National-Milk-Day-380x214.jpg

Welcome to National Milk Day!

Not to be confused with World Milk Day on June 1, National Milk Day falls on January 11 to observe the very first time milk was delivered to homes inside sterilized glass bottles. It took until 1878 before anybody thought to fill bottles with milk and seal them with waxed paper. Before that, conditions for storing milk (let alone delivering it) were unsanitary at best and downright hazardous at worst. But now that we have the technology to pasteurize and deliver fresh milk to homes, stores, and processing facilities across the country, this most basic type of dairy is more accessible than ever before. By today’s standards, milk with its nine essential nutrients is considered a staple food, technically able to support human life without the addition of any other food groups to balance it out. (Other life-supporting foods include sourdough bread, chicken eggs, red beans, and surprisingly, beer!) Of course, most of us aren’t on a milk-only diet, but milk is our very first food as babies and often remains a common source of nutrition throughout our adult lives. For National Milk Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating the oldest and arguably the most natural food for all the mammals of the world — milk.

Why New Mexico State RB transfer Juwaun Price picked Syracuse despite return of All-American Sean Tucker (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers was blunt about Sean Tucker's effect on the team's running back room in an ESPN Radio Syracuse spot last week. The All-American was so good that his primary backups entered the transfer portal.

Jarveon Howard left the program before the midway point of the season while Cooper Lutz followed suit shortly after the 2021 campaign wrapped up. With Abdul Adams having exhausted his eligibility, the Orange was left with just three scholarship backs projected for 2022 -- Tucker being the only one to have taken a collegiate snap.

So running backs coach Mike Lynch was tasked with landing an experienced contributor out of the transfer portal to compete for the backup job with returning freshman Josh Hough, who missed all of his true freshman season due to a knee injury, and three-star signee LeQuint Allen, who was named the Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year. And Lynch found Juwaun Price.

4 football players with Syracuse ties headed to NFL playoffs (SU, CNY in NFL) (PS; Herbert)

Four football players with Syracuse ties are headed to the NFL playoffs.

Former Syracuse University linebacker Chandler Jones and offensive lineman Justin Pugh will suit up for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Wild Card round against the Los Angeles Rams next Monday, Jan. 17. The Cardinals finished the season 11-6 after a strong 7-0 start, lining up a game against their divisional rival.

Fellow Orange alumnus Sterling Hofrichter is the backup punter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who won the NFC South with a 13-4 record and will host the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs’ wild card round. Hofrichter, released by the Altanta Falcons this past year, started the previous two weeks but Bradley Pinion returned from a hip injury and the Covid list to resume punting duties for the Bucs Sunday.

And Syracuse native Derrick Gore, a former Nottingham High School football player who played at the University of Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe, earned playing time with the Kansas City Chiefs when fellow running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire suffered injuries this season. The Chiefs won the AFC North with a 12-5 record and will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in a playoff matchup Sunday.

Here’s how former Syracuse and Central NY stars did in the NFL this week:

Chandler Jones, LB, Arizona Cardinals

Former Syracuse linebacker Chandler Jones, who’s been selected for his fourth Pro Bowl, recorded two tackles and a sack as the Cardinals finished the regular season 11-6, earning a playoff berth.

Last game: Seahawks 38, Cardinals 30
Next game: Cardinals at Rams, Monday Jan. 17 at 8:15 p.m.

Justin Pugh, LG, Arizona Cardinals

Ex-Syracuse University guard Justin Pugh looked playoff-ready, playing 100% of snaps on the offensive line.

Last game: Seahawks 38, Cardinals 30
Next game: Cardinals at Rams, Monday Jan. 17 at 8:15 p.m.

Derrick Gore, RB, Kansas City Chiefs

Former Nottingham High School football player Derrick Gore had seven carries for 30 yards.

Last game: Chiefs 28, Broncos 24
Next game: Steelers at Chiefs, Sunday 8:15 p.m.

Tully's Tenders w/ Honey Mustard Sauce

Syracuse Orange: What CNY food item needs to be sold at the Dome? (itlh; Fiello)

Syracuse, N.Y., is the home of the Carrier Dome, which hosts various Syracuse Orange sports and other events. Syracuse and the Central New York region are also the home of some great local food. When people visit Syracuse, many want a taste of the area. Many locals have certain foods they love that enhance their experience.

Now picture this: you are sitting in the Dome watching Syracuse basketball or Syracuse football playing, and you are hungry.

