Welcome to International Day of Sign Languages!

The International Day of Sign Languages is an unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. In 2020, the World Federation of the Deaf is issuing a Global Leaders Challenge. This challenge aims to promote the use of sign languages by local, national, and global leaders in partnership with national associations of deaf people in each country, as well as other deaf-led organisations.

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 72 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages.

Sign languages are fully fledged natural languages, structurally distinct from the spoken languages. There is also an international sign language, which is used by deaf people in international meetings and informally when travelling and socializing. It is considered a pidgin form of sign language that is not as complex as natural sign languages and has a limited lexicon.

Axe: The sounds of silence surround Syracuse football’s home opener (PS; $; Axe)

If Syracuse football’s home opener against Georgia Tech fell in the forest, would it make a sound?

It’s bad enough Carrier Dome 2.0 will be sans fans to experience a $118 million facelift that includes a new scoreboard, fancy fixed roof, state-of-the-art sound system and better Wi-Fi for you to stare at your phone the whole game.

To add insult to injury, the Georgia Tech-Syracuse game won’t air on local television. It has been relegated to app-only status, “airing” on Fox Sports Go or the ACC Network Extra app.

Syracuse's Carrier Dome turns 40 years old, gets new look (AP; Kekis)

Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome opened 40 years ago with an overflow crowd that set an attendance record that still stands.

Pete Sala remembers when the Dome was just an idea on paper.

It was the late 1970s, he was in high school, and the university had decided to replace aging Archbold Stadium with an indoor facility on the same spot featuring an air-supported roof. Sala’s dad, John, was director of the university’s physical plant, and brought home some of the drawings of the new building.

“I remember conversations at the kitchen table, my dad saying Jim (Boeheim, the basketball coach) was going kicking and screaming,” said Sala, now in charge of the Dome as vice president and chief campus facilities officer. “We had to drag Jim down here, and now look at this place. Who would have imagined that?”

Certainly not Boeheim, who had just become the coach in 1976 and was enjoying great success inside raucous Manley Field House, which seated just under 10,000.

“I remember. I was very skeptical,” Boeheim said. “I had a meeting with (vice chancellor) Cliff Winters. He ran the university. We were winning some 50 games in a row (at home), and I said, ‘Well, I really like where we are.’ And he explained to me, ‘We have this building and we can’t just play six football games in there. We can’t afford it. We’re going to be playing (basketball) in the Dome.’ I said, ‘OK.’ That was the end of that conversation.”

The Teflon-topped structure cost $26.85 million and was named after the Carrier Corporation, which paid $2.75 million for the naming rights in perpetuity, a financial mistake the school is trying to rectify. The first football game in the Carrier Dome was Sept. 20, 1980, and the place was an instant hit. The Orange beat Miami of Ohio 36-24 before 50,564 fans, still the attendance record.

Technical Tidbits 9/23: Tech Football Team Travels To Syracuse For First Time (fromtherumbleseat.com; Mura)

Gibbs Named ACC Rookie of the Week

You can’t really ask for a better collegiate debut than the one Jahmyr Gibbs had last week against the UCF Knights. For a true freshman, the numbers are just staggering. 219 all purpose yards. That bears repeating, 219 all purpose yards. This includes a 75 yard kickoff return on the game’s opening play. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry and also had 60 receiving yards, oh, and as if that were not enough, he had two touchdowns. Very impressive debut. Without any doubt he is well deserving of the ACC Rookie of the Week honor he received for Week 2. This follows true freshman Jeff Sim’s similar recognition received in Week 1. Congratulations to Gibbs and Sims.

Chris Martin explains decision to leave Georgia Tech team
You have to respect Chris Martin for his decision to step away from football. He made the decision earlier this year and informed head coach Geoff Collins and defensive line coach Larry Knight. It was a mature decision putting others ahead of himself and placing focus on his career after graduating. Good luck to him in his future endeavors.

Jackets Prep for First Trip to Syracuse
This article was full of fun facts and interesting historical tidbits about the Yellow Jackets football team and its opponent this week, Syracuse. Here are some of the interesting points:

  • Tech has never played Syracuse at their home field
  • The Yellow Jackets lead the series 3-0
  • In its 128-year history, this is only the third time the Yellow Jackets have played in the state of New York
Hopefully after their trip up to New York, that record will stand at 4-0. Gameday is only three days away!

