Welcome to Columbus/Indigeneous Peoples' Day!

Columbus Day celebrates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Columbus, who was financed by the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, was attempting to find a western route to Asia—to China, India, and Asian islands with gold and spices. Instead, he landed in the Bahamas and became the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings landed in Greenland and Newfoundland about 500 years earlier. Not only does the United States celebrate the day, but many Latin American countries observe it as "Día de la Raza," Spain observes it as "Día de la Hispanidad," and various other countries celebrate the day as well.

Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrates the culture, traditions, history, and contributions of Native Americans, and acknowledges that they were the first inhabitants of the Americas. Taking place on the same day as Columbus Day—the second Monday of October—the holiday also recognizes Columbus's atrocities and enslavement of Native peoples. A day to rethink history, Indigenous Peoples' Day exposes the irony of the belief that Columbus is the "discoverer" of the Americas, when people were there before him, and it acknowledges that the colonial takeover of the Americas began with him, which led to millions of deaths and the forced assimilation of Native peoples. Indigenous Peoples' Day started as an alternative holiday or counter-celebration by those opposed to Columbus, who believe that he represents the violent colonization of the Western Hemisphere.

Howard rushes for 2 TDs; DeVito injured (How Syracuse football transfers fared) (PS; Owens)

Jarveon Howard rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead Alcorn State to a win over Mississippi Valley State in a college football game on Saturday.

Howard rushed 24 times for 63 yards for the Braves in a 30-7 victory, and added one reception for 12 yards. Howard had first-half touchdown runs of 4 and 1 yards. Alcorn State improved to 3-2, 2-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Howard has rushed for 634 yards in just 5 games this season, including a 295-yard effort in a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on September 24.

Here’s a look at how some other transfers from Syracuse University fared this weekend:

Luke Benson, TE, Georgia Tech: Benson was targeted once but had no catches in Georgia Tech’s 23-20 overtime win over Duke. Benson has 5 catches for 47 yards this season.

Geoffrey Cantin-Arku, LB, Memphis: Cantin-Arku had three tackes, two solo, as Memphis lost 33-32 to the Houston Cougars on Friday night. He has 23 tackles and one sack this season.

Tommy DeVito, quarterback, Illinois: DeVito was 6-for-11 passing for 42 yards and rushed four times for 21 yards before leaving with an injury in the first quarter of Illinois’ 9-6 win over Iowa on Saturday. He did not return. Illini coach Bret Bielema told the Associated Press after the game that DeVito “re-aggravated” an ankle injury.

Curtis Harper, DL, Akron: Harper did not have any tackles as Akron lost at Ohio, 55-34. Harper has 10 tackles this season.

Jawhar Jordan, RB, Louisville: Jordan rushed 11 times for 29 yards and a touchdown as the Cardinals beat Virginia 34-17. Jordan has rushed for 202 yards on 53 carries this season.

Cooper Lutz, RB, Vanderbilt: Lutz did not carry the ball, but did get a tackle on special teams for the Commodores, who lost to Ole Miss, 52-28. Lutz has 3 carries for 12 yards and a touchdown and has one reception for 27 yards this season.

N.C. State's starting QB injures shoulder, will have MRI ahead of SU game (PS; Mink)

North Carolina State quarterback Devin Leary will undergo an MRI on his right throwing shoulder Sunday, coach Dave Doeren told reporters after Saturday night’s 19-17 win against Florida State.

Leary, the preseason player of the year in the ACC, left the game favoring his shoulder after landing hard on the turf on a roughing-the-passer penalty in the third quarter.

Doeren told reporters after the game initial X-rays showed no significant injury. Leary wore a sling on his right arm when he returned to the sideline in the second half.

The injury looms large ahead of N.C. State’s game at Syracuse next week (3:30 p.m.; ACC Network).

Leary is one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC, throwing for 1,265 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions on the season. He had completed 10-of-21 passes for 130 yards with a touchdown and an interception prior to his exit.

