Welcome to Scotch Tape Day!

In the early 1920s, Richard Gurley Drew worked at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, now known as 3M, which at the time made sandpaper. Drew delivered sandpaper samples to auto body shops, and saw the frustration that car painters had when painting two-tone color cars. Surgical adhesive tape, library pastes, and homemade glues were used to hold newspapers on cars when painting, and as the papers were removed, sticking residues often remained, that ripped off some of the paint when they were peeled off.

Drew invented masking tape, and created it with crêpe paper, cabinetmaker's glue, and glycerin. It adhered well to cars when painting, and also came off easily afterwards without taking paint away. It was marketed as Scotch Masking Tape in 1925. The name "Scotch" stems from an ethnic stereotype that said Scottish people were stingy. Some stories claim that the tape didn't adhere well at first, or didn't have adhesive in the middle of it. The stories purport that Drew was told to go back to his "Scotch" bosses and to tell them to add more adhesive, or that they asked him why he was being so "Scotch" with the adhesive. It is unclear if Drew actually had these conversations, but nonetheless, the name stuck, as did the final version of the tape.

Isaiah Johnson Talks Syracuse Visit, Has Decision Date Set (SI; McAllister)

Dartmouth transfer Isaiah Johnson is one of the top cornerbacks in the portal. The 6-3 defensive back was offered by Syracuse shortly after entering the portal. Syracuse was also the first school to contact him. Johnson spent the weekend on the Syracuse campus for an official visit to get a closer look at the program.

"It was great," Johnson said. "It was a great experience. It's been four years since the last time I took a visit. So it was really funny and different to get a chance to go through that experience again. Four years older, four years of maturity. You were looking at a lot of different things and they respected the fact that I'm an older guy. Took away a lot of the fluff and the show, and got to see what was important. I got to see the campus, got to see how it would be being a student, the living situation. And obviously heavily focused on the football facilities.

"For me, it was seeing what's the culture like, who are the people, and if it was a place I could really grow as a person. The mindset that coach Babers is setting up at Syracuse, yeah they've had their ups and downs, but it felt like he has that foundation in place where a few acquisitions, a few people coming in, a few movements and Syracuse could be something special. That's what they were trying to show me and I think they did a really good job. I had a good time and I got a really good vibe from the place."

FSU football heads into the third year of the Mike Norvell era with an 8-13 record over the first two seasons. I think it’s safe to say the 2022 season will prove pivotal for program direction.

The Noles made a two-win improvement from 2020 to 2021, but injuries and lack of depth proved costly in a few games.

The program is in a better position from a cultural standpoint, and Norvell has done a solid job of plugging in some major holes on the roster and building some depth.

The team awaits the official start of spring practice, but the ACC releasing the conference schedule will provide better insight into what’s possible for a program hungry to get back to respectability.

2022 @ACCFootball Schedule Reveal
January 31 | 7 PM ET | ACCN pic.twitter.com/OvapcrJbV3
— ACC Network (@accnetwork) January 25, 2022

FSU has not done themselves any favors with tough schedules in the past few years, including tough out-of-conference games in season openers. The Noles haven’t had a winning September since 2016. However, that could change depending on when certain games fall on the schedule. Four dates for FSU football are already known:

  • Dusquesne-August 27th (H)
  • LSU-September 4th (N)
  • Louisiana-November 19th (H)
  • Florida-November 26th (H)
FSU should be favored in two of those games and have a shot at winning the other two. That makes the order of the conference games incredibly important.

Need Early Wins

The good news is all eight conference games appear winnable. What I mean is in the past few years, you could circle one or two games as definitive losses before the conference released the schedule. There’s no question the Noles will be betting underdogs in a few games, but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they won those games. These are the games I expect FSU to be betting favorites:
  • Syracuse (A)
  • Georgia Tech (H)
  • Boston College (H)
It would be great if the Noles could get one or two of these games early in the schedule. I’m a firm believer in early wins producing confidence and momentum.

Tyler Van Dyke named top five returning college football quarterback (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Tyler Van Dyke was named the fifth best returning quarterback in college football in 2022 by 247 Sports. Van Dyke had a breakout season for Miami in 2021. Van Dyke is one of three ACC QBs on the list. Brennan Armstrong of Virginia is ranked seventh and Sam Hartman of Wake Forest is one spot ahead of Van Dyke in fourth.

Armstrong led the ACC in passing in 2021 averaging 404.5 yards per game, Hartman was second averaging 332.2 YPG and Van Dyke was fourth at 293.1. ACC Player of the Year Kenny Pickett who completed his eligibility finished second at 332.2 YPG. Miami lost to Virginia, beat Pittsburgh and did not play Wake Forest in 2021.

