Welcome to Commonwealth Day!

Commonwealth Day celebrates the Commonwealth of Nations. Most of the states in the Commonwealth are former members of the British Empire. A multi-faith service traditionally takes place in Westminster Abbey on the day, being attended by many dignataries, usually including the Head of the Commonwealth—who as of 2018 has long been Queen Elizabeth II. She delivers an address that is broadcasted around the world. In some countries, the Queen's message is read aloud instead of being listened to. The Union Jack flag is flown, and many Commonwealth countries have flag-raising ceremonies, programs, and assemblies. Each year there is a new theme to go with the day. It is a public holiday in many Commonwealth countries, but not in all.

Revamped Syracuse football defense faces biggest question again at linebacker (PS; Bailey)

Coming off the program's best season in 17 years, the Orange will have more eyes on it this offseason than in recent campaigns. Year 4 of the Dino Babers era comes with increased expectations and a forgiving schedule, though SU faces a few uncertainties.

Syracuse must replace its starting linebackers for the second straight season, as well as three key offensive linemen. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Tommy DeVito heads into his first year as the starter.

Spring ball provides the first opportunity for the 2019 squad to work with Babers and his coaching staff on the field. As the team takes the week off for spring break, The Post-Standard | Syracuse.com will be continuing its positional previews.

We've already covered the entire offense -- quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers/tight ends and offensive linemen. Let's move now from a proven defensive line to a linebackers group that will see heavy competition for the second offseason in a row.

Who returns?

Andrew Armstrong, Sr.
6-2, 234 lbs

The most experienced 'backer on roster, Armstrong has appeared in 37 games, primarily on special teams as an underclassman, tallying 74 career tackles. He served as the team's third linebacker, coming on for 4-3 sets, over the first half of last year year while coming on with the third-down package throughout the campaign.

Armstrong, slotted as the first-team weak-side linebacker on the spring depth chart, made a critical defensive play last fall when he intercepted No. 22 North Carolina State's Ryan Finley in the fourth quarter of a shootout victory.

19 For '19 Offseason Topics: No. 17 Every Power Five Team's Letdown Game (CFN; Fiutak)

They’re the games that all fans blow off and all coaching staffs lose sleep over.

They’re the games that are supposed to be sure wins, but won’t come close to receiving the undivided attention of the superior teams.

Each one is the song off the new album, played before the mega-hit that got it all started, and after the emotional anthem that became the big commercial success.

They’re the letdown games, or the they’re the sandwiches. On each Power Five team’s slate, there’s at least one game that they’re going to have to find an extra gear for that might not be there.

More often than not there’s not a problem, and there shouldn’t be one for almost everyone on this list. However …

You’ve been warned.

ACC ATLANTIC

Boston College Eagles
Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Louisville, Oct. 5
Game Before: Wake Forest
Game After: NC State

There aren’t any real sandwiches for BC. However, the Wake Forest game will matter, and there’s a week off to look forward to before dealing with NC State and a trip to Clemson. Going to Louisville at the end of a run of six straight games should be rough.

1868: Cranky Charles Dickens despises Syracuse, yet befriends a 12-year-old who scolded him (PS; Croyle)

Charles Dickens, the beloved author of “A Christmas Carol,” thought Syracuse was a dump. But even so, somehow, he managed to make a lifelong fan of one young Syracuse boy.

“I am here,” he wrote to a friend in 1868 from his Syracuse hotel room, “in a most wonderful out-of-the-world place, which looks as if it had begun to be built yesterday and were going to be imperfectly knocked together with a nail or two the day after tomorrow.”

Dickens was in Syracuse for a three-day visit, culminating in a reading from two of his most beloved stories, “The Pickwick Papers” and “A Christmas Carol,” at Wieting Hall on March 9, 1868.

He was nearing the end of his 5-month long American tour and the effects of the travel were taking their toll on the 56-year-old writer.

He was sick most of the time, suffered from insomnia and a sore foot, for which he needed a cane.

He arrived in Syracuse along with an early spring, which turned the city’s roads into a mire, only adding to his crankiness.

“I am in the worst inn that ever was seen, and outside is a thaw that places the whole country under water,” Dickens wrote. “I have looked out of the window for people and I can’t find any people.”

He did not care for his room at The Syracuse House, his bed, or the food, writing:
