Welcome to National Bratwurst Day!

National Bratwurst Day is dedicated to bratwursts—sometimes simply known as brats—which are sausages made from pork, veal, or beef, that contain sweet spices and seasonings such as nutmeg. They originated in Nuremberg, Germany, in the 14th century, and their name is derived from the German words "braten", meaning "to fry" or "to roast", and "wurst", meaning "sausage". There are over forty varieties of brats made in Germany, and they are many times served on a roll with mustard. They are also quite often accompanied by sauerkraut and potato salad. They were introduced to the United States in the mid-19th century by German immigrants, and have become especially popular in Wisconsin.

How to Observe National Bratwurst Day

National Bratwurst Day should be celebrated by eating brats. If you happen to be in Wisconsin, you could visit Johnsonville, the largest sausage maker by revenue in America. You could also stop at one of these establishments for a brat. If a trip to Wisconsin is not possible, make some of their "beer brats" at home.

Syracuse Football: Is the quarterback situation really so bad? (itlh; Fiello)

Welcome to the third part of my four-part series discussing concerns I have heard or seen on social media that people think will be a struggle to overcome this year for Syracuse football. In part 3, I will examine Tommy DeVito and why I have faith in him, as well as how the team is set up just in case he does struggle. Here is a breakdown of the four parts I have discussed so far as well as what is left:

•Is This The Taj Harris Redemption Tour?
•Can The Offensive Line Tow The Line?
•Tommy DeVito: Are We Headed To Success City Or Struggle Town?
•With Winter Coming, Is Coach Babers Sitting Atop Seat Warmers? (coming soon)

October 20, 2018. Eric Dungey is struggling against UNC and with 5:07 left in the game, head coach Dino Babers decides to put in freshman Tommy DeVito, who throws not only the game-tying TD to help take the game to OT but also throws the game-winning TD pass in double overtime to win the game. DeVito also stepped in for Dungey in September against Wake Forest, guiding Syracuse football to victory and giving him ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

Why do I bring this up? I think it’s important that if we constantly discuss DeVito’s struggles last season and even some the season before that we remember that he had shown potential and leadership as well. Often times we see the struggles and want to shun them without taking the good and the bad both into consideration. I’m not a “what have you done for me lately” judge of someone’s character and abilities…I try to look at their whole story.

Syracuse freshman TE Landon Morris enters transfer portal, says role didn't align with SU's recruiting pitch (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football freshman tight end Landon Morris has entered the transfer portal before playing a collegiate snap, a source told 247Sports. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Indianapolis native enrolled in the spring.

He said on Sunday that his experience on campus didn't align with the role that SU's coaching staff outlined to him during his recruitment. Morris was sold on the notion that he could be a pass-first tight end as he primarily played wide receiver previously for Nazareth Academy.

"I don't feel like I was being utilized the way I was being recruited," Morris said in a text message. "I was told I was going to be used as a stretch tight end/receiver, but it just didn't play out that way. The coaches had nothing but good intentions on their part, however it didn't work out. I know the strong parts of my skill set and I know I can be a valuable piece to the right puzzle."

Morris said in May that SU tight ends/inside receivers coach Reno Ferri and running backs coach Mike Lynch led a recruiting pitch centered around a dynamic role. While most of the Orange's tight ends through five seasons of the Dino Babers era have focused their efforts on traditional, in-line responsibilities, Morris believed he could function with more versatility -- on the wing and split out wide.

UAlbany football aims to ‘shock the world’ against tough early schedule (dailygazette.com; Shinder)

The schedule is ambitious, to say the least.

But from head coach Greg Gattuso on down, the message from the UAlbany football team heading into the meat grinder that is the 2021 season — especially the grueling three-week starting stretch — is simple.

Bring it on.

“If we’re all on the same page and we’re all prepared,” UAlbany quarterback Jeff Undercuffler said, “we’re going to go shock the world.”

One of Gattuso’s constant refrains is that there’s never an easy game on the Great Danes’ schedule as members of the CAA, but what UAlbany has on the menu this year is extra spicy.

In addition to the team’s nine CAA games, UAlbany’s two nonconference games are both doozies — and they’re just 14 days apart.

The season opens Sept. 4 with a trip to Fargo, North Dakota, to take on a North Dakota State team that’s won eight of the last 10 FCS national championships, and is followed two weeks later with a rather shorter trip west on the NYS Thruway to face Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.

