Welcome to Women's Equality Day!

Women's Equality Day commemorates the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibits denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. Prior to its adoption, women were not guaranteed the right to vote on the national level. The first time an amendment dedicated to women's suffrage was introduced was in 1878, and similar amendments were introduced numerous times over the next 41 years until the House and Senate both approved the amendment in 1919. Then it needed to be approved by two-thirds of the states, and it was lobbied for by suffragists. On August 24, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state—and final state needed—to ratify it. On August 26, 1920, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed a proclamation that added the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution.

Fifty years to the day later, The National Organization for Women, led by Betty Friedan, held the Women's Strike for Equality. The day was known by some as Women's Equality Day. It was the largest protest for gender equality in United States history up until that time. Protests and rallies were held in more than 90 cities, with 100,000 women participating. In New York City alone, 50,000 women marched down Fifth Avenue.

Syracuse players already on the 2023 NFL draft radar (the juice; McGlynn)

Just one more week until our Saturdays are once again filled up with trips to the Dome or appointment viewing from the sofa to catch Syracuse football. While the Orange are hoping to build off a 5-7 season and reach a bowl game for the first time since 2018, there are also a handful of players that will have an eye towards playing on Sundays come 2023. Sure, the 2023 NFL draft might be a long ways off, but there are Syracuse players already generating some buzz.

Despite three straight losing seasons, including an abysmal one-win 2020 campaign, there have still been NFL-caliber players within Dino Babers’ program. 2021 was a high point with both Andre Cisco and Ifeatu Melinfonwu being third-round picks. There were no Orange alums drafted in 2022, but that is likely to change come the 2023 NFL draft in Kansas City. It is a far cry from the days of Marvin Harrison, Donovan McNabb and Dwight Freeney all going in the first round in a six-year span, but this could be one of the best drafts for Syracuse players in recent memory. Let’s take a look at who could be making the leap to professional status next year.

Sean Tucker, RB, Third-year sophomore

This should come as no surprise. Tucker turned a lot of heads in 2021, breaking the school’s single-season rushing record and finishing fourth in the FBS for rushing yards. He will return to a team that has struggled to throw the football downfield, setting him up for a monster role in 2022.

Tucker’s impressive footwork and above average quickness make him a nightmare to bring down in the open field. He is solid as a pass blocker, which will only boost his value to NFL clubs. He lacks elite long speed, but he has enough of a second gear to rip off chunk plays. ESPN’s Todd McShay ranked him as his No. 42 prospect and No. 4 running back heading into the season. If Tucker produces anywhere near the type of season he had a year ago, or flashes increased usage in the passing game, he could be knocking on the door of the first round.

Garrett Williams, CB, Fourth-year redshirt sophomore

Axe: SU football’s 2022 schedule could be historically tough (PS; $; Axe)

How tough is Syracuse football’s 2022 schedule?

It could make history and be added to a short list of challenging schedules in SU’s 133-year history.

If Dino Babers is going to shift the narrative surrounding SU football, which has had losing seasons in five of six years under the Orange head coach, he’s certainly going to earn it this year.

College football preview guru Phil Steele ranks SU’s 2022 schedule as the 12th toughest in the nation.

Both the Associated Press and AFCA Coaches Poll list five Syracuse 2022 opponents (Clemson, Notre Dame, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh) in its preseason rankings.

The last time Syracuse faced five ranked opponents in a season was 2004. It has only happened seven times in program history (1955, 1956, 1978, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2004) since the AP poll began in 1936.

If any of SU’s ranked opponents are good enough to crack the Top 10, that spells bad news for the Orange.

Since 2000, Syracuse is 3-28 against teams ranked in the AP Top 10. The Orange has lost six straight to top-10 teams since defeating No. 2 Clemson during the 2017 season.

The ACC might have the strongest group of quarterbacks among Power Five conferences this season, and Syracuse is scheduled to face all the top talents with the exception of Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke.

Let’s go through the SU schedule to see just how tough it tracks.

Early opportunities

If the Orange is going to navigate its tough schedule to a bowl bid, it needs to cash in some early opportunities.

Syracuse plays five of its first six games at the JMA Wireless Dome with its lone road game in that stretch against UConn on Sept. 10, a team that finished 1-11 last season.

