SU football named in Top 7 for 3-star edge rusher from NJ (PS; $; Leiker)
A three-star edge rusher from New Jersey named Syracuse football to his Top 7 on Wednesday morning.
Jayden Loftin shared via social media that the top programs he’s considering are SU, Tennessee, South Carolina, Penn State, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
He also had offers from Georgia, Duke, Temple, Wake Forest and more.
Loftin, a member of the Class of 2025, plays for Sommerville High School. He’s the No. 25 player in New Jersey and No. 53 edge rusher in the class, according to the 247Sports Composite.
At Sommerville last season, Loftin (6-foot-4, 235 pounds) had 33 tackles, 5.5 sacks and an interception, according to stats on NJ.com. He had 26 tackles and four sacks as a sophomore in 2022.
Loftin has made multiple unofficial visits to Syracuse, including during its opening weekend of spring practice. He has not publicly announced dates for an official visit but has announced OVs to West Virginia (May 31-June 2), Minnesota (June 14-16), Penn State (June 21-23) and Tennessee (June 6-8).

Which ACC schools voted to sue Florida State? We’re trying to find out (tampabay.com; $; Baker)
During Tuesday’s hearing at the Leon County Courthouse, Florida State’s counsel dug into a subject that’s either mind-numbingly boring, a crucial factor in the nine-figure lawsuits between the Seminoles and the ACC or both.

“Where are they?” FSU attorney Peter Rush asked rhetorically.
The Tampa Bay Times has been wondering the same thing for weeks. The few public details of that special Jan. 12 meeting — when the ACC’s board of directors voted to sue FSU — have been tantalizingly vague.
So where are they? After sending open-records requests to most public schools in the ACC, here’s our answer: in a read-only document stored in a secured digital box and shared with a very small circle — a group that has not yet included FSU.
Background
The ACC did not vote before filing its initial lawsuit against FSU in North Carolina on Dec. 21. That’s not in dispute (though the school and conference disagree on how much that matters).On Wednesday, Jan. 10, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips emailed the school presidents and chancellors that comprise the league’s board of directors about a special meeting. It would “continue the discussions we started on Tuesday regarding a Conference legal matter.”
The legal matter was not specified, but the board held its regular Zoom meeting a day earlier. Attorney James P. Cooney — who is representing the ACC in its litigation against FSU — was invited. So were all 18 schools, including incoming members Cal, Stanford and SMU.
But Phillips only emailed 17 schools about the special Jan. 12 meeting. FSU was excluded; the ACC has said the litigation creates a conflict of interest for the Seminoles.
Phillips asked board members to waive the customary three-day notice period for the meeting. He needed three-quarters to approve.
“I support and will attend,” Pitt chancellor Joan Gabel wrote.
“Me too,” replied Miami president Julio Frenk.
The leaders of SMU, Georgia Tech and Louisville also responded with a reply-all affirmation, according to emails obtained from North Carolina State.
It was a similar process two months later against Clemson. After the Tigers sued the ACC on March 19, the commissioner’s executive assistant sent the 16 current/future members (no FSU or Clemson) a link to a Doodle online scheduling service to set up a meeting the next morning. At least eight schools responded: Miami, SMU, Wake Forest, Boston College, North Carolina State, Pitt, Notre Dame and Virginia.
The 7:15 a.m. virtual meeting would “address Conference legal matters regarding challenges to the grant of rights.” Video was not mandatory, if the school’s “exec prefers not to be ‘on’ that early.”
The Jan. 12 meeting
In court filings, the ACC has included a pair of sworn affidavits that mention the Jan. 12 meeting — one from deputy commissioner Brad Hostetter and one from Virginia president/board chairperson James E. Ryan. Ryan said the members “present voted unanimously” to approve an amended lawsuit, including claims from the initial one in December.But who was present? The participants weren’t relevant to the vote, so they weren’t included. After a question from the judge during Tuesday’s hearing, Cooney — an attorney for the ACC — said 12 members were there. FSU wasn’t invited. Cooney said Clemson didn’t participate. That leaves one unknown absence.
Hostetter said in his affidavit that a pair of incoming, non-voting members were there, too. SMU said it would attend, which suggests either Cal or Stanford didn’t.
Meeting minutes would clear this up. Hostetter said they were scheduled to be approved by the board on March 19.
Two days later, the Times started asking for them.

66 ACC Football Student-Athletes Named to the 2024 NFF Hampshire Honor Society
IRVING, Texas - The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today the members of the 2024 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which included 66 Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes representing 13 league schools.
The NFF is comprised of college football players from all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA and sprint football who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. An elite group of 1,989 players from 339 schools qualified for membership in 2024, setting a record for the number of members in a single year during the program’s 18-year history.
Nominated by their respective schools, members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must be either:
- A senior player, who will graduate this spring/summer, and just completed his final year of playing eligibility in 2023; or
- A graduated player, who has been out of high school for at least three (3) years;
- Attained a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.2 (4.0 scale); and
- Been starters or significant contributors throughout the 2022 season.

