Welcome to National Smile Day!

You've probably heard that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. But, somehow, over the years, most people tend to forget this. Babies smile about 400 times a day, while the average adult only smiles 20 times. Today is a day to fix this and to smile as much as possible. National Smile Day was created by Dr. Tim Stirneman and Jim Wojdyla of Compassionate Dental Care in Lake in the Hills, Illinois, to "share with the world what the power of a healthy smile can do."
Smiling has many benefits. It not only reflects our current mood but has the power to change our mood. As we change our face muscles into a smile, this can shift or reinforce our feelings, and our mood will begin to align with the emotion on our face. Even fake smiles can make us feel better, and by doing this, we can train ourselves to embrace happiness more often.

New Syracuse QB Del Rio-Wilson Called “First Class” By SEC Coach – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

Quarterback has been a source of angst for SU fans for years. As the Orange have struggled to get their footing for the last three years, the play under center has been the biggest inconsistency. Garrett Shrader showed promise at times last season, but the transfer of Carlos Del Rio-Wilson certainly makes things more interesting. At very least, it adds a quality option to the QB room.

Del Rio-Wilson has plenty of innate talent. He was a 4-star recruit out of Cartersville, GA, the 18th best QB in the nation. At 6’2″, 225 lbs. he was #182 in the nation, and ranked 16th from Georgia, according to On3’s recruiting database. Cartersville is a powerhouse program, winning the state title in football crazy Georgia in 2015 and 2016. You may have heard of the quarterback who led the team to those championships: Trevor Lawrence.

The Gators have dynamic Anthony Richardson and a handful of other additions since Billy Napier took over for Dan Mullen. DRW was simply the odd man out. But Napier had some extremely complimentary things to say about him.

“Carlos was first-class for us,” Napier said. “I can’t compliment him enough. His work ethic. He was a good teammate. He’s done a really good job representing himself, his family, since he’s been at the University of Florida. Nothing but good things to say about him.”

“He’s done a really good job representing himself, his family, since he’s been at the University of Florida. Nothing but good things to say about him.”

Del Rio-Wilson was projected to be a Power 5 starter by multiple recruiting websites. He has talent. He has plenty of high school success. He’s young (recruiting class of ’21). He also apparently has maturity and the respect of his former program in how he handled his situation. He also has an open door to compete for playing time at SU if Shrader falters. DRW is also younger than Shrader, so he could be a longer term solution. This is a very solid addition by Dino Babers and company

Syracuse Recruiting Roundup: Deandre Duffus, D'Shawntae Jones - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

A Happy Memorial Day to all of our readers as we run down the latest recruiting news from the past week.

Syracuse football hosted four prospects from Canisius (NY) High in Buffalo this week. Starting in the class of 2024, Syracuse hosted running back Dyrell Howard-Dolson on Wednesday. The Canisius (NY) High running back has taken visits to West Virginia, Buffalo and Rutgers, and said he “really enjoyed” his time at Syracuse. He also caught up with Sports Illustrated’s Mike McAllister to recap the visit, and said it was the most fun he had on a visit “in a while.”

He visited with his high school teammates, 2025 wide receiver Jahyden Clark, and 2025 quarterback Gavin Schwab, and 2026 defensive back Demari Clemons. Clark had “huge appreciation” to the coaching staff for hosting him, Schwab referred to it as “great” and Clemons said he had an “amazing visit.”

The Orange will have other visitors on campus soon. 2023 offensive lineman Jaylin Johnson from Dunnellon (Fla.) High received his first collegiate offer from Syracuse in May, and earlier this week, tweeted that he’s looking forward to getting on campus. Johnson, a 6-4, 265 pound prospect, has also drawn interest from Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic, and is currently unranked by 247.

Another 2023 prospect that is planning a visit is three-star offensive lineman Deandre Duffus from Chaminade-Madonna (Fla.) Prep. He holds a variety of offers, including from Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Ole Mission, Oregon and Penn State. Syracuse offered him in April, and according to 247 Sports’ Andrew Ivins, he will be taking official visits to Syracuse (June 17), Indiana and UCF.

Here are some offers that Syracuse extended in the past week:

  • 2023 JUCO defensive back Myles Norwood from Iowa Western. He also holds offers from Indiana, Iowa State and Kansas.
  • 2023 offensive lineman Johnny Williams IV from Northeast (GA) High. He’s rated three stars by 247 Sports and holds offers from Arizona State, Duke, Georgia, Miami, Oregon and West Virginia, among others.
  • 2024 running back D’Shawntae Jones from Glenville (OH) High. Aside from his Syracuse offer, also holds one other from Marshall, and has received interest from Penn State and Michigan.
To finish things off, we have one recruiting note from the basketball world. McAllister also reports that Syracuse will be getting an official visit from 2023 shooting guard Reid Ducharme from Brewster (NH) Academy on the weekend of June 14-16. Syracuse assistant coach Gerry McNamara is the lead recruiter for the four-star prospect, who is ranked 92nd in his class according to the 247 Sports Composite. His offer list includes Iowa, Penn State, Providence and DePaul.

