Syracuse coach Babers optimistic despite 2 lopsided losses (yahoo.com; AP)

After two straight losses - by 43 points one week, 36 the next - Syracuse coach Dino Babers remains upbeat.

''I think we're fine,'' Babers said Monday. ''I think that we have an opportunity to win every game that we have from here on out. I think the big thing that we need to make sure of happened last year - Clemson can beat you once, but you don't let them beat you twice.''

The Orange (1-2, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost 41-6 on Saturday night to the No. 1 Tigers before a sellout Carrier Dome crowd of over 50,000 that as the game unfolded was relegated to being a nonfactor against an opponent Syracuse has had recent success against. That setback came on the heels of a 63-40 loss at Maryland and dropped Syracuse into a tie for 111th in scoring defense despite a shutout over Liberty in the season opener.

''Our philosophy is there's always enough players to win,'' Babers said. ''That's what coaching is for - to find a way to put them in the right spot. We'll keep working. I don't think we're that far off.

''The guys that we were playing were really good. I thought for three quarters we played well. We didn't score enough points. We tried to find ways to create things. We tried to take chances to score points. We had to score some points to let them feel the pressure and have a chance.''

Syracuse football's remaining schedule shows season isn't over - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Saturday night’s game against #1 Clemson was a pretty graphic illustration as to where the Syracuse football team stands with three games under its belt. The defense is talented, but unable to consistently make stops against offensively skilled teams. The offensive line is a real problem, leading to the magnification of every mistake made by players at other positions.

But, we still got special teams.

Sterling Hofrichter aside, the Orange have one other thing going for them – their remaining schedule.
Yes, it is strange to be optimistic about playing more games when the team has dropped their last two by 78 points combined, including getting manhandled in the most-hyped game at the Carrier Dome in a couple decades. But that schedule, particularly in how it lays out, has a lot of benefits.

SU gets two home games followed by a bye week and a game on Thursday night at North Carolina State. Those two home games are against Western Michigan and FCS opponent Holy Cross.
This schedule layout gives the Orange a very good opportunity to improve in practice and carry that improvement over to winnable games. The Broncos will not be a walkover, as they are getting some pub for rolling up 450 yards and seven scores on the ground Saturday against Georgia State.

On the other hand, WMU mustered 67 rushing yards and a 2.5-yard per carry average the week before against Michigan State. The real Broncos team is certainly somewhere in the middle of those two performances.
Should the Orange win these two games, as expected, means they would be 3-2 with 11 days off to prepare for N.C. State, the sixth game on their schedule. Head coach Dino Babers mentioned in the aftermath of the Clemson game that he expects his squad to come together around the fourth to sixth game of the season. That matches the upcoming schedule.

If Babers is right, we may be seeing an entirely different Syracuse team at that point. It could certainly be a confident team with a two-game win streak under its belt with a defensive unit of better tacklers and an offensive squad with a more consistent line, leading to improved production overall.

How ‘D’ SU Tailgate Party became one of Skytop’s largest tailgates (DO; Crane)

The bologna was burning. As Syracuse fans strolled into the “D” SU Tailgate Party zone, John DeMetro Sr. turned toward the grill and sensed it, too. His son, John DeMetro II, flipped over every slice and tried to salvage what he could, but they had blackened too much.

“Uh oh, Johnny,” DeMetro Sr. called out.

“Yeah, I’m gonna do a new round,” DeMetro II said.

He swiped all 12 patties off with a New York Giants spatula, grabbed another handful and lined them up. Bologna is the instrumental part of the Skytop Sandwich — which also includes coleslaw and french fries — that they first attempted before SU’s 2015 loss to then-No. 25 Pitt. And last Saturday, they had a record number of tailgaters to feed.

For the past five years, DeMetro Sr. has gradually developed one of the largest tailgates in the Skytop parking lot on Syracuse University’s South Campus. Many times, he’ll arrive at 6 a.m. to set up, but for the Clemson game last Saturday, he arrived the night before and slept over in a trailer.

His youngest son, Kyle DeMetro, joined the operation in 2016, and the trio formed an unofficially-combined tailgate around two years ago. Together, they’ve transformed a blue Ozark Trail canopy and two chairs into a racing trailer and tailgate that attracts even Syracuse football parents seeking a relaxed environment on game days.

“You come up here and there’s not a lot of conversation around your son: how well he played, how well he didn’t,” Kevin Coleman, father of senior defensive lineman Kendall, said. “We just want to hang out with some fans and be friends and have some fun.”

