SU News

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2019/07/is-syracuse-first-school-to-open-at-home-against-defending-champs-in-football-and-basketball.html (PS; Waters)

The question seemed obvious. The answer wasn’t.

Syracuse University’s football team will start the 2019 season with road games at Liberty and Maryland before playing its first home game on Sept. 14 against defending national champion Clemson.

Meanwhile, the SU men’s basketball team opens the 2019-20 season at home against defending national champion Virginia. The Orange will host its ACC rival on Nov. 6 at the Carrier Dome.

Two home openers. Two national champions.

Which elicited the obvious question: Had that ever happened before? Had a school opened its regular season against the defending national champions in both football and basketball in the same year?

Or was Syracuse about to experience a first?

Syracuse’s twin home openers against the defending national champs had only come about because of the ACC’s change to a 20-game basketball schedule. The addition of two more conference games forced ACC schools to schedule league games early in the season, including seven season-opening match-ups.

Syracuse drew the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers for its 2019-20 season-opener.

A message to the NCAA’s offices in Indianapolis yielded the email equivalent of a shrug. Officials there didn’t know. Records aren’t kept for that sort of oddity and nothing immediately came to mind.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/07/10/syracuse-football-will-ready-trevor-lawrence-clemson-tigers/ (itlh; Esden Jr)

One expert says Syracuse football “will be ready” for Trevor Lawrence and the Clemson Tigers in 2019. Here’s why that’s the case and all the details.

The prohibitive favorite to win the 2019-20 National Championship is the Clemson Tigers. They’re led by Trevor Lawrence, who is the prohibitive favorite to win the 2019-20 Heisman trophy. Last season the Tigers were undefeated and ran through every challenge, well almost every challenge.
Only two games went down to the bitter end for the Tigers, one of those games was against the Syracuse football squad.

Ultimately Clemson came out on top 27-23 but needed some last-second heroics to pull out the slim victory.
Heading into 2019, Michael Collins of FanSided said Syracuse “will be ready” for Trevor Lawrence this time around:
“Lawrence arrived in a big way at Clemson last season and nobody was really sure just how good this kid would be against some tough college competition. He rose to the challenge and helped lead the Tigers to their second national championship in three years.
No small feat for a true freshman quarterback.
But this year, teams will be ready. Especially teams like Syracuse, Florida State, South Carolina, and non-conference toughie, Texas A&M. Those teams and every other Clemson opponent have film and a list of tendencies on Lawrence now, as well as a book on what he can and can’t do well. He’s not going to surprise anyone this season.”

That’s the unique advantage of joining the scene without prior experience. No one is aware of your strengths, weaknesses, or tendencies. You can surprise people and that’s exactly what Lawrence did on his record-breaking campaign in 2018.

Now Syracuse football has a whole season of film to evaluate. While defensive coordinator Brian Ward won’t love what he sees on film, because Trevor Lawrence is ridiculously talented, he’ll be able to exploit the holes in Trevor’s game.

Speaking of the defensive side of the football, the Orange retain their entire secondary and the majority of their defensive line (sans Chris Slayton). Syracuse does lose their entire linebacking corps, but they’re used to playing musical chairs at the position with Dino Babers at the helm.

While on the other side of the field, Syracuse will have that same advantage that Lawrence did in 2018. Tommy DeVito hasn’t started a college football game in his career and has minimal tape on him.
The Orange will have played two games (at Liberty, at Maryland) before they face off against the Tigers in Week 3 of the 2019 season.

Even though there will be two games of footage on him, it will also be minimal. SU will be large favorites over both Liberty and Maryland, so DeVito likely won’t even play the full games. Which means advantage to Syracuse.

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/07/11/duke-blue-devils-2019-syracuse-football-preview/ (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its ACC schedule when it travels to North Carolina to play Duke on Nov. 16.

