Welcome to Fat Thursday!

Taking place on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent, Fat Thursday is a Christian feast that is primarily celebrated in European countries. It is similar to Fat Tuesday, which is celebrated the following week, but in many European countries, it is the more important holiday of the two. It also is associated with Carnival. As much fasting is done during Lent, Fat Thursday is a day for getting together and eating sweets and other foods that are eschewed during that season. Commonly eaten foods include pączki, berliners, and angel wings.

The holiday is given different names in various European countries, where distinct foods are associated with the day. The day appears to be most widely celebrated in Poland, where it is known as Tłusty Czwartek. Pastries and doughnuts from bakeries are eaten, especially pączki. The tradition of eating doughnuts on the day began in the seventeenth century. In parts of Germany, it is known as Weiberfastnacht. People wear costumes, and celebrations in the streets and in pubs begin at 11:11 a.m. It is known as the "women's carnival" and there is a tradition of women "taking over" town halls. In some parts of Germany, the holiday is also known as Fetter Donnerstag.

Syracuse football scholarship update: How much space is left on 2022 roster going into spring ball? (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

An offseason like no other requires a shift in perspective. At this time in the college football calendar, traditionally, 2022 rosters are all but set. Perhaps a summer transfer could come in and make an early impact. But the team taking the field in the spring, freshmen excluded, is the one that would be leaned on come fall.

With the arrival of the transfer portal, however, the uptick in player movement this summer projects to be exponential. Coaching staffs nationwide continue to recruit experienced targets as well as monitor the players in their own locker rooms.

A wave of players entering the transfer portal after spring ball is likely coming. So having the flexibility to pursue a potential impact player is important.

With that in mind, let's take a look at where Syracuse football's scholarship table stands a couple of weeks from the start of spring practice. After a position-by-position breakdown, we'll go over the program's remaining spots in the context of the NCAA's transfer eligibility relief rule, which SU's compliance department has clarified via a team spokesperson.

Syracuse 2022 Spring Football Preview: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends (TNIAAM; Brown)

We’re onto our third Syracuse Orange spring football position preview. If you missed the quarterbacks and running backs, you can go back before you read on for our preview of the wide receivers and tight ends.

Who left?

Taj Harris didn’t even make it through the 2021 season after it was announced back in October that he had entered the transfer portal. He originally committed to the University of Kentucky in November, but decommitted and is now gearing up for a season with Rutgers.

Harris is in the top 10 for Syracuse’s career receptions and receiving yards charts and in normal years would have been the biggest WR loss going into the upcoming season but his early departure allowed Syracuse to learn to play without him.

Syracuse football will close out 2022 slate at long-time rival Boston College (itlh; Fiello)

Before the Syracuse football 2022 schedule was released, I said that despite the tough teams on the schedule, I thought this team could still have success and be a bowl team based on what I have seen so far this offseason. And when the schedule came out, it does appear difficult but I still stand by it.

So I sat down and decided that instead of just saying that I believe it again, I wanted to break the games down one by one and give you the information you need to decide for yourself. I will go game by game with fun stats like head-to-head outcomes, players to watch, my way too early rating of difficulty, and a few other notes that might help.

Here are the teams scheduled and links to those that are already published in case you missed one:

Louisville
UConn
Purdue
Virginia
Wagner
Bye Week
NC State
Clemson
Notre Dame
Pittsburgh
Florida State
Wake Forest
Boston College

Let’s take a closer look at the Syracuse football game at Boston College.

Syracuse Orange vs Boston College Eagles

Saturday, November 26, 2022 (time and viewing options TBD)

Location: Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts

Last season head to head
: Syracuse football beat BC at home 21-6. And it looks like according to my trusty source Winsipedia, Syracuse has triumphed 32 times when these two teams have played while Boston College has won 22 times.

Opponent’s overall record last season: BC finished 6-6 last season but tied with Syracuse for last place in the ACC Atlantic Division with a 2-6 record. They were scheduled to play in the Military Bowl against East Carolina but the game was canceled.

Stats from their last face-off: Sean Tucker went beast mode and had 207 yards rushing on 26 carries with a touchdown. Kingsley Jonathan had 3 sacks for the Orange but since he’s out of eligibility, maybe Stefon Thompson will step up since he had 1.5 sacks himself. Courtney Jackson was filling in for an injured Trebor Peña on punt and kick returns for the game and actually returned a punt for a touchdown.