What’s the Worst Case Scenario for Syracuse vs Western Michigan? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Kantor)

On Saturday former Syracuse offensive coordinator Tim Lester will bring his 2-1 Western Michigan team to the Carrier Dome for a showdown against a stumbling SU squad. And while the Broncos suffered a blowout loss to Michigan State, they did smoke Georgia State 57-10 – a team that beat Tennessee. By no means is this game a sure-win for the Orange. With that in mind, let’s run through some dreary hypotheticals that could sour fans view of this year’s team.

Tommy DeVito’s sacked at least four times

Through three games, DeVito has been scrambling for his life. There’s been snaps where DeVito takes off out of the pocket the second he grasps the pigskin. Last week against Clemson, the sophomore quarterback was sacked an eye-boggling eight times to go along with a pick. Western Michigan doesn’t have Clemson’s defensive line – which is consistently one of the best in the country – but we can all see that SU’s offensive line is a major concern. Even Liberty wrapped DeVito up in the backfield a couple of times. If Syracuse struggles against Western Michigan, there’s going to be major problems once ACC play kicks into gear.

Alton Robinson Lays Another Dud

Robinson is off to a slow start to the season, with only six tackles, half a sack, and 1.5 TFL. Last year he finished with 17 TFL to pair with double-digit sacks. For SU’s defense to play up to its potential, it needs Robinson to make plays. Kendall Coleman is great, but the Orange defensive line is elite when its two premier pass rushers are making plays consistently. So far this season, Western Michigan has allowed four sacks – with three against Michigan State. The season is still young, but eyebrows will continue to rise if Robinson’s struggles continue.

7 takeaways from Clemson's crushing of Syracuse (postandcourier.com; Needelman)

Late Saturday evening, Dabo Swinney ran his hands through his sweaty mane, plopped an orange Clemson cap atop his head and said something the 50,248 on hand in the Carrier Dome for the No. 1 Tigers’ 41-6 thumping of Syracuse might’ve taken umbrage with:
“We’re a work in progress.”
On its face, the statement isn’t inaccurate. Clemson is just three games into a regular season that runs through November — and that’s not counting a likely postseason run. Young players are still getting used to the speed of the college game; schemes and formations and lineups are subject to change as the campaign wears on.

But on Saturday night, the Tigers were hard to stop. Despite quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s two interceptions, Clemson gained 612 yards of total offense while holding Syracuse to 187 yards.
A work in progress? Perhaps. But Clemson is already operating at a special level, and the rest of the nation has no interest in seeing the Tigers at their peak.

Defense exceeds expectations

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables was pleased with his unit’s performance Saturday, and for good reason. The Tigers didn’t surrender a touchdown and were dominant in the run game, allowing just 15 yards on 42 attempts by the Orange.

Clemson Football: 3 overreactions from convincing win over Syracuse (saturdayblitz.cm; Hamner)

2. There are concerns about Travis Etienne
Should we be concerned about Travis Etienne? Absolutely not.

Etienne was held to 53 rushing yards on 16 attempts against Texas A&M the previous week and was just held to 76 yards on 14 carries to Syracuse. He was also held out of the end-zone on both games. However, if you include his receiving yards, he was over 100 total in both.

Clemson had 221 yards rushing against Syracuse and Etienne averaged 5.4 yards per rush. The simple answer is there was no need for him to have to grind out over 100 yards for Clemson to win the game.
Clemson is able to use multiple backs in the back field and if the Tigers can spare Etienne some hits and still win comfortably then that is exactly what they will do.

Similar to Trevor Lawrence, Etienne has huge expectations this season and is expected to “go off” every game by the media and fans. He will have plenty of ‘wow’ moments this season, but in a game that you win by 35 points, you would rather him come out injury free and ready for the rest of the season.

