Welcome to Corn on the Cob Day!
There are six different kinds of maize, or corn, and one of them is sweet corn, the kind that is most often celebrated on Corn on the Cob Day. Corn was first domesticated by Indigenous peoples in southern Mexico thousands of years ago, and more corn is now produced around the world than wheat or rice, although not all of it is used for human consumption. Sweet corn is picked when the kernels are still soft, and it is cooked in many different ways. Most commonly it is boiled or steamed on a stove, roasted or grilled on a grill or in an oven, or microwaved. Many times skewers are put on both ends of the cob after the husk is removed so it can can more easily be held, and butter, salt, and pepper are common seasonings used on the corn. It can be a pretty healthy snack if it is not overloaded with butter and salt, as an ear of corn usually isn’t much more than 100 calories, and is high in fiber.

ACC Football Rewind: Syracuse's Moe Neal Explodes vs. Louisville (msn.com; video)
Syracuse's Moe Neal is a key cog in the Orange offense and one of the best runners in the ACC. He finished the season with 997 all-purpose yards and 5 touchdowns. His best game of the season came on November 9th, 2018 versus Louisville. Neal rushed for 159 yards on just 8 carries and had two rushing touchdowns. As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its ACC schedule when it travels to the Sunshine State to play FSU on Oct. 26.
BRILES ARRIVES
It was a trying first year for Willie Taggart at Florida State.
For 36 straight years, the Seminoles had been remarkably consistent, going to a bowl game each year during that time period. That all came to a crashing halt in 2018, with the Seminoles finishing 5-7.
Taggart has promised large scale changes, and has reshuffled his coaching staff in hopes of getting his team back on track in his second year.
It starts on the offense, where Taggart’s group finished an unthinkable 112th in the FBS in scoring offense at 21.9 points per game. That led to the dismissal of former offensive coordinator Walt Bell and the hiring of Kendal Briles, the son of former Baylor coach Art Briles (the same coaching tree as Syracuse head coach Dino Babers).
Though the move came with controversy, there is no questioning Briles’ offensive acumen.
During his most recent stop in Houston as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2018, the Cougars finished fifth in the NCAA at 43.9 points per game, and seventh at 512.3 yards of total offense per game. As the OC of Florida Atlantic in 2017, the results were similar: FAU averaged 40.6 points per game with 498.4 yards of total offense per game.

Ever since the 2019 Clemson football schedule was released in January, every Tigers fan has been talking about the second game of the season vs. Texas A&M. The Aggies provided the toughest test for Clemson last season, even tougher than Notre Dame or Alabama.
There is no doubt the rematch between the Tigers and the Aggies on Sept. 7 in Death Valley is going to be one of the most exciting games of the season. Clemson fans are also excited about the rematch with Syracuse in the Carrier Dome on Sept. 14 because we all know what happened the last time the Tigers played in that venue.
Other than those two marquee matchups, which other contests should excite Clemson fans in 2019?
Here are three underrated games that you should mark on your calendars this season:

Georgia Tech
The Tigers beat Georgia Tech by four touchdowns last year in Atlanta and probably will be favored by a somewhat similar margin this year when they meet on Aug. 29. However, the Yellow Jackets are no longer playing option football. New coach Geoff Collins has promised that his team will have a “new look” in 2019.
Let’s be honest: No matter the opponent, this game is going to be exciting.
This year marks the first time that Clemson has started a season on a Thursday night at home in Memorial Stadium. This contest also will be the first football game broadcast on the new ACC Network. The Yellow Jackets might not provide the toughest test for Clemson in August, but the environment in Death Valley is going to be electric.
North Carolina
On Sept. 28, two national championship-winning coaches, Dabo Swinney and Mack Brown, will square off on the football field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Now that Brown is the new coach at North Carolina, the ACC joins the SEC as the only two conferences in the country with two head coaches that have won the most coveted trophy in the sport.
Another interesting aspect of this game is that Swinney and Brown are good friends. In 2009, Swinney traveled to Austin, Texas, to observe Brown’s program when he was the coach at Texas. Brown even spoke at Swinney’s annual charity gala, The All In Ball, in 2016. Additionally, Clemson has not played at North Carolina since 2010, so this game should be a fun and unique trip for Tigers fans.