Charleston Southern grad transfer Jack Chambers entered the game for Leary with the Wolfpack trailing 17-10. Chambers rushed for 39 yards and did not complete his only pass attempt in the game.

Saturday’s matchup between the Orange (5-0, 2-0 ACC) and Wolfpack (5-1, 1-1 ACC) will be the first game between two ranked teams in Syracuse since 2001.

The game is expected to draw the largest crowd of the season in the JMA Wireless Dome, with more than 40,000 tickets already sold.

SU moves up in polls to reach Babers’ Top 20 threshold (PS; Leiker)

Two weeks ago when Syracuse football first entered the USA Today Coaches Poll at No. 25, Dino Babers said it would take a top-20 ranking to get him going.

Heading into Week 7, SU has met that threshold.

Despite not playing a game Saturday, the Orange moved up four spots in the AP Top 25 to No. 18 on Sunday. SU (5-0, 2-0 ACC) also ranks 18th in the coaches poll, jumping three spots.

The move into the Top 20 comes just in time for the first matchup in the JMA Wireless Dome since 2001 in which both teams will be ranked. Syracuse hosts No. 15 N.C. State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Wolfpack (5-1, 1-1) squeaked out a narrow 19-17 win against conference foe Florida State but might have lost its starting quarterback, Devin Leary, for its impending trip to Syracuse.

Syracuse is one of 15 FBS teams still undefeated entering Week 7, but its boost in the rankings was also helped by a handful of Top 25 losses.

Utah, BYU and Washington all lost to lower-ranked or unranked opponents. The latter two both dropped out of the AP poll while Utah slid nine spots to No. 20.

No. 19 Kansas, one of the few remaining undefeated FBS teams entering the weekend, lost by a touchdown to No. 17 TCU but did not move in the poll. TCU rose to No. 13.

Could Syracuse Make the College Football Playoff? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Unsworth)

Life is crazy. Sometimes, the improbable falls into your lap. And according to Seth Walder, ESPN analytics expert, in worlds unknown to mankind, the undefeated, 5-0 Syracuse Orange make the playoff 10 times out of 20,000.
But sometimes, the wild and absurd happens, and before you know it the Syracuse Orange are in the College Football Playoff. Don’t tell me it can’t happen: The Allstate Playoff Predictor foresaw it, exactly 10 times in the 20,000 simulations it ran on Thursday.
So how does this scenario play out? Walder says the FPI (Football Power Index) gives Syracuse a .2% chance to win out. In one of the 10 scenarios which he picked out, SU runs the table. It would be extremely hard to keep the Orange out of the playoff with an ACC championship, wins over at least four top-25 opponents and a spotless portfolio. (And before you come for our heads, this is a simulation.)

The three other teams which make the playoff? 13-0 Alabama, 13-0 USC and Ole Miss(!). The Big 12 cannibalized itself (Texas won the conference with three losses) and the Big 10 did the same (Minnesota takes home the B10 title). Georgia was 12-1, but Walder hypothesizes the Ole Miss-Bama game was closer than the UGA-Bama game, and that’s why Lane Kiffin and the Rebels are in the CFP (the way the Crimson Tide look this year, that’s not out of the question…).
...

We ran 20,000 CFB season simulations. Here are some of the strangest playoff outcomes (ESPN; Walder)

It's whacky simulation day.

Every morning, FPI imagines 20,000 college football worlds that could unfurl themselves over the weeks between now and the College Football Playoff selection via its simulations. Plenty of them look like the college football landscapes that we figure will happen, with Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia reaching the playoff.

But sometimes, the wild and absurd happens, and before you know it the Syracuse Orange are in the College Football Playoff. Don't tell me it can't happen: The Allstate Playoff Predictor foresaw it, exactly 10 times in the 20,000 simulations it ran on Thursday.

Uncertainty is at the core of the Football Power Index, and therefore the Allstate Playoff Predictor. And so we're harnessing the unpredictable nature of college football to find some of the wildest simulations that our model produced -- meaning they were at least feasible, even if highly, highly improbable. Let's dive in, starting with the aforementioned Orange.