Key Takeaways from Clemson’s Dominant win at Syracuse (shakinthesouthland.com; Kantor)

for gbo

When the game started, Clemson’s offense sputtered as the Syracuse faithful howled loudly, but by the end of three quarters, the game was no longer competitive and the Syracuse student section was mighty quiet:

Syracuse student section in total exodus entering the 4th Q. Our defense is dominant!
— Ryan Kantor (@ryan_kantor) September 15, 2019
The Tigers won 41-6 and improved to 3-0. Beyond getting another step to accomplishing the team goals, here are my takeaways from the Tigers’ triumph:

Trevor Lawrence is human, but he’s still really good…

Trevor Lawrence threw two INTs, one on a bad decision where the receiver was completely covered and Lawrence tried to throw him open. At times, he seemed reliant on his elite receivers to win jump balls or make plays in open space. In fairness, they often did. Tee Higgins was awesome, reeling in 7 catches for 150 yards.
Lawrence now has 5 INTs on the season. His Heisman campaign is essentially over (especially with Tua Tagovailoa’s 444 yards this week and Jalen Hurts proving to be in the mix). The ACC is really bad though so getting 15 A+ games from Trevor Lawrence doesn’t really matter (it will matter more next year when we want to see him get drafted as highly as possible). Frankly, he can play his D+ game and Clemson should still be fine against teams like Boston College, who just lost to Kansas, NC State, who just got blown out by a rebuilding WVU, or Charlotte who comes to Death Valley this coming weekend. I tend to think the struggles give him a spark for further growth and refinement.

Travis Etienne’s Heisman campaign is dead too…

...

Pass protection, red zone offense down in this week’s stock watch (DO; Black)

On Saturday, a Syracuse-Clemson game was decided by more than four points for the first time in three years. The No. 1 Tigers (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast) dominated the Orange (1-2, 0-1) en route to a 41-6 victory, dropping SU below .500 for the first time since 2017.

While the Syracuse defense did its part, intercepting Trevor Lawrence twice in the third quarter and holding Travis Etienne in check, its offense struggled throughout. Opportunities set up by the defense didn’t become touchdowns and SU settled for two field goals on scoring chances in the second quarter.

After beginning the season ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time in 21 years, the Orange now sit at 1-2, with two nonconference home games coming before the heart of their ACC schedule begins.

Here’s whose stock is up or down after Syracuse’s loss to the reigning national champions.

The first-team All-ACC punter was arguably the player of the game for SU, which was forced to punt the ball away nine times against the Tigers. Hofrichter averaged a career-high 52.2 yards per punt, totaling 470 yards on the night, including three that pinned Clemson in its own 20-yard line.

Hofrichter was effective in limiting the Tigers’ momentum after they stopped SU drives, which happened often. Explosive Clemson wide receiver Amari Rodgers, who broke off an 87-yard receiving touchdown in the second half, managed to return just two of Hofrichter’s punts for a combined three yards.

Syracuse looking to prevent Clemson from 'beating them twice' against Western Michigan (DO; Black)

Dino Babers admitted that during his team’s 41-6 loss to Clemson, there were some exciting parts of Saturday’s game. And through three quarters, his team played well. There were too many parts of the game that weren’t so exciting for Syracuse (1-2, 0-1 Atlantic Coast), however, that took the Orange out of the contest.

Following a loss to the Tigers for the second-straight year, Babers’ message to his team is the same as 2018’s defeat.

“It happened last year,” Babers said on Monday. “Clemson can beat you once, but don’t let Clemson beat you twice.”

The fourth-year head coach was describing the Orange’s overtime loss to unranked Pittsburgh last season, in the game immediately following their 27-23 loss to the Tigers. Syracuse lost to the Panthers because of a hangover of sorts following its heartbreaking loss to Clemson, Babers suggests.

He’s hoping to prevent that sort of let down this season when Western Michigan (2-1) visits the Carrier Dome for the first time in program history on Saturday. The two teams faced off in last year’s season-opener in Kalamazoo, when an early SU lead turned into a high-scoring affair. Three rushing touchdowns by the Orange pushed them out to a 34-7 lead at halftime, but 21 unanswered points by the Broncos closed the gap to six points 10 minutes into the second half.

“Two different halves, one half our way, one half their way,” Babers said of last year’s matchup with WMU. “I’m looking forward to playing them once again knowing that coach (Tim) Lester knows a lot about this place and there’s 4-5 guys left on this team that were here when he was here.”

Syracuse Football: Analytics on offensive line struggles this season (itlh; Lee)

Syracuse football has struggled in the trenches so far this season. How bad has it been? Here’s a deep dive on the analytics in 2019.

The roof seems to be falling around the Syracuse football team; even though I do not believe the season is lost and neither should you. Although after back to back resounding losses to Maryland and Clemson we can start to digest what is going wrong here.

At first glance, there are several units that just have not played up to expectations yet.

On offense, nothing seems to have clicked. Whether it is quarterback play behind first-year starter Tommy DeVito, the receiving core not being as productive as we had hoped, or the offensive line who seems to be struggling with communication this is not “The Orange Is the New Fast,” we expected.

