Beware the Ides of March!

The Roman calendar, which dates back to 753 BCE, had three fixed points throughout the month: Nones, Ides, and Kalends. Ides took place around the midpoint of each month, occurring on the 13th or 15th. In March it took place on the 15th.

The Ides of March is most remembered as being the anniversary of the day that Julius Caesar was assassinated, in 44 BCE. The day did, however, have some significance before this infamous event. It had long been a day of religious observances. The Ides of each month was sacred to Jupiter, Rome's supreme deity. Flamen Dialis, Jupiter's high priest, would traditionally lead an "Ides sheep" along the streets of Rome before it was sacrificed. The first part of March consisted of new year's celebrations, as March was the first month of the Roman calendar. The Feast of Anna Perenna, a goddess of the year, was a festival held on the Ides that closed down the new year's celebrations. Celebrants gathered outside of Rome, along the banks of the Tiber River, for food, drink, music, and sacrifices to Anna Perenna for a prosperous new year. The Ides of March was also used by Romans as a deadline for settling debts.

What we learned from the first week of SU football practice (photos) (PS; $; Mink)

All the ways Syracuse must improve in 2022 showed up in the first week of spring practice.

New coaches instructed, and transfers got their first on-field reps, but little more than early impressions could be gleaned from a few non-padded practices last week.

Those paying close attention saw another facet that could help determine whether Syracuse can take another step forward next fall.

A green dot lit up on the left ear of the headsets worn by myriad coaches and staff members during a goal line practice period, a sign the coaches are working on better communication from the sideline to the field in pressure moments.

The Orange’s woes in or just outside the red zone were well-documented. If it wasn’t failed execution in the kicking game, it was poor communication spoiling a potential game-winning, two-point play against Wake Forest or a botched goal line series at the end of the first half at Virginia Tech.

First-year offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck wore them, signaling in plays from the sideline along with reserve quarterback Luke MacPhail.

Graduate assistant Kendall Coleman and offensive analysts Travis Green and Lanear Sampson were among the support staffers who wore them, too.

So did the guy standing on the field a few yards behind the play: Dino Babers.

Garrett Williams Discusses Return to Syracuse, Spring Ball Expectations (SI; McAllister)

The first week of spring football is in the books and there are many new faces as well new numbers in Syracuse.

Going into the 2022 season, three starters have exhausted their eligibility and the 3-3-5 defense will look a little different. There will be plenty of familiarity, however, as players such as Garrett Williams and Mikel Jones decided to come back to Syracuse for another season rather than enter the NFL Draft.

"I feel like we had a lot of unfinished business...and one more year would really help my development," Williams said. "I feel like I have a lot more out there to put on the field and our team has the potential to be really good this season, it made it kind of an easy decision."

Williams announced in late December that he will return to Syracuse for the 2022 season and will not enter the NFL Draft. Williams started at cornerback for the Orange the last two seasons and led the ACC in pass break ups last season. In 2020, Williams was named a Freshman All-American.

After a lingering hamstring injury that prevented Williams to be at his full potential in 2021, Williams says he can use this season to improve his game and draft stock.

After missing most of 2021, Syracuse's Chris Elmore eager for last go-round: 'Everything happens for a reason' (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football's jack-of-all-trades received jarring news just before the team was set to leave for its season opener at Ohio last year. Chris Elmore, the senior fullback/tight end, said head coach Dino Babers pulled him into a meeting ahead of the team boarding its bus to leave for Athens.

"He came over and told me that he wanted to meet with me," Elmore said. "I thought it would just be a regular meeting. And then he told me I wasn’t playing."

Elmore would miss the first four games of the campaign for a reason that still isn't fully clear. He was not injured or disciplined within the program, sources said previously. Elmore said last week that he did not receive notice of a suspension from the NCAA, though he did appeal some kind of initial ruling over the summer. He declined to expound on the situation.

Syracuse football: Mikel Jones, Garrett Williams return to bolster defense (tniaam; Ostrowski)

The Syracuse Orange recently began spring football practice as the team prepares to move past a disappointing end to last season. Friday was the first day with pads on - and the first chance to see some familiar faces in action.

While there are a few holes to fill before the 2022 campaign gets underway, the defense looks to maintain last year’s form. This unit ranked #19 nationally in total defense (yards allowed per game) during the regular season, in large part due to the efforts of LB Mikel Jones and DB Garrett Williams. Neither was guaranteed to return to Syracuse, but both eventually decided to put off the NFL Draft for one more year.

Jones was one of the most consistent players not just on the Orange, but in the entire ACC last season. He led the conference in solo tackles with 60, was second in total tackles with 110, and was fifth with 13 tackles for loss. All of that earned Jones a First Team All-ACC distinction and some NFL attention prior to the Draft. However, it wasn’t enough in his eyes.

Central NY man stuck in salt spreader for over an hour while firefighters worked to free him (PS; Kirk)

A man spent more than an hour Monday morning stuck halfway in a truck salt spreader outside a factory in Oneida County, police said.

A worker at Briggs and Stratton facility heard someone yelling for help and discovered a man in his 30s stuck in a salt spreader on the back of a pickup truck, said Police Chief Rob Drake of the Sherrill Police Department. The factory is at 100 E. Seneca St. in Sherrill.

The man was loading salt into the spreader and got up on the spreader, Drake said.

“He got up in there and it pulled him in,” Drake said.

The worker called 911 just before 7:30 a.m. It took first responders an hour and a half to free the man who was lodged halfway in and halfway out, he said.

The box of the salt spreader had to be cut open, he said.

Firefighters originally thought the man would need to be airlifted due to possible internal injuries but the request for the helicopter was canceled.

The man’s ankle was injured and he was taken to a hospital but is expected to be ok, he said.
