Welcome
to Oranges and Lemons Day!

Oranges and Lemons Day takes place every year in London, usually on the third Thursday of March [1], even when Easter or St Patrick’s Day intervenes, at the Church of St Clement Danes in London.

Children who go to the nearby St Clement Danes Church of England Primary School attend a service, after which the church’s bells are rung and the children are given each an orange and a lemon.

Since 1919, the bells of the church have also played the melody to the song (melody and words below) 4 times a day: 9 am, noon, 3 pm and 6 pm.

The Church of St Clement Eastside makes a rival claim to be the church mentioned in the rhyme, though they do not hold an Oranges and Lemons Day.

LITERATURE & LORE
Here is a recording of the bells playing.

“Oranges and Lemons,” say the bells of St Clement’s.
“You owe me five farthings,” say the bells of St Martin’s.
“When will you pay me?” say the bells of Old Bailey.
“When I grow rich,” say the bells of Shoreditch.
“When will that be?” say the bells of Stepney.
“I do not know,” says the great bell of Bow.

Projecting Syracuse's 2021 depth chart: QBs Tommy DeVito, Garrett Shrader set to begin competing (offense) (247sports.com; Bailey)

Three months removed from the end of a disappointing 2020 season, Syracuse football is gearing up for the start of spring practice. The Orange will take the field for the first of 15 sessions on March 30, athletic director John Wildhack said on Tuesday.

Under sixth-year head coach Dino Babers, SU will look to bounce back from its second one-win campaign since 1948. And that starts with being able to complete a full offseason. Almost exactly one year ago, Syracuse's campus shut down just three days into spring ball due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Recently hired coordinators Tony White and Sterlin Gilbert were forced to install and instruct via Zoom and then had to balance assessing their personnel for the first time with preparing for the season during fall camp.

"For us to be different in 2021, we need to have a different offseason," Babers said in late November. "There is no doubt about it."

Syracuse's players have been participating in winter workouts for the last five weeks and no one on the team has tested positive for Covid-19, Wildhack said. He said no one in the program has tested positive for Covid-19 since the spring semester started, and he noted the importance of avoiding positive tests in regard to keeping the offseason progressing.

"One of the things that's so critical is to stay Covid negative because you don't want to have to shut down your offseason strength and conditioning," Wildhack said. "... It's so critical for us where we can build that momentum and the conditioning and the strength. This is a really critical offseason program for us and we need to do so without any interruptions."

Virginia Tech Football: Hokies' 2021 Spring Preview (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

The Hokies enter an important spring with questions on both sides of the ball

Virginia Tech hopes to get back on track after a 5-6 mark last season, and spring practice is coach Justin Fuente’s first opportunity to put the pieces in place for a winning record in 2021. After a 19-8 start to his tenure from 2016-17, the Hokies slipped to 6-7 in ’18 and are 13-11 over the last two years. The 2020 season was unusual for every team, but Fuente and his staff certainly feel pressure to return to the program to a winning record in ’21.

The ACC’s Coastal Division is often unpredictable, but North Carolina and Miami are solidified at the top going into this season. With 14 starters back, Virginia Tech hopes last year’s up-and-down campaign can translate into improvement and a jump close to the top two in the division. Offensively, quarterback Braxton Burmeister will be under the spotlight this offseason, and a replacement must be found for running back Khalil Herbert. The defense returns eight starters and should benefit from a complete offseason to work under coordinator Justin Hamilton.

5 Storylines to Watch During Virginia Tech's Spring Practices

1. Develop Braxton Burmeister at QB
With Hendon Hooker transferring to Tennessee and Quincy Patterson leaving for North Dakota State, Burmeister enters spring practice as the No. 1 quarterback. Knox Kadum and Texas A&M transfer Connor Blumrick will certainly provide competition this offseason, but the job is Burmeister’s to lose at this point. The Oregon transfer connected on 48 of 84 throws for 687 yards and two touchdowns to one pick, while adding 182 yards and two scores on the ground. Burmeister closed 2020 with the best performance of his career (212 yards in the win over Virginia) and finished the year averaging a solid 8.2 yards per attempt. This spring is a good opportunity for Burmeister to get comfortable as the No. 1 quarterback, while also working to elevate his understanding of the offense and performance for 2021.

2. Develop a Pecking Order at RB
Khalil Herbert spent only one season at Virginia Tech – but the Kansas transfer certainly made the most of his time. In 11 games for the Hokies, Herbert ran for 1,182 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 179 yards. The Florida native posted six games over 100 yards, including 207 against Duke and 162 versus Virginia. There’s no question Herbert leaves big shoes to fill, and Virginia Tech could turn to a committee of backs to replace his production in 2021. Raheem Blackshear (255 yards), Jalen Holston (189), Marco Lee (16), and Keshawn King are the front-runners to see time at running back this fall. Does the spring produce a clear No. 1 or a defined pecking order in the backfield?

Ones to watch on Clemson football team, according to guys turning pro (greenvilleonline.com; Shanesy)

for gbo

Clemson football is losing its top four offensive playmakers as it transitions into the NFL.

