Welcome to National Ranch Day!

Hidden Valley claims to have created the first Ranch back in 1954, on its dude ranch in the mountains outside of Santa Barbara – pretty idyllic for the birth of the one true dressing. Legend has it that plumber-turned-cowboy Hidden Valley rancher Steve Henson first established the ranch and cooked for his guests, covering his meals with a tantalizing mix of buttermilk and herbs.

Steve began to package his dressing and send it off with guests, but the demand became unmanageable. Eventually, Ranch hit Southwestern supermarkets and then traversed the nation, forcing the production of the heavenly liquid to be moved to a larger facility in Sparks, Nevada. Gone were the days of the home-style seasoning packets handed out to friends and neighbors to be mixed with buttermilk and mayo.

Post game with St.Johns OL/DL Cam Goode & Caleb Okechukwu after win over DeMatha (youtube; video)

UCF DL transfer Cam Goode sets visit to Syracuse football (247sports.com; Bailey)

UCF defensive line transfer Cam Goode will visit Syracuse football on March 25, he announced on Twitter. A Washington, D.C., native who previously attended Virginia Tech, he has two years left to use two seasons of eligibility.

The 6-foot-2, 315-pound Goode has appeared in 33 games for the Knights over the last three years, starting five contests over the last two campaigns. In 2021, he totaled 24 tackles, including four for loss, three sacks, an interception and a team-best four forced fumbles -- tied for the most in UCF single-season history and good for 12th nationally.

Goode logged 7.5 TFLs in 2020 to go with three sacks after making an impact with five quarterback hurries as a redshirt freshman in 2019. He did not play during his lone season with the Hokies in 2018.

Before starting his college career, Goode was a standout for St. John's College High School, where he was teammates with current SU defensive end Caleb Okechukwu and defensive back Aman Greenwood. He played for Joe Casamento, the longtime coach at nearby Christian Brothers Academy before he moved south to D.C. Coming out of high school,

Goode was rated three stars and the No. 40 defensive tackle in the Class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite. He was originally offered by Syracuse as well as VT, UCF, Arizona, Boston College, Indiana, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Virginia and Wake Forest, among others.

Syracuse, which opened spring practice on Sunday, is working to reload its defensive line after losing five rotation players and the vast majority of its 2021 production during the offseason. McKinley Williams, Cody Roscoe, Kingsley Jonathan and Josh Black all exhausted their eligibility while Curtis Harper transferred to Akron.

Dino Babers is starting the most important year of his tenure at Syracuse. With only one winning season under his belt in six years, there's pressure to get it right again.

Two days into spring camp, things are in high gear and there's been lots of change. “

There’s been some change, which is good," Babers said Monday after practice.

"New ideas out there. Those guys are grabbing it very, very quickly. They’re learning new stuff. I think so far, so good. It’s only the second day out, but they’re going to get better.”

Syracuse was one win shy of securing a bowl game berth last season with three games left on the schedule and lost all three to finish at 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the fourth time in Babers' tenure. That left his Syracuse record at 29-43, 15-35 in the ACC.

The stumble to the finish prompted a revamping of the staff in late December. Babers fired offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert and brought in Robert Anae from Virginia to take his place. Syracuse also hired former Virginia quarterbacks coach Jason Beck after the sudden resignation of head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

ACC Football: Spring 2022 Power Rankings (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

Spring practice has already started or will soon for all 14 teams in the ACC for the 2022 college football season. Although it's tough to get an accurate read on teams from practices in the spring, this is the first set of official workouts and provides some insight into the upcoming year.

Last year's ACC title game provided a surprise matchup between Pittsburgh and Wake Forest, and with all of the teams at the top of the league entering '22 with concerns, another off-the-radar championship is likely. The Demon Deacons have to contend with Clemson and NC State in the Atlantic, with Miami expected to push the Panthers in the Coastal. Florida State should improve in coach Mike Norvell's third year, and Boston College will benefit from a healthy Phil Jurkovec at quarterback. New coaches at Virginia, Virginia Tech and Duke add uncertainty to the always chaotic Coastal Division.

FSU football: Linemen Robert Cooper, Dillan Gibbons, Fabien Lovett talk day three of spring practice (tomahawknation.com; Mire)

The pads came on today and the players were excited and ready for what transpired and what to look forward to for the rest of spring. They talked about coaches, newcomers, improvement, and more.

Defensive lineman Fabien Lovett

Lovett said that the practice went well but he felt the defense could’ve been better:

“It was good. It was smooth. I feel like we started off good on the defensive side but we finished kind of lazy a little bit. Well, I wouldn't say lazy but we just kind of, we didn’t finish on top in my opinion. The offense kind of took advantage of that and they finished on top. It’s all about the competition at the end of the day.”

On what he’s seen from the newcomers so far:

“We got a lot of young guys. We got Bishop (Thomas), we got Daniel (Lyons), we got Aaron Hester, we got Dante (Anderson), we got Byron Turner. Really all the young guys impressed me today honestly like since the first day, all of our young guys impressed me. Like even on the offensive side, like Trey Benson, AJ (Duffy), anybody. But I’ve really be impressed with people across the board,”

On transfer offensive lineman Kayden Lyles:

ESPN's Pete Thamel writes "LSU receives notice of allegations tied to men's basketball, football programs"

LSU has received a notice of allegations related to potential violations in the men's basketball and football programs, a source told ESPN on Tuesday... The notice of allegations stem from multiple cases, including LSU's ties to the federal basketball investigation that became public in 2017... there's allegations in NCAA paperwork that [basketball coach Will] Wade either arranged or offered "impermissible payments" to at least 11 prospects... The basketball portion of this case ties back to the federal basketball investigation, which became public in September of 2017...
LSU has already self-imposed penalties to address potential violations in the football program that are expected to be included in the notice, as the school implemented a bowl ban and scholarship restrictions. LSU projects as a No. 6 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament and opens the SEC tournament on Thursday against the winner of Ole Miss and Missouri.

The Reuben sandwich on dark eye from Touch of Broadway Delicatessen, DeWitt, NY (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gma

Touch of Broadway fills dining kosher-style deli void in Syracuse (Dining In Review) (PS; $; Paventi)

Touch of Broadway in DeWitt isn’t a kosher deli, but no one will fault you for thinking it is. The menu doesn’t do anything to dissuade you from that belief, as it has all the hallmarks of the kosher delis found in the New York metro region: housemade pastrami, corned beef and brisket. Beef tongue, whitefish and knishes. And matzo ball soup.

Matzo ball soup isn’t part of my food heritage, as a third-generation Italian-American kid from Liverpool. It is something I developed a liking for after years of visiting the New York City area. Touch of Broadway starts with a housemade chicken broth, evident by a few grease spots floating at the top. Not too fatty or salty, carrots and broad noodles steeped in the broth to impart flavor and mouthfeel.

At the center of the bowl was a gigantic matzoh ball, which is difficult to explain to someone that has never had one. Imagine a ball of cornmeal without any corn flavor. The ball itself is made from crushed unleavened bread, never losing its shape while floating in the takeout container during my drive home to Camillus.

Since its opening in September 2021, it has gained plenty of attention in Syracuse.com’s Where Syracuse Eats Facebook group as the only kosher-style deli in the region. Though the restaurant has a moderately large dining room, we chose to see how our order would hold up to a 20-minute door-to-door drive from the east side to the west.

You may have noted that I wrote kosher-style above, not kosher. The menu features food common in Jewish cuisine but without the certification, meaning you can get yourself a Reuben and knish without contradicting the Torah’s prohibition on eating meat and dairy together.