DUKE’S UP AND DOWN SEASON
Duke’s 2018 season is one that can be told in three separate acts.
The first act could be considered the rise of the Blue Devils. Unranked and picked fourth in the Coastal to start the 2018 season, Duke stormed out to a 4-0 start with wins against Army, Northwestern, Baylor and NC Central.
Duke rose to as high as No. 22 in the rankings before dropping a 31-14 game to Virginia Tech at home. That started a slide of three losses in four games, and then two blowout losses to end the season.
One was an understandable 35-6 road loss against Clemson before an unthinkable 59-7 rout at home against Wake Forest. That dropped Duke to 3-5 in conference play and sixth in the unpredictable Coastal Division.
Still, the Blue Devils reached the postseason for the sixth time in seven seasons under head coach David Cutcliffe. While that might be standard fare for many Power 5 teams, especially in the ACC, consider that Duke had appeared in only two other bowl games since the 1961 to put things in proper perspective.
Which brings us to Act III. The Blue Devils enjoyed a 56-27 demolition of Temple in the Independence Bowl, as NFL-bound Daniel Jones threw for 423 and five touchdowns.
The Blue Devils ended with eight wins on the season, tied for the third highest win total of the Cutcliffe era.

Clemson Football: Syracuse matchup named ‘most dangerous’ game (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

Sporting News released its ‘most dangerous matchup’ listings for each top-25 team, including Clemson football. Here’s a look at what the publication says.
Each year when we get into the thick of July, we begin to see national publications releasing a lot of the same lists.

They go through X-factors, breakout players, darkhorses, potential upsets and most exciting matchups. One of the most intriguing posts is always the most dangerous game for each top-25 program.

Clemson football, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation according to Sporting News, was included in this latest list, of course, and the publication believes that the Tigers’ most dangerous game will come on the road in week three when they travel up to Syracuse.

Sporting News says that this game might not just be considered a trap game, but potentially the toughest game on Clemson’s schedule. The Tigers will be traveling up to Syracuse after playing a top-15 Texas A&M team at home.

The last time that Clemson football went up to the Carrier Dome, the Tigers lost Kelly Bryant to injury and ended up falling to the Orange in a weird Friday night tilt.

Though Sporting News and many national outlets have pointed this one out as a dangerous game- and it certainly should be considered- it’s probably not the top one at this point.

Why? The Tigers have Syracuse on their radar. It’s kind of like how NC State was considered this dangerous matchup for Clemson last season. Because the Wolfpack competed, it was just a consensus thought that they’d challenge the Tigers last year. That certainly wasn’t the case.

https://www.tigernet.com/update/Finebaum-criticizes-Clemson-for-not-bringing-Lawrence-to-ACC-media-days-33219 (tigernet.com; Staff)

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum came on Charlotte sports talk this week to talk Clemson and ACC football, coming off of recent comments on the ACC being a “clown show” outside of Clemson.

Among the topics on the interview was Clemson not bringing projected All-American quarterback Trevor Lawrence to next week's ACC Football Kickoff and instead taking senior offensive guard John Simpson. Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has brought only upperclassmen to the event over the years.
"I don’t know the offensive guard’s name but I can guarantee you that (he) won’t make SportsCenter that night," Finebaum told WFNZ. "Trevor Lawrence would be live on ESPN and every other network in the country. For a league struggling with comments I made and other people have made in recent months - it is a classic idiotic move from a marketing standpoint. Because you’re competing with the other leagues. The SEC one goes on for four days. The Big Ten show is two days - and you have a chance to beat your chest. You don’t want to do it then fine.

"Precedent doesn’t mean anything in college football. This is not 1965. It’s 2019 and when you think of the ACC right now - you think of Trevor Lawrence. He’s the biggest name. With Tua (Tagovailoa), those are the two biggest names in college football.”