Syracuse Football: Analyst projects ‘Cuse defense to be one of ACC’s best (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football is forecast to have a top-five defense within the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2022 season, according to an expert.

Eric Mac Lain, a college football analyst for the ACC Network and ESPN, recently sent out a tweet where he predicted the five conference units that will have the top defenses in the league this fall.

He has the ‘Cuse slated in the No. 4 spot, behind Clemson, N.C. State and Pittsburgh. Boston College rounds out the top five, according to Mac Lain.

IT’S FOOTBALL FRIDAYWe showed you the individuals… but here are the BEST defenses in the #ACC! pic.twitter.com/gJ12mGRWNO
— Eric Mac Lain (@EricMacLain) August 19, 2022

Naturally, the games are played on the field, and we all certainly take pre-season prognostications with the proverbial grain of salt. That being said, Mac Lain is deeply entrenched in the ACC, and his projection for the Orange is undeniably encouraging.

Heading into the 2022 stanza, Syracuse football has a lot to like on defense.

A little context here. A term ago, the ‘Cuse was fairly smack in the middle of the FBS as it pertains to points allowed per contest.

According to statistics on ncaa.com, Syracuse football allowed an average of 26.33 points per game over the 12 contests that it played in 2021. Last season, the Orange went 5-7 overall, dropping its last three encounters to miss out on a bowl game.

For some perspective, the 26.33 points per affair that the ‘Cuse allowed in 2021 ranked No. 66 across the country out of 130 FBS squads.

Notre Dame's Opponents: Syracuse star RB Sean Tucker, Dino Babers - Inside the Irish | NBC Sports (nbcsports.com; Farmer)

Syracuse may have gone 11-24 since its breakout 2018 season, but the Orange could also be the subtle trap opponent on Notre Dame’s schedule. Led by a likely All-American at running back and a possible All-American at linebacker, with 17 total returning starters, Syracuse enjoys a more complete roster than its recent struggles would suggest.

Then again, four of those five departed starters came from the Orange lines, and head coach Dino Babers brought in a couple new offensive assistants for a reason.

2021 REVIEW
That 2018 high point felt like more than three years ago during Syracuse’s 2021 conference slate, going 2-6 in the ACC with its only wins coming at Virginia Tech after the Hokies had largely given up on former head coach Justin Fuente and against Boston College before star Eagles quarterback Phil Jurkovec returned from a hand injury.

But the Orange was closer than that 2-6 stumble reflected. Its first three conference losses, leading directly into those two wins, were all by three points apiece. Win just one of those games at Florida State, against Wake Forest or against Clemson and suddenly Syracuse would have been back in a bowl game for the first time since 2018.

Babers’ seat is not necessarily hot, but a postseason appearance would have done wonders for both his job security and for general Orange optimism heading into 2022.

Instead, Syracuse lost all three of those and then followed up its momentary conference winning streak with three losses by an average score of 37.7 to 11.3.

Is Week One a Must-Win Game for Syracuse Football? (youtube.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Matt Bonaparte and Owen Valentine discuss the importance of week one this football. If SU loses are they doomed? Or does a week one loss mean nothing in the grand scheme of things?

30 Minutes in Orange Nation 8-25 (ESPn; radio; Orange Nation)

Steve and Paulie open the show live from the NY State Fair, where they quickly get into some SU Football talk and who they believe will be the team’s most important players this season. Then, Co-Captains of the Syracuse Pulse Macklin Robinson and Kyle Nuel join Orange Nation to discuss their recent hot streak. Lastly, Jordan debuts his new Icy Devil parody song and Paulie has a classic reaction.

Why Syracuse football will finish 6-6 in 2022 (TNIAAM; Haller)

We’ve made it. Bowl eligibility. I’m always the W/L optimist around here and there’s some paths for this one to happen. It’s not easy, it’s not even likely, but it’s really really possible and I’m here to tell you how.

Louisville Cardinals- Loss (0-1, 0-1)

The Orange have a bit of a trial by fire in their first contest. The defensive line will need to be up to the task right off the bat against Malik Cunningham and his versatility stretches the rest of the defense enough for the Cards to walk away with a close W.

at UConn Huskies- Win (1-1, 0-1)

Time to get back on track. Sean Tucker has his way with UConn and we get the lines on both sides some solid gel-time here. While Syracuse is heading to the Rent, they’re still going to walk away with an even record out of Hartford with a win in a blowout here.

