Celebrating-Language-UN-English-Language-Day.jpg
Welcome to English Language Day!

English is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN). In February 2010, the UN created six language days "to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization." The days were also created "to increase awareness and respect for the history, culture and achievements of each of the six working languages among the UN community." The creation of the days was part of the 2010 International Mother Language Day. Besides English, there are days that honor the Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, and Spanish languages. Events are held at the UN Headquarters each year, and the day is celebrated at other UN locations—known as duty stations—around the world.

April 23 was chosen for the holiday's date because it is the observed birthday and death date of William Shakespeare, who is seen by many as the greatest writer of the English language. True to its name, the language originated in England. Similar in form to Frisian, Dutch, and German, it is a West Germanic language and is part of the Indo-European language family. English is known as a "world language" because it is so widely spoken; about 2 billion people—close to a third of the world's population—can speak it. It is the main language used in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and some island nations in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is an official language in some other countries, including South Africa, India, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Where each ACC football program stands in recruiting for 2022 (247sports.com; Straka)

College football seasons come and go, but you'll find rather quickly that recruiting never stops. The moment one class is signed, the attention immediately turns to the next cycle -- that process, in fact, assuredly started before the previous class even inked their national letters of intent. Simply put, if you want to win, you have to be able to effectively pitch your product, and past success certainly never hurts in that regard.

Look no further than Clemson football for proof of that. The six-time-defending ACC Champs -- national champions in 2016 and 2018 and the runner-up in both 2015 and 2019 -- have signed the ACC's top-ranked recruiting class in each of the past four cycles that have been completed, and there's a strong -- if not likely -- chance that it will be more of the same tune once the 2022 class is finalized. That being said, some other programs in the conference are off to hot starts on the recruiting trail, but it has yet to be seen if they can keep that momentum going as more puzzle pieces fall into place.

All that being said, here's a look at how each ACC team is currently faring in the world of recruiting for the 2022 cycle, including each program's standing in both 247Sports' national and conference team recruiting rankings.

ACC rank: 1

Points: 138.10

If anything is certain, Jeff Hafley has gone hard on the recruiting trail as he prepares to enter his second season as the head coach at Boston College. As it stands, the eleven prospects the have committed to the Eagles make the group the ACC's largest recruiting class -- the main reason why BC currently sits atop the ACC in recruiting rankings. Pro-style passer Peter Delaportas ranks as the highest-rated pledge for the program thus far in the 2022 cycle, as the Pope John XXIII (Sparta, New Jersey) product ranks 19th nationally at his position, per the 247Sports Composite Player Rankings.

There's still plenty of time before the early signing period rolls around, but Scott Satterfield and Co. have yet to land any pledges for the 2022 cycle. For the meantime, Louisville does not have a listed ranking in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings for the cycle. Four different four-star prospects -- defensive tackle Christen Miller, defensive tackle Chis McClellan, wideout Dakota Twitty, and inside linebacker Stone Blanton -- are considered to be the top targets in this cycle for the Cardinals.

MIAMI

ACC rank: 10
National rank: 69
Points: 22.91

What's to come in year three of the Manny Diaz era in for the Hurricanes? Miami only has one 2022 pledge thus far, but it's a promising piece of talent in the form of four-star dual-threat quarterback Jacurri Brown. Out of Lowndes (Valdosta, Georgia) High School, Brown checks in ranked as the No. 4 player at his position nationally for the 2022 cycle, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and is certainly the kind of player that a program likes to build a recruiting class around. As far those who could join him, a pair of 5-star in-state products --defensive end Shemar Stewart and safety Kamari Wilson -- are among the top targets that are currently listed as "warm" when it comes to interest in playing for the 'Canes.

NORTH CAROLINA

ACC rank: 4
National rank: 27
Points: 85.97
Commits: 4
A trio of four-star recruits are included in the four players from the 2022 cycle that have pledge to play for Mack Brown at the next level of their careers. Princess Anne (Virginia Beach, Virginia) receiver Tychaun Chapman and Green Run (Virginia Beach) running back Tayon Holloway gave their verbal commitments to the program this past December, and another four-star joined the pack when Shelby (North Carolina) weak side defensive end Malaki Hamrick committed to the Tar Heels in late February. Three-star Life Christian Academy (Colonial Heights, Virginia) tackle Treyvon Green has also pledged to play for the program.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE

ACC rank: 13
National rank: 76
Points: 14.16
Commits: 1
As it stands, Cary (North Carolina) center Rylan Vann is the only 2022 prospect that has given his word to play for the Wolfpack. A three-star prospect, Vann is regarded as the No. 3 prospect in the nation in the cycle at his position, per the 247Sports Composite Player Rankings. Other top targets for NC State include four-star running back Michael Allen and four-star linebacker Torren Wright, among others.

