Welcome to Bagpipe Appreciation Day!

Today we celebrate the bagpipes! The instruments have long been associated with the Scottish Highlands, although they have come from many different places, and there are many variations of them. They have also been used in many different contexts.

The main components of the bagpipe are the bag, chanter, and drones. The bag is usually made of animal skin or rubberized cloth. It is inflated either by having air breathed into it through a blowpipe or by using a bellows. Air can then be fed throughout the instrument to make the sound, by placing arm pressure on the bag. The bag allows sound to be continuous while giving players the chance to take breaths, as well as for several tones to be played at the same time.

The chanter, or melody pipe, has finger holes that let a player make notes to form melodies. The other pipes, called drones, may have single or double reeds. They play single, constant notes that accompany the melody. They are tuned with the chanter by lengthening or shortening their extendable joints. The pipes are in wooden sockets, or stocks, which are tied into the bag.

Syracuse Football: Taking a detailed look at the Orange’s 2021 class (itlh; Adler)

With three-star offensive lineman Kalan Ellis committing to Syracuse football the other day, we analyze the Orange’s 2021 recruiting cycle to date.

Three-star offensive lineman Kalan Ellis committed to Syracuse football a few days ago, and that gives the Orange 15 commitments at this juncture in its 2021 class.

Nationally in this recruiting cycle, has the ‘Cuse at No. 53 across the country, followed by No. 54 via 247Sports, with that rating service also slotting the Orange at No. 13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

All of the Syracuse football 2021 commitments so far are three stars according to 247Sports. Over at , 10 of the Orange’s pledges are three stars, and the remaining five commits are two stars.

Currently, the Syracuse football 2021 class is relatively balanced, with eight guys on offense and seven players on the defensive side.

On offense, the ‘Cuse has one quarterback, three offensive linemen, one running back, one wide receiver and a pair of tight ends. Switching over to the defense, and the Orange boasts four defensive ends/defensive tackles, two linebackers, and one defensive back.

In writing about Syracuse football recruiting efforts of late, I’ve had a lot of interesting conversations with ‘Cuse fans about the state of the program.

Given that the team has struggled a bunch over the past 15 years, expectations are certainly lower than they proved back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

However, many Orange fanatics remain disappointed that Syracuse football recruiting, as a collective whole, continues to fall in the 50s on a national scale. Some of these ‘Cuse fans think that Syracuse football should have classes that are in the top 25 to top 35.

Position Breakdown: Linebackers — 2020 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a unit-by-unit preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re taking a look at the linebackers, which will once again have to replace all of its starters.

WHO’S OUT

  • Andrew Armstrong: Armstrong started the first 11 games of the season at weakside linebacker and finished on the team with 78 tackles (41 solo) and was fourth in TFL (7).
  • Lakiem Williams: Williams was named to the All-ACC Third Team after finishing third in the ACC with 110 tackles. He started all 12 games at middle linebacker and ranked 26th nationally in tackles per game (9.2).
  • Juan Wallace: Wallace entered the transfer portal in the offseason, and reunited with some of his former Syracuse coaches at Kent State. He appeared in 24 games over two seasons.
  • Kadeem Trotter: As a redshirt sophomore, Trotter saw the field in six games on special teams. He was second on the depth chart at SLB before putting his name into the transfer portal back in May.
PROJECTED STARTERS
  • Tyrell Richards (WLB): The 6-4, 234 pound linebacker seems to be a good fit for the 3-3-5 system, having spent time at outside linebacker and defensive end during his Syracuse career. He appeared in 10 games in his sophomore season, picking up 14 tackles and a sack. He was listed on the spring depth chart as the team’s starting weakside linebacker.
  • Geoff Cantin-Arku (MLB): The Canadian linebacker appeared in nine games, mostly on special teams in his true freshman season. He also possesses good size at 6-4, 228 pounds, and was listed as SU’s starting middle linebacker on the spring depth chart.
  • Steve Linton (SLB): Linton appeared in three games during his redshirt season, and is now listed atop the depth chart as the team’s strongside linebacker. He, like Richards, is a converted defensive lineman, so he possesses the requisite size (6-5, 224) for a 3-3-5 linebacker.