Syracuse football, in terms of returning production, among tops in country (itlh; Adler)

A lot of Syracuse football fans, myself included, are cautiously optimistic about the Orange ahead of the 2022 campaign.

The ‘Cuse has multiple new assistant coaches who, hopefully, will help bolster an offense that struggled in the passing game in 2021, when the Orange dropped its final three games to close at 5-7 overall.

The special-teams’ unit also wasn’t great, but I expect a rebound this coming stanza. Syracuse football coaches landed a massive quarterback commitment a few days ago to bolster depth at this position.

But the real question is, given the team’s daunting schedule, can the ‘Cuse squeak out at least six victories to qualify for a post-season bowl contest?

In 2022, Syracuse football will have a veteran-filled roster.

I came across an interesting tweet that ESPN writer Bill Connelly put out not too long ago. He posted on Twitter, as of May 23, his national rankings in college football as far as returning production ahead of the 2022 term.

Updated college football returning production rankings. Teams in green have risen by 15+ spots since Feb, teams in red have fallen by 15+, teams in bold have done so by 30+. pic.twitter.com/hZZ77DhJ47
— Bill Connelly (@ESPN_BillC) May 23, 2022

At that juncture, the Orange checked in at No. 9 around the country, at 80 percent, which I found to be an encouraging data set. In Connelly’s tweet, I counted six Atlantic Coast Conference squads in the top-30 nationally, including Syracuse football.

Syracuse Football: Night games and why they matter for the Orange (itlh; Fiello)

It looks like 3 of the first 4 games for Syracuse football in the 2022 season will be night games televised on major sports networks (with the other scheduled to be on ESPN2 at noon), according to a tweet put out by the team’s Twitter account.

Primetime
Kickoff times have been set for our first four games!
More: Primetime Matchups Set for Opening Weeks of Football Schedule - Syracuse University Athletics pic.twitter.com/luET51oVFW
— Syracuse Football (@CuseFootball) May 26, 2022

I know some fans are like me and probably prefer earlier game times because we are early to bed and early to rise. But here’s the thing, evening games are a great opportunity for the program and the players and sometimes we fans have to figure out ways to work around it.

Night games mean prime-time exposure and more eyes on the product because history has shown us generally ratings are better during prime time. This brings in more fans, attracts more potential recruits and is a big asset for current players trying to get to the next level.

Syracuse football will have multiple night contests in the first part of the 2022 campaign.

This year’s Syracuse football roster has Sean Tucker, Mikel Jones, Darian “Duce” Chesnut, the Garrett’s (Garrett Williams and Garrett Shrader), Chris “Moose” Elmore and Matthew Bergeron, who might have chances to play at the next level.

When you’ve got 3 of 4 games at night and all 4 are on major networks (ACC Network, CBS Sports Network, ESPN 2 and ESPN, respectively), that means more TVs will be carrying it and more chances a scout and potential fans and recruits can watch your product.

This might even help a player like running back Sean Tucker, who if he can duplicate last season or even improve upon it, increase the possibility of post-season awards like a Heisman Trophy. Many of these awards are voted on by people who try to follow as much as they can but rely on the eye test as well.

Monday Musings: JUCO Targets Update & Busy Month Upcoming

Syracuse football recruiting news and notes.

Syracuse Football: Top-notch offensive lineman to officially visit next month (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football coaches are piling up official visit after official visit scheduled for the month of June for a variety of 2023 commits and recruiting targets.

One of the latest to become public is from talented 2023 offensive lineman Deandre Duffus. According to his bio on the 247Sports Web site, the 6-foot-4, 330-pound prospect out of Florida will take an official visit to the Hill on June 17.

Per 247Sports, the three-star Duffus will also travel to UCF on June 10 and to Indiana on June 24.

According to 247Sports and his Twitter page, Duffus received a scholarship offer from the Orange on April 11.

Syracuse football appears to be firmly in the mix for three-star OL Deandre Duffus.

As a member of the 2023 class, Duffus this fall will be heading into his senior season for Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, Fla.

