Jackie Robinson Day is a traditional event which occurs annually in Major League Baseball, commemorating and honoring the day Jackie Robinson made his major league debut. April 15 was Opening Day in 1947, Robinson's first season in the Major Leagues. Initiated for the first time on April 15, 2004, Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated each year on that day. The festivity is a result of Robinson's memorable career, best known for becoming the first black major league baseball player of the modern era in 1947.[1][2] His debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers (today known as the Los Angeles Dodgers) ended approximately 80 years of baseball segregation, also known as the baseball color line, or color barrier.[2] He also was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, remembered for his services with the number 42 jersey.[2]

If Tommy DeVito is going to have a good season, he’ll need a steady offensive line. Especially considering his tendency to stay in the pocket.
If the Orange are going to end their 1,000-yard rushing drought in 2019, they’ll need the hogs up front creating lanes. Syracuse hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2012 and that’s paramount to DeVito operating a balanced offense.

The Orange football team completed its third spring under head coach Dino Babers Saturday at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse used the last of its 15 allotted practices to hold an open scrimmage during "Spring Football Saturday" presented by AmeriCU.
The roughly 80-play scrimmage featured explosive plays on both sides of the ball, as six of the nine touchdowns scored covered at least 30 yards. The defense was responsible for two of them. Nickelback Trill Williams ran back an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. Safety Andre Cisco picked up a fumble and scampered 57 yards into the end zone.
Offensively, the Orange generated 566 total yards, including 402 through the air.

Coming off its first 10-win season since 2001, Syracuse held its annual spring scrimmage in front of 3,727 fans on Saturday. Though no score was kept, fans and media were treated to approximately 80 plays, 566 total yards and nine touchdowns.
Here are some of our takeaways from Saturday’s scrimmage:
QUARTERBACK HIERARCHY SET
As expected, Tommy DeVito took all of the first-team snaps, and for the most part looked in complete control of the offense. He was pinpoint accurate on most of his throws, completing 13-of-16 passes for 178 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
His one blemish (albeit a big one) was an interception to Trill Williams, who scampered 75 yards the other way during the game’s opening series for the first score of the afternoon.
Behind DeVito were backups Clayton Welch and Rex Culpepper. Both quarterbacks took snaps with the second team, and each made a strong case to be DeVito’s backup.
Welch threw the game’s longest score, hooking up with receiver Nykeim Johnson for a 71-yard strike for the first offensive touchdown of the afternoon. Still, Welsh completed just 2 of his 9 attempts for 75 yards.
Culpepper also threw a score, completing 13 of his 14 passes for 149 yards.
MORE INJURIES FOR THE OL
Syracuse has already been dealing with injuries to its relatively thin offensive line in the spring, with projected starting center Sam Heckel undergoing surgery for an undisclosed injury.
While Heckel is expected to be back in the fall, it’s caused a cascade of shifting. That was made even more complicated by the loss of starting left guard Dakota Davis, who stayed on the sidelines with a brace on his leg.

Clemson always seems to be among the national leaders when it comes to spring game attendance, and Tigers coach Dabo Swinney ensures that his fans get to see a show.
Clemson ranked No. 7 in spring game attendance last season with 55,000 fans in Memorial Stadium, and even more showed up last weekend as an estimated crowd of 60,000 was on hand for the 2019 spring game.
Those fans came to Death Valley hoping to see Trevor Lawrence, Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross and a host of highly-rated Clemson newcomers play significant snaps. And unlike some spring games around the country where backups receive most of the playing time, Lawrence, Higgins, Ross and other starters saw plenty of action as backup quarterback Chase Brice led the White team to a 30-10 victory against Lawrence and the Orange.
Lawrence threw 34 passes out of the 39 attempted by the Orange team, while Brice threw 19 out of the White team’s 33. It was a pretty typical game for Lawrence in terms of passing attempts. He averaged 26.5 passing attempts per game as a freshman in 2018.
“The quarterbacks ain’t getting hit. Ain’t nobody hitting those guys. They could’ve played every snap. I don’t worry about stuff like that. I don’t coach with fear or plan with fear. I don’t live my life that way,” Swinney said. “I don’t know how else to get a team ready to play football if you don’t ever play football. You best believe when you show up on Saturdays it’s real football, so if you don’t put your guys in those situations I think you’re doing your team a disservice.”
The quarterbacks were far from the only high-profile players getting plenty of opportunities. Starting running back and Heisman contender Travis Etienne had the second-most rushing attempts on the day with seven, and Higgins was the second-most targeted receiver with 10 passes being thrown his way.

Lamar Jackson glossed over a whole lot of issues for a few years, but he wasn’t the reason why the defense fell off the map last season.
The Cardinal D was the worst in the nation at stopping offenses on third downs, the offensive line was non-existent, and everyone who wanted to run the ball had few problems coming up with massive gashes.
Really, how bad was the defense?
It allowed 51 points or more seven times and six times in the last seven games.
It’s not fair to say the team quit. The back part of the schedule – at Clemson, at Syracuse, NC State and Kentucky – was big bag of nasty. In all, the Cardinals played nine bowl teams, Florida State, four teams that finished with ten wins or more, and Alabama and Clemson.
But there’s hope for a bounceback season for a program that won eight games or more for five straight years before 2018. There’s a whole lot of experience coming back, there’s a breath of fresh air with new head coach Scott Satterfield, and the schedule is … tough. It’s not going to be easy, but the Cardinals won’t be a pushover.
There’s still a question about the talent level and whether or not it can rise up and produce, but at least Satterfield and the new staff have options to play around with.
Starting out against Notre Dame won’t help, but Eastern Kentucky and at WKU follow. Playing at Florida State, at Miami, at NC State, at Kentucky, and Clemson will keep this from being an amazing season, but expect a four-win improvement to get to a bowl game again after missing out for the first time since 2009.

Out-of-state developers spent millions of dollars buying Syracuse buildings just to tear them down, because there was money to be made putting up apartments for wealthy college kids.
Hundreds of students have flocked to the new apartment buildings. They pay up to three time the average local rent. Amenities include wood-style flooring, 50-inch TVs and on-site fitness centers.
It’s a booming business. And it gets a lot of help.
Luxury student housing in Syracuse is heavily subsidized by city taxpayers. The developers get some of the biggest tax breaks in town.
The three most recent apartment complexes, which opened last fall – Theory Syracuse, The Marshall, and The 505 on Walnut -- will save more than $42 million combined over the next 12 years in avoided property taxes and other incentives.
In the city of Syracuse, where money is always tight, the forgiven property taxes would be enough to hire 20 cops or teachers. That’s not counting taxes the projects avoid paying to Onondaga County and New York state.