Syracuse football strikes out on prospect, looks elsewhere (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Jason Henderson, a three-star linebacker recruit chose Old Dominion over the likes of Syracuse football. Now, the Orange must look elsewhere for an LB.

Syracuse football lost out on a prospective class of 2021 linebacker recruit. Jason Henderson, a Delaware Valley, Pennsylvania product, chose the likes of Old Dominion as his college destination. Henderson announced his decision via social media.

Blessed to announce that I am 110% committed to ODU #ReignOn
A post shared by Jason Henderson (@jason.henderson6) on Jul 24, 2020 at 9:13am PDT

Henderson would have filled the void for the Orange, who only received two commitments from linebackers in the class of 2021, with both being OLBs. Dino Babers and his crew only have one in the class of 2020 in Anwar Sparrow. While they aren’t desperate at the moment, it is clearly a position they’d like to be deeper at.

Syracuse Football: How much could players earn from endorsements? (itlh; Adler)

Per an article from 247Sports national college football writer Chris Hummer, two leading Heisman Trophy contenders for the upcoming term, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State QB Justin Fields, have earning potential that exceeds $1 million.

Hummer’s piece cites a study from Opendorse, an athlete marketing platform based in Lincoln, Neb. Blake Lawrence, a former Nebraska linebacker and CEO of Opendorse, told Hummer that “the average FBS player would be worth anywhere from $800 to $8,000 dollars a year.”

I have no doubt that guys like junior defensive back Williams, junior safety Cisco, redshirt junior quarterback Tommy DeVito and a few other Syracuse football players could possibly earn way more than $8,000 annually from endorsement avenues.

Cisco, for one, was an All-American in 2018 as a true freshman, and he’s getting a ton of pre-season accolades heading into the 2020 stanza, as well as first- or second-round buzz in the 2021 NFL Draft.

That being said, I can’t see Orange guys commanding anywhere close to what a Fields or a Trevor Lawrence could earn. For one, Clemson and Ohio State are much bigger football brands than Syracuse. Orange football players, by and large, also don’t have huge presences on social media.

Miami football schedule could be remade with focus on regionalization (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The ACC Coastal and Atlantic divisions could be suspended for the 2020 season with an emphasis placed on more regional games. That would create an entirely new schedule for the Miami football program.

The Miami football team could have an entirely new schedule for the 2020 season that emphasizes games against teams from their region. The ACC Coastal and Atlantic Divisions could be suspended for the 2020 season with the plan of going back to normal in 2021. That could create new temporary rivalries.

The likelihood would seem that the eight southern schools in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida would create a Southern Division in the ACC with the Northern schools beginning with Virginia Tech, Northwest to Notre Dame and east to Boston College would compete in a Northern Division of the ACC.

Manny Navarro of The Athletic reported this week that the 10-plus-one concept in the ACC, Big XII and SEC to preserve rivalry games between four teams in each conference could be too ambitious because of the Covid-19 numbers. Florida and Miami specifically have one of the highest rates of infection in the country.

Navarro reported the ACC is considering the regional concept for only the 2020 season and that would take precedence over the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions. What is not clear is if the plus one concept of each team in the ACC, Big XII and SEC would still schedule one non-conference game each for the 2020 season.

BOZICH | Should ACC, U of L throw Notre Dame a lifeline, without firm conference commitment? (wdrb.com; Bozich)

There is a short list of hot-button topics for University of Louisville football and basketball fans:

Paying Bobby Petrino $14 million not to coach the football team.

Chuck Smrt and his strategy of contesting the NCAA investigation that resulted in vacating the 2013 men’s basketball title.

The current two-game losing streak to Kentucky in football and three-game losing streak to John Calipari in hoops.