Oh, and the game in between those two — the Sept. 11 home and CAA opener against Rhode Island — won’t be a picnic, either.

“The scheduling is unrelenting this year,” Gattuso said, “and that’s fine. We know what it’s going to be.”

UAlbany is coming off a rough spring season, where the team went 1-3 after the schedule was moved to the spring because of restrictions related to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Great Danes’ spring, which ended with three consecutive losses, was cut even shorter as the team opted to cancel its final two games due to mounting injuries.

Returning a far healthier bunch has vastly improved the mood for the Great Danes since the team reported for its preseason camp earlier this month.

“My first day coming back, I was all happy,” defensive end Jared Verse said. “Everyone’s back healthy and smiling. People got the surgeries that they needed, some got the rehab that they needed. Everyone’s back full go, hitting the gas pedal.”

Verse is one of the Great Danes most anticipating the spotlight the team will be under at the start of the season.

From all the frustrations the program suffered through in the spring, Verse was one of the team’s biggest bright spots, racking up four sacks and a conference-best 10 tackles for loss in the spring en route to claiming CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

The games against North Dakota State and Syracuse will represent the highest talent level Verse has gotten the chance to pit himself against — North Dakota State has produced a pair of top-three NFL draft picks at quarterback in the last five years in Carson Wentz and Trey Lance — and will give the 6-foot-4 defensive end a chance to showcase his considerable athletic talent.

Eagles DT Chibueze Onwuka Out for Season (bcinterruption.com; Patel)

Chibueze Onwuka is reportedly out for the season after suffering an injury during camp, per Pete Thamel.

Sources: BC defensive tackle Chibueze Onwuka will miss the season after suffering an injury during camp. The Buffalo transfer started five games for BC last year as a grad transfer and had 2.5 TFLs and 2 forced fumbles. A big loss for BC’s defense, which is thin at DT.
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) August 15, 2021
The 2020 transfer from Buffalo figured to be an anchor on the Eagles defense, after a solid first season with the team. BC was looking to drastically improve its defensive line play and it seemed as though things were trending in the right direction prior to the loss. The Maryland native is a graduate student who should be able to come back better next year if he so chooses.

As seen above, the tackle position is a little thinner. TJ Rayam returns with plenty of experience at the position, and Khris Banks enters as part of the Temple heist. Behind them are sophomores Izaiah Henderson and Cam Horsley, with Ryan Betro available as well. You could see freshman Owen Stoudmire from Ohio and DC’s Nigel Tate get into the mix as well.

Sending out our best for Chibueze.

This is the seventh simulation of the 2021 Syracuse Football Simulation hosted by Orange Fizz. 'Cuse opened the season with an impressive 29-0 win on the road at Ohio. Dino Babers and Company dropped the Dome Opener to Rutgers 57-40 in a shootout. SU responded with a 30-7 win over in-state foe UAlbany. The monentum gained from that victory was halted just one week later when Syracuse fell to Liberty 34-28. The loss to the Flames marked the end of non-conference play and unfortunately things didn't get off to a good start in ACC play. Syracuse was stagnant in a 23-13 loss against Florida State. Perhaps another quarterback change can jumpstart the offense? Well it did but not how you would've expected it to play out against Wake Forest. Tommy DeVito replaced Garrett Shrader in the fourth quarter after the MSU transfer was knocked out of the game with a concussion. DeVito proceeded to lead three touchdown drives including the game winning series with a minute to go. TD13 led SU to its first ACC win with a 36-32 triumph. Unfortunately the momentum stopped and ended with the win over Wake. Clemson came to the Dome and thrashed the 'Cuse 44-13. SU wasn't very competitive against the Tigers but they're the class of the ACC. Virginia Tech was thought to have been a more winnable game for Syracuse but that was in fact not the case, VT actually beat the Orange worse than Clemson in a 51-20 decision. So two consecutive conference losses for SU, can the slump end with Boston College? We'll see, BC is a sleeper team in the ACC and many believe they could contend for the Atlantic title in 2021

Column: Why would the ACC. Big Ten, Pac-12 form an alliance? (dailyunion.com; Russo; AP)

The Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten and Pac-12 are exploring ways to counter the Oklahoma-Texas expansion and curtail the Southeastern Conference's growing power in college football.

