Hagfish-Day-EPostcard-2011-Rattail-Copyright-WhaleTimes-MED-600x420.jpg

Welcome to Hagfish Day!

Hagfish are an eel-like fish that have no bones, jaws, or scales, and most people would agree they are quite ugly. Not only is their appearance unsightly, but they ooze out slime at a quick rate—being able to fill up a two gallon bucket within minutes, and they also often eat dead animals—doing so by crawling through a carcasses mouth, anus, or gills, and eating it from the inside out. Hagfish Day was created in 2009 by WhaleTimes to encourage children to examine all creatures in the food web, not just sightly looking ones. The day exists to show us that all animals in an ecosystem contribute to its well being, such as hagfish and many other often looked over creatures. We need to be made aware of hagfish and other lesser known creatures, because they are just as vulnerable as cute and elegant ones. In short, today is a day to "celebrate the beauty of ugly".

Syracuse University AD John Wildhack says talks with Nike have been 'productive' (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse University's apparel contract with Nike is set to run out at the end of the athletic year and athletic director John Wildhack said the school continues to have "productive" talks with the company.

Wildhack said the school is not currently engaged in conversations with any other sports apparel company.
Widhack has said previously that the school would likely have an announcement regarding its apparel deal in the Fall.

"We've had productive conversations with (Nike)," Wildhack said during an interview on Tuesday. "I've stated from the outset that our desire would be to renew with Nike. We've had good conversations. There's still work to do but the conversations have been productive. We're basically really engaged with Nike at this point."
Earlier this month, in his blog on Cuse.com, the athletic director touted an agreement with Nike that will provide two Syracuse athletes paid internships with the company this summer.

UNC-Syracuse: Matchups to Watch (247sports.com; Hall)

After a crushing defeat at Kenan Stadium last weekend, North Carolina will look to bounce back as a heavy road underdog against Syracuse on Saturday (12:20 p.m./Raycom).

The Orange (4-2, 1-2 ACC) are coming off their bye week after suffering a 44-37 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Oct. 6. Syracuse has dropped two straight games after a 4-0 start. On Sept. 29, No. 3 Clemson rallied with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to secure a 27-23 home victory.

Head coach Dino Baber’s team is undefeated when playing inside the Carrier Dome this season. Their offense is averaging more than 500 total yards per game at a clip of 6.33 per play when playing at home.

The Tar Heels (1-4, 1-2 ACC) will be facing a balanced up-tempo offense as the Orange have thrown for 1,426 yards and rushed for another 1,350. They pose multiple threats through the air as senior quarterback Eric Dungey shares the ball with receivers and running backs alike. He is quick on his feet as well, so it will be another dual-threat quarterback for the Carolina defense to attempt to contain.

Taking on the Tar Heels: A Look at North Carolina – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

Syracuse looks to avoid dropping its third straight when it plays North Carolina on Saturday. In welcoming in the weekend bout, here’s a look at the Orange’s opposition. The Tar Heels come in without much luck to this point, but can still pose a trap game threat to the Orange.

Current Record: The Tar Heels are 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Their only win came over Pitt on Sept. 22.

Against Ranked Teams: North Carolina is 0-1 against ranked teams this season thanks to a 47-10 loss to 16th-ranked Miami (FL) on Sept. 27. The Tar Heels were scheduled to play No. 18 Central Florida on Sept. 15, but the game was cancelled because of Hurricane Florence. As for now at least, North Carolina has just one more chance to beat a ranked opponent this year. The Tar Heels play current No. 16 NC State in their last game of the season on Nov. 24.

What They Do Well: Run the football. The Tar Heels can be rather effective on the ground, but often play from behind, which forces them to abort the run game for the pass. Consequently, North Carolina is third in the ACC in rush yards per attempt, but also throws the second-most pass attempts per game. The Tar Heels have been their most competitive when they run the ball well, having done so in their lone win over Pitt and in last week’s close finish against Virginia Tech.

What They Don’t Do Well: The Tar Heels have enjoyed periods of success establishing the run, but have struggled to defend it as well. They’re not awful against the pass, but shoddy run defense has them conceding the second-most points per game in the ACC. North Carolina is third-worst in the conference in both rush yards and rushing touchdowns allowed per game.

Syracuse Football: Jarveon Howard could be the future for the Orange (itlh.com; Peelman)

The Syracuse football team landed quite a guy in talented freshman tailback Jarveon Howard. We look into why he may be the future of this program.