ACC Schedules
Clemson is going to win the ACC Championship. Again.
If it doesn’t, that means something catastrophic happened or the Tigers just flat gagged, because the separation between them and everyone else is 100 miles wide.
On the plus side, it’ll be a fascinating season for the rest of the conference. Take teams two through 14 and put them in any order, then reshuffle and do it again, and you’re probably not going to be that far off on either one.
Louisville will be a whole lot stronger under Scott Satterfield, and Geoff Collins at Georgia Tech and Mack Brown at North Carolina will at least give ACC fans something to discuss.
Virginia Tech is going to be better after a rebuilding year, NC State and Syracuse aren’t going anywhere, Pitt is coming off a Coastal title, and Virginia might just be the league’s second-best team.
Boston College, Duke, Wake Forest – keep underestimating them, and keep watching them get into the bowl picture.
But the ACC needs its stars to all shine at once. It needs Miami to turn that corner and start to look like the team many thought it would be going into last year. Sort of like Mark Richt did at Georgia – he got the program to a certain point, and Kirby Smart took it to another level – that’s the hope under Manny Diaz.
Florida State has to get back to its superstar level, too.
The program that was a powerhouse force under Jimbo Fisher fizzled out fast – blame most of the woes on the offensive line – but the ACC needs the Noles to at least bring a challenge to Clemson.
At the very least, the FSU and Miami have to look like they’re on the verge of something big. They have to seem like they’re ready to go into 2020 as the “are they back?” teams – sort of like Florida and Texas are this season.
The ACC will have its share of great battles throughout the season, and – don’t laugh – just about anyone on the Clemson conference schedule will have the ability to pull off the shocker. And someday, the ACC dreams of the mid-2000s will come true and we’ll have an all Florida conference title game.
For now, having a team like Clemson to rely on for greatness is going to have to be good enough.

ACC Team That Will Surprise
FLORIDA STATE
Is it really possible for Florida State to be a surprise team? After last year, merely being a factor in the ACC – at least until it faces Clemson on October 12th – will be enough.
Willie Taggart is fine. He might take a whole lot of heat, but he’s a fine coach who had a rough rebuild to deal with in his first season. It might not be the ACC championship season like the base wants, but the Noles will start to look the part again.
Florida State Team Preview
ACC Team That Will Disappoint
DUKE
Duke won’t totally wipeout – there’s still enough talent on both sides of the ball to be interesting, and the D will be nice – but after six bowl appearances in the last seven years, this season has the potential for a big slide.
Starting out the year against a grouchy Alabama team is no way to kick things off, but there should be a decent base of home wins against a slew of okay teams. However, the Blue Devils have to go to Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Wake Forest … okay, big whoop. They also have to host Notre Dame, and Syracuse, and Pitt, and Georgia Tech, and Miami.

SN: 2019 Trap Games

From SN: It's a trap! College football's most dangerous games for top 25 teams in 2019, here are the ACC-related trap games...

22. UCF: at Pitt (Sept. 21)
The Knights have had enough success to earn this Power 5 trap game. UCF faces Pitt - a team it beat 45-14 last season - after facing Stanford. Win against the Cardinal, and the Knights must prove they can do it again. Lose, and the pressure's on to show they belong on the same level as Power 5 opponents. It won't be nearly as easy in 2019 at the always-treacherous Heinz Field.

19. Syracuse: at Maryland (Sept. 7)
The Orange have high hopes in the ACC and are SN's pick to make the Orange Bowl this season. Of course, that means not looking past a Sept. 7 trip to Maryland for the early-season showdown with Clemson. The Terps swept a home-and-home with Texas in 2016-17 and could derail Syracuse's high hopes early.

Why did Syracuse’s $100K soccer field at Schiller Park close after just one season? (PS; Baker)

After just one season, an expensive, much-celebrated soccer field at Schiller Park has closed for the summer, forcing scores of kids to find somewhere else to get their kicks.

Syracuse parks officials blame overuse and a particularly bad dry spell for the crippled field, but some soccer organizers say the city should have done more to keep the field playable.
The soccer pitch at Schiller Park opened last year as a place for neighborhood kids to host pick-up games and leagues. It’s within walking distance to the North Side, which has a huge refugee population.

City officials secured a $100,000 grant from New York State in 2017 to build it. At the time, former Mayor Stephanie Miner said it was a project that was long overdue and years in the making.
The field, which opened on Mayor Ben Walsh’s watch, survived just one year. It’s currently overrun with weeds and surrounded by fencing and “no trespassing” signs.

Oh, yeah, the same folks who are saying that Clemson is a shoe-in to win the ACC in one article are telling us how dangerous one game in particular will be in another... hmmm.

Fix Schiller Park!

I don't think talent separation is true either outside of depth.
I was talking about depth. You think another team in the conference has comparable first team talent to Clemson?

When was the last time we were projected to make the Orange Bowl (Or any major bowl) preseason? 1997?

I was talking about depth. You think another team in the conference has comparable first team talent to Clemson?
I think we have comparable first team talent yes. I don't think we have the depth however. I would take our D-line over anyone in the ACC.

The only team with comparable first team talent to Clemson is Alabama