Breaking down Jahmyr Gibbs’ debut: ‘Oh, my goodness’
As impressive as Jahmyr Gibbs’ debut as a Yellow Jacket was, it is only sensible to include another article about him. Offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude’s praise of the player is well deserved. He has already been drawing comparisons to players like Alvin Kamara and Reggie Bush. An explosive player like that can be a difference maker and it will be exciting to watch Gibbs’ career unfold on the Flats.

Georgia Tech currently ranks sixth in the ACC and 22nd nationally in total offense (454.5 ypg). Last season, the Yellow Jackets averaged 286.3 yards per game (last in the ACC and 127th out of 130 nationally).

Top Storylines

• Despite being conference-mates for seven years, Georgia Tech football will make its first-ever trip to Syracuse on Saturday afternoon.

• Although Syracuse joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013, by virtue of being in opposite divisions (Georgia Tech in the ACC Coastal, Syracuse in the ACC Atlantic), Tech football has not previously made the trip to upstate New York.

• The Yellow Jackets and Syracuse have met three previous times on the gridiron. The Jackets have won all three previous matchups, including a 56-0 thrashing of the Orange in their only previous contest as ACC foes on Oct. 19, 2013 at Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium.

• Georgia Tech is playing in the state of New York for only the third time in its 128-season football history and the first time in 95 years. Tech lost to Penn State, 28-7, in 1921 at the Polo Grounds in New York City, but returned to Gotham in 1925 to defeat the Nittany Lions, 16-7, at Yankee Stadium.

• The Yellow Jackets enter Saturday’s game with a 1-1 record, after winning their season opener at Florida State, 16-13, before dropping a 49-21 decision against No. 14/13 UCF last Saturday.

• The Jackets trailed UCF by just seven points in the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s battle, but faded down the stretch of the defeat.

• Georgia Tech’s offense continued its early-season surge versus UCF with 471 yards, its highest total in 18 games. Tech is averaging 454.5 yards of total offense per game this season (good for sixth in the ACC and 22nd nationally) and has surpassed the 400-yard mark in both contests. Last season, the Yellow Jackets averaged 286.3 yards per game (last in the ACC and 127th out of 130 teams nationally) and did not have a 400-yard game.

What to Make of the Syracuse Offense (SI; Payne)

Through two games of the 2020 season, the Syracuse Orange offense has accounted for 254-yards passing on 62 attempts (4.1 AVG) and 119-yards rushing on 69 carries (1.7 AVG). They’ve tallied 16-points, 14 sacks, 11 first downs, three field goals, two interceptions, one touchdown and zero wins. Saying things don’t look good on paper would be an understatement.

When asked where he thought the biggest problems were, head coach Dino Babers narrowed it down.

“The O-line has their issues, receivers have their issues, the quarterbacks have their issues,” Babers answered during his Monday press conference. “We're trying to eliminate one so we can focus on the next two, and then eliminate two so we can get to the one, until we can finally get going.”

Orange Watch: New era for Syracuse in renovated Carrier Dome - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Following six and a half months of work and a $118 million price tag, the new-look Dome is ready for Saturday’s Syracuse football game against Georgia Tech (12:00 p.m., ET / ACC Regional Sports Networks), even minus the general public.

What if they modernized the 40-year-old Dome and no one showed up?

If there was ever an irony, due to New York State health regulations during the reality of a national pandemic, that will practically be the case Saturday afternoon when a Georgia Tech football team makes it first-ever appearance on the SU campus.

No ticket-holding spectators will be allowed inside, leaving game personnel, building support staff, and a reduced number of media members as the only folks in attendance.

It was the exact opposite 40 years ago this past Sunday, September 20, 1980, when an overflow crowd of 50,564, still a home football game record, sat through a sweltering evening watching in awe inside the first domed stadium in the northeast as the Orangemen defeated Miami (Ohio) 36-24.

Attending the opener, we distinctly remember rhetorically asking other folks around us, “is this game really taking place on the Syracuse campus where Archbold Stadium used to be?”

Fast forward four decades later and the modernization of central New York’s most famous landmark, now replete with its roller coaster-looking support structure holding the new permanent roof in place, has brought the building up to speed with sports and entertainment venues across the country.