Purdue Boilermakers- Win (2-1, 0-1)

B1G member comes to Dome. Neither team knows what the other is doing. Overall this is a coin flip, but I think the Orange come out opening up a little more of the new playbook after some weeks to work it in and comes away victorious.

NCAA Football: Clemson at Syracuse
Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia Cavaliers- Win (3-1, 1-1)

If there’s anyone who knows what Brennan Armstrong can do, it’s probably his former offensive coordinator and his former quarterback coach. The Orange channel this energy and while Armstrong gets his, Duce Chestnut and Garrett Williams still contain the edges in solo coverage enough to have Syracuse walk away with this one, and a downright streak heading into the FCS game.

Where to buy Syracuse University Football tickets online: Single game, season tickets, deals (PS; Axelson)

Syracuse University Football starts their regular season at the JMA Wireless Dome against the Louisville Cardinal on September 3, and will host six home games during the 2022 season.

Tickets for the games have been on sale since June, but there’s plenty of time for fans to check out the schedule and grab tickets to a game (or all six). Regular pricing is dynamic, which means that not all games have the same standard admission price, and prices are subject to change with demand.

Fans are not locked into just one price for games though. There’s a number of options available online through official vendors as well as ticket resellers, like StubHub, SeatGeek and others, if you’re looking for a great deal.

Right now, if you purchase tickets through Ticketmaster (the official ticketing partner for Syracuse athletics), you can get standard admission tickets for single games, like the season opener, as low as $25. And if that wasn’t cheap enough, you can even find resale tickets as low as $10.

Teen joins Syracuse football team through Team Impact (spectrumlocalnews.com; Callaway)

He brings the juice.

He brings the energy.

He's always positive. And he's all orange.

This is about 15-year-old Andrew Enright, who signed with the Orange on Thursday through Team Impact, which brings children facing serious illness or disability together with college teams across the country.

Enright, who has cerebral palsy, will be part of games, practices and team events. He's now an official part of the football team, a member of the Ohana.

"We're honored and proud to have Andrew join this program. He's going to make an impact on this team," head coach Dino Babers said. "We're excited to share the sidelines with him."

Syracuse University has worked with Team Impact for the past eight years, matching 11 kids with various sports.

The Blogger Bowl: ACC College Football Season Preview (tiytube; video; Blogger Bowl)

Our 5th and final of the Power 5 conference previews takes us out east to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson took a step back last year with a 10-3 season, are they poised to get back to the playoffs or was last year the beginning of a new norm? Miami went all in this offseason to try and bring back the swagger of The U, will other traditional conference powers like Florida State or Virginia Tech follow suit? Last but not least, Quarterback is the most important position in sports, and the ACC has a whole lot of good ones. Who will stand out among the rest?

#2 Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong | 2022 ACC Top 25 Returning Players (youtube.com; video; ACC Digital Network)

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong possesses all of the skills to excel as a signal caller in today's college football world. Armstrong has great arm strength, can make all of the throws, displays exceptional decision making and can run the ball when needed to help the Wahoos win games on the football field. The 6'2", 210 lbs QB ranked 2nd in all of college football in passing yards per game and total offense last season. In total, Armstrong threw for 4,449 yards with 31 passing touchdowns and 9 rushing scores. Hear what new Head Coach Tony Elliott, teammate Keytaon Thompson, Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham, Louisville Head Coach Scott Satterfiald, and UNC Head Coach Mack Brown have to say about Armstrong's game, and what makes him #2 on the ACCDN's Top 25 players coming into the 2022 season.

ACC football squads as Letterkenny characters (TNIAAM; Wall)

You and your friends were talking about the Syracuse Orange the other day when they asked when the #jokesandgarbage previews were coming. When a friend asks for jokes, then you help them. That’s just the decent thing to do...so grab a Puppers and let’s try and be efficient here.

Boston College Eagles- Glen

Sort of church affiliated. Kind of weird but for the most part harmless. Trying to make over their bland persona with a new look

Clemson Tigers- Wayne

Toughest in town even though fashion sense isn’t a strength. They might lose a scrap now and then but they bounce back. Always offering to lend a hand but to be fair (to be fair) they’ll throw a sucker in a donnybrook every now and then.