In reviewing his Twitter account as well as recruiting Web sites, it looks like Duffus has earned more than 20 offers from a range of high-major squads, including Colorado, Florida, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Texas A&M, N.C. State, UCF, Temple and USF.

Orange Watch: A most successful offseason for Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: It’s just over 90 days until Syracuse football kicks off the most important period in the seven-year Dino Babers era, hosting Louisville in a tough conference opener (1-7 vs. the ‘Ville in ACC games) at the Dome on September 3 (8:00 p.m. ET / ACC Network). Not only is it already the upcoming 10th season of ACC play for the Orange, but unless SU has a winning record and makes a bowl appearance in one of 12 league affiliated games, it’s more than likely hard decisions will have to be made regarding Baber’s tenure directing the program in the future.

We love summer, so no rush to suddenly flip the calendar to September.

But at the same time, we can’t wait until September and the 2022 Syracuse football season, one that we think has enormous potential to be a pleasant surprise, and exceed the 4.5 over/under number of total wins already put on the futures board by several betting sites.

Other than the concern regarding experienced depth and a sufficient contributing rotation on the defensive line, the ability to boot virtually every kickoff into the endzone for a touchback (there were none in the spring game with no live action), and of course keeping fingers crossed on injuries, this group should be the best under Babers since the 2018 team went 10-3 and capped it off beating West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

Assembling an upgraded staff of assistant coaches, effective use of the transfer portal for this year’s team, a fit-the-need recruiting strategy for 2022, and strong start for 2023 recruiting are the highlights since Pittsburgh trampled SU in the 2021 finale last November.

Here’s a chronological look at many of the offseason developments that has Orange Nation excited:

Florida State vs. Florida Football Highlights (2015)
ACCDN: Florida State vs. Florida: The #13 Seminoles renewed their rivalry with the #12 Gators and came out with a 27-2 victory. Running back Dalvin Cook started slow but exploded to finish with 183 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns and the defense held Florida to 262 yards of total offense.
I especially love the score - the "2" really highlights the futility of the Gators' offense against the Noles' defense! The Gators went on to lose the SEC CG to Alabama and the Citrus Bowl to Michigan, finishing 10-4 and ranked 25th.
Meanwhile, Florida State finished 10-3 and ranked 14th nationally after losing to Houston in the Peach Bowl. However, nothing can take away the fact that this marked the 3rd consecutive win in Gainesville for the visiting Seminoles!

Great OOC Wins: Penn State/Pitt 2016 (RX; HM)

Great OOC Wins: Penn State/Pitt 2016

Pitt vs Penn State used to be one of best games on Rivalry Weekend. It was up there with Ohio State vs Michigan and Alabama vs Auburn. People like me might go all season without watching either team play a single game - yet when they tee'd it up against each other, it was "must see tv".
Then Penn State joined the Big Ten and all that changed. Suddenly, the Nittany Lions couldn't be bothered with an in-state rival any more. They told themselves that, now that they were in the Big Ten, they were "unrivaled" and therefore had no non-conference rivals.
Yet try as they might, they just couldn't kill the Keystone Rivalry. So, after a 16-year hiatus, the schools agreed to play a 4-game series, starting with this game in Pittsburgh in 2016...

2016 Penn State vs Pitt -- 30 minutes

Pitt beat their "unrivaled" rivals, 42-39. What made it even sweeter was the fact that the Nitt-wits went on to claim the Big Ten championship in football that year. The Panthers also won a conference game later that season at #3 Clemson - the Tigers' only loss of the year in what ended up being an ACC and National Championship season for them. That means Pitt held victories over both the Big Ten and ACC champions in 2016!

Wake Forest QB Billy Edwards Jr. Announces Transfer Commitment (thespun.com; Gould)

Former Wake Forest quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. announced his transfer to Maryland on Sunday.
The three-star prospect looked ahead to "new beginnings" by revealing his commitment to the Terrapins on Twitter.

Edwards spent his only season at Wake Forest as a redshirt freshman out of Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia. The 6'3", 215-pound passer ranked 104th among all quarterbacks on the 247Sports composite.

Following an impressive spring game performance, Edwards entered the transfer portal last April. He'll now likely back up Taulia Tagovailoa, the brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa led Maryland to its first winning record (7-6) since 2014 with 26 passing touchdowns last season. The Terrapins closed the 2021 campaign with a decisive 54-10 win over No. 15 Virginia Tech in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Clemson Tigers taking a few steps back as ACC Football leader:Other teams are starting to emerge as top contenders - Greensboro Sports (greensboro.com; Wiesenfeld)

From 2015 to 2020 the Clemson Tigers won the ACC every year. Amazingly, they beat a different team each time, firmly establishing themselves as the best team in the conference and one of the best programs in America. They won a national championship in two of those seasons, too.