The commissioners of the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 have discussed how creating an alliance between leagues that span the country could provide both financial benefits and policy making pull as the NCAA begins to hand off more responsibilities to conferences.

The discussions were first reported by The Athletic. Two people with knowledge of the discussions confirmed them to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no one has been authorized by the conferences to speak publicly about the talks. The conversations were described as conceptual and exploratory.

There are two important events on the horizon that could influence how quickly some type of agreement — formal or otherwise — between the three conferences comes together: The next meeting regarding College Football Playoff expansion is scheduled for Sept. 28. And the NCAA has called for a special constitutional convention that is expected to convene no later than Nov. 15.

There is no obvious precedent in big-time college sports of an alliance of conferences, so this could be whatever the leagues involved make of it.
In this case, there are two areas where the conferences believe working together has potential to fortify all three.

SCHEDULING AND REVENUE

The untapped revenue-generating potential in college football is in creating more big games. Or maybe better described as games between big brands
A scheduling agreement among the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 could lead to more made-for-TV marquee games: Think Southern California-Clemson; Ohio State-Miami; Penn State-Florida State; Oregon-Michigan.

Of course, those types of games happen already. Oregon is at Ohio State and Washington plays at Michigan on Sept. 11.

An alliance could make those juicy matchups more frequent, with the hope that they unlock more revenue in media rights agreements and ticket sales.
The Pac-12's current TV deals with Fox and ESPN expire in 2024 and new commissioner George Kliavkoff's job is to figure out how to increase both revenue and exposure for a league that has been falling behind its peers in both.

The ACC has the opposite issue, locked into its exclusive deal with ESPN until 2036. New commissioner Jim Phillips is charged with finding ways to keep up with the SEC and Big Ten money-making machines in the absence of the bump that would come from going back on the market.

Game Changer: NIL breaks scholarship limit (RX; HM)

Game Changer: NIL breaks scholarship limit

Almost lost in the noize was this potentially critical story:

BYU football walk-ons will have tuition paid for through NIL agreement
Thanks to a partnership with a local company, every walk-on on BYU’s football roster will have their tuition paid for this year.
BYU announced a new agreement with Built Brands, LLC on Thursday that will include “multi-year” NIL deals for all members of the Cougars’ football team. For the program’s 36 walk-ons, the compensation is “in the amount comparable to the costs of tuition for the academic year.”
Per BYU, 123 of its football players will enter into agreements with Built, a Utah-based manufacturer and distributor of protein and energy products...

That removes the teeth from the scholarship limit. Who cares you can only carry 85 football players on scholarship, if NIL is allowed to pay for as many as you want - unlimited roster sizes (with all of the ugly talent-hoarding that will inevitably come with it).
What do the BYU players have to do to "earn" this NIL money?

The players who agree to the NIL deals with Built will wear the company’s branding on their practice helmets and participate in “experiential events.” Additionally, BYU’s walk-on players will “provide additional social media and experience promotions” for the brand.

This is a game changer - not necessarily for the better, if you like a little parity with your football.

If the SEC goes to a 9 (or 10) game schedule... (RX; HM)

If the SEC goes to a 9 (or 10) game schedule...

...thus committing to 5 SEC away games every other (?) year... will the SEC stop playing home and away series with P5 opponents in order to guarantee 7 home games? Will they decide they want to control ALL 12 games every year, thus requiring that the only away games are in-conference? What impact would that have on the other power conferences?

I've compiled a list of all P5 non-conference games from 2022 through 2028, not including games against Big XII teams (games against Texas and Oklahoma will be in-conference, and the other teams may or may not be considered P5 by then...)

SEC Non-Conference Games vs ACC/B1G/Pac/ND (2022-2028)