The University of Louisville football team will be the subject of a multi-episode all-access television program this fall, athletics director Vince Tyra informed the school’s athletic association board of directors on Monday.
A production company that has worked with Cardinals’ coach Scott Satterfield before approached U of L about shooting the program, to run on ESPN’s ACC Network. U of L gave its blessing this week.
The program doesn’t yet have a title. The ACC Network is scheduled to launch on August 22.
“It’ll be a series, a number of things with coach Satterfield,” Tyra said. “We have some good stories to tell around our athletic department and they’re intrigued, but that’s one we offered that they want. It’ll be several episodes, just like you’ve seen in Hard Knocks. There’s been some reports and other stories out there, but this will be more broad-based. ESPN certainly has shown an interest in coach Satterfield. . . . I think he’ll do a great job with this.”
Louisville will open its season on Monday, Sept. 2 against Notre Dame in Cardinal Stadium at 8 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN.
Miami football is Fanduel’s overwhelming favorite in ACC Coastal (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)
Coming off of 7-6 2018 season the Miami football team is still Fanduel’s overwhelming favorite in the ACC Coastal Division in 2019. The iconic sports gambling site lists the Hurricanes as the number two favorite to win the ACC behind Clemson.
Fanduel gives the Miami football program odds of +850 (or 17-2) to win the ACC in 2019. The Hurricanes have the best odds among ACC Coastal Division teams to capture the conference title. Clemson is the extreme overwhelming favorite to win its fifth straight ACC Championship at -600.
The Miami football program won their first and only ACC Coastal Divison title in 2017. The Hurricanes finished 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the ACC in 2017. Their only conference loss of the regular season was at Pittsburgh in the final regular season game. The Hurricanes also lost to Clemson in the ACC Championship game.
Fanduel’s odds making the Hurricanes the second betting favorite in the ACC shows both their faith and the perception of how the public will gamble this summer on the winner of the ACC. Virginia who many prognosticators have in the top 25 and projected to win the Coastal is a distant +3000 as the Coastal’s second favorite.
A few websites have come out with their predictions for the ACC in 2019. Athlon Sports projects Virginia to win the Coastal this fall with a 6-2 ACC record. The Cavaliers come to Hard Rock Stadium in October.
Some other sites have picked Virginia Tech in the early projections for this fall. The Hokies also play at Hard Rock Stadium in October. Virginia Tech is equal to Virginia in FanDuel’s odds at +3000 to win the ACC in 2019.

The ACC’s next six-year bowl cycle swaps Detroit and Shreveport for San Diego and Boston while trading an occasional second Orlando date for an equally irregular Tampa appearance.
All of which are upgrades for a conference riding a football wave unlike any other in its 66-year history.
ACC officials have yet to publicly unveil the league’s 2020-25 postseason options, but sources have outlined the affiliations. Moreover, reporting from WatchStadium.com’s Brett McMurphy and announcements by the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference confirmed several details.
Here are the primary changes and why they benefit a league that has produced three of the last six national champions and has been represented in each of the five College Football Playoffs.
• San Diego’s Holiday Bowl and a new game at Boston’s historic Fenway Park will replace the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit and the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.
An ACC team has played in the past six Independence Bowls and four of the past five Quick Lane Bowls — the conference did not have enough postseason-eligible squads to fill the Detroit slot in 2015. Both games are part of the league’s second bowl tier, and as such never featured an ACC squad, or an opponent, ranked among the top 25.
For 2020-25, which coincides with the final six years of the College Football Playoff’s original 12-year contract, the Holiday Bowl will match teams from the ACC and Pacific-12 — the ACC is replacing the Big Ten. The Pac-12’s Holiday representative has been ranked five times in the past seven seasons.
Granted, San Diego is a distant venue, but it’s not like ACC schools are taking multitudes to Detroit or Shreveport. And San Diego trumps both as a tourist destination, especially in late December.

