Welcome to National Mammography Day!

National Mammography Day is observed annually on the third Friday in October as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This day serves as a reminder to all women that the best defense is early detection. A mammogram can often detect a problem before there is any outward physical sign. Make sure you get your regular checkups.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Set up a mammogram and use #NationalMammographyDay to post on social media.

Here are four things UNC must do well to beat Syracuse on Saturday (islandpacket.com; Alexander)

North Carolina’s football team is now 1-4 on the season and needs to turn things around quickly.

UNC plays Syracuse Saturday on the road, which will be one of its toughest games of the season. After a 22-19 loss to Virginia Tech,UNC coach Larry Fedora said he was frustrated.

“I’m frustrated because we’re that far away,” Fedora said, demonstrating with his fingers how close they are to winning. “We’re so close and I want it for these guys. Because if you watch in practice, and you watch what they do in the meeting room, and you watch how much they care for each other, you can’t help but want it for them.”

“And we’ve just got to find a way.”

Fedora said he believes a win is coming soon. He just wants his players to know how close they are to winning, too.

“We make one play, we beat a very good football team,” junior quarterback Nathan Elliott said of Virginia Tech. “And there is more than one play in there that we could have made.”

Syracuse and UNC have split its series 2-2, with the road team winning each time. The most recent game was in 2003, when the Orange beat the Tar Heels 49-47.

ICTV: UNC Practice Report - Syracuse Week (247sports.com; Martin)

After falling a play or two short of defeating ACC Coastal rival Virginia Tech at home last weekend, the Tar Heels head to Syracuse to take on the Orange in the Carrier Dome. UNC is 1-4 and 1-2 in the ACC, while Syracuse is 4-2 overall and 1-2 in conference. The Orange is coming off its bye week and two losses to Clemson and Pittsburgh.

In the video above, Inside Carolina's Greg Barnes and Ross Martin break down the week of practice for North Carolina and examine the major storylines heading into the game with Syracuse.

Team morale seems high for the Tar Heels despite a crushing home loss and where the team sits in the standings. Players were upbeat after practice during interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday and the coaches are still preaching optimism. The message is that UNC is close. If a play or two go the other way against Virginia Tech, Carolina could have won by double-digits. There is evident improvement with this UNC team and that is motivation moving forward.

The quarterback position remains an issue for North Carolina and much of that is because of a lack of consistency. True freshman Cade Fortin got the start against the Hokies but was injured in the first half. Nathan Elliott, who started UNC's first four games, came in and is now expected to once again be the starter for Carolina against Syracuse. Behind him is true freshman Jace Ruder, walk-on Manny Miles, and emergency quarterback Anthony Ratliff-Williams.

2018 ACC Weekly Power Rankings: UNIFORM EDITION (fromtherumbleseat.com; Duncanson)

14 - Syracuse Orange

This was easy. Syracuse has worn a few different combos at home this year and, frankly, none of them are good. This white/orange/orange is probably the best of the bunch but it’s still easily the worst in the conference. I’m a fan of orange (more on that later) but doubling up on it is a lot. I’m really not a fan of the sleeves either, though it’s better here than on their other jerseys. Syracuse’s basketball uniforms are really good, so there’s potential but the current football kits just don’t work. I feel like adding a bit of white to the jerseys would make a big difference.

13 - Boston College Eagles

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports
Boston College’s look is pretty clean and simple but there are two design features that I can’t get past. First, the pants stripes. Two diagonal stripes across the front of the leg is a unique but strange choice that I really dislike. Second, the gold paneled sleeves also strike me as a bit of an odd design choice. Last weekend, the Eagles broke out some Doug Flutie-era throwbacks for Homecoming and they were beautiful. Wear them full-time, BC.

In this week's roundup of the AP's Top 25 Poll, only two NCAA college football teams are in the Atlantic Coast Conference. But the schools in this conference's loyal fans still make a handful of these programs among the most profitable in the game.

