Welcome to Brutus Day!

Often reviled (certainly by Dante) was Marcus Junius Brutus Minor, known to most as “Brutus” or more simply “Et tu Brute?” So why dedicate a holiday to this most heinous of individuals? This slayer of Kings and betrayer of friends? Why, my good people, because Brutus Day reminds us that even in this modern age, betrayal, subterfuge, and (metaphorical at least) back-stabbing is still alive and well.

Syracuse Football: 2022 4-star CB Jacolby Spells ‘upside through the roof’ (itlh; Adler)

Jacolby Spells, an elite defensive back in the 2022 class, owns more than 20 scholarship offers, but he has whittled down his list of finalists to five teams, including Syracuse football.

The 5-foot-11 Spells, an extremely talented and versatile player who has suited up on both sides of the football field, recently revealed via his Twitter page a top five of the Orange, along with Georgia, Indiana, Miami and West Virginia.

A junior at the American Heritage School in Plantation, Fla., Spells previously played wide receiver but in the spring and summer of 2020, he transitioned to cornerback, according to Spells’ bio on the 247Sports Web site.

Per 247Sports, during the 2020 season, Spells “totaled 32 tackles and an interception for a Patriots team that captured a 5A state title.”

In reviewing Spells’ bios on various recruiting Web sites, I found that he holds a slew of really impressive high-major offers, so for the ‘Cuse to make his top five is certainly encouraging.

ACC Football programs are either already into spring practice or getting set to take the field and on Late Kick Live Ep 120 Josh Pate discussed several of the biggest questions on his radar. At FSU all eyes are on the health status of QB McKenzie Milton while at Clemson Dabo Swinney is ready to retool his WR unit for another title run. Will Georgia Tech's Jeff Sims take a leap forward in year 2? What about UNC's defensive front? And Manny Diaz has plenty of building to do with questions around QB and WR. New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul is a Syracuse graduate

With Cuomo under fire, NY Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul treads carefully (PS; $; AP)

As a chorus of top Democrats demanded New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s resignation over sexual harassment allegations last week, the woman who would succeed him if he stepped down did what she’s done for most of her time in office: Kept a discreet profile.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul delivered virtual remarks at an array of small events statewide. She sent tweets that hyped small businesses in the Adirondacks, reminded people to wear masks and urged them: “When it’s your turn, get vaccinated!” She herself got inoculated against the coronavirus Friday, drawing rare local TV coverage.

If the Democrat’s schedule hasn’t changed lately, what may be different is the number of people tuning in to learn more about the politician who would become the state’s first female governor if Cuomo can’t hold on to power.

After two terms living deep in the shadow of a governor famous for demanding the spotlight, Hochul is an unknown quantity to most New Yorkers. Baruch College political science Professor Doug Muzzio said Hochul is probably preparing herself now in case she’s called on to step in.

“The next stage of the game is if he resigns and Hochul becomes governor. What does that mean? Who is she? What does she think?” Muzzio said. “New Yorkers are totally, totally unaware of this woman. I mean, I spent half my life focusing on this stuff. And I don’t know that much.”