This post is inspired by something I read posted on CSNBBS - but I added my own twist.
Let's assume for a moment that all bowls continue to pay the same amount in 2020 that they are scheduled to pay in 2019. With that assumption (and we know it's likely to be wrong, but it's the best we can do), how does the bowl lineup realignment affect the ACC?
If you've been keeping up with the changes in the bowl lineups, you may have noticed by now that the ACC lost the conditional tie to the Citrus Bowl ($8.55 million) and replaced it with the Outback Bowl ($6.35 million). That's a small step down in pay, even if Tampa is a better location for the ACC.
If you're really observant you may have also noticed that the ACC is going from sharing the Music City Bowl ($5.65 million) with the Big Ten to playing in the Gator Bowl every year ($3.17 million).
Does this mean that the ACC will now be getting smaller bowl payouts?
Actually, just the opposite - but some math is required to prove it.
First, look at the Citrus vs. Outback situation. That $2.2 million/year may sound like a lot - until you realize that it only happened once (so far) in the first 6-year cycle, and will probably happen at most two times in the next cycle. Twice in 6 years is 1/3rd, and 1/3rd of $2.2 million is a difference of only $730,000 annualized - peanuts in big-time athletics.
What about the Music City vs. Gator Bowls? Previously those were split 50/50, so the difference in payouts is $5.65M - $3.17M = $2.48, divided by 2 = $1.24M annualized. More than the Citrus impact, but still not earth-shattering.
Here's where the ACC makes it up and more: it's essentially trading the Independence Bowl ($1.25M) for the Holiday Bowl ($6.33M) - an increase of $5.08M!
Another trade in the works is when the ACC replaces the Quick Lane Bowl with the new Boston Fenway Park Bowl.We don't know how much the new bowl will pay, but we can be fairly confident it will be more than the paltry $750,000 the Quick Lane was paying.
When all is said and done, the ACC should net out an increase of at least $4 million per year - more if you assume that the league will continue to place a team into the CFP playoffs (thereby dropping the lowest-paying bowl in most cases).

1. Clemson
The team's run down the hill into Memorial Stadium before kickoff is the obvious tradition that comes to mind, but the better one to focus on comes after the game -- the one uninitiated observers seem to always get wrong, much to Clemson's consternation. After each game, win or lose, Tigers fans pour onto the field. The coaches and players mingle, take pictures, sign autographs. But every year, at least once, Clemson fans get criticized for "storming the field" after a victory that wouldn't seem to warrant such celebration. Nope, it's just tradition. -- David M. Hale
6. Notre Dame
Even newer traditions have a way of feeling timeless on Saturdays in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame didn't install its "Play Like A Champion Today" sign in the current location at the exit of its locker room until 1986, but it has since become an iconic pregame image to see the Irish tapping the blue-and-gold placard on their way to the field. -- Murphy

After any Syracuse game, fans storm out of the Carrier Dome and down South Crouse Avenue to the best pizza spot on campus, The Varsity. The place will be mobbed with fans, including the Syracuse marching band, which will play a few tunes before the official flipping of the banner -- a ritual in which banners of each Orange opponent hung along the back wall of the restaurant are flipped upside down if Syracuse wins. -- Hale

This is the result of my research from a visit to the local Books-A-Million. Google wasn’t my friend in this pursuit. Unlike last week’s review of Way Too Early Top 25s for college basketball for 2019, I couldn’t find much at all for the 2019 college football season.
The only other finding via my Google search was that SB Nation has Virginia third in the Coastal.
I bought one other preseason mag, Lindy’s, which also has the ‘Hoos third in the Coastal.
The thinking is it’s going to be a three-team race, with UVA, Miami and Virginia Tech.
Those who bleed orange and blue look at those prospects and have to feel pretty good.
Miami has a new coach, Manny Diaz, who took over for the beleaguered Mark Richt, in a move that felt like Richt was forced out, though technically he just retired.
UM has a new coach and will most likely have a new starting quarterback, and the usual expectations that come with the load of top recruiting classes that haven’t been paying off dating back to the Al Golden era.
Virginia Tech, for its part, took a major step back in 2018, suffering the program’s first losing season since 1992 in Justin Fuente’s third season.