However, last year, the program came “crashing back down to earth” with a 10-3 season. Their defense was among the best in the nation but without solid quarterback play, they struggled to score, opening the door for Wake Forest to steal the Atlantic Division, and get into the ACC Championship Game, where they were beaten by Pitt.

As the 2022 season creeps closer, I wanted to take a look at the contenders in the ACC and try and determine whether another program is once again in a position to prevent Clemson from reclaiming its spot at the top of the ACC (and back in the playoffs)

Last year, both Pitt and Wake would have been considered pretty deep sleepers to win the league. Let’s have a quick look at the top teams and the odds to see if we can find the best value.

ACC Championship Contenders and Odds

Clemson -110
Clemson might have the best defensive line in the nation right now and that could definitely lead to them having one of the best defenses overall too. They gave up just 14ppg last season, which was second in the nation to Georgia, but they did not lose as much talent to the pros. The question for this team is quarterback. DJ Uiagalelei looks the part but the results have not been there. Behind him is freshman Cade Klubnik, so it is still his job to lose. I don’t like the schedule which has their first 2 league games on the road, including Week 1.

Clemson deserves to be the favorite but it is hard to justify the premium. Just take them against the spread in the best spot and you are right there.

Pittsburgh +600
Kenny Pickett was awesome last season, riding his success all the way to being the first QB selected in the NFL Draft. His replacement is USC transfer Kedon Slovis, who is likely just as talented, but has to learn the system and won’t have award-winning WR Jordan Addison to throw to (he should have stayed at USC for that possibility). The reason to like Pitt is their schedule but they do have to travel to Miami to close the year.

It felt like it all came together for Pitt last season and doing so again does not seem likely to a program that does not have the highest talent level. Pass here.

Miami-Florida +600
Other than USC, no team has been as buzzy or busy this offseason. They have brought Mario Cristobal home as head coach and have a lot of positive NIL momentum too that is going to help them compete long-term. QB Tyler Van Dyke is the reason they can compete now though. The Hurricanes visit Clemson and host Pitt the last two weeks of the season. Those games give them a great chance to make up ground late or seal a division win.

This bet was made for prop swap, as it is very likely to go up in value over the course of the season. Miami is my pick to win the Coastal Division and that gives you a chance. There is good value there.

UNC +1000
This is the team that just doesn’t make sense to me on this shortlist (especially at that price). Last year the Tar Heels really disappointed as QB Sam Howell did not take a leap forward the year after all of his skill-position personnel went pro. Now they are looking to replace him, so there is massive uncertainty. The only reason to like the Tar Heels more than either team below is the schedule.

This is an absolute pass. I would not expect the Tar Heels to beat any teams on this list.

NC State +1100
The Wolfpack might have the best QB in the league in emerging Devin Leary. Like Wake Forest below, they have to find a way to beat Clemson, made even tougher by the fact that the game is on the road. In terms of talent in the Atlantic, NC State looks like the second-best team. They might be the most complete though.

Why not make a bet on a breakthrough by NC State this season? Best QB, balanced team, good payoff.

Key transfers and new players in ACC Conference for the 2022 season (draftkings.com; Nafselon76)

There probably isn’t a Power 5 conference that has been impacted more by the transfer portal than the ACC. The league lost Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison (Pitt) to USC. Alabama snatched up Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs and offensive lineman Victor Oluwatimi, who left Virginia for Michigan. But the ACC did get some impact players to transfer in the conference.

Kedon Slovis, Quarterback, Pitt Panthers (USC transfer)

In a conference that lacks quarterback depth and playmakers in general there might not be a more important transfer than Slovis. When healthy the 6-3, 210-pound signal caller has high-end NFL potential. In three years at USC Slovis threw for 7,576 yards and 58 touchdowns. Slovis’ best year came in 2019 as a freshman when he threw for 3,502 yards and 30 touchdowns. He was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2019 and first-team All-Pac during the abbreviated season in 2020. If Slovis can stay healthy he could give Pitt its second first-round quarterback selection in as many years.

Jared Verse, Defensive End, Florida State (Albany transfer)

Florida State will have as many as four new starters from the transfer portal (it would have been five if wide receiver Winston Wright didn’t break his leg in a car accident in the spring). Verse (6-4, 255) has the most upside of the group. A transfer from FCS Albany, Verse was a tight end with no FBS offers coming out of high school. He transformed his body during the pandemic and became an FCS Freshman All-American in 2021 with 10.5 sacks. Verse was the most sought-area FCS transfer in the portal and at FSU he will immediately have a chance to fulfill the shoes left by the departure of Jermaine Johnson. Verse might take a while to adjust to the speed of the Power 5 game, but over the long term he could be a good one.