So, which of the young replacements, the rising sophomores, have the best chance to break out next season and chart their own paths toward the pros?

Stepping in for quarterback Trevor Lawrence is a clear choice. D.J. Uiagalelei had standout performances in his two starts as a freshman, leading Tigers to a victory against Boston College and to overtime at Notre Dame, throwing for a combined 781 yards. His 439 yards in South Bend was the most ever by an opponent of the Fighting Irish. Uiagalelei is now the clear No. 1.

At the other skill positions, it’s not quite so obvious. Wide receivers Amari Rodgers and Cornell Powell as well as running back Travis Etienne shared their thoughts on young stars to watch.

Rodgers and Powell picked different players. For Rodgers, it’s Ajou Ajou.

“Be on the lookout for him for sure,” Rodgers said.

Ajou (6-foot-3) is a native Canadian (Brooks, Alberta) who had a quiet season as freshman, making just two catches, although one was a 35-yard touchdown against Georgia Tech. The highlight of his season was playing the Michael Jackson role in an elaborate "Thriller" takeoff video put out by Clemson for Halloween.

Clemson football: ACC eyeing to change its football perception (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

ACC eyeing to change its football perception and what it means for Clemson football

Do you remember when Dabo Swinney took over the Clemson football program and what he said when talking about his goals for the conference? ‘ACC: Another Clemson Championship.’

And he has done exactly that.

Clemson football has won six-straight ACC Championships and in many of the conference title games, the Tigers have won handily.

In the past six seasons, Clemson holds a 52-3 record against conference opponents (if you count Notre Dame as a member in 2020) and the Tigers have lost just two total games against full-time conference opponents since 2015.

That’s complete and utter dominance.

While Clemson football dominating the ACC should never get old, the conference changing its perception is absolute ‘must’

When people look at Clemson’s schedule, they always add a big ‘but’ to the conversation because the Tigers play in the ACC.

New ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips spoke with David Teel of the Richmond Times in an exclusive interview and said that he wants the conference to focus on the ‘success of football’ moving forward.

State of Wake Forest Football 2021

Let's begin reviewing ACC football programs with Wake Forest.
A look at their win% (smoothed by taking a 5-year rolling average) shows a pretty clear trend under the direction of current WFU Head Coach Dave Clawson...

Hard to overstate the job Dave Clawson has done at Wake. He took over when the program was in its worst spot in 2 decades and has it at nearly its best point in 60+ years. pic.twitter.com/lCyud4g3Wp

Wake Forest may be the smallest school in the power five (it is). It may even have less revenue and fewer resources to work with... but don't ever accuse them of not trying!

Syracuse University suspends in-person dining, increases testing as Covid outbreak grows (PS; $; Mulder)

Syracuse University is suspending in-person dining on campus and requiring twice-a-week Covid-19 testing of some students to curb a growing outbreak of the virus in dormitories.

SU has reported 66 new Covid-19 cases since late last week, 20 of them in the last 24 hours. Most of the infected students live in residence halls on the main campus. Earlier today an SU official said the outbreak has the potential to infect many students.

SU announced this afternoon it’s acting quickly to halt the spread of the virus.

The school is taking these steps starting at 9 p.m.:

  • All in-person dining on campus, including the Schine Student Center, will offer grab and go service only.
  • Access to public lounges in DellPlain, Shaw and Booth residence halls will be temporarily suspended.
  • All students living in main campus residence halls will be required to get tested for COVID-19 twice a week. The Covid Program Management Office will contact all affected students and provide a testing schedule.
  • SU will distribute disposal paper masks to all residents of DellPlain, Shaw and Booth halls. Until further notice, any individual living or working in those dorms will be required to adhere to a double-masking policy while in those buildings. The only exception to this policy applies to students when they are in their own rooms.
“While we are optimistic these actions will help stem the spread of the virus, additional public health measures may be required if these initial actions prove inadequate to break the current chain of transmission,” SU said in an announcement. “As soon as the data indicates that the current cluster of on-campus infection is controlled, these measures will be rescinded.

SU currently has 192 students in quarantine, an increase of 50 since Tuesday. The school has reported 109 positive cases in the last 14 days.

I watched the Colgate-@Lafayette game this past Saturday (ESPN+). Patriot League canceled football games for the Fall so this is their truncated season. Lafayette is in the Patriot League’s South Division. Bucknell, Fordham, and Lehigh are their remaining games, then Championship game between winners of North and South. Lafayette won 24-10. Of note was SU's Garth Barclay's brother, Gavin #70, at RT for a lefty QB. He's a Sr. 6'6" 320. He has started every game since his Fr year and got high praise from the announcers.

Oh those Spring breakers! Our friend's 23 year-old son and his girl friend went to a get-together a couple of weeks ago. They found out one of the attendees tested positive. Ten days later he and and his girl friend come down with covid. Our friends' son was sick as a dog for over a week. Couldn't get out of bed. Temp of 104. Just short of going to the hospital. Couldn't eat anything but advil because he thought his head would explode. But, I know...I know...you are immune.