Miami will play at Virginia in 2022 and host Pittsburgh. The Hurricanes do not play Wake Forest unless both teams make the ACC Championship game. Van Dyke returning could make Miami the favorite to win the ACC Coastal. Miami and Virginia both have new coaches entering the 2022 season.

Miami hired Mario Cristobal from Oregon. Virginia hired former Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott to replace Bronco Mendenhall. Miami will likely compete with North Carolina as the 2022 preseason favorite. Van Dyke won the 2021 ACC Offensive Freshman of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

Virginia Tech football: It’s a big week for several draft-eligible Hokies (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

The 2022 NFL draft is still three months away, but the road to the draft opens this week. The Reese’s Senior Bowl and the East-West Shrine Bowl will hold practices this week, leading up to games on Thursday (East-West Shrine Bowl) and Saturday (Senior Bowl).

Both games will feature multiple former Virginia Tech stars. The Senior Bowl, held in Mobile, Alabama, is considered the premier showcase game for draft-eligible players. However, the game isn’t nearly as important as the week of practice in front of NFL coaches and scouts. Every NFL team is represented with the Jets and Lions’ coaching staffs on the sidelines this year.

The Hokies will have three players in the Senior Bowl. Wide receiver Tre Turner, guard Lecitus Smith and defensive end Amare Barno will all play for the American Team, coached by the Detroit Lions.

All three players will be drafted with Smith having a chance to contribute as a rookie in 2022.

As for the East-West Shrine Game, the Hokies will also have three players participating. Center/guard Brock Hoffman, offensive tackle Luke Tenuta and cornerback Jermaine Waller will all play for the East team.

The East-West Shrine Bowl will be played on Thursday, Feb. 3. The Reese’s Senior Bowl is set for Saturday, Feb. 5. The games usually take place on different weeks, giving a player in the East-West game an opportunity to be “called up” to participate in the Senior Bowl if injuries occur.

Hoffman, Tenuta and Waller should all be drafted. It should be a good year for the Hokies in the NFL draft.

We wish nothing but the best to each of these Hokies as they prepare to fulfill their lifelong dreams.

New EIU football coach has former teammates 'thrilled that he's back' (chicagonow.com; Verdun)

When the news broke Jan. 11 that Eastern Illinois was suddenly without a head coach, alumni across the nation felt the sting and wondered aloud if the Panthers had indeed hit rock bottom.

“We weren’t feeling great, for sure,” said EIU’s all-time leader tackler Tim Carver, who resides in Iowa.

For on that wintry Tuesday, Adam Cushing announced he was leaving EIU after three seasons to take a job as offensive line coach at Duke University. Moreover, this came on the tails of three straight one-win seasons.

EIU officials — led by president David Glassman and athletic director Tom Michael — moved quickly and found their man in former Panther defensive lineman Chris Wilkerson, who began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater under Eastern legend Bob Spoo.

Wilkerson, who spent seven seasons on the Panther staff, compiled a 51-27 record in nine seasons as the University of Chicago head coach. He previously was an assistant coach at Dartmouth and San Jose State.

Wilkerson’s former teammates and contemporaries alike are delighted with EIU’s choice.

“Our moods completely flipped,” Carver said. “Chris was an integral part of what Coach Spoo built and we’re thrilled that he’s back.”

Ray D’Alessio was a senior when Wilkerson came to Eastern as a freshman in 1990.

“You could just see right away that Chris was a competitor; he was feisty. There were a lot of guys in front of him (on the depth chart) that were seasoned veterans and he was out there every day competing,” D’Alessio said.

D’Alessio, who has enjoyed a successful career in the media including time as a CNN sports anchor and correspondent since graduating from EIU, has remained friends with Wilkerson over the years.

“Chris just pours out passion,” D’Alessio said from his Georgia home. “That’s the thing you’ll hear over and over. Chris has that passion.”

Wilkerson is the first Eastern Illinois graduate to be hired as the school’s head coach.

Flashback to Friday

Ten of Wilkerson’s former EIU teammates from the early 1990s found their way back to Charleston for Friday’s introductory address held in the Baker Warmoth Hall of Champions in Lantz Arena.

“We were all in shock two weeks ago; now we’re energized. The excitement level is off the charts right now,” said Brad Fichtel, who flew in from Texas to be there for his former teammate.

Fitchel, a member of the EIU Hall of Fame who spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, has even more reason to celebrate. His son Carson signed a letter of intent to play for the Panthers in December.