Possible level of difficulty on a scale of 1-10: 5. Syracuse football won decisively last season but they were at home and BC star QB Phil Jurkovec was out injured. This is the first time Syracuse has played at BC in a few years so I expect this will be a fight. Something screams inside me that BC will be looking for revenge in this one too and will come into this game determined. This could also be important for both teams in regards to bowl game status.

Key person on the opposing team: QB Phil Jurkovec. I feel like I chose a lot of quarterbacks during this breakdown but with Jurkovec announcing his return for the 2022 season, he has to be the one to watch if healthy. If he is healthy, this will not be an easy task for the Orange to go to Chesnut Hill and pull out a win.

How can Syracuse win: The last time these teams played, BC struggled to find the right QB in Jurkovec’s place. This time it’ll likely be different so Syracuse is going to have to try to score more than 21 against them. Sean Tucker did have over 200 yards rushing last time but I don’t think it’s fair to automatically assume he will again. The passing game however only resulted in 65 total yards and that will have to improve as I’m sure BC will prepare heavily for Tucker this time around.

While Goodrich was proud of his teammates for what they’ve done in the community so far, he made it clear that the Athletes for Community Engagement program is not done serving those around them and setting a clear message for others.

17 local football players awarded as ‘Unsung Hero’ for service, volunteering (DO; Perrins)

The Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central’s high school varsity football team started their season with a string of losses but eventually became the first team in the school’s history to win a playoff game.

After losing their final playoff game in the 2021 season right before the championship, though, the players were in doubt about what to do next. The loss meant the students’ time as a team could be over.

Isaiah Goodrich disagreed. A high school junior who plays multiple positions on the team, Goodrich thought the team should turn to service.

Goodrich, a co-captain on the team, has been attending Abundant Life Christian Center, a church in Cicero since he was 5 years old. After the loss, he brought his team together to volunteer at the church’s Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway — the beginning of a journey of service for the young men.
The group of 17 varsity football players received one of Syracuse University’s 2022 Unsung Hero awards, which honor community members who make positive impacts on the lives of others but are not widely recognized for their contributions.

“We basically just wanted to go in the community and help the people who came to our games and supported us on the sidelines,” Goodrich said. “I thought this would be a way to bring us all back together — doing something positive that’ll put a smile on people’s faces while also having a good time with each other.”

Rejection of 12-team football playoff gives SEC incentive to go lone wolf | Opinion (usatoday.com; Toppmeyer)

The SEC might not support expanding the College Football Playoff to 12 teams by the time the current contract expires, because the SEC by then might have little use for a 12-team playoff. At least, not a 12-team playoff that invites members of the Pac-12, ACC, Big 12 and other leagues.

For months, the SEC expressed willingness to grow the playoff, as long as expansion produced a 12-team format.

The 12-team plan never received unanimous support from the other conferences, though, a requirement if the current contract was to be amended before expiring at the end of the 2025 season. The ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 – three conferences that call themselves the Alliance — voted against the 12-team format, according to multiple reports. The CFP committee announced Friday that no expansion would occur until at least 2026.

What if the SEC is no longer interested in a collaborative playoff?

The SEC doesn’t need support from other conferences for a playoff that doesn’t include other conferences.

Surely, the Alliance isn’t naïve enough to think Oklahoma and Texas are the only universities that covet SEC membership. If the SEC desires, it could raid the most desirable members from other conferences until they’re left with scraps, then stage its own playoff.

Sorry, Pac-12. You're out. Adios, ACC. Have fun with basketball.

If the SEC still desires some companionship, it could invite the Big Ten to join its playoff. Football-fueled media rights deals drive college sports, and the SEC and Big Ten are the most attractive conferences to television networks, because they generate the most eyeballs.

Springing around the ACC: Wake Forest (theclemsoninsider.com; Potter)

Clemson will begin spring practice March 2, but the Tigers aren’t the only ones in the ACC taking the field over the next couple of months.

With early preparations for the 2022 season on the horizon for teams throughout the conference, The Clemson Insider is going around the league to take a look at where other teams stand going into the spring starting with the eight teams on the Tigers’ schedule. Next up is Wake Forest.