DeVito has been sacked 14 times so far this season. This ranks tied for second in most sacks allowed at the Division 1 level this year with ACC for Miami. 8 of the 14 sacks were against Clemson Saturday.

DeVito was under fire all game from the Tigers pressure which led to him ultimately not having enough time to release the ball before the pressure came, or at times making poor decisions like his interception deep into Clemson territory down the sideline. DeVito made a similar play forcing the ball against Maryland that also resulted in a pick; instead of throwing it away.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019...ino-babers-orange-vs-clemson-turning-rivalry/ (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers believes this annual game vs Clemson is turning into a rivalry. Here are all the details.

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers is in the midst of his fourth season on the hill. In every year he’s been here with the Orange he has played the Clemson Tigers.

In four tries, Syracuse is 1-3.

In most situations, this would hardly inspire confidence, but when you consider the level of the opponent this matchup is budding into something.

Orange head coach Dino Babers spoke after the game and believes this is actually turning into a rivalry:

“It’s really kind of turning into, as crazy as it sounds, it’s turning into a little bit of a rivalry even though we only won one out of three. They may not think so, but I enjoy playing them and I think our team enjoys playing them as well. Maybe not so much this year but we are looking forward to next year.”

Is Dino Babers crazy or is he on to something?

You can vote in our social media poll below whether you believe this Syracuse vs Clemson matchup is actually turning into a rivalry.

https://cnycentral.com/news/local/r...n-game-causes-dangerous-build-up-in-concourse (cnycentral.com; Johnson)

Many Syracuse football fans got trapped in the middle of a large build-up of people during the SU/Clemson football game on Saturday night, some describing the moment as ‘pure hell’.

"It was extremely tight and you just didn’t know what was going to happen,” said Mike Melfi, a fan who attended the game.

Melfi got caught in the middle of the confusion and says that out of at least 100 football games he’s been to at the Dome this one was the worst.

"The what if's. What if there was an emergency? What if I got trampled over?” Melfi says.

Melfi says he was trapped between Concourse 322-324 near Gate N before the game even started.

Video taken by CNYCentral's Jana Barnello, who was attending the game and caught in the bottleneck of people, shows fans packed into the concourse, barely moving for more than 20 minutes in some cases before and after kickoff.

https://www.wralsportsfan.com/holliday-nc-state-loss-keynotes-disastrous-week-for-the-acc/18639217/ (wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)

After Syracuse’s blowout 63-20 loss to Maryland (compounded by Maryland’s losing at Temple), it didn’t seem that the ACC’s standing among Power Five conferences could get much worse. But then it did.

Well-regarded Boston College lost to perennial Big Twelve bottom feeder Kansas – at home no less. Pitt muffed a great chance to knock off Penn State. Needing a touchdown to tie, the Panthers squandered a first-and-goal on the Nittany Lions’ one-yard line. And NC State, purportedly the nation’s best defensive team through the first two weeks, allowed West Virginia, the school with the nation’s most anemic offense, to run up 44 points.

The ACC is now just 2-7 against the Power Five conferences. And did I mention Georgia Tech lost to the Citadel? Mighty Clemson rolled as usual, 41-6 over Syracuse, but the Tigers at this point are carrying the ACC banner by themselves.

Mayhem at Mountaineer Field

It was supposed to be a meeting of NC State’s impregnable defense and a very “resistible force.” But somewhere over the past week, the brain trust at West Virginia reinvented the Mountaineers’ offense, because the unit that got absolutely drubbed at Missouri was nowhere to be seen Saturday against State. Instead of running the Mountaineers’ quick but small backs into non-existent holes between the tackles (the ‘Neers offensive line was hard hit by graduation), West Virginia used shovel passes, jet sweeps and reverses to manufacture a running game. Kendall McKoy (from Lexington, NC), Lenny Brown, and wide receiver Sam James all used their speed to advantage as WVU consistently set the edge on both run plays and the short pass plays that functioned as runs. And so quarterback Austin Kendall, who endured a miserable Midwest afternoon in Missouri, looked quite comfortable in the mountains of West Virginia, completing 27 of 40 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...gs-shuffled-after-shocking-losses/2344186001/ (usatoday.com; Keepfer)

After an impressive second week during which Atlantic Coast Conference teams won 12 of 14 games, the league fell flat on its face in Week 3.

