political reporting classes that in recent years were underenrolled or even canceled for lack of interest.

"The president might be having a positive impact on us," she said. She drew a comparison to the wave of students from an earlier generation inspired by reporters who chronicled the scandal that drove President Richard M. Nixon from office.

"In some ways, it's almost like a Watergate moment," Branham said.