Time to grow the list: Notre Dame.

To be precise, assisting Notre Dame through this challenging novel coronavirus pandemic by inviting the Irish to play a 10-game Atlantic Coast Conference football schedule this fall without requiring ND to sign up for full-time ACC membership.

Just suggesting this is a possibility will inspire allegations that I brush my teeth with Lou Holtz toothpaste.

But I believe that would be the collegial thing to do.

The ACC and the Irish have already been dating for seven years, since they struck a deal that allowed (or required, depending upon your perspective) Notre Dame to compete in every sport but football or hockey beginning with the 2013-14 season.

Don’t force a marriage. Commit when both sides are ready. Assist Notre Dame in these stressful times because ACC football will benefit, too.

The Irish were ranked in the Top 12 in the final Associated Press poll in four of the last five seasons. Phil Steele ranked Notre Dame No. 9 in his 2020 yearbook. Playing Notre Dame generates publicity and competitive value. Louisville welcomed a record crowd, 58,187, when the Irish visited Cardinal Stadium last September.

ACC, Notre Dame eye 2020 football membership (ASP; Russo)

The Atlantic Coast Conference and Notre Dame are considering whether the Fighting Irish will give up their treasured football independence to play as a member of the league for the 2020 season that has been thrown into question by the coronavirus pandemic.

Two people involved in the ACC’s discussions about scheduling for the upcoming season told The Associated Press on Friday the ACC is looking at an 11-game schedule that would include 10 conference games and start Sept. 12. There are other models also being considered.

Under the 10-plus-one plan, Notre Dame would play a full ACC schedule, the people told AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because talks are still ongoing and details have not been disclosed. Whether those games would count in the standings and the Irish would be eligible to participate in the ACC championship game — and be eligible for the conference’s guaranteed spot in the Orange Bowl — is still to be determined. The final decision could come down to how revenue is shared between the conference and school, one of the people said.

The ACC’s university presidents will make the final call on a scheduling model. A meeting of the presidents is scheduled for Wednesday, one of the people said.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick declined comment when contacted by the AP via text. A request for comment from the ACC was not immediately returned. Online sports network Stadium first reported Notre Dame could possibly play as an ACC team this season.

In 132 years of playing football, Notre Dame’s storied program has never competed in a conference and its fans cherish the Irish’s status as a football independent. The private Catholic school in South Bend, Indiana, runs a national program with independence as the foundation of its brand.

Giving that up is not something Notre Dame would take lightly, even for a season.

Virginia, ACC likely headed for a 10-plus-one football schedule - Jerry Ratcliffe (jerryratcliffecom)

A lot of looming questions about college football should be answered sometime this week when the ACC and SEC are hoping to announce a decision on what kind of a season fans can expect.

While rumors swirl nationally about postponing the season until spring, it appears that the ACC, SEC and Big 12 are pushing hard to have fall football, though the start of the season could be pushed back into later in September or to October.

Apparently, the ACC is looking at two models for its season. Originally, the ACC was looking at an 8-plus-one schedule, where every team in the league would play eight games against ACC opponents, plus one nonconference game.

However, in recent days, a more favored option has risen to prominence. The newest model is that each ACC team would play 10 conference games, plus one nonconference game.

Notre Dame, which is a “football partner” with the ACC, would be included in the mix and play 10 games against ACC teams (rather than the six they normally play). There would be no divisions this season. The top two teams with the best records would play for the ACC championship.

With this format, Notre Dame’s games would count in the ACC standings, but it is unclear whether the Irish could earn the ACC’s spot in the Orange Bowl. According to sources, the ACC’s presidents would have the final say on that issue.

The presidents and ACC commissioner John Swofford would also have to address more issues, should the plan to allow Notre Dame to play a 10-game league schedule be approved. One of those issues would be whether or not the Irish could play for the ACC Championship, and then there’s how revenue sharing would work because Notre Dame has its unique TV contract with NBC.