North Carolina plummeted to 2–9 in 2018, finished in last place in the ACC's Coastal Division for the second year in a row and has three wins in its last 24 games against FBS competition. Yet the excitement around the program is high, thanks to the return of an old friend.
Mack Brown is back to rebuild UNC's program for the second time. He succeeded in his first effort, leading the Tar Heels to marks of 10–2 and 11–1 in 1996-97 before leaving for Texas. After five years away from coaching, he's trying to put UNC's program back where he left it more than two decades ago: among the nation's elite. Brown faces a big challenge, but he made quick progress by jump-starting UNC's recruiting efforts and igniting the fan base. Now, he's looking for immediate on-field success.
"I know more than I did last time I was here, and I'm more mature than I was the last time I was here," Brown says. "We want to win, and we want to win in the opener. That's just part of who we are."
Previewing North Carolina's Offense for 2019
Brown wants to implement the Air Raid offense popularized by Hal Mumme and Mike Leach, and he hired Ole Miss offensive coordinator Phil Longo to run it. UNC's new motto, "Don't Blink," fits with the up-tempo system that the players were accustomed to under former coach Larry Fedora.
"It definitely feels fast," senior left tackle Charlie Heck says. "We were a tempo offense last year, and we're going to keep on improving that this year."
UNC has a three-player competition at quarterback after Chazz Surratt's conversion to linebacker, with highly touted recruit Sam Howell joining redshirt freshmen Cade Fortin and Jace Ruder. Fortin and Ruder flashed dual-threat ability in limited action a year ago, but both got injured. Howell, Fortin and Ruder spent the spring learning the offense, and the competition will crank up during training camp.

Ranked as the No.1 party school by Princeton Review in 2014, Syracuse University is home to roughly 15,000 undergraduate students. Each of these students, who come from all over the world, absolutely dread coming back each fall. Between the academics, the social scene and the city itself, Syracuse has absolutely nothing to offer and you should therefore avoid it at all costs.
Before I get started, let me just say that the actual campus is an immediate turn off. Let’s be real – why would anyone want to waste four years of their life on such a hideous campus?

680-444-4444 is gone, but is anyone else using the new CNY area code? (PS; Knauss)
State regulators introduced a new telephone area code for Central New York more than two years ago. If you don’t remember what that new area code is, that’s probably because almost nobody uses it.
It’s still safe to refer to Central New York as “the 315.’’
Despite predictions that the region would run out of available phone numbers without a second area code, new area code 680 is barely being used. You can get a phone number in 680 if you really want to, but apparently most people don’t.
Consider: Out of 180,121 calls to the Onondaga County 911 center between Jan. 1 and May 5, only 32 came from telephone numbers in area code 680, Commissioner William Bleyle said. That’s less than one in 5,000 calls.
Buffalo-based personal injury lawyer William Mattar, whose ads say “call 444-4444,’’ was quick to snap up that number in area code 680. The Mattar firm has the same number in many areas of the state.
But few others are rushing to use the new area code.
Verizon Wireless has some 680 numbers available for customers who want them, but nearly all customers request numbers in 315, store employees said. Representatives at T-Mobile and AT&T stores in Syracuse said they don’t yet offer numbers in area 680.
“I have not seen any of those numbers,’’ said Nicholas Francis, a mobile expert at the Destiny USA T-Mobile store.
Still, state regulators were correct to approve the second area code, according to the North American Numbering Plan Administration. NANPA assigns area codes and monitors the availability of central office codes, the three-digit prefixes of phone numbers.