Head coach: Dave Clawson (ninth year)

2021 record: 11-3, 7-1 ACC

Key personnel losses: RB Christian Beal-Smith, WR Jaquarii Roberson, OT Zach Tom, DE Luiji Vilain, LB Luke Masterson, DB Ja’Sir Taylor, K Nick Sciba

Key returners/additions: QB Sam Hartman, RB Justice Ellison, WR A.T. Perry, WR Taylor Morin, DE Rondell Bothroyd, DB Caelen Carson, DL Kobie Turner

Spring gleaning: Wake isn’t returning every starter like it did last season, but the Demon Deacons have a solid foundation in place as they try to defend their Atlantic Division title. Hartman is back after being one of the nation’s most prolific passers a season ago while Perry, at 6-foot-5, was on the receiving end of 15 touchdown passes, making up one of the ACC’s top QB-WR tandems. Defensively, Bothroyd is returning after finishing second on the team in sacks a season ago, but there are some questions the Demon Deacons have to start trying to answer this spring.

Their leading rusher (Beal-Smith), leading tackler (Masterson) and second-leading receiver (Roberson) have all moved on. Tom and Sciba, both first-team all-ACC performers last season, are also headed to the NFL, leaving plenty of important starting jobs up for grabs. And after yielding the third-most rushing yards in the conference last season, the middle of the Demon Deacons’ defense needs improving, which is where Wake is hoping Turner can help. A 6-3, 290-pound defensive tackle, Turner was a three-time FCS All-American at Richmond before transferring. Wake will host Clemson on Sept. 24

Spring game: April 16 at Truist Field

Pitt Football Continues to Look for Quarterback in Class of 2023 - 14NOOOR (14nooor.net; Admin)

As Pitt found out firsthand last season, having an elite quarterback is a gamechanger and can turn your program from being a good one into a great one.

Behind the leadership of Kenny Pickett, Pitt enjoyed an 11-win season, won their first ACC Football Championship and played in a major bowl game for the first time since 2004.

The Panthers were fortunate enough to land one of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal in USC’s Kedon Slovis, so his presence along with the abundance of talent on the returning roster puts Pitt in a legitimate position to once again contend for another ACC Coastal Division Championship .

Tracking the quarterback position has been interesting this off-season in terms of players that have received Pitt offers. Pat Narduzzi and Frank Cignetti Jr. have already extended offers to 16 junior quarterbacks, many of whom are highly rated and are getting heavily recruited. If 16 seems like a large number, it is. In fact, it’s the most offers to quarterbacks that we can track when going through yearly offers from the Pitt program.

The latest one came Tuesday night as Cignetti offered 3-star Kenny Minchey from Hendersonville, Tennessee. It’s interesting, Pitt has now offered three junior quarterbacks from Tennessee, which is likely a by-product of Pitt new assistant quarterbacks coach Jonathan DiBiaso, who has roots to that area.

Here are the 16 quarterbacks in the Class of 2023 with offers from Pitt:

Dante Moore: 5-star from Detroit, Michigan.

Nico Iamaleava: 5-star from Downey, California.

Christopher Vizzina: 4-star from Birmingham, Alabama. (Recent offer).

Is Miami the next Clemson? (RX; HM)

Is Miami the next Clemson?

Clemson climbed to the top of the college football world by having a great coaching staff full of great recruiters. The "U" has been in the news a lot lately with some big time coaching hires, but is the hype legitimate? That's what we'll examine in this post...

First, the Hurricanes got their head coach, Mario Cristobal.
Next, they got their defensive coordinator, Kevin Steele.
Finally, the Canes grabbed the best offensive coordinator they could find, Josh Gattis.
From ESPN: Miami hires Josh Gattis away from Michigan to be football team's new offensive coordinator

Gattis plus Steele gives Miami a very strong coordinator pair. What's more, all three coaches - Cristobal, Steele, and Gattis - have coached at least one season under Nick Saban,

How Chittenango volunteer firefighter found the Treasure Hunt medallion in 10 minutes (PS; McClendon)

Brian Schermerhorn II said he only spent about 10 minutes searching trees along the Onondaga Creekwalk in Syracuse before he found the Treasure Hunt medallion Wednesday afternoon.

“I just got very lucky,” he said. “This was the first day I searched for it.”

He mostly credited his stepmother, Sherri Long, and his father, Brian Schermerhorn Sr., who spent hours trying to crack the daily clues in the contest organized each year by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. He said about five other family members also helped solve the clues.

“They did a lot of the back work,” Schermerhorn II said. “I was kind of just the guy with the eyes that found it.”

Once Long figured out Wednesday’s clue — which referenced a SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry garden — she texted her stepson, “I know where it is.”

The 19-year-old volunteer firefighter from Chittenango jumped into his SUV and drove to the section of the Creekwalk near the Inner Harbor.

After walking about a quarter of a mile down the path that runs parallel with Onondaga Creek, he found the medallion in a grouping of trees just off the trail.
