Welcome to National Beer Lover's Day!

Today is dedicated to beer, and to everyone who loves to drink it! Beer making can be traced to about 6,000 years ago in ancient Sumeria. At that time, beer was cloudy because of lack of filtering, and it was drunk through a straw. By 2000 BCE, the Babylonians were brewing 20 types of beer. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans made beer, although wine became much more popular with the Romans—they considered beer to be the drink of the Barbarians and it was only popular on the edges of the Empire. Germanic groups were brewing beer by 800 BCE.

Because of contamination, beer was a much safer drink than water during the Middle Ages; it was drunk by people of all ages from all classes. The Catholic Church even got involved with brewing beer, and abbeys were testing grounds for improvements in brewing. Beginning in the ninth century, in Germany, hops began being introduced, standards were set up for beer, and beer began being mass-brewed. The 1516 Beer Purity Law—Reinheitsgebot—said a certain level of quality must be met for German beer. All beer could only be made with water, hops, malted barley, malted wheat, and yeast.

Syracuse football has released its depth chart for the home opener vs Rutgers on Saturday. The only offensive change is at the tight end position, where Chris Elmore no longer appears. PFF report: Who were Syracuse's top performers in season-opening win at Ohio? (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football gradually pulled away from Ohio for a 29-9 victory to open its 2021 season on Saturday night. A revamped front five paved the way for a consistent rushing game, the Orange's 3-3-5 defense bent, but didn't break, and a special teams unit without a full-time coordinator didn't miss a beat.

Let's take a look at how Pro Football Focus assessed the performance of the team as well as notable individuals:

Top 5 performers (min. 15 snaps):

CB Duce Chestnut (89.7):
PFF credited Chestnut with 11 tackles, including four stops. That's three more in total than the official stat sheet and one fewer solo. But his covreage grade of 90.1 is what truly lifted the freshman to the top here. He allowed five receptions on eight targets, giving up just 13 yards. Chestnut's two big plays -- a fourth-down PBU and late-game interception -- were also key factors.

QB Tommy DeVito (78.2): With only 18 passing opportunities over 57 snaps, DeVito didn't have much of a chance to impact the game with his arm. He was sacked once, threw the ball away twice and PFF credited one drop to Taj Harris (likely on the fly route that went through the receiver's outstretched hands). DeVito completed 11 of the other 14 passes and was especially efficient on play-action, nailing all four of his attempts for 48 yards. There wasn't a significant efficiency variation in terms of pressure vs. being kept clean.

Syracuse Game Saturday: Syracuse vs. Rutgers prediction, odds, spread, line, over/under and betting info. for week 2 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football opens its 2021 home slate with a battle versus former Big East foe Rutgers.

Syracuse football, despite being a slight underdog, went on the road this past Saturday night and took down a solid Ohio team, 29-9, from Peden Stadium in Athens, Ohio.

Sophomore running back Sean Tucker was nothing short of fabulous, as he rushed for a career-high 181 yards and a touchdown. A beleaguered offensive line from last year looked pretty darn good in the 2021 season opener.

The Orange defense gave up nearly 350 yards of total offense to Ohio, which is a member of the Mid-American Conference. However, the ‘Cuse defense also made some timely stops, which resulted in the Bobcats only netting a couple of field goals for the entire contest.

Considering that Syracuse football only managed one win in the 2020 campaign, this 20-point victory on the road to commence 2021 is really encouraging to me.

The Orange (1-0) continues its non-conference slate this coming Saturday, Sept. 11, with an afternoon battle inside the Carrier Dome against former Big East Conference foe Rutgers. This past Saturday, the Scarlet Knights absolutely throttled Temple at home, 61-14.

Rutgers, now a member of the Big Ten Conference, will prove a tough test for the ‘Cuse.

Syracuse vs. Rutgers odds for week 2

According to WynnBET, the Orange is +2.0 points for the spread. Rutgers, meanwhile, is -2.0 points on the spread. The over/under is currently at 51.5 points.

Orange Watch: Syracuse football should meet Rutgers each season - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: With the recent announcement of an alliance between the ACC, Big Ten, and Pac 12 moving forward, which includes a scheduling component for football, now would be a good time for ACC member Syracuse and the Big Ten’s Rutgers to form an annual union by playing each season.

Memo to Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack and his counterpart at Rutgers Pat Hobbs: Meet as soon as possible to discuss how the two football programs could start playing each year, alternating between the Dome and SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.

As the Dome gets ready to host football spectators for the first time since 2019, Saturday’s SU-RU matchup between the two 1-0 teams (2:00 p.m. ET / ACC Network) was originally the back-end of a home-and-home series, but last year’s meeting in New Jersey was wiped out due to the scheduling dilemmas posed by the COVID-19 outbreak limiting each ACC team to one non-league game, and for a short time, darkening the entire Big Ten schedule.

Syracuse-Rutgers is a natural for two universities 236 miles apart (four-hour drive) battling for many of the same recruits in the mid-Atlantic and I-95 corridor. Despite the schools being in two different states, it’s a rivalry that’s not much different than current ACC end-of-season games between southern comrades Clemson-South Carolina, Florida State-Florida, Georgia Tech-Georgia, and Louisville-Kentucky.