Syracuse Orange: Welcome to the CFP!

Simulation No.: 3789 CFP
Teams: Syracuse, Alabama, Ole Miss, USC

On one hand, this is wild. Syracuse in the playoff? Ole Miss would've been a nice underdog story until the Orange came along and blew the Rebels out of the water, narrative-wise.

On the other hand ... they just have to win? Syracuse is 5-0. And while winning out is highly unlikely -- FPI gives it just a 0.2% chance to do so -- that's exactly what happens here in sim No. 3789. A 13-0 Power 5 champion? It is not going to be denied the playoff.

In fact, USC and Alabama also go 13-0 in this sim, so there's only one contested spot up for grabs. Minnesota and Texas won their conferences with three (!) losses each, so both are out of the picture.

The only other contender is 12-1 Georgia, which lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC title game. Do I think Georgia usually gets in over 11-1 Ole Miss in this spot? I do. But it doesn't! The Predictor doesn't give us any more details, so I'd say I'm free to editorialize and say the Bulldogs lose by three touchdowns to Alabama, while Ole Miss only lost by four in its game against Nick Saban and Co. The Rebels take the last spot!

https://www.heraldonline.com/sports/college/acc/article266932356.html (heraldonline.com; Alexander)

Jack Chambers began the game Saturday on the N.C. State sideline, ready but realistic, all set to watch Devin Leary run the Wolfpack offense against Florida State.

Chambers once was a starting quarterback — at Charleston Southern. He transferred to NCSU before this season as a graduate student, more than willing to be Leary’s backup in what could be his final year of college football.

But as the coaches like to say, roles can change quickly. Every play can make a difference. Leary was popped — hard — throwing a pass. He left the field in the third quarter clutching his right arm, later returning with his arm in a sling.

In a flash, Chambers went from sideline observer to central figure, helping the No. 14 Wolfpack to a 19-17 comeback win over the Seminoles at Carter-Finley Stadium.

“It was surreal in a way,” Chambers said after the ACC victory. ”It was exciting to see this team do great things.”

No nerves, he said. The players told him they had his back and he said that he had theirs. After taking his first hit, he was fully in game mode.

Syracuse Football: Orange currently in top three for dual-threat quarterback (itlh; Adler)

Talented and underrated 2024 quarterback Jacob Zamot appears to be high on Syracuse football at this point in his recruitment.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Zamot, a dual-threat quarterback who attends Millville High School in Millville, N.J., likely has a long way to go in his recruiting process.

But according to two recent media reports, Zamot says the ‘Cuse is in his top three, which is terrific to hear. Of course, as Zamot picks up additional suitors, the Orange’s competition for him will undeniably intensify.

Per reports and his Twitter page, Zamot took a visit to the ‘Cuse campus in late September, and he was in attendance at the JMA Wireless Dome when Syracuse football escaped Virginia, 22-20.

Syracuse football is a legit contender for 2024 dual-threat QB Jacob Zamot.

If you’d like to see some of Zamot’s statistics for Millville High School in his junior season, you can check that out on the MaxPreps Web site.

I reviewed his bio on several recruiting Web sites, including and On3. Besides the Orange, Zamot holds interest from teams such as Penn State, Rutgers, UCF, Temple, Villanova, Towson and Stony Brook.

‎Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball: Does Syracuse Football Deserve To Be Number 18 In The Country? on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Matt Bonaparte and Owen Valentine bring you another Monday Episode! The guys talk about Devin Leary's injury situation, whether or not SU is deserving of the 18th spot on the AP Poll, and decide whether they'd rather be in Syracuse's position or NC State's going into Saturday.

Syracuse is unbeaten, ranked No. 18 and a surprise in ACC (Apnews; Kekis)

When the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason picks were announced, the Syracuse Orange didn’t pay attention. They knew where they stood: last.

