Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!
Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.
How to Observe Heimlich Maneuver Day
The best way to celebrate the day is to make sure you know how to use the maneuver just in case you find yourself in a position where someone is choking nearby. You can get certified with the technique through the American Red Cross. You also could teach others how to use the maneuver after learning it. This also is a good day to remember to fully chew your food.

Opponent Analysis: Notre Dame Fighting Irish — 2022 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Sears)
As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team opponent preview each week over the spring/summer. This week, we’re previewing Syracuse’s matchup with Notre Dame on Oct. 29 with their major storylines.
The 2021 season was a roller coaster that rose to great heights before dropping off at the end for Notre Dame University.
Following an offseason that saw the departure of their three year starter quarterback Ian Book and one of the of the best linebackers in the country in Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to the NFL draft, the Fighting Irish were also replacing their defensive coordinator to boot.
Notre Dame answered by winning double-digit games for the fifth straight year (11), had a top 20 passing offense and a ball-hawking defense that ranked just outside the top 10 in interceptions and sacks, and tied for seventh in defensive touchdowns. They finished the year with an exclamation point, handing the Stanford Cardinals a 45-14 loss and punching their ticket to the Playstation Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State.
Then came the drop. Three days after the win over the Cardinals, head coach Brian Kelly announced he was leaving to take the head coaching job at LSU. First year defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman became the interim head coach a week later and had three weeks to prepare for the Fiesta Bowl with two different positional responsibilities.
That game started well, but Notre Dame blew a 21-point second quarter lead to lose 37-35. Jack Coan had five passing touchdowns and a Fiesta Bowl record 509 passing yards but it ultimately wasn’t enough. A tough end to such a dominant season.

Florida Atlantic Transfer D’Marcus Adams Looks to Bring Speed and Success to Syracuse (SI; Kelly)
It wasn’t long ago when D’Marcus Adams was almost out of options with his football career. After staff turnover at Rutgers and Missouri in the spring of 2020, Adams was out of options in the transfer portal before he got a call from a familiar face.
“Later down the line, Coach Taggart hit me up and said he had an open scholarship for me if that’s what I wanted to do,” Adams said. “If I wasn’t enrolled in classes that summer I wouldn’t have been in school. So I decided to go to FAU.”
The lack of options wasn’t something Adams was used to. He starred at wide receiver at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida. Adams was the Daytona Beach News-Journal Male Athlete of the Year his senior year and was rated the 25th best high school receiver in the country by ESPN.
“I was a four star so I had just about every offer coming out of high school,” Adams said.
Some of those offers included Nebraska, Penn State, Rutgers and Minnesota. Adams chose Florida State due to a connection he had in high school.
“My high school receiver's coach, he went to Florida State,” Adams said. “He knew the receiver's coach under Jimbo Fisher’s staff. I felt like I was going into a good situation. The receiver's coach knew me well.”
After Jimbo Fisher left Florida State for Texas A&M in 2017, Adams stayed committed to Coach Taggart at Florida State but he realized he didn’t have the same connection with the new staff since they didn’t recruit him.
Adams then left for FAU in 2020 and reunited with Taggart as he became the new head coach of the Owls after Lane Kiffin departed. At FAU, Adams played in 17 games in two years. He caught three passes for 94 yards and had 10 kick returns for an average of 24 yards per return.

While Syracuse looks to have the starters on the outside locked in, a strong fall camp can move him into the rotation on the interior. The Orange lack experience on the defensive line but this means younger players could get a chance to show their skills early on.
How’d he get here?: He was thought to be a Boston College lean but picked Syracuse over the Eagles, Rutgers, and Wake Forest.

2021 stats: The starter for the majority of any punting that was occurring, Williams punted 39 times for an average of 38.44 yards and two over 50-yard punts.
2022 projections: Williams is the presumptive starter at punter for the Syracuse Orange. There is a little more competition tis year with incoming freshman Max Von Marburg but Williams at this point is still the man. He’s also a potential backup placekicker for Andre Szmyt if you need to break glass in case of emergency.
How’d he get here?: Offers included Air Force, Army, and Hawaii.
What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars from the main sources. Kohl’s Kicking gave Williams five stars and ranked him the No. 4 punter in the class of 2020 as well as the No. 13 placekicker.