Syracuse Football is finally starting to figure it out. As a fan, sometimes I felt like the Orange never would, but this year they’ve made huge strides.

Don’t believe me? Every contributor here at Inside the Loud House now has the Orange making a bowl game for once.

So what’s been the biggest difference this year that we haven’t seen over the last decade or so? The answer’s actually rather simple: a decent running game.

If there is anything I’ve learned about watching ACC play, or SEC play in general over the years, it’s that they win by running the football. They run, then run a second time, and then run some more. They run at you until you’re blue in the face.

Predictable? Maybe. Effective? Oh yeah.

Heck, elite teams like Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Penn State use the same tactic too. They run more often than they pass. Even though they have talented enough running quarterbacks, you still see them hand the ball off more often in the option than running it by themselves.

Why? The more you run the ball the more you wear down a defense.

Syracuse Football: Ravian Pierce is back and better than ever (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team received a gift during the bye week. Orange senior tight end Ravian Pierce is returning to the team this week.

During the last three weeks of the season, the Syracuse football offense hasn’t been the same. That’s because the team has been operating without arguably its’ brightest star on offense, Ravian Pierce.

According to head coach Dino Babers, that will no longer be an issue because senior tight end Ravian Pierce is expected to rejoin the team this week for their contest against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the loud house.

Pierce had missed the prior three games due to an ‘upper body injury’, Syracuse would not elaborate on the exact nature of the injury.

Ravian’s return is important for multiple reasons. First off, when Eric Dungey has struggled to go through his reads in the past couple weeks. He has desperately missed his security blanket in Pierce and that’s been evident.

Ravian is a huge target that is a mismatch nightmare whether it’s against smaller corners or slower linebackers. Also as a last resort for Dungey to drop off the ball too if things go awry.

The other big help will be in the red zone. It seems like Syracuse when they get within the 20 have no idea what to do to get the ball into the endzone. This team has settled for far too many field goals, Pierce’s presence in the lineup should drastically change that in the red zone.

Plus in general no one has stepped up on this Syracuse team to be the focal point. In the previous two years it was Steve Ishmael and Amba Etta-Tawo, no such player has claimed the iron throne for Syracuse.

UNC Football: Winners, Losers, Honorable Mentions vs. Virginia Tech (tarheelblog.com; Hood)

Can a loss be painful when all hope has been lost?

Carolina was the better team on Saturday Night, there’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. If a Hokie fan tries to argue any differently, then they are just straight up trolling you because they know the truth. Carolina played well enough to where they should have won, but instead they found a new way to lose this season: with a four-minute fourth quarter drive into the end zone. Being the better team doesn’t mean you win the game, and Virginia Tech took what Carolina gave them in the end.

Let’s look at who had a good and a not so good night.

Winners

Michael Carter We’ll get to his negatives, but it cannot be denied that Carolina has a zero chance to win without Carter. The sophomore had an outstanding night, carrying it 18 times for 165 yards for 9.2 yards per carry. Even if you take away two runs where he got half his yards, the other 16 rushes still averaged about four yards per carry. With a true freshman getting his first start under center, the offense leaned on the run game. Again, this team has no chance unless Carter has the game he had.

Defensive Front Four sacks on the night between Malik Carney and Jason Strowbridge, and a total of nine tackles for loss. Add to that only 66 yards on the ground for players not named Ryan Willis. The front four of the the Tar Heels consistently were able to win at the line of scrimmage, and this is a team that is known to be able to be run on. That Virginia Tech consistently had trouble getting any sort of traction on the regular ground game is a credit to the job the line did.

We've discussed the fact that Washington State is hosting Gameday instead of Clemson this week. Of course, while there were plenty of reasons ESPN should've picked Clemson, there is one reason to pick WSU - they've never hosted Gameday before. After Wazzu gets checked off, who's left?

The now 11 P5 schools from which GameDay has not broadcast a show, ranked in order of odds on who I think will be the next first-timer to host a show.

SUMMARY: That's 4 ACC schools, 4 Big Ten schools, 2 Big XII schools, 1 Pac-12 school, and zero SEC schools which have never hosted Gameday. #SECbias is alive and well, I suppose.

CORRECTION: previously I encouraged readers of this blog to shoot an email to ESPN to complain about them passing over the NC State/Clemson game for Gameday - but I gave their old email address [doh!]. The new address is: espn.com@espn.com