“It makes me feel better. I have no problems or worries sending my son over 1,000 miles from Texas to play for Coach Wilkerson. I’ve got the head coach’s phone number if I ever need to get on my kid,” Fichtel said with chuckle.

Spoo’s legacy

To a man, the former Panthers see Wilkerson as an extension of Spoo, their mentor and to many, father figure.

In fact, the last time most of the former players saw one another in person was at the memorial service and funeral of Spoo, who passed away in 2018.

“You can just picture him (Spoo) with that big grin on his face and that deep voice saying, ‘You’re going to do a great job!’ (to Chris),” Carver said.

Carver exchanged texts with Spoo’s daughter Katie when word broke about Wilkerson’s hiring.

Fichtel said, “It all goes back to Coach Spoo. He brought us in as a group and we were all close. We’re still connected today. We’ve got a 20-person text message group of former players. We still talk. We’re all excited about Chris (being hired). He’s going to unite us again with his love for Eastern Illinois.”

Roy Wittke spent 19 seasons at EIU, 17 as the offensive coordinator in two separate stints under Spoo. Today, he is the director of player personnel at Syracuse under head coach Dino Babers, another Spoo disciple who coached EIU for two successful seasons after Spoo retired.

“I am thrilled to learn of Chris Wilkerson being hired as head football coach at Eastern Illinois University,” Wittke said in a statement. “There is not anyone who has more invested in Panther football than Chris — having been a player; graduate assistant; full-time assistant; and defensive coordinator for the Panthers, Chris not only has an unparalleled knowledge of what it takes to be successful at EIU, his love and loyalty for Eastern athletics is real and authentic.

Alabama hiring new O-line coach to replace Doug Marrone (al.com; Rodak)

Alabama is hiring Eric Wolford as offensive line coach, ESPN reported early Monday morning, to replace Doug Marrone after season.

247 Sports reported Sunday that Alabama was targeting Wolford. ESPN’s report stated Marrone is expected to return to the NFL, although he has yet to be publicly connected to any job openings in that league.

Wolford, 50, spent last season as Kentucky’s offensive line coach. The Wildcats finished fifth in the SEC with 199 rushing yards per game.

2022 National Signing Day Preview (RX; HM)

2022 National Signing Day Preview

CFB National Signing Day: Wednesday, Feb. 2

Which players are expected to sign with ACC teams? Which ones could still be "flipped" at the last minute? Many ACC teams are done for the cycle, but there are a few who will be active on National Signing Day 2022...
Clemson is expected to sign five 3-star players: Myles Oliver (CB), Kylon Griffin (S), Kobe McCloud (LB), Cole Turner (WR), and Jahiem Lawson (DL).
Florida State has one hard commit: 3-star IOL Antavious Woody.
Virginia Tech has a couple of 3-star players ready to sign: Daequan Wright (TE) and Xavier Chaplin (OT).
Georgia Tech expects to sign one 4-star player, Janiran Bonner (WR), along with three more 3-star players: Jullian Lewis (WR), Greg Delaine (CB), and Bobby Mooney (OT).
UVa has six hard commits it would like to sign, all 3-stars: Tapuvae Amaama (IOL), McKale Boley (OT), Terrell Jones (DL), Houston Curry (OT), Noah DeMeritt (IOL), and Dawson Alters (IOL). BTW, that's a whole offensive line!
__________
There are still some players who haven't announced their commitment yet. One of them is 4-star DL Caden Story, who is predicted to choose Clemson. Another player, 3-star RB Andrew Paul, is thought to be leaning to the Tigers.

This escape pod from Jabbrrbox provides a private space for travelers at Syracuse Hancock International Airport to make phone calls, jump on Zoom calls or just grab some quiet time. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

Syracuse airport now has escape pods. What the heck are those? (PS; $; Moriarty)

Syracuse Hancock International Airport has a new option for travelers looking for some peace and quiet and are willing to pay for it -- escape pods.

Despite the name, the pods won’t take you anywhere. They are booths -- 4 feet long, 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall -- that provide travelers with private space to jump on a Zoom call or just enjoy some quiet time in the middle of a busy airport.

Two of the pods were placed at Hancock Airport -- one each in terminals A and B -- in December and became fully operational at the beginning of January. Two more will be installed at the airport by the end of May.

Each booth has a seat, a small desk to place a laptop on, USB charging and an LCD screen that lets you call up your flight information, control the lights and temperature inside the pod. You can even take a photo of yourself similar to an old photo booth.

The booths have a frosted window that lets in light while maintaining privacy. Soundproofing blocks out nearly all outside noise.

There’s no room to lie down, so the pods are not a place to catch a nap (though you could rest your head on the desk if you wanted to).