Surprise! Nearing the midpoint of the season, the Orange (5-0, 2-0) are unbeaten, having their best start since 1987 and ranked No. 18 in the AP Top 25.

“Every year is different, every team is different, and I just feel like they feel like they can,” coach Dino Babers said. “Now, we’ve got to continue to see. The proof is in the pudding, but so far, so good.”

Last season, Syracuse finished 5-7 and suffered three straight losses by three points. So far this season, the Orange are 2-0 in nailbiters: 32-29 over Purdue when Garrett Shrader threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Oronde Gadsden II with 7 seconds left, and 22-20 against Virginia thanks to a a 31-yard field goal with 74 seconds left by Andre Szmyt — his career-high fifth of the game.

So, how has the most penalized team in the nation — averaging 10 a game, tied with Cincinnati — remained perfect? It’s a combination of things, and luck is probably among them.

The offense guided by new coordinator Robert Anae is tied for ninth nationally with No. 8 Oklahoma State, scoring on 23 of 24 trips (15 TDs, eight field goals) into the red zone.

The swarming 3-3-5 defense, aka “The Mob,” tops the ACC, allowing 271.6 yards and 14 points per game.

And Szmyt, with the oversight of new special teams coach Bob Ligashesky, has regained his form from four years ago, when he was voted the best kicker in the nation. Szmyt has missed only once in 11 field goal attempts.

The defense, led by linebackers Mikel Jones and Marlowe Wax and defensive back Garrett Williams, indicated early that this season might be different in a dominating 31-7 season-opening victory over Louisville at home.

The Cardinals had beaten Syracuse badly three straight times on their home turf, but this time, Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham was unable to get rolling like last year, when he accounted for five touchdowns in the first half of a 41-3 beatdown. He was intercepted twice and lost a fumble and the Syracuse offense converted two of the turnovers into touchdowns.

“I think that the defense is really, really together,” Babers said. “I think that this feeling is growing and hopefully we continue to water it and nurture it so it can become fully blossomed into something that can carry us on the back part of the season.”

Biggest crowd of the season expected for Syracuse football vs. NC State (cnycentral.com; Brown)

Over 40,000 tickets have been sold so far for next week's matchup between #14 NC State and #22 Syracuse.

That means the two ranked opponents will bring in the biggest crowd of the season so far. The only other game that's had such similar numbers was the home opener against Louisville. 37,000 tickets were sold for the game, but attendance has gone down throughout the season, even with an undefeated team.

Since a larger crowd is expected next weekend, Lt. Matthew Malinowski and the Syracuse Police are urging people to plan ahead.

"Just be patient, don’t be in a rush." said Malinowski. "We're anticipating the crowds, and we’re ready for it. We’ll have the staffing in place, we don’t tend to see many problems at SU games."

Most fans are more worried about traffic and parking than they are about security. One Syracuse fan, Hardik Bhaskar, said there's pretty simple advice that he can give to those who want to avoid issues at the game.

"I highly recommend everyone just take a bike or walk because it’s kind of rough" said Bhaskar.

Tickets for the game are still available, with the cheapest ones being about $35.

ACC football power rankings: UNC, (and what?) Georgia Tech continue to climb (fayobserver.com; Thompson)

The top four football teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference continue to be from the Atlantic division, but UNC (5-1, 2-0 ACC) looks close to cracking that list while Georgia Tech won its second straight under an interim head coach.

Here are the USA TODAY Network's ACC power rankings.

1. Clemson (6-0, 4-0 ACC)

The Tigers remained undefeated with a 31-3 road win over Boston College. Clemson led 10-3 at halftime but scored the final 21 points of the game in the second half.

Last week: No. 1

2. Wake Forest (5-1, 1-1)

The Demon Deacons put on a rushing clinic against Army, scoring four times on the ground on their way to a 45-10 win at home.

Last week: No. 2

3. NC State (5-1, 1-1)

The Wolfpack came from behind to beat Florida State 19-17 but may have lost starting quarterback Devin Leary in the process.