Seven teams, or half the league, suffered defeats. Three came in embarrassing fashion. Heavily favored teams Boston College, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State laid eggs against Kansas, The Citadel and West Virginia, respectively, creating plenty of shuffling behind No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Virginia and this week’s No. 3 – up-and-coming Wake Forest.
1. Clemson
Top-ranked Clemson appeared as though it might struggle against Syracuse for a third consecutive year, then turned on the jets to pull away 41-6. By night’s end, the Tigers had amassed 612 yards total offense and displayed again why they’re chasing a fifth consecutive ACC title and are the undisputed kingpin in the league.
Up next: vs. Charlotte, 7:30 p.m. (ET), Saturday on ACC Network.

2. Virginia
Quarterback Bryce Perkins set career highs with 30 completions and 40 passes in a win against Florida State. The Cavaliers are establishing themselves as the primary threat to Clemson’s dominance. An ACC Championship Game showdown between the two could be brewing.
Up next: vs. Old Dominion, 7 p.m. (ET), Saturday on ESPN2.

3. Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons were pegged for a sixth-place Atlantic Division finish in the preseason media poll, which shows how little we know. Dave Clawson is adept at getting the most out of his talent, and that seems to be the case once more. Wide receiver Sage Surratt, a three-star prospect out of high school, had nine receptions for 169 yards with a touchdown in a 24-18 win against North Carolina.
Up next: vs. Elon on Saturday.

4. North Carolina
So how does North Carolina lose and move up three spots? Because the trio of teams ranked above the Tar Heels last week suffered worse defeats. Coach Mack Brown has the program moving in the right direction in his second tour at UNC. Getting by Appalachian State this week won’t be easy, and then the Heels will host Clemson in what will be a true barometer.
Up next: vs. Appalachian State, 3:30 p.m. (ET), Saturday on Raycom.

5. Duke
Duke? Well, in a schizophrenic league, anything’s possible, so why not the Blue Devils? They’re 2-1 and have a budding star at quarterback in Quentin Harris, who accounted for 344 yards and five touchdowns last week. Besides, they have an open date this week, so they can’t lose.
Next game: Friday, Sept. 27 at Virginia Tech.

6. Syracuse
Syracuse wound up getting hammered in the second half by Clemson last week but offered quite a challenge in the first half, trailing only 17-6 at the break. That’s enough to keep them in this spot, particularly given how their league brethren fared last week. The thought here is that the Orange are good enough to be bowl bound for a second straight year.

My four projected College Football Playoff picks – Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and Utah – remain unbeaten and unchallenged, so the top of my bowl projections haven’t changed.

Florida FB Recruiting Update - 9/16/19

What will it take to get FSU and/or Miami back to the top? Keeping more talent at home is a good start...

From BannerSociety: The Sunshine State Scorecard

In an average year, there are 45 or so four- and five-stars from Florida... The Florida colleges once regularly combined to keep more than half of the state’s four- and five-star players home. The state’s Big Three each took shares, with less than one to the state’s Group of 5 programs per year, on average. But in three of the last five years, they have failed to keep most of the top talent home... they’re doing an even worse job keeping the super-elite [National top-100 recruits] in state.
No doubt, when the Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes first climbed to the top of the college football world back in the 1980's, Florida recruiting was a little less competitive. Those programs could all return to the top 10, if not the top 5, but it would mean keeping more of the elite talent in-state.
As of this writing, the class of 2020 looks like a mixed bag for the Florida schools.
Twenty-three of the state’s four/five-star recruits from Florida are committed to staying home, while 19 are leaving the state and 12 have not yet made a verbal commitment...

Get ready to place your bids: The U.S. government is putting Jreck Subs up for auction.

The Watertown-based sub chain was seized by federal officials more than two years ago, after owner Christopher Swartz was convicted of fraud and tax evasion. U.S. Marshals had contracted with an experienced sub shop franchisee to manage the chain in the interim.

A federal judge in August ruled that the U.S. Marshals Office could sell Jrecks. The ruling put to end a years-long legal battle between investors who claimed a piece of the business. The judge ruled they would be entitled to a portion of the profits from the sale.

The U.S. Marshals Office announced today it has started accepting bids for the chain.
The company includes 33 sub shops (and the bread pans and all the other equipment in them) as well as the Jrecks corporate business -- its trademark and brand. The auction does not include Jreck shops operated by independent franchisees who are not involved in the criminal case.

Federal officials said interested bidders have until Oct. 7 to apply.

Um, this WAS the second loss in a row... Hey, maybe Syracuse was supposed to beat Clemson but MARYLAND beat you twice!?!