Using data from the U.S. Department of Education, Triangle Business Journal evaluated ACC schools' operating profit and ranked them in ascending order in the accompanying gallery (above) by profit per student. Each football program's operating profit was determined by the net difference between revenue and operating expenses recorded in the 2017 academic year.

The No. 1 school in the conference profitability roundup was Duke University. While the team isn't on the AP's top 25 list, you'll see No. 3 Clemson University and No. 16 N.C. State University fall more in the middle of the pack (pun intended) in terms of 2017 profits.

Last week, The Business Journals published a report on the most profitable NCAA football programs using the same data. In that ranking (featured in the gallery below), six ACC schools made the cut – with two in the top 10.

North Carolina vs. Syracuse Fearless Prediction, Game Preview (cfn; Fiutak)

...
One Reason Why North Carolina Will Win

So on the plus side, the Tar Heels totally outplayed Virginia Tech.

Yeah, they melted down and royally screwed up and couldn’t put the game away in the 22-19 loss, but the running game was great – right up until a critical late fumble – the quarterbacks combined for 287 yards, and the defense was terrific until the one time it needed to come up with a stop.

So despite the ugly 1-4 start, and even with the myriad of issues on both sides of the ball, really … there is improvement, and the team is getting better.

Michael Carter might have lost the ball when the Tar Heels had a shot to all but put the game away, but he also ran for 165 yards as he grows into a big-hitting back who can put up yards in chunks.

The Orange defensive front might be rested after getting two weeks off, but it was gouged by Clemson and Pitt in losses over the last two games. UNC has to keep at it on the ground, expect Syracuse line to sear down again, and try to hit the 200-yard mark – the Orange have given up that many three times in six games.

Louisville has fallen from first to worst. FSU has no business being 12th, either. Pitt must sure miss Matt Canada right about now!

Now for the "D"...

Scoring Defense (ACC)
Rank Team PPG
1 Clemson 14.5
2 NC State 16.8
3 Duke 17.7
4 Miami 18.1
5 Virginia 19.2
6 Va Tech 24.5
7 Syracuse 25.2
7 FSU 25.2
9 BC 26.0
10 Ga Tech 28.3
11 Pitt 30.9
12 Louisville 33.4
13 UNC 33.8
14 Wake 36.8

source: cfbstats.com - 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Team Leaders

Clemson is 1st or 2nd on both lists - no wonder they are the front-runners! Wake is a far cry from the old days of stout defense. If you're old like me you can even remember great Pitt defenses. Louisville and UNC have been porous for many seasons - but now without the offense to make up for it, they are both dreadful, to put it nicely.

Roundtable: The ACC Sports Journal's 2018 Midseason ACC Football Awards - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Coach of the Year

David Glenn: Dave Doeren, NC State

With its 5-0 start, the Wolfpack joined Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Notre Dame as the only Power Five unbeatens in mid-October. That’s pretty heady company, of course, and it’s an especially impressive accomplishment because State sent a school-record seven players into the NFL Draftearlier this year.

There has been no hangover from that celebration, in part, because Doeren followed his successful 2016 hiring of Boise State offensive coordinator Eli Drinkwitz (who ended up bringing three-year starting QB Ryan Finley with him) with the impactful 2018 addition of accomplished defensive guru Ted Roof, who has partnered with co-coordinator Dave Huxtable to stabilize a defense that lost its entire front six to the NFL and/or graduation.

Brian Geisinger: Dabo Swinney, Clemson

The approach here is simple: vote for the league’s best coach who happens to coach the best team. After wading through some murky quarterback controversy waters, Clemson has emerged as strong as ever — or seemingly close to it. The Tigers rank No. 3 in the latest AP Poll and No. 2 in ESPN’s FPI. At 6-0, Clemson has outscored its opponents by 166 points (nearly 28 points per game); in the three ACC wins, the Tigers are +92 in the point differential column, too.

Clemson has the best players in the league, no doubt, but Swinney continues to steer this ship in the right direction.

