National Bagel Day is devoted to bagels, and bakeries and stores often offer discounted or free bagels on the day. It is unknown exactly how bagels got their start. One story says they were invented in Krakow, Poland, where they appeared in the city's community regulations in 1610. This account says they were given as gifts to women in childbirth. Another story says a Viennese baker created bagels to commemorate the victory of Polish King Jan III Sobieski over the Turks in 1683. This account says the bread was formed into the shape of a "buegel"—or stirrup—because the liberated Austrians had clung to the king's stirrups as he had ridden past.
Bagels became a part of the Polish diet, and then part of the Slavic diet in general. By the mid-nineteenth century, they could be found in London, and they were first mentioned in English print, in 1892, as "beuglich." They likely found their way to the United States via Jewish immigrants from Poland, and were eaten by them especially during Sunday breakfasts. They were first mentioned in American print as "bagels" in 1916. The production and sale of bagels became significant in New York City.

Syracuse Offers JUCO OL (SI; McAllister)
Syracuse has extended a scholarship offer to class of 2021 junior college offensive lineman Jakob Bradford. Bradford announced the offer on Twitter, his ninth offer overall but first power five opportunity. His other offers include Arkansas State, Bowling Green, East Carolina, Incarnate Word, UMass, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and UAB. He is listed at 6-5, 300 pounds and brings versatility to the next level as he can play guard or tackle.
“High interest,” Bradford said. “We had a great talk on the phone and he (Mike Cavanaugh) sounds just like Coach Clegg here at Iowa Central and I’m looking for a coach like that.”
In addition to his offers, Bradford is also receiving interest from Missouri, Rutgers, Florida State and Texas Tech. Bradford said he is looking at a signing day (February 3rd) decision.
Syracuse has been recruiting Bradford for about three weeks, and he has a virtual visit scheduled for the end of this week, he said.

New Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea adds 4 to his coaching staff (apnews.com)
Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea has added four people to his coaching staff, a group including Justin Lustig from Syracuse as his assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and tight ends coach.
Lea announced the additions Thursday. The new assistants include Inoke Breckterfield coaching defensive tackles, Barton Simmons as the Commodores’ general manager and director of personnel and Nik Valdiserri as the recruiting coordinator.
Jovan Haye, who played at Vanderbilt before seven seasons in the NFL, will remain on staff coaching defensive ends.
Lustig spent the past four seasons at Syracuse as special teams coordinator. He also coached running backs in 2017 and wide receivers from 2018 to 2020. He also was assistant head coach the past two seasons. Syracuse led the Atlantic Coast Conference in net punting each of his first three seasons.
Breckterfield spent the past six seasons at Wisconsin. The Badgers went 56-19 with three Big Ten West Division titles and five bowl victories while allowing just 16.6 points and 107.7 yards rushing per game during his tenure.
Simmons played high school football with Lea at Montgomery Bell Academy and started four seasons at Yale as a defensive back. He worked at as a national analyst before going to 247Sports in 2010 working in the scouting department.

Duke coach gives up play-calling duties, realigns staff (wnct.com; AP)
Duke head coach David Cutcliffe is giving up play-calling duties amid multiple changes in responsibilities for the Blue Devils coaching staff following a two-win season.
Cutcliffe took over play-calling last season as the Blue Devils sought an offensive spark, but said Thursday he needed to return to taking a broader program overview.
“I increased the (difficulty) for me, and I don’t think that it allowed me to be everything that I needed to be for our team,” Cutcliffe said Thursday in a video call with reporters.
Duke improved its total offense (379.4) last year from 2019, but still ranked near the bottom of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Blue Devils also saw their scoring dip slightly (24.8) while losing a national-worst 39 turnovers.
The school said Jeff Faris would shift from coaching tight ends to quarterbacks while taking over as primary in-game play-caller. Faris was named co-offensive coordinator along with Re’quan Boyette, who is moving from coaching running backs to receivers.
Cutcliffe said he decided to shuffle responsibilities after cornerbacks coach Chris Hampton left to become Tulane’s defensive coordinator, saying that “realigning” the staff would create “new energy.”

ACC Football Players Earn 2020 All-America Honors (theacc.com)
Twenty-two Atlantic Coast Conference football players earned at least one 2020 All-America team recognition from either the Walter Camp Football Foundation (WCFF), Associated Press (AP), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) or Sporting News this season.
Nine different ACC teams had at least one All-America selection, led by Notre Dame with six players earning recognition. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was a unanimous All-America selection, while offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg and offensive guard Aaron Banks were consensus picks. Safety Kyle Hamilton was named on four different teams, earning first-team honors from the FWAA, second-team accolades from the AFCA and WCFF, and third-team honors from the AP. Offensive guard Tommy Kraemer was an AP third-team selection, and running back Kyren Williams was a second-team pick by Sporting News.
Miami place-kicker Jose Borregales, the 2020 Lou Groza Award winner, and Georgia Tech punter Pressley Harvin III, the 2020 Ray Guy Award winner, were both unanimous first-team All-Americans.
Pitt defensive ends Rashad Weaver and Patrick Jones II both earned consensus All-American honors, along with Clemson's Travis Etienne at the all-purpose designation.

Cuomo aide: Restaurants in orange zones can restart indoor dining (PS; $; Tampone)
Restaurants currently in New York’s Covid-19 orange zones can reopen for indoor dining immediately, an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today.
That includes eateries in the Onondaga County orange zone.
The move comes after restaurants in an orange zone in Erie County won the right to restart indoor dining in a court case. The state is allowing all orange zone restaurants to reopen for indoor dining to “ensure uniformity and fairness,” Kumiki Gibson, counsel to the governor, said in a statement.
Restaurants in orange zones had been barred from offering indoor dining, but could still provide outdoor dining and takeout.
Orange zone restaurants that choose to reopen for indoor dining now will have to abide by the state’s yellow zone restrictions, which include limiting diners to four per table. All bars and restaurants in the state are required to close at 10 p.m., even if they’re not in a coronavirus cluster zone.
It’s possible the reprieve for orange zone restaurants won’t last. The state is likely to appeal the ruling that granted the Erie County restaurants the right to reopen.
The state is still reviewing the ruling, Gibson said in the statement today.