PITTSBURGH

ACC rank: 9
National rank: 48
Points: 43.18
Commits: 3
The 2022 crop for Pat Narduzzi got kickstarted last September when three star Mansfield (Ohio) safety Aveon Grose gave his verbal commitment to become a Panther. Smyrna (Delaware) defensive tackle Elijah Statham and Central Valley (Monaca, Pennsylvania) defensive tackle Sean Fitzsimmons have joined in the group in the time since, with Statham committing in January before Fitzsimmons committed to Pitt earlier in the month.

ACC rank: 7
National rank: 44
Points: 53.35

Versatile Michigan defensive back Cornell Perry became the program's first verbal commitment of the cycle in mid-February and New Jersey running back LeQuint Allen followed suit on March 5. The end of March then saw Dino Babers and Co. pick up two more commitments, first Holt (Michigan) defensive end Malachi Davis on March 26 and then American Heritage (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) defensive tackle Belizaire Bassette a day later on March 27.

CBS Sports: NCAA changes college football overtime rules: 2-point tries required in second OT, then 2-point shootouts
Teams will now be forced to go for 2-point conversions after touchdowns beginning in the second overtime If a game is still tied after the second overtime, teams will engaged in a 2-point conversion shootout, similar to how hockey games are decided with penalty shots.
Personally, I would've preferred it if they had moved the starting line back with each subsequent overtime until someone failed to score.

Is your state on track to pass an NIL law? Has it already passed one?

Here's the @SINow updated tracking map, which shows that a whopping 11 states (including Ohio) have not even introduced an NIL bill.

ACC: Play 'Em Before They Lose

In this post, I'm going to argue for more early-season ACC football games and for pushing out of conference games - especially against power five opponents - later in the season. Why? Read on...

One reason why ACC teams were ranked higher in 2020 than in 2019 is that they didn't open the season with a bunch of tough non-conference losses. In fact, ACC teams only played one non-conference game each, mostly of the cupcake variety (conference teams went a combined 12-3 in these games).
Normally, however, ACC teams have a reputation of playing extremely tough games OOC - some of which simply make no sense (e.g. Duke vs. Alabama or Syracuse vs. LSU). That may sell tickets in the short run, but it causes problems for the rest of the conference.
It definitely hurts the reputation - if not the bottom line - of the conference when teams like Clemson or Miami are trying to make a playoff run and find that there are no ranked ACC opponents on their schedule. Just take a look at early-season losses from 2016-29 to see what I mean:

Wk#2019 OOC Losses
0Miami lost to Florida
1FSU lost to Boise St,
Duke lost to Alabama,
Louisville lost to Notre Dame
2Syracuse lost to Maryland

Next restaurant voucher deal might be bigger than first, Ryan McMahon says (PS; $; Knauss)

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon today said he might roll out a second phase of the county’s successful restaurant voucher program with even more than the $500,000 spent during the first go-round.

The initial voucher program sold out Tuesday in less than five hours, during which the county sold 9,000 vouchers that provide matching funds up to $100 to spend at any locally owned restaurant.

Those vouchers must be redeemed for a gift card (or a meal) by May 10. Once you buy a gift card, it won’t expire. But any vouchers not redeemed by May 10 will be invalidated and offered for resale by the county, McMahon said today.

Beyond that, McMahon said he is strongly considering a second voucher program bigger than the first. He was surprised at how quickly the vouchers sold out, he said.

“I thought it was a good idea, or else we wouldn’t have did it. But it turned out it was a really good idea,’' McMahon said. “We were taken aback by the success of it.”

The program was launched to spur $1 million in spending at local restaurants, which struggled during the pandemic lockdown. McMahon said he’d like to add to that stimulus. He’d also like to help potential patrons who were frustrated at how quickly the vouchers sold out, he said.

After reselling any vouchers left over from the first phase in May, county officials will decide on whether to offer a second round of vouchers, McMahon said.

“We want to get it back out there … for those that didn’t have an opportunity to get one,’' he said.