Will Things Get Better for SU? It’s Either Now or Never. – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

It’s no secret through two games, things have been straight-up bad for the Orange thus far. After receiving a thumping against North Carolina and turning in a shaky performance (at best) in its bout with Pitt, Syracuse fans would be right to lack optimism for the road ahead. However, might it be fair to say things will improve? At least a little bit? For one, they sure can’t get much worse.

Let’s just say, this coming Saturday will be very, very telling. The Orange finally returns home, albeit without a Loud House Crowd, to face Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets likely won’t pose as serious a threat as SU’s first two opponents, especially considering the energy that will, hopefully, come with playing in the new-and-improved dome. Regardless, even with Saturday’s matchup being a bit more favorable (on-paper) than SU’s previous two, a win is still far from guaranteed.

Georgia Tech is better than the 3-9 team it was last season. Freshman quarterback Jeff Sims has already proven to be a legitimate dual-threat weapon on offense, through just two games. The Yellow Jackets started off the year with a three-point win over Florida State before getting thumped at home by UCF. However, Sims currently sits second in the ACC in passing yards and sixth in rushing, as a quarterback. There is a caveat though.

Syracuse football players voice confidence after slow start, ready to turn the corner (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

The Syracuse University football team will aim for its first win of the 2020 campaign Saturday afternoon when Georgia Tech visits the Carrier Dome for a noon start.

The Orange is 0-2 after a pair of road losses to AP Top-25 teams in North Carolina and Pittsburgh, respectively.

But there's light at the end of the tunnel, which begins Saturday when the unranked Yellow Jackets visit the new-look Dome.

In fact, this weekend's matchup with Georgia Tech begins a 3-game home stand against unranked teams.

Syracuse Football: $118 million in Dome upgrades to debut with no fans (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football seeks to pick up its first victory of the fall term against Georgia Tech in the 2020 home opener at a spiffy new Dome with no fans.

This coming Saturday at noon, Syracuse football will welcome Georgia Tech to the Hill as the Orange attempts to turn around its 2020 campaign. No fans are permitted to attend this Atlantic Coast Conference contest, one in which Syracuse University leaders will unveil their $118 million in renovations to the Carrier Dome.

Per cuse.com, the newly renovated Dome, or the “stadium” as SU officials like to describe it as, includes a new roof, impressive scoreboard, upgraded lighting and sound, and a turf field.

The novel coronavirus pandemic led university administrators to prevent fans from watching the Orange and the Yellow Jackets (1-1, 1-0) in-person, which is a bummer given the Dome’s make-over. To add insult to injury, so to speak, Mike Curtis of Syracuse.com is reporting that the ‘Cuse home opener versus Georgia Tech “will not be broadcast live on local television Saturday.”

Syracuse Football: New polls include five Orange opponents in the ACC (itlh; Adler)

Nearly a half-dozen Syracuse football foes, both previous ones as well as future ones, are among those rated in this week’s two major polls.

Syracuse football faced off with, and lost to, a pair of nationally ranked teams in its first two weeks of the 2020 campaign. The Orange gets a respite in that regard this coming Saturday afternoon when the ‘Cuse hosts Georgia Tech from the Carrier Dome in the Syracuse football home opener for the fall term.

In the most-recent Associated Press top-25 poll, seven Atlantic Coast Conference squads are featured. They are No. 1 Clemson, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 12 Miami, No. 20 Virginia Tech, No. 21 Pittsburgh and No. 24 Louisville.

Turning to the Coaches top-25 poll, there are five ACC crews included, and they are No. 1 Clemson, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 14 Miami and No. 24 Virginia Tech. The Coaches ballot, this week, includes teams from the Big Ten Conference, which has reversed course and now plans to compete this fall.

Georgia Tech vs. Syracuse Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 9-26-2020 (winnersandwhiners.com; Rauzino)

...
I am selecting Georgia Tech in this one. The Yellow Jackets have displayed more promise than the Orange early this season. They stunned Florida State with a 16-13 road win to open the season and were hanging with #14 UCF before the Knights put it out of reach late, while Syracuse has lost both games by double-digits in points.

Furthermore, the Syracuse offense has been abysmal in their two defeats. They have received basically very little production at quarterback. Their two QB’s in Tommy DeVito and Rex Culpepper have only combined for 254 passing yards on a 47% completion percentage in two games. Also, Yellow Jackets’ QB Jeff Sims is a very talented true freshman and has definitely flashed his huge potential this season with 521 passing yards.