Recently, I ran a poll on Twitter to see what local food item people would most like to see added to the Dome concessions options. Twitter limits poll options to four choices, so I chose Tully’s Tenders, salt potatoes, riggies, and spiedies. The results are below but it looks like CNY does love the best tenders on Earth.

What CNY food would be ideal to add to Carrier Dome concessions?
— Chuck (@OrangeChuck) January 7, 2022

I hear people discuss the food and drinks options all the time. I myself love a cold Mountain Dew, a Dome Dog and/or occasionally a sausage, and I used to also love nachos when they had them in a souvenir container.

But I do sometimes wonder about not only what other local foods I would buy if I saw them available at the Dome, but also what a great opportunity it would be to help a local business. I do love all the foods mentioned and often wondered especially with Tully’s Tenders why you can get them at the fair but not the Dome. Riggies might be the most complicated of them all, salt potatoes would be amazing especially if they were similar to the Loaded Salts at Bull and Bear, and spiedies actually sound like a fun one that would be easy to prepare and consume.

So as I posted this poll on Twitter and not only asked for votes but feedback. So here are a few of the tweet responses I received in response as promised if I did this post. By the way, I am fairly certain that 183 votes might also be the most responses I have received in a poll posted on social media as well so thank you to all who participated.

Riggies would be unbelievable but there's only one true answer: Those sweet, sweet, handheld tendies.

TULLY’S
— Caroline Darney (@cwdarney) January 7, 2022

Tullys seems like the logical answer, but damn Lupos chicken spiedies are EVERYTHING. This is tough!
— Patsy (@LynniePD) January 8, 2022

Spiedies
— Matt sherman (@Matt_Sherman52) January 7, 2022

And there were even a couple of write-in votes as well that would be worthy of mentioning and adding as well.

BREAKING: No CFP Expansion Today (RX; HM)

BREAKING: No CFP Expansion Today

From CBS Sports' "College Football Playoff expansion delayed as officials fail to form consensus over numerous issues" by Dennis Dodd:
While the CFP Management Committee (conference commissioners) did make a recommendation Monday to the managers (school presidents) on how to move forward with a 12-team expansion, the committee's proposal was not unanimous, and the managers failed to form a consensus as a means of moving forward.
...it appears more likely the playoff will not expand until its current 12-year television contract with ESPN ends ahead of the 2026 season.

It's sad to see adults unable to reach a mutually-beneficial agreement because of petty differences, but that's what our world has devolved into, I guess.

More on 2022 CFP Expansion Talks

From ESPN: College Football Playoff leaders fail to agree about expanding field, will meet again to discuss in coming weeks

The leaders of the College Football Playoff again failed to come to an agreement about expanding the current four-team field, but they didn't entirely rule out the possibility it could still happen before the end of the current 12-year contract, which runs through the 2025 season.
It was reported that the commissioners have considered six models, which are roughly...
  • Top 12 teams
  • Top 6 highest-ranked conference champions plus 6 at-large bids
  • AQs for the P5 conferences plus the top G5 champion, plus 6 at-large bids (aka "5+1+6");
  • Top 8 teams;
  • Top 6 conference champions plus 2 at-large bids ("6+2")
  • AQs for the P5 champs and the top G5 champ, plus 2 at-large bids ("5+1+2").

Syracuse bets on a tech winner to conquer 5G and transform a forgotten neighborhood (PS; $; Moriarty)

JMA Wireless founder and CEO John Mezzalingua says his company is on the cusp of transforming the behind-the-scenes technology that’s a key part of making smartphones work.

To move the company forward on that front, he’s building Syracuse’s first major factory in decades in one of city’s poorest, most neglected neighborhoods.

JMA’s 5G components factory is scheduled to open on Tallman Street on Syracuse’s South Side the week of Feb. 28. The $25 million facility will employ 200 people in a section of the city where jobs are hard to come by.

But Mezzalingua said that’s just the start of the company’s expansion on the South Side. More buildings and jobs are planned as the company turns the site into a “5G campus” over the coming years, he said.

“This will be the only U.S.-owned 5G manufacturing facility in the country, and we are thrilled that we can do this right here in Syracuse,” he said after giving a tour of the new building to The Post-Standard | syracuse.com. “This is so exciting for JMA, it’s exciting for the city of Syracuse and there’s a lot of excitement in the wireless industry in general.”

The surrounding South Side neighborhood is plagued with boarded-up storefronts and homes, save for the pockets that community housing groups and residents have worked to improve. The three-story former Sears store, closed since 1974, sits empty a block away.

The JMA news sounds very good. Hopefully they can recruit enough talent.
