Welcome to International Bagpipe Day!

The International Bagpipe Organisation and the Bagpipe Society co-founded the celebration of International Bagpipe Day in 2012. They have helped to bring the bagpipe to new players since 1986. It is important to them that the history and playing of the bagpipes are not lost. Putting this day together was with the hope of bringing awareness of the over 130 different types of bagpipe throughout the world.

If you aren’t familiar with this ancient instrument, bagpipe is a term that means a wind instrument that uses enclosed reeds to produce sound. Air feeds the reeds with a constant flow of air from a reservoir in the form of a bag. In each area that it is found, the bagpipe may change in sound and shape. This is an ancient instrument and is claimed to be represented on a Hittite slab dated to 1000 BC!

2021 NFL Draft prospect profile: Trill Williams, DB, Syracuse (bigblueview.com; Pflum)

The NFL is constantly on the lookout for big, long, athletic cornerbacks to compete with the ever-increasing number of big, long, athletic wide receivers being churned out by college programs.

But the problem with big, long corners is that they need truly rare athleticism and fluidity to overcome their height and keep up with receivers throughout their routes. This brings us to cornerback Trill Williams out of Syracuse. The NFL will certainly pay attention to a corner who looks every bit of the 6-foot-2, 198 pounds at which he is listed, but is Williams athletic enough to be a cover corner at the NFL level?

The good news here is that even if Williams can’t stay a pure cover corner in the NFL, he has the experience and versatility to play multiple roles in a secondary. That size and versatility could certainly appeal to Patrick Graham and the New York Giants as they continue to build their very versatile secondary.

Prospect: Trill Williams

Clemson football: Only ACC program not to use transfer portal in 2021 (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

Clemson football continues to ignore the transfer portal.

This continues to be a hot topic among the Clemson football faithful but one thing remains true – most college football teams are taking advantage of the new college football rules.

Many fans seem to have this notion that an athlete only enters the transfer portal because he was a locker room cancer or could not cut it academically. In reality, this could not be farther from the truth.

Most players transfer because they were fed a load of garbage during their recruitment and the fit they thought they were getting never materialized.

Clemson football fans should look at the Tigers who have transferred recently and acknowledge that the majority of them were terrific young men who simply wanted more than they were getting from Clemson.

The Tigers need depth and immediate help at corner and the transfer portal has several currently available that could fit those needs.

According to 247Sports, there are currently several corners that were rated no lower than a 4-star coming out of high school. With former tight ends coach Danny Pearman now in charge of transfer portal recruiting, he should be taking a look at these guys and see who has the talent to come in and compete.

2021 ACC spring football: Six key questions and storylines to follow as practices get underway (cbssports.com; Patterson)

2021 spring practice is either underway or about to begin all across college football, and it's welcomed with open arms after the ups and downs of the 2020 offseason. Players and coaches alike are still going through rigorous COVID-19 protocols in order to participate, but to even have these workouts after the entire country was shut down abruptly last March feels like a win for the sport.

A return to spring practice and a full spring schedule also brings back into focus the things that can be gained, learned and discussed around these programs during this crucial period of development. Position battles at quarterback and throughout the depth chart begin in earnest during these spring practice sessions, and teams with new coaches or coaching changes look to use them as a chance to build the foundation for what they want to accomplish in the fall.

In the ACC, there are 13 teams that begin every spring practice looking to improve and close the gap with Clemson. The Tigers have been pushing the standard forward for the entire conference throughout the College Football Playoff era and any other conference championship contender -- Miami or North Carolina draw the most intrigue as we begin 2021 -- knows the path to a league title goes through the Tigers.

Upstate NY restaurants can soon seat up to 75% capacity, but will that help them? (PS; $; Cazentre)

The latest easing up on restrictions for bars and restaurants in Upstate New York will allow them to seat up to 75% of their normal capacity, an increase from the current limit of 50%. It could start as soon as March 19.

But will that really change anything? With so many other restrictions still in place, perhaps not.

“It doesn’t mean that much if you still have to have that six feet of separation,” said Bud Loura, a local dining industry consultant, referring to table spacing that is part of the current Covid-19 social distancing requirement. “You can only fit so many tables and so many people in that case. Many places can’t get close to 50% much less 75% as it is.”

He noted that schools in Onondaga County have recently been cleared to open with students allowed within three feet of one another. “If we could get to three feet, like the schools, that could make a difference,” Loura said.

Lauren Monforte, owner of the Beer Belly Deli on Westcott Street, has the same thought. “We can’t add another table and keep social distancing,” she said.

And if the requirement that all customers must be seated to eat or drink remains in effect, that presents another issue. One bar owner said he’d have to install a few dozen new stools to be able to hit the 75% mark with seating and that doesn’t make sense since the regulations change so frequently.

Still, the general feeling is that the restrictions are moving in the right direction for the industry.

Always fun at the Boxing Hall of fame parade that they had several Bag pipe bands go thru.

Interesting to see Sam Johnson on the transfer QB list. Pretty sure we offered him very early, like Underclassman early