Of course, as you've guessed by the title of this post, Clemson won. In fact, the ACC Tigers went on to playoffs where they lost to the eventual national champs, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Auburn had a pretty good season themselves, winning the SEC West (and beating Alabama in the process) before losing to Georgia in the SEC CG and then to an unbeaten UCF team in the Peach Bowl.
Still, on a beautiful 2017 September 9th day in South Carolina, the eyes of the College Football World were focused on this non-conference clash of Tigers - one in which the ACC team prevailed.

The Clemson Tigers are heavy favorites to get back to the top of the ACC in 2022 with -130 odds on DraftKings . Dabo Swinney’s group ended a six-year streak of winning the conference title game after starting the season 4-3 but won their final six games.
Clemson’s 2021 issues came on offense, and it will be interesting to see whether 5-star true freshman Cade Klubnik can challenge DJ Uiagalelei for the starting quarterback spot. The Tigers have a fairly large variance for what they can be this season, and it depends on the QB position.
The Miami Hurricanes have the second best odds at +700 as they enter a new era under head coach Mario Cristobal, and Tyler Van Dyke appears to be the next star quarterback going into Year 2 as the starter.
The Pittsburgh Panthers are the defending champs, though they lost quarterback Kenny Pickett to the first round of the NFL Draft and elite wide receiver Jordan Addison to the USC Trojans. They will come in with +800 odds.

Notre Dame sees 2023 wide receiver commit to ACC opponent (fightinirishwire.usatoday.com; Chen)
The Irish have been looking all across the country for skill player talent and today they can scratch another name off their board. After California wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. decommitted from Oklahoma, Notre Dame was among a small group of schools that the star receiver was still considering.
Moore Jr. is not long considering anyone except Louisville, who got a verbal pledge from the six-foot and 185-pound star this afternoon. For the Cardinals, the Californian represents hope, one of the highest all-time commitments in their programs history. As for Marcus Freeman and the Irish, it’s back to the drawing board to find another elite receiver prospect.
There are still some big-time receivers still looking very hard at the Irish which include Florida’s Carnell Tate, Texas’s Jaden Greathouse, North Carolina’s Christian Hamilton and California’s Rico Flores. The hope is that at least two of these highly thought of pass-catchers join Texas’ Braylon James in South Bend.