Akheem Mesidor, Defensive Line, Miami Hurricanes (West Virginia transfer)

Mesidor (6-2, 270) grew from a 200-pound outside linebacker into a second-team Big XII performer in two seasons at West Virginia. As a sophomore Mesidor has eight tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He can fit in anywhere along the defensive line at Miami and offer an immediate boost as a pass rusher and interior playmaker. Miami took in several transfers under first-year coach Mario Cristobal, but Mesidor should provide the biggest impact.

Key ACC Transfers projected to start Week 1

Trey Benson, RB, Florida State (Oregon)
Tatum Bethune, LB, Florida State (UCF)
Micah Pittman, WR, Florida State (Oregon)

National expert believes Miami football has improved ACC title chances (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football program has added 11 transfers during the 2022 offseason. National college football expert Mike Farrell named Florida State and Miami as the teams in the ACC that “have Improved Their Chances in Conference With the Portal .” Seven of the 11 transfers Miami has added for 2022 are on defense.

Mario Cristobal has put an emphasis on the Miami defensive line. Miami has added five defensive linemen to the 2022 rosters. Edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and Mitchell Agude, linebacker Caleb Johnson and cornerback Darryl Porter Jr. are expected to start this season. Miami also added depth on the DL.

Jacob Lichtenstein and Antonio Moultrie are expected to provide Miami with snaps at end and tackle. Tackle Darrell Jackson has a bright future after recording 22 tackles for Maryland as a true freshman in 2021. On offense, running back Henry Parrish and wide receiver Frank Ladson provide Miami with more playmakers.

Miami needs more production defensively in 2022. The Hurricanes finished an uncharacteristic 42nd in 2021 averaging 2.75 sacks per game. Johnson should help improve the poor tackling Miami has had the last few seasons. Miami finished 48th allowing 3.89 rushing yards per carry in 2021.

Miami — Mario Cristobal entered Miami with weaknesses at WR and DL and now the defensive line is a strength. Additions of Akheem Mesidor and Darrell Jackson are huge for the pass rush as well as stopping the run and LB Caleb Johnson is a tackling machine.
The defense has improved enough to make a push in their division.

Agude had 55 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in 2021 for UCLA. Mesidor 48, eight and 4.5 for West Virginia last season. Jackson gives Miami exceptional size in the middle of the DL at 6’6, 300 pounds. Johnson had 45 tackles and three pass breakups since 2021. Miami will need more big plays from Johnson in 2022.

Dear ACC … the SEC doesn’t need Playoff expansion. You and your alliance do (saturdaydownsouth.com; Hickey)

Expansion may one day come to the College Football Playoff, but it won’t be any time in the near future.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips made that obvious in a conference call with reporters Friday afternoon, citing his league’s opposition to expanding from a 4-team field.

Phillips said league membership is “very much aligned in its position that now is not the time to expand the College Football Playoff.”

This is a curious position for a league that just missed the Playoff and will almost surely never have multiple teams in the field save for expansion. But Phillips’ explanation for the stance at least makes some sense on the surface level.

ACC wants NCAA to get its house in order

The ACC isn’t out to kill Playoff expansion. Their thought is that college athletics as a whole needs to be sorted out before getting to the specifics of college football alone. Like ground beef to be used for a later meal, CFP expansion is being placed in the freezer.

“To the ACC, we don’t have a College Football Playoff problem,” Phillips told reporters. “We have a college football and collegiate athletics/NCAA problem.

Homer Gere of North Syracuse celebrated his 100th birthday Sunday at an Armory Square restaurant. He also had a movie star in attendance.

That would be his son, Richard Gere, known for such films as “Pretty Woman,” “An Officer and a Gentleman,” and “Chicago.”

The party took place at Pastabilities, one of the oldest and most renowned restaurants in Armory Square.

The restaurant posted a picture of the Geres with their guests and some Pasta’s staff shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

“Richard Gere came in to Pasta’s tonight to celebrate his fathers 100th birthday,” the posts said, followed by the hashtags #thismustbetheplace, #richardgere, #onehundred, and #iconic.

Richard Gere was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Central New York. He graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1967. Homer Gere is a former insurance salesman who was also a long-time member of the North Syracuse volunteer fire department and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He still lives in North Syracuse.

That has led Richard Gere to make frequent visits to the area. Homer’s wife and Richard’s mother, Doris, died in 2016.