  • Vanderbilt vs Wake Forest (22, 23), Virginia Tech (24, 25), NC State (26, 28), Stanford (27)
  • Tennessee vs Pitt (22), Syracuse (25), Nebraska (26, 27)
  • S Carolina vs Clemson (annual), UNC (23, 28), VT (25), Miami (26, 27)
  • Missouri vs BC (24), Illinois (28)
  • Kentucky vs Louisville (annual)
  • Georgia vs GT (annual), Oregon (22), Clemson (24), Louisville (26, 27), FSU (27, 28)
  • Florida vs FSU (annual), Utah (22, 23), Miami (24, 25), NC State (26), Cal (26, 27), Colorado (28)
  • Texas A&M vs Miami (22, 23), Notre Dame (24, 25), Arizona St (26, 27), Louisville (28)
  • Ole Miss vs GT (22, 23), Wake Forest (24, 25), USC (25, 26), Oregon St (27)
  • Miss. St vs Arizona (22, 23, 24, 25), Minnesota (26, 27)
  • LSU vs FSU (22, 23), UCLA (24), Clemson (25, 26)
  • Auburn vs Penn St (22), Cal (23, 24), UCLA (27, 28)
  • Arkansas vs Notre Dame (25, 28), Utah (26)
  • Alabama vs Wisconsin (24, 25), FSU (25, 26), Ohio St (27, 28)
By my count, that's 99 games (counting the annual ACC/SEC rivalries) which could be partially or even totally eliminated in coming years.
What of the teams affected - how could they replace these marquee SEC non-conference match-ups?

Teams affected, by year, if SEC cancels all P5 OOC games:

Quite frankly, it's not possible to replace all of the SEC games - primarily because so many of them are against a single conference: the ACC! There just aren't enough opening with Big Ten and Pac-12 teams combined to make up for those double SEC schedules. So, what could the ACC do? Well, without those SEC/ACC rivalry games, there would no longer be any reason to stay at 8 conference games, so...

Alabama Football: Three conference ‘Alliance’ idea is to buffer SEC (bamahammer.com; Evans)

Alabama Football
fans can watch recent developments from the B1G, the ACC and the Pac 12 with interest but without concern. Whatever ‘Alliance’ may evolve will not threaten the SEC. What is good for the SEC is good for Alabama Football and vice versa. The rest of college football must scramble to keep up.

The possible alliance between the three formerly Power Five conferences is about scheduling more high-profile matchups and reaping more future media deal dollars. ‘Formerly’ in the preceding sentence was used because current trends indicate the future will be a Power Four group of conferences. In the Power Four will be 60, some-odd teams that can decide to rebuild the upper tier of college football to best suit their needs.

The eight Big 12 teams jilted by Oklahoma and Texas may be able to expand the size of the Big 12. That rebuild will almost assuredly require what are now Group of Five teams. The Big 12 name may or may not survive. Whatever it is called, it will not be a Power Five conference.

Realignment is not just about dollars. It is also about power to gain the most expanded Playoff opportunities and to control the destinies of the upper-tier programs in the potential Power Four structure.

Will such changes slow or quicken the diminishing control of the NCAA? Elite college football programs possibly exiting the NCAA is a real possibility. On Saturday, Dennis Dodd provided a detailed look into what college football’s near future may hold for a new ‘Power Four.’

Rapper Nas takes the Chevy Court stage at the New York State Fair in 2015. Nas will play the fair again in 2021.Michael Greenlar | syracuse.com

Chevy Park? Chevy Court? Concerts at 2021 NYS Fair (Fair FAQ) (PS; $; Tampone)

If there’s one thing almost guaranteed to be the same in 2021 as it was before the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s that concerts at the New York State Fair will be one of the event’s major draws.

That could be even more true this year than in the past. The 2021 fair has a titanic music lineup with over 50 shows scheduled, including Train, Melissa Etheridge, Third Eye Blind, Nelly, Noah Cyrus, Justin Moore, Nas, The Beach Boys and more.

The shows will be more or less evenly split between the fair’s two big concert sites: Chevy Court, located near the main gate and surrounded by same of the busiest buildings at the fair, and Chevy Park.

Chevy Park? Huh?

That’s the stage located at the west end of the fairgrounds that was previously known as the New York Experience Stage when it first debuted several years ago. The new stage was part of a massive overhaul of the fairgrounds that began in 2015 and included removal of the fair’s old track and grandstand.

The stage has hosted shows in the past, but it’ll play a more prominent role in 2021. The fair has moved its biggest concerts there in part because crowds for some Chevy Court shows were becoming uncomfortably large, fair spokesman Dave Bullard said in an email.

Jordan was part of the group that made the Familia Video, amongst other videos in recent years.
Yup.

He is really well thought of, very respected and I think this move ensures he will be staying at Syracuse for the long term. Any top notch video that has come out of SUAD in the last couple of years has his fingerprints all over it.

This is great fnew or SU fans, great for SUAD (I assume he will continue to do work for them as well) and great for Newhouse students. Jordan is a huge talent.