Remembering Emeritus Trustee Harry E. Goetzmann Jr. ’59: Serial Entrepreneur Who Served His Alma Mater, the Nation and the World (syr.edu; Korey)
Harry E. Goetzmann Jr. ’59 was only 5 years old when he developed a work ethic that would last a lifetime. The Syracuse University graduate and longtime member of the Board of Trustees first demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit as a substitute paperboy with the Buffalo Courier Express. It required that he wake up at 5 a.m. He was clearly motivated, as he went on to secure his own newspaper route at the age of nine.
Goetzmann passed away on April 20, 2022, at the age of 84. “It was his determination to succeed that defined Harry’s life and service to Syracuse University,” says Board Chair Kathy Walters ’73. “As a student-athlete, he played one sport—lacrosse—and cheered on others as captain of the football and basketball cheerleading teams. He parlayed that enthusiasm for the Orange community into generosity with his time, treasure and talent, serving as a voting trustee from 1987 to 2003 and supporting a computer terminal room in the Schine Student Center, named for him and his wife Sylvia. We remain grateful for his generosity during his lifetime.”
While pursuing an undergraduate degree in business from the Whitman School of Management, Goetzmann was an Army ROTC cadet, graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate and serving our country by flying helicopters as an officer in the U.S. Army.
Goetzmann began his professional career with IBM in Syracuse as a salesman and later as a sales manager. Just six years after joining IBM, he started his own company, Syracuse based Continental Information Systems (CIS), which bought, refurbished and leased IBM computers to businesses. CIS, which was launched out of Goetzmann’s home, eventually grew to 1,200 employees with offices in the United States, Germany, England, Switzerland and Japan. Eventually, CIS expanded its operations into leasing commercial aircraft, trains and ocean-going ships.
A serial entrepreneur, Goetzmann also helped launch Schomann Entertainment, an entertainment and communications company. He then founded and developed MegaCom Limited in 1993, the first cellular company in the Republic of Georgia. MegaCom provided the ability for Georgians to communicate on an international level.
Goetzmann was actively engaged with numerous business and civic organizations, including holding Board positions at Cazenovia College, WCNY, Chase Lincoln First Bank, the Salvation Army, Hiawatha Boy Scout Council of America, Crouse Irving Memorial Foundation, American General Life Insurance Company, Central N.Y. Leukemia Society, Citizens Foundation, Computer Dealers and Lessors Association, Central NY Metropolitan Development Association and Syracuse Symphony. He also served as chairman of the Board for the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Syracuse Services Corporation.
In his free time, Goetzmann enjoyed relaxing with family and friends on Skaneateles Lake. He and his wife Sylvia, whom he met at Syracuse University, raised five children together in Skaneateles. He is survived by Sylvia and their children, Craig ’85 (College of Arts and Sciences), Dan G’87 (Whitman School of Management), Eric, Harry and Darlene; fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The former Borio’s Restaurant on Oneida Lake, which was sold and renamed Stone’s Lakeside last year, has closed with no indication of when or if it will reopen.
The restaurant has been shut for weeks due to what its web site and Facebook page said are “staffing” issues. But the Facebook page now appears to have been taken down. Owner April Stone has not responded to syracuse.com’s request for more information.
The restaurant’s web site contains this message: “Due to staffing issues we are now closed. Thank you to the staff and loyal customers for your patronage.”
The shutdown comes amid what is traditionally the busiest season for the year-round lakeside restaurant, which has also long been a popular venue for weddings and other events. Borio’s had been in business since 1960.
Stone, a local business executive, bought the four-acre property and business at 8891 McConnell’s Parkway from the Borio family for $1.7 million at an online auction last summer.
Stone also owns Stone’s Steakhouse in DeWitt, which is open, and is president of a healthcare company called CNY Infusion Services in East Syracuse.
At the time of the sale last summer, Stone said she planned to make no major changes to the lakeside restaurant, which fulfilled a desire by the Borio family.
“The restaurant has been such an ICON in the central New York area for so long that I have no plans for major changes,” Stone said then via an email.

2017 Auburn vs Clemson -- 30 minutesOf course, as you've guessed by the title of this post, Clemson won. In fact, the ACC Tigers went on to playoffs where they lost to the eventual national champs, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Auburn had a pretty good season themselves, winning the SEC West (and beating Alabama in the process) before losing to Georgia in the SEC CG and then to an unbeaten UCF team in the Peach Bowl.
Still, on a beautiful 2017 September 9th day in South Carolina, the eyes of the College Football World were focused on this non-conference clash of Tigers - one in which the ACC team prevailed.

Odds to win 2022 ACC Conference Championship (draftkings.com; Buchinger)
The Clemson Tigers are heavy favorites to get back to the top of the ACC in 2022 with -130 odds on DraftKings . Dabo Swinney’s group ended a six-year streak of winning the conference title game after starting the season 4-3 but won their final six games.
Clemson’s 2021 issues came on offense, and it will be interesting to see whether 5-star true freshman Cade Klubnik can challenge DJ Uiagalelei for the starting quarterback spot. The Tigers have a fairly large variance for what they can be this season, and it depends on the QB position.
The Miami Hurricanes have the second best odds at +700 as they enter a new era under head coach Mario Cristobal, and Tyler Van Dyke appears to be the next star quarterback going into Year 2 as the starter.
The Pittsburgh Panthers are the defending champs, though they lost quarterback Kenny Pickett to the first round of the NFL Draft and elite wide receiver Jordan Addison to the USC Trojans. They will come in with +800 odds.

Notre Dame sees 2023 wide receiver commit to ACC opponent (fightinirishwire.usatoday.com; Chen)
The Irish have been looking all across the country for skill player talent and today they can scratch another name off their board. After California wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. decommitted from Oklahoma, Notre Dame was among a small group of schools that the star receiver was still considering.
Moore Jr. is not long considering anyone except Louisville, who got a verbal pledge from the six-foot and 185-pound star this afternoon. For the Cardinals, the Californian represents hope, one of the highest all-time commitments in their programs history. As for Marcus Freeman and the Irish, it’s back to the drawing board to find another elite receiver prospect.
There are still some big-time receivers still looking very hard at the Irish which include Florida’s Carnell Tate, Texas’s Jaden Greathouse, North Carolina’s Christian Hamilton and California’s Rico Flores. The hope is that at least two of these highly thought of pass-catchers join Texas’ Braylon James in South Bend.