Head Coach Greg Schiano spoke with members of the media ahead of Saturday's matchup at Syracuse.

Rutgers’ Gavin Wimsatt has arrived. Could he practice for Syracuse week? (NJ; Sargeant)

Gavin Wimsatt is officially a member of the Rutgers football program.

Two days after he played in a Kentucky high school football game, the highly touted quarterback recruit arrived on campus and reported to the football program on Sunday night, Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano said Monday during his weekly press conference at the Hale Center in Piscataway.

“He and his family got into town last night,’’ Schiano said. “He’s going through all the on-boarding right now, as far as physicals (and) he’s (enrolled) for school so he’ll start classes tomorrow.’’

Pressed on the plan for Wimsatt this week, Schiano noted the 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback is essentially in uncharted waters as far as joining a college football team a few days after playing in a high school game. In August, quarterback Quinn Ewers opted to skip his final year at Texas high school power Southlake Carroll and enroll at Ohio State — a move, Schiano said, Wimsatt’s family wanted to follow.

"He’s the second player in I think the history of college football to do it (so) definitely it’s a new situation,’’ Schiano said.

How Close is Shrader to Playing? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Klein)

After all the excitement in Central New York with an athletic, shiny, SEC quarterback transferring to Syracuse, many fans might have walked away from the 29-9 win over Ohio unsatisfied. Garrett Shrader only had one pass for eight yards and one carry for eight yards, while Tommy DeVito managed a run-heavy offense.

Head Coach Dino Babers promised a two-QB system out of camp. He was hoping one of the signal callers would separate themselves so he wouldn’t have to resort to the tandem style. But after the win over the Bobcats, Babers explained why DeVito was the lone quarterback.

“He’s very calm,” Babers said. “It’s not an issue of lack of knowledge. When he’s executing at a level like this, it’s hard to take him out.”

But the question is what level was DeVito really executing at yesterday. The redshirt junior completed 11 of his 17 throws for 92 yards. He didn’t throw any touchdowns or interceptions and only took one sack. Meanwhile, he netted 49 yards on 7 attempts on the ground. The Orange never trailed, and DeVito was never asked to make a big play.

So with the majority of DeVito’s plus-production coming on the ground, it does seem like a head-scratcher to sit Shrader considering the run game is his strength. It seems hard to believe that DeVito did anything that Shrader can’t. Yet, DeVito has Babers’ support.

Pondering with Patterson: Thoughts on Ohio-Syracuse football game (thepostathens.com; Patterson)

What are the odds of your home team hosting an opponent they have not played in 100 years within the four years that you are in school? On Friday night, the Bobcats kicked off their 2021 football season against the Syracuse Orange, who they last faced in 1921 at Syracuse’s Archbold Stadium, prior to the construction of their Carrier Dome. To make matters even cooler, the game marks the first time that the Bobcats hosted an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. As if the situation was not bizarre enough, I happened to get to attend the game with a diehard Syracuse fan.

My dad is from Baldwinsville, New York, which is just outside of Syracuse. With the luck of scheduling and pre-purchased tickets (the minute that the Syracuse opener was revealed), we enjoyed a weekend in Athens highlighted by Bobcat football. With nine games on the football schedule, and Syracuse being one of nine, it was an opportunity not to be taken advantage of. Despite the loss on my end, the atmosphere at the game was incredibly fun, and it felt good to be among other students and fans alike at the event.

The evening started with the Marching 110’s pregame, which was accompanied by various high school bands. The bands included were as follows: Nelsonville York High School, Alexander High School, Olentangy Berlin High School, Southern Local High School, Clermont Northeastern High School, Southeastern High School, Federal Hocking High School, Olentangy Orange High School, Batavia High School, Northridge High School, Granville High School, West Muskingum High School, Colonel Crawford High School, Conotton Valley High School and Wellston High School. The bands also joined the 110 for “Watermelon Sugar” during their halftime performance show. The 110 certainly did not disappoint, nor did the accompanying acts, if the cheers erupting through Peden were any indication. The music set the mood and continuously remained hopeful, keeping everyone’s spirits up.

History of Rutgers vs Syracuse (rutgerswire.usatoday.com; Fisher)

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are riding high after dominating their opening week matchup against Temple, 61-14. Each phase of the game had their standouts in this non-conference matchup. Before they start their Big Ten schedule, they still have a few games out of conference to get through. They’ll look to build their momentum at the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Syracuse Orange on Saturday, September 11 at 2:00 PM EST. Let’s take a walk down memory lane as we look back at the history of the series between these teams.

The teams have played off and on dating all the way back to 1914, but have not faced each other since 2012. Overall, Rutgers is 12-29-1 against Syracuse all-time. Recently, the Scarlet Knights have taken the advantage in the matchup, winning seven of the last ten encounters. The teams did not play each other once between 1950 and 1975.