Where will all the hotel workers live?
That was Sally Santangelo’s thought after learning that developers have no plans for low-income housing in their ambitious scheme to transform Great Northern Mall into a new community.
The plan for the dead mall in Clay is to build the equivalent of a small village from the ground up: 1,700 apartments, medical facilities, retail stores and restaurants. The plans include seven new six-story hotels.
“All of those workers are going to need a place to live,’’ said Santangelo, executive director of CNY Fair Housing.
But the new community is not expected to be a place where hotel desk clerks and housekeepers – or anyone who makes much less than the median income of $65,000 a year – can afford the rent, according to the developers.
The companies developing the mall site – Hart Lyman Cos. and Conifer Realty – say they plan to attract a range of middle- and upper-income tenants. That includes medical personnel. Chip fab engineers. Construction workers.
The lowest rents would be affordable for people making the median local income, or a bit less, said Sam Leone, president of Conifer Realty.
That would exclude nearly half the county, including many of the service workers who will be needed when Micron Technology builds a massive chip fab complex four miles down Route 31 from the mall site.
The Great Northern Mall project is the largest of at least six big housing developments proposed in the towns of Clay and Cicero as developers anticipate Micron-fueled growth. Together the projects would deliver nearly 3,000 new homes. But not one includes any provision for low-income tenants at this point.
So far, the prosperity promised by Micron has not extended to people at the lower end of the income scale.
It remains to be seen whether government officials will press for the addition of low-income units in return for financial incentives. The Great Northern developers are likely to seek property tax breaks and other subsidies to help finance the massive project.
Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon, who has championed the Great Northern development, said he will push to include some low-income housing in the mix if the developers ask for special tax breaks as expected.
McMahon did not cite specifics – “I’m not going to negotiate in the newspaper,’’ he said. But he said he expects the developers to ask for greater-than-average property tax breaks, for which the county will demand affordable housing in return.
“I think if they’re looking for anything outside the standard (tax deal) … we’re going to want to see a project that is going to be a mixed-income project,’’ McMahon said.

A newly released video of “Barbie” star Ryan Gosling has the internet in Central New York buzzing like a bee. A Baldwinsville Bee, that is.
In the video, Gosling is seen leaving Lattanzi Cucina Italiana, a restaurant in the theatre district of New York City, wearing a vintage red jacket sporting the Baldwinsville Central School District bee mascot on the sleeve. The back of the jacket reads “Baldwinsville Football” in script lettering.
Gosling was reportedly dining after taping Saturday Night Live, which he hosts on April 13 with musical guest Chris Stapleton.
A TikTok video by @catladyreadsss was posted with a message from Instagram user Mark Avery, who is styling Gosling for SNL. The message from Avery said that he bought the jacket at a vintage market.
Comments under the Instagram posts were applauding the Hollywood star for wearing this piece of Baldwinsville history.
One user wrote, “Omg I love him even more seeing [him] wear this jacket!!”
Another commented, “Love the support for the Bees.”
Gosling, most recently known for his Oscar-nominated role as Ken in the movie “Barbie,” was rumored to have been visiting Central New York in 2013, though his PR team debunked that rumor. Crowds gathered in Skaneateles hoping for a glimpse at the star.

Chevy Chase’s Syracuse vacation: He came for the eclipse, dined at Pastabilities (PS; Herbert)
If actor-comedian Chevy Chase ever stars in a movie called “National Lampoon’s Eclipse Vacation,” it might be set in the Syracuse area.
Chase spent Sunday and Monday visiting friends in Central New York with his wife, Jayni, and one of his daughters, Cydney. They had dinner at Pastabilities restaurant in Armory Square Sunday night. They watched the total solar eclipse from a spot in a cornfield in the town of Van Buren on Monday.
It happened because of what Pastabilities owner Karyn Korteling called “2 degrees of separation that made this all come together at the last minute.”
The local connection is Greg Heisler, a professional photographer who lives in Jamesville and teaches at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communication.
Chase is on old college friend of another professional photographer, Peter Aaron. Aaron and Heisler have worked together professionally in the past, Korteling said. Heisler is a friend of Korteling and her husband, Frank Fleischman.
“So what happened is (Chase) and Peter wanted to see the eclipse, and they decided to visit Greg and watch it here,” Korteling said. “So I spent the entire weekend with them. It was really hilarious, as you can imagine.”
Naturally, when it came to dinner the night before the eclipse, they chose Pasta’s.
That worked out because the restaurant, which was jammed with customers all weekend, decided to stay open an hour later than planned, Korteling said.
“We were super busy, but we could accommodate the group because we had that extra hour,” Korteling said. Chase and his family even posed for a photo with members of the Pasta’s staff.