Duke Blue Devils- Devon

They were around at the beginning but now they could just leave and be replaced by some Degens from up North and the ACC football narrative wouldn’t miss a beat.

Florida State Seminoles- Ginger and Boots

Really tough but no one wants them hanging out with the group because of the rumors about that one incident with the crab legs.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets- McMurray

No one knows what they are saying most of the time and when they do that weird lift on the sidelines thing you swear Geoff Collins is talking about goin’ down to Cabo or the Keys.

Louisville Cardinals- Stewart and Roald

Love to be in all black. Unpredictable behavior and no one knows how they end up doing so well with the recruits from the big city.

Miami Hurricanes- Reilly and Jonesy

All about the dirty dangles and snipes and not into doing the little things needed to win. Can they put aside the hate for leg day long enough to win a ‘ship? Word out of Coral Gables says there’s more focus on team-building then worrying about sick cellys boys.

NC State Wolfpack- Daryl

Dairy farmer with a habit of screwing things up when they are going well. Can’t seem to handle success but Dave Doeren can’t believe they aren’t winning ACC titles right now.

North Carolina Tar Heels- Dan

Like to throw out some notes from Prof. Tricia’s lectures to make himself seem smarter than the others but often goes overboard withs his appreciations.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish- Tanis

Nothing’s personal here. It’s all about what’s best for business and if some feelings get hurt along the way then that’s just how it goes. Are they friends or foes? Depends on if you are helping them make more money

Pittsburgh Panthers- Shorsey

Win or lose they are going to fight and talk trash and if any HC in the ACC is doing naked handstands and taking monster dumps at halftime it’s Narduzzi. Odds are he’s even told a player or two to “give yer balls a tug”.

Syracuse- Gail

Every time it looks like the Orange are climbing back to being a relevant program the building burns down. Maybe MoDeans 44 would have better luck...
...

What Can Pitt Football Fans Expect From The Panthers In 2022? (clutchpoints.com; Flojo)

As the official start of the college football season approaches, one big question is whether or not Pitt football can repeat as ACC champions. They lost a star QB, but who steps up now? Let’s make some Pitt football predictions for the 2022 college football season.

The Pitt Panthers won their first ACC championship in 2021 since joining the conference in 2013. It was also their first conference championship since 2010 and their first ten-win season in 40 years. Without All-American quarterback Kenny Pickett and Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison in 2022, however, head coach Pat Narduzzi will have his work cut out for him.

Are they still strong enough to defend their crown? That’s a huge question right now.

Moving forward, however, with newly appointed offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr., the Panthers coaching staff is trying to prioritize the rushing game. Still, they have also stated that Pitt football is looking for a more balanced attack after leading the ACC in passing yards last year.

Coach Narduzzi revealed during fall camp that he expects a Panther running back to surpass 1,000 yards this season. That’s something the program has not accomplished since 2018 when Qadree Wilson and Darren Hall both reached the mark. Narduzzi is certainly hoping anyone among Israel Abanikanda, Rodney Hammond, or Vincent Davis could emerge as a star rusher.

for gbo

Wes Goodwin doesn’t like to cuss.

He doesn’t need a “get-back guy.”

And he’s certainly not going to accumulate bruises on his legs, gashes on his nose and blood on his face while playing scout-team quarterback against his first-team defense with no helmet, no pads and a Jimmy Greenbeans alter ego.

But just because Goodwin differs in strategy from his famously intense predecessor, Brent Venables, whose pursuits in those aforementioned fiery practices have been well documented, don’t think he cares any less about his job as the defensive coordinator for the No. 4 Clemson football team.

"I’m just as intense and as focused,” Goodwin said. “I might not be as outward (with it), but I promise you there’s nobody who wants to coach these guys harder and more intently than I do.”

Cerebral and unassuming, Goodwin, 37, represents half of coach Dabo Swinney’s great promoting-from-within gamble that will define a new stretch of Clemson football.

The Tigers maintained an unprecedented level of coordinator stability during a six-year streak of ACC championships and College Football Playoff appearances, as star offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and star defensive coordinator Venables declined various offers while helping Clemson win 2016 and 2018 national titles.