Historically, the Orange have dominated this matchup. They have the longest winning streak in the history between the teams, not losing in 12 straight confrontations from 1987 to 1998. Syracuse also and won 15 of 16 from 1987 to 2002. If you thought the Rutgers’ 61-14 win was impressive this past weekend, Syracuse holds the largest margin of victory in the history as well – 70-14 final back in 1998.

Teel: Hokies, FSU counter ACC football's ominous Week 1 results (richmond.com; Teel)

Virginia Tech and Florida State clashed for college football’s national title in the January 2000 Sugar Bowl and met in the inaugural ACC championship game six seasons later. The Hokies and Seminoles revere their Hall of Fame coaches from that era, Frank Beamer and Bobby Bowden, and are blessed/cursed with ravenous fans.
Last weekend, those enthusiasts were at their full-throttle best, reminding the nation of all we missed during the pandemic season of 2020, even as the collective ACC endured ominous results.

From Thursday-Monday, the conference basked in prime-time television exposure, and if there were any settings more raucous than Tech’s Lane Stadium on Friday and FSU’s Doak Campbell Stadium on Sunday, I missed them.

One-off neutral-site games such as Georgia-Clemson in Charlotte and Alabama-Miami in Atlanta afford programs scheduling flexibility and host cities an economic windfall, but heaven knows college football is best staged on campus, with student sections and tailgate lots packed beyond capacity.

Would the Hokies have survived North Carolina without the Lane faithful? Could the Seminoles have erased an 18-point, fourth-quarter deficit against Notre Dame on the road? I have my doubts.

“It was just a really special atmosphere,” Tech coach Justin Fuente said, “as good and as energetic a sporting event as I’ve ever been in, from start to finish.”

“Incredible,” FSU coach Mike Norvell said of the Seminoles’ crowd.

Clemson has won six consecutive ACC championships and earned two national titles during the span, but the league sorely needs other programs to consistently push the Tigers, programs with tradition and TV appeal. Virginia Tech and Florida State fit the bill and offered encouraging signs Week 1.

The Ole Miss offense was just too high-powered for Louisville in their opening game of the 2021 season. The Rebels beat the Cardinals, 43-24. Cardinals quarterback Malik Cunningham led the way with 191 passing yards and a passing touchdown, plus 79 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. Louisville TE Marshon Ford led the Cardinals receiver with 50 yards receiving. Ole Miss QB Matt Corral threw for 381 yards and a touchdown and added 55 yards rushing and a rushing TD.

Big XII to add 4 this week?

Big news is expected to come out of the Big XII this week, with something perhaps as early as today...

From ESPN: BYU, Houston, UCF and Cincinnati are planning to submit applications next week to join the Big 12, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday.

The schools could be approved for admission as early as a Sept. 10 meeting of Big 12 presidents, according to Sports Illustrated, which first reported the story...
American Athletic Conference bylaws require schools to give a 27-month notice before they leave and pay a $10 million buyout fee. In that scenario, joining by the 2023 season would be a long shot, but an earlier exit and higher buyout could be negotiated. The most realistic timeline, sources said, is 2024.
Sources in the American told ESPN that Houston, UCF and Cincinnati haven't officially informed the conference of their intent to leave...

Overreactions - 2021 Week 1 (RX; HM)

Overreactions - 2021 Week 1

The first week isn't even over yet (FSU hosts Notre Dame tonight; Louisville plays Ole Miss in Atlanta Monday night), but already I feel like there are some kneejerk reactions we can dare to make...

1. There's a chance the ACC will miss the playoffs for the first time this year. Clemson is no longer a sure thing* after losing its biggest non-conference game (and to a team poised to take their spot, too!). UNC didn't look playoff-worthy, and neither did Miami. Could a team emerge from among BC, Pitt, NC State, or Virginia Tech? Possibly, but I wouldn't hold my breath - all of those teams have flaws, and none of them have the "blue chip ratio" so characteristic of champions.
2. Things are not working out for Geoff Collins at Georgia Tech. We all knew the transition from triple-option to a more standard offense would take time, but (a) most of the Yellow Jacket's roster is now composed of Collins' recuits, and (b) they're losing to less-talented teams far too often to be a fluke. With the loss to NIU, the Jackets could be looking at a 2-10 season. If so, they'll probably be looking at a new head coach next year, too.

They’re buying a quirky Syracuse mansion for $25K. They want to spend nearly $2M to fix it up (photos) (PS; $; Moriarty)

Growing up in Syracuse’s Strathmore neighborhood, Chris LaBerge couldn’t help but notice a grand old mansion that had fallen on hard times on West Onondaga Street.

In its disrepair, it was still striking. It had a three-story turret and exterior wood shingles in patterns — designs resembling fish scales and waves. Bands at the second floor of the turret contained wood carvings of floral or leaf flourishes.

“My parents worked downtown and so, growing up, I went by it a million times and always saw it and thought that it could be something really special,” said LaBerge, 33, a commercial real estate project manager in Denver.

Now, years later, he’s going to get the chance to do that.

LaBerge and local contractor and developer Luke Esposito have agreed to buy the 129-year-old home for $25,000 from the Greater Syracuse Land Bank.

They plan to redevelop it into a mixed-use building, at an estimated cost of nearly $2 million, while maintaining its historical character.