Prediction: Georgia Tech -7.5

New ACCN Show: "In Play"

PROGRAMMING ALERT: "In Play" Debuts on ACC Network Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m.

ACC Network (ACCN), the 24/7 national platform dedicated to ACC sports, will debut a new personality-driven news and information studio show In Play Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m.

The 30-minute program hosted by Kelsey Riggs and EJ Manuel, will deliver all things ACC related – and exactly as the name of the show suggests, anything and everything is on the table each Tuesday evening. In Play will also feature interviews with legendary ACC athletes and coaches, and discussion surrounding timely topics and big-picture events. Guests for Tuesday’s premiere include North Carolina and NBA legend Vince Carter, and Tampa Bay Buccaneer and former Pitt running back LeSean McCoy.

“Kelsey and EJ have dynamic personalities that will be entertaining for fans to see in this new show,” said ACCN coordinating producer Aaron Katzman. “We aim to entertain viewers with a mix of important off-the-field discussions and fun light-hearted charm all while peeling back the curtain on what it’s like to be a student-athlete in the ACC.”

Week 4 Bottom Five - Come on, CBS! (RX; HM)

Week 4 Bottom Five - Come on, CBS!

In this week's edition of CBS Sports' "THE BOTTOM 25" we find six ACC teams - exactly what you would expect from the network which has carried SEC football almost exclusively for years. As questionable as it is to include Florida State and Georgia Tech on this list, it's especially laughable to see the Louisville Cardinals listed since they were ranked last week, lost to a ranked opponent, and are still ranked... (note: ACC comments only here - to read them all, click the link!)

TEAM RANK RECORD BREAKDOWN

25. Florida State 0-1 The Noles were almost able to slip out of the rankings this week after taking the weekend off. Alas, they remain well within 6 feet of our rankings, unlike coach Mike Norvell, who is currently not allowed to be within 6 feet of anything. Seriously, get better, Mike. (Last Week: 17)

5. Duke 0-2 Duke went from looking pretty feisty against Notre Dame to looking uninspired against Boston College. The defense hasn't been bad, but scoring 19 points in two games is a concern. This week, the Blue Devils have the advantage of getting a Virginia team yet to play a game this year. (19)
4. UTEP
3. Syracuse 0-2 Remember 2018 when Syracuse averaged 40.2 points and 464.8 yards per game? Yeah, well, that's no longer the case in 2020. Through two games, the Orange have 19 points and 373 yards total. This weekend, they'll hope to improve upon those numbers against No. 16 Georgia Tech in an ACC/Bottom 25 showdown. (4)

BEERBOARD.jpg

As bars and restaurants climb back a Syracuse company, BeerBoard, is there to help (localsyr.com)

Bars and restaurants are clawing back some of their deep losses at the beginning of the pandemic, and football may be part of the recent boost.

BeerBoard, founded in Syracuse in 2005, provides up-to-the-minute data to their customers about beer sales. Their customers include every single Buffalo Wild Wings in the country, which is nearly 1,300 locations, including Township 5 in Camillus.

The roster also includes Hooters, Wing House, Twin Peaks, Mellow Mushroom, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Guinness, Heineken, and New Belgium Brewing, the makers of the popular Fat Tire line of beer.

“It wasn’t just turn the light switch on and it was right back up,” BeerBoard Founder and CEO Mark Young tells NewsChannel 9.

In June, as many places started to reopen, he says business for his clients was down as much as 80% to 90% year over year. After a gradual climb through the summer, Young says they’ve noticed the past couple of weeks a significant bump in sales. He cites football, college and NFL football, helping to start filling up bars and restaurants with people across the country.

“It’s a significant hit that the industry has taken, and even with these good, favorable signs, you’re still down that 40-50%, even more in certain states and certain concepts, certain locations, so you’re still down significantly from 2019,” Young says.

BeerBoard uses analytics to offer real-time data on any platform to GM’s about their beer sales. Flow sensors on every tap track each pour by the minute, that’s then reconciled to what’s rung up at the register.

When the pandemic hit, it forced BeerBoard to innovate; to help itself, and it’s clients once they were able to reopen to do it safer, stronger and better than before. One of those innovations has been contactless menus on your smart phone, using a QR code.

Young says, “I think there’s some of those contactless, touchless, more convenience that helps the operators be more efficient, but I think gives a great experience to the consumer as well.”