ACC teams continue to schedule big-time kickoff games because it pays good in the short term, but is this a case of short-term gain, long-term harm? Consider these tweets from David Hale:

Packer gives his picks for Atlantic, Coastal Division winners, ACC champion (theclemsoninsider.com; Oliver)

During ACC Network’s new daily studio show, ACC PM, Mark Packer gave his conference predictions for the upcoming season.

Packer is picking Clemson and Miami to win the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions, respectively, and he’s going with the Tigers to win the conference title.

Packer provided an explanation for predicting Clemson to claim the Atlantic crown, pointing to the Tigers’ early season matchup against defending Atlantic champion Wake Forest on Sept. 24 in Winston-Salem, and the status of Demon Deacons quarterback Sam Hartman, who is out indefinitely with what the school described as a “non-football related medical condition.”

Packer also talked about what he thinks is likely the biggest game in the ACC this season — Clemson’s matchup against NC State on Oct. 1 at Death Valley, where the Tigers ride a 34-game winning streak entering the 2022 campaign and where the Wolfpack haven’t won since 2002.

Illinois names Syracuse transfer DeVito as QB1 (ESPN; Rittenberg)

Illinois has named quarterback Tommy DeVito, a transfer from Syracuse, as its starter for this week's opener against Wyoming.

DeVito competed with Art Sitkowski for the top job throughout the offseason after transferring in December. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound DeVito started 15 games during three seasons for Syracuse, passing for 3,478 yards and 27 touchdowns with 10 interceptions, and adding 128 rushing yards and three touchdowns. His best year came in 2019, when he passed for 19 touchdowns.

"Tommy has made a big jump from last spring to where we are, really his composure in the pocket, learning how we play the game," coach Bret Bielema told reporters Thursday. "I'm not saying he's Russell Wilson, but when we got Russell, the transition he had to go from the offense he ran to the offense we ran at Wisconsin, I see a lot of those same things with Tommy."

Sitkowski started games for both Illinois last season and for Rutgers earlier in his career. He broke his left (non-throwing) arm during Illinois' win at Penn State last season and underwent surgery, which kept him out for spring practice.

Illinois is implementing a new "tem-pro" offense this season with coordinator Barry Lunney Jr., who came in from UTSA, combining tempo and pro-style elements.

"They're both good players, and they both have experience, but they both learn differently," Lunney told ESPN of DeVito and Sitkowski. "Art's more of a power guy, he's big and strong, he can move around. Tommy's a bit of the quicker, gunslinger mentality. They're very different. There's a pretty strong dichotomy there with who they are, but they both can function very well within the system."

My steak and eggs breakfast from JJ's at the New York State Fair. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Day 3 at the NY State Fair: Today’s handpicked menu and schedule (PS; Miller)

We were blessed more glorious weather for Day Two of the New York State Fair. That gave 48,591 of us the freedom to roam the fairgrounds and see fun free music from Great White (photo above), Ice-T and The Prodigals.

It also gave us a fresh sunburn as we sampled food we wouldn’t normally eat during non-Fair times. That’s a good thing. Well, except the whole sunburn part. Ouch.

Today’s Menu

I write about food for syracuse.com and The Post-Standard, I rely on readers to tell me what’s good in Central New York. That’s exactly what I’m counting on during the State Fair. I’m taking your suggestions and highlighting the best food and drinks here. If you find something that makes your belly smile, text me (315-382-1984) and I’ll give it a shot. I might even join you for a meal or drink and pick up the tab. As Bluto from “Animal House” said: “Grab a brew. Don’t cost nothin’.” I’ve already got a decent-sized list started, and a few readers took me up on that offer.

OK, let’s set today’s picnic table:

Breakfast: You know what was really missing from last year’s State Fair? Breakfast!

Vendors, grounds workers, farmers and other early birds have enjoyed made-to-order hot breakfasts here for decades. That was until the state experimented with an 18-day fair in 2021 that opened at 11 a.m. Heck, by the time people arrived at State Fair Boulevard, it was time for sausage sandwiches and deep-fried stuff.

Now that we’re back to a reasonable 9 a.m. gate time, those of us who get to the Fair on an empty stomach can start the day with a wholesome meal. We need something that will soothe our tummies and clear our heads from all we ingested the day before.