Should pods be the way of the future for the ACC? (tomahawknation.com; Minnick & Flow)

A few weeks ago, the Richmond Times Dispatch’s David Teel wrote an article about how the ACC is considering using pods instead of divisions for the 2020 season to help alleviate scheduling concerns.

Report: ACC, Notre Dame considering football membership in 2020
Let’s plan out a regional Florida State football schedule

Since then, multiple reports have emerged that it’s the most likely route for the conference if football is played in 2020, along with an additional non-conference game.

Some of us at Tomahawk Nation say that’s not enough. Vive la révolution! Pods are the way of the future (as long as the correct circumstances are met)!

We wanted to share our thoughts on why, and on a few other related tangents, but we also want to hear yours. Check the questions down below, read our reasonings, and then continue the discussion in the comments below with your own answers and takes, so we can argue with each other and pretend it’s football season already.

Q: Are pods the best way to go for the ACC?

Evan: I really like the idea of pods. I feel that it allows for scheduling flexibility while maintaining a few teams for a base schedule. You can easily set it up so every team has a home and away game at least once every four years.

There is the problem of figuring out the champion from these pods as you have four pods instead of two divisions but that seems easy enough to figure out using tie breakers that currently exists for deciding who goes to the ACC Championship Game when two teams are tied atop a division. Yes, this based largely around football but that’s probably the most difficult sport to schedule considering the constraints on the number of days a week you can play along with the shorter schedule.

Nevada Football: Previewing The Wolf Pack Defense In 2020 (mwwire.com; Blake)

The Nevada Wolf Pack defense in 2019 had their struggles but improved towards the end of the season. Can they continue that improvement in 2020?

Previewing The Wolf Pack Defense In 2020

Similar to the offense, the Nevada Wolf Pack defense experienced some up-and-down moments in 2019. The Wolf Pack in their bad moments gave up 77 points to Oregon and 54 points to Hawaii at home. When the Wolf Pack defense had their good moments, they stifled the San Diego State offense in a historic upset victory late last season. These were the moments of a defense that was mostly young and trying to figure things out.

In 2020, the Wolf Pack brings in a new defense coordinator as Brian Ward comes over from Syracuse. Ward is inheriting a Nevada defense that returns 10 starters from last year’s defense that is looking to build on the good moments. Can the returning defensive starters learn the new defense and improve the defense in order to content for the Mountain West title?

Here is a 2020 preview of the Wolf Pack defense

Defense Line

In 2019, the Wolf Pack defense was one of the better units when it came to stopping the run. Nevada was fifth in the Mountain West in run defense as they gave up an average of only 4.31 yards per carry. Per Bill Connelly’s SP+ rankings, the Wolf pack were ranked number 40 in stuff rate (stuff rate is defenders stopping runners at or behind the line of scrimmage) and in power success rate the Wolf Pack were ranked in the top 25 in 2019.

Syracuse University reopening: What happens when the country’s No. 1 party school meets a pandemic? (PS; Carlson)

Parties are part of the culture at Syracuse University, a point of pride for many.

In a pandemic, they are also a problem.

“The idea of packing a couple hundred kids yelling, screaming, laughing, dancing, creating party plumes, is a horrible, horrible idea,” said Dr. Stephen Thomas, an infectious disease specialist at SUNY Upstate Medical University. “That is just a horrible idea. There is no better way to get a campus shut down than to do that.”

So what will happen when Syracuse, named the country’s No. 1 party school twice in the past six years by the Princeton Review, reopens in the middle of a pandemic?

No one knows for sure.

According to polling of more than 1,000 students done by The Education Trust-New York, students ranked time away from friends as the biggest challenge about the college experience during the pandemic. Syracuse students surveyed by syracuse.com | The Post-Standard said being back with friends was the biggest reason they wanted to be back on campus.

So with a student body eager for connection, can the school curtail partying enough to make it through the school year without a major coronavirus problem?