Remembering Emeritus Trustee Harry E. Goetzmann Jr. ’59: Serial Entrepreneur Who Served His Alma Mater, the Nation and the World (syr.edu; Korey)
Harry E. Goetzmann Jr. ’59 was only 5 years old when he developed a work ethic that would last a lifetime. The Syracuse University graduate and longtime member of the Board of Trustees first demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit as a substitute paperboy with the Buffalo Courier Express. It required that he wake up at 5 a.m. He was clearly motivated, as he went on to secure his own newspaper route at the age of nine.
Goetzmann passed away on April 20, 2022, at the age of 84. “It was his determination to succeed that defined Harry’s life and service to Syracuse University,” says Board Chair Kathy Walters ’73. “As a student-athlete, he played one sport—lacrosse—and cheered on others as captain of the football and basketball cheerleading teams. He parlayed that enthusiasm for the Orange community into generosity with his time, treasure and talent, serving as a voting trustee from 1987 to 2003 and supporting a computer terminal room in the Schine Student Center, named for him and his wife Sylvia. We remain grateful for his generosity during his lifetime.”
While pursuing an undergraduate degree in business from the Whitman School of Management, Goetzmann was an Army ROTC cadet, graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate and serving our country by flying helicopters as an officer in the U.S. Army.
Goetzmann began his professional career with IBM in Syracuse as a salesman and later as a sales manager. Just six years after joining IBM, he started his own company, Syracuse based Continental Information Systems (CIS), which bought, refurbished and leased IBM computers to businesses. CIS, which was launched out of Goetzmann’s home, eventually grew to 1,200 employees with offices in the United States, Germany, England, Switzerland and Japan. Eventually, CIS expanded its operations into leasing commercial aircraft, trains and ocean-going ships.
A serial entrepreneur, Goetzmann also helped launch Schomann Entertainment, an entertainment and communications company. He then founded and developed MegaCom Limited in 1993, the first cellular company in the Republic of Georgia. MegaCom provided the ability for Georgians to communicate on an international level.
Goetzmann was actively engaged with numerous business and civic organizations, including holding Board positions at Cazenovia College, WCNY, Chase Lincoln First Bank, the Salvation Army, Hiawatha Boy Scout Council of America, Crouse Irving Memorial Foundation, American General Life Insurance Company, Central N.Y. Leukemia Society, Citizens Foundation, Computer Dealers and Lessors Association, Central NY Metropolitan Development Association and Syracuse Symphony. He also served as chairman of the Board for the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Syracuse Services Corporation.
In his free time, Goetzmann enjoyed relaxing with family and friends on Skaneateles Lake. He and his wife Sylvia, whom he met at Syracuse University, raised five children together in Skaneateles. He is survived by Sylvia and their children, Craig ’85 (College of Arts and Sciences), Dan G’87 (Whitman School of Management), Eric, Harry and Darlene; fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The former Borio’s Restaurant on Oneida Lake, which was sold and renamed Stone’s Lakeside last year, has closed with no indication of when or if it will reopen.
The restaurant has been shut for weeks due to what its web site and Facebook page said are “staffing” issues. But the Facebook page now appears to have been taken down. Owner April Stone has not responded to syracuse.com’s request for more information.
The restaurant’s web site contains this message: “Due to staffing issues we are now closed. Thank you to the staff and loyal customers for your patronage.”
The shutdown comes amid what is traditionally the busiest season for the year-round lakeside restaurant, which has also long been a popular venue for weddings and other events. Borio’s had been in business since 1960.
Stone, a local business executive, bought the four-acre property and business at 8891 McConnell’s Parkway from the Borio family for $1.7 million at an online auction last summer.
Stone also owns Stone’s Steakhouse in DeWitt, which is open, and is president of a healthcare company called CNY Infusion Services in East Syracuse.
At the time of the sale last summer, Stone said she planned to make no major changes to the lakeside restaurant, which fulfilled a desire by the Borio family.
“The restaurant has been such an ICON in the central New York area for so long that I have no plans for major changes,” Stone said then via an email.