Josh Graham: Bronco Mendenhall, Virginia

The Cavaliers were picked to finish last in the Coastal Division, but thus far, they are 4-2 overall and with last weekend’s upset win over the Hurricanes, 2-1 in the ACC. Replacing a quarterback like Kurt Benkert is never easy, but junior Bryce Perkins has thrown 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions and has completed over 62 percent on his passes.

The Ask Taylor & E.J. Show - Learning From the VT Loss & How to Upset Syracuse (blogtalkradio.com; podcast; Vippolis and Wilson)

After suffering a gut-wrenching defeat at home last Saturday to Virginia Tech, the Tar Heels travel this weekend to Syracuse to take on an Orange team who have suffered two straight losses themselves. Even though the season has not gone according to plan, the Heels continue to fight every game and will look to pull off the upset in New York to try to get things back on track. Inside Carolina’s Taylor Vippolis and E.J. Wilson are here to answer your questions about UNC’s defeat to Virginia Tech, and what the team can due to escape Syracuse with a much-needed victory.

N.C. State's latest shot at Clemson comes with higher-than-ever stakes (sportingnews.com; Bender)

North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren preaches "every rep matters" in practice every single day. It's not an uncommon message by any means — but when it comes to the series with ACC Atlantic rival Clemson, it's a truth the Wolfpack haven't been able to escape.

In 2016, N.C. State missed a 33-yard field goal as time expired to set up a heartbreaking 24-17 overtime loss to Clemson. The Tigers had four turnovers in that game. In 2017, Clemson's K'Von Wallace intercepted Ryan Finley on the final play of regulation in a 38-31 victory, but both coaches pointed to Ray-Ray McCloud's 89-yard punt return touchdown as the difference in the game. Now, No. 16 N.C. State get a third chance against No. 3 Clemson with a matchup at Memorial Stadium.

"There were plenty of opportunities in both of those games where we could have won but we didn't," Doeren said on the ACC teleconference Wednesday. "We dropped a pass or had a pass interference on a critical third down or had a field goal blocked before we missed the one that was a chip shot. ‘Every rep matters’ is a big deal in a big game. … Our guys have to train that way and understand the importance of every six-second rep that they get."

In that regard, this is the 5-0 Wolfpack's opportunity as one of the five remaining unbeaten Power 5 teams. Alabama (7-0), Ohio State (7-0), Clemson (6-0) and Notre Dame (7-0) are well-established powers. N.C. State has won double-digit games just once in school history — an 11-3 campaign in 2002 led by quarterback Philip Rivers that won at Memorial Stadium to go to 9-0 before three consecutive losses to end the season.

UNC Football vs. Syracuse: Q&A with SB Nation’s Syracuse Blog (tarheelblog.com; Hood)

Thanks to division play, even though it feels like Syracuse has been in the league for a while now, your North Carolina Tar Heels will play the Orange for the first time since they joined the ACC. That means you may not be very familiar with the opponent this weekend.

On Wednesday, I tried to represent the site as best as I could, and based on the comments I did well until I tried to predict a final score. The lesson, of course, is never read the comments. The site editor over there, John Cassillo, was the one who interviewed me and was good enough to return the favor by answering some questions on Carolina’s opponent this weekend.

So when exactly is your stadium that’s named after a HVAC company getting an HVAC system?

Soon, actually! The never-ending joke will soon disappear, as the Dome (which may or may not still be sponsored by Carrier at that point) will have air conditioning by the time the $118 million renovation project concludes in 2022. There are other features too, we promise. That’s just the one everyone cares about.

After two losses in the last two games, what is the mood like right now?

Immediately afterward? The fan base was in meltdown mode, in part due to over-inflated expectations following a 4-0 start and a close loss at Clemson.

Now, I think we’ve moved past that, toward a more realistic view of the last six games (and the six that came before them). Are we frustrated that we lost two straight one-possession games? Of course. But beating Clemson two years in a row was a tall order, and they should have the talent to beat us nine of out of every 10 times. Pitt’s had our number for almost two decades now for some reason -- especially on the road. I don’t get it, and they probably don’t either.
