National-Sausage-Pizza-Day-1-1062x360.png

Welcome to National Sausage Pizza Day!

Today we celebrate and eat sausage pizza! Sausage is one of the most popular pizza toppings, but this was not always the case. The history of pizza dates back hundreds of years, to when pie-shaped flatbreads with toppings were first eaten in Naples in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At the time, this coastal city was not part of Italy, but its own kingdom. The working poor, or lazzaroni, lived outside or in small homes, and needed cheap food. Pizza consisted of flatbread with toppings such as tomatoes, garlic, cheese, oil, or anchovies, and it was sold by street vendors and informal restaurants, and eaten for any meal. Pizza didn't end up becoming popular in the rest of Italy until the 1940s.

SU News

Midway through 2018, Syracuse football is what we thought they were (what we learned) (PS; Bailey)

Happy Monday bye week.

Rather than putting together another weekly edition of what we learned following Syracuse football's 44-37 overtime loss at Pittsburgh, we decided to take a step back. Let's examine the Orange as we know the team now, keeping in mind perceptions entering the preseason.

For the most part, this has been a Dennis Green situation. Surprises have been few and far between for 4-2 SU. But there are specifics that have been gleaned, such as how teams have exposed SU's inexperienced linebackers in the run game and where the air attack has broken down over the last couple weeks.
Standout individual performances are also worthy of recognition, particularly those that were less expected.
Let's dive in:

The d-line is for real

The Orange's front four projected to be better in 2018 with all key contributors returning except defensive tackle Kayton Samuels, who transferred to Indiana. It turns out, they're vastly improved.

While Chris Slayton takes on double-teams in the middle, Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman have feasted on 1-on-1 matchups on the outside. Each took advantage of a tight end assignment over the last two weeks, easily winning the race to the backfield for a sack.

SU's 20 sacks through six games are tied for third in the country and have already exceeded season totals under head coach Dino Babers in 2016 (6) and 2017 (also 16).

Coleman and Robinson have six apiece, tied for 10th nationally.

A less-heralded aspect of the d-line's success? Nine players seeing regular snaps. Slayton said earlier in the year that the starters feel more fresh late in contests this year.

ACC Football Rx: ACC Under Construction - 10/4/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

From Fox: Keeping up with the Clemsons: ACC schools under construction
In the seemingly never-ending facility arms race in big-time college football, some schools hope player-friendly project will give them an edge and help them keep up with their ACC peers — and other programs around the country.
Here are some highlights:
Florida State kicked off a $100 million multisport fundraising campaign , with $60 million of that for a new football operations building.
Louisville spent $63 million to improve Cardinal Stadium and also renovated its training facility to add meeting rooms, pools and an auditorium and more than doubled the size of its weight room.
Syracuse is remodeling its meeting, locker and weight rooms, and is spending $118 million to upgrade the nearly 40-year-old Carrier Dome with a new roof and scoreboard, and an air conditioning system, starting in 2020.
Clemson has set the standard in the ACC; The Tigers opened a $55 million team headquarters two years ago that has amusement park amenities, including a miniature golf course, a slide, basketball court and a nap room.
There are no longer any ACC teams without an IPF.
Miami and Boston College opened their new indoor practice facilities earlier this year. UNC expects to begin using theirs by the end of October as part of a wide-spanning $115 million project that also includes outdoor practice fields and new facilities for several non-revenue sports.

ACC Football Rx: What if... 3-Way Challenge (accfootrballlbogrx.com; HM)

What if there was a 3-way football challenge between the ACC, Big Ten and SEC where each conference's #1 team played the other two #1's, each #2 played the #2's, and so forth down to #14 vs. #14... how would that turn out? Of course nobody knows for sure, but this is my take on it:*

HM.png

SUMMARY: I'd expect the SEC to win 7 games, the ACC 4 games, and the Big Ten just 3. However, this year the ACC would not fare well at the top of the conferences, IMO (note: I'll hear arguments that Clemson might be able to take down Alabama, but I'm skeptical).

Football parity dominating the ACC — except at Clemson (washingtonpost.com; Kekis; AP)

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney breathed a big sigh of relief when his Tigers remained unbeaten — barely — in a come-from-behind victory over Syracuse.

The winning touchdown in a 27-23 triumph just over a week ago was scored with less than a minute to play — in Death Valley, no less, before more than 80,000 rabid fans. And it came against a team that has won just one Atlantic Coast Conference road game in three seasons under Dino Babers.

This season is shaping up to be one of even greater parity in the ACC.

Only three teams are ranked — No. 4 Clemson (6-0), No. 16 Miami (5-1), and No. 20 North Carolina State (5-0) — after Virginia Tech (3-2, 2-0) got bounced from the rankings for a second time following a home loss to No. 5 Notre Dame.

SYRACUSE ORANGE
(4-2) Last Week: 4,

Syracuse lost their second straight game, but they didn’t slide far down our rankings. Yes, Pittsburgh beat them in overtime but it doesn’t mean we should undervalue the talent of this team. Syracuse will look to turn things around after their bye as they get the Tar Heels at home.

DUKE BLUE DEVILS
(4-1) Last Week: 4,

The Blue Devils had their bye and face Georgia Tech this weekend. It will be a true test for their defense as they’re giving up just 122 yards per game on the ground. If Georgia Tech gets off to a fast start the Blue Devils could lose their second game in a row.

Report: Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant planning visit to another ACC school (saturdaydownsouth.com; Spencer)

Former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant is officially on the lookout for a new school to join.

The talented athlete should be a hot commodity, so his first choice of schools to visit is understandably raising eyebrows.

According to a report from ESPN.com, Bryant is set to unofficially visit North Carolina — a program that is currently 1-3 and hosts a tough Virginia Tech squad this weekend:

Former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant plans to take an unofficial visit to North Carolina this weekend, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

The Tar Heels don’t seem to be in any position to contend next year, which would be Bryant’s final year of eligibility. Also, they could have a first-year head coach, as many expect Larry Fedora to be fired after the season.

We ate the best fried tofu we've ever had in this area at Dang's Cafe

Dang's Cafe: The pho and fried tofu will bring us back (Dining Out Review) (PS; Woodman)

Dang's Cafe opened in an old frame and brick house on Butternut Street about eight months ago. The exterior looked a little unpromising on our recent Wednesday visit, but the door opens onto a newly decorated bar beyond which lies a commodious, bright dining room. The meal we enjoyed there was one of the most healthful, delightful dinners we've had in a restaurant.

We started with a cup of hot jasmine tea ($1), strong and floral, and a Tiger beer (5.95), an Asian selection from a full-page list of beers from $3 to $6.95. Wines by the glass ($6-$9) and bottle ($22-$38) have their own shorter list.

Our server, who provided pleasant, efficient service throughout our meal, invited us to order our starters first. We chose three: a pair of spring rolls ($4), four fried pork dumplings ($5), and four garlic chili fish sauce wings ($5). All were exceptionally well prepared.

Our spring rolls were large, simple and fresh, with three large shrimp, rice noodles and mint wrapped in rice paper. Richly flavored roasted peanut sauce on the side was brightened by a little pool of chili sauce, to which we added more sriracha from the bottle on the table. The contrasting textures and flavors were terrific.

Fredrick has been a bonafide stud CB this year.
I think if he continues this play he will definitely get drafted in the draft and it will just come down to the combine how high.