Last week: No. 2

4. Syracuse (5-0, 2-0)

The Orange moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 during an open week and will host NC State on Saturday in their toughest challenge of the 2022 season.

Last week: No. 5

5. UNC (5-1, 2-0)

UNC looks to be the best team in the chaotic Coastal division after a 27-24 win on the road against Miami

ACC Power Rankings Week 6: North Carolina, Georgia Tech (?) continue to climb (augustafreepress.com; German)

The Atlantic Division continues to flex its muscles in the ACC, but North Carolina and, yes, Georgia Tech are beginning to make some noise in the Coastal.

North Carolina appears ready to take hold in the chaotic Coastal Division, where mediocrity, or worse, prevails. The Tar Heels took care of business with a 27-24 win on the road against Miami. Georgia Tech won its second straight under interim head coach Brent Key, beating Duke in overtime, 23-20.

Clemson and NC State solidified the top two spots in the Atlantic. The Tigers, as expected, devoured Boston College, 31-3. NC State rallied from a 17-3 halftime deficit to turn back Florida State, 19-17.

The ACC is scrapping the two-division format after the 2022 season. It may be a year too late as a Clemson-NC State rematch can’t happen, but should. Both the Tigers and Wolfpack are the cream of the ACC crop.

However, State could be in trouble as starting quarterback Devin Leary left the FSU game with a shoulder injury.

ATLANTIC DIVISION

  1. Clemson (6-0, 4-0 ACC) The Tigers remained undefeated with a ho-hum 31-3 road win over Boston College. Clemson led only 10-3 at halftime, but then after adjusting to the high school crowd, scored the final 21 points of the game in the second half.
  2. NC State (5-1, 1-1 ACC) The Wolfpack came from behind to beat FSU, 19-17. Trailing 17-3 at the break, the second half storyline was the two head coaches and the Devin Leary injury. State’s head coach Dave Doren made some key adjustments in the second half, while Seminoles coach Mike Norvell watched the adjustments and made none. Leary’s shoulder injury is of major concern in Raleigh.
  3. Wake Forest (5-1, 1-1 ACC) WF put on a rushing clinic against Army, scoring four times on the ground in a dominating 45-10 win. Army was determined to stop Wake Forest’s big-play offense. So, the Demon Deacons slashed the Black Knights in other ways. Wake turned the tables with an early clinic in rushing offense, against an Army team that favors an all-out running attack.
  4. Syracuse (5-0, 2-0 ACC) The Orange had a great weekend to be off. Syracuse will host NC State on Saturday night in their toughest challenge of the 2022 season. With a win over the Wolfpack, SU would be on a collision course with Clemson for the Atlantic crown.
  5. FSU (4-2, 2-2 ACC) The Seminoles dropped their second straight to a Top 25 team, collapsing in the second half, losing to NC State 19-17. Carter-Finley Stadium, a traditional horror house for FSU, claimed another Seminole squad, as the Wolfpack overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half. FSU QB Jordan Tavis had a Jekyll and Hyde performance.

Biggest Losers 2022 Oct 8 (RX; HM)

Biggest Losers 2022 Oct 8
Which ranked teams lost this weekend?

#11 Utah lost by 10 at #18 UCLA, 32-42.
#13 Kentucky lost by 10 at home to South Carolina, 14-24.
#16 BYU lost to Notre Dame by 8 in Los Vegas, 20-28.
#19 Kansas lost by 7 at home to #17 TCU, 31-38.
#21 Washington lost by 7 at Arizona State, 38-45.
#25 LSU lost by 27 at home to #8 Tennessee, 13-40.

COMMENTS:

How was Kentucky still ranked that high? Get them out of there!

BYU is good, but flawed. Lots of teams have trouble covering Michael Mayer.

It's the end of the yellow brick road for Kansas - they may not win again this season.

Washington became the latest victim of what we might start calling the interim coach effect.

That LSU loss doesn't make FSU look any better.

Other notable losers:

The colors blue and purple.
The American Athletic Conference: We knew UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati were the 3 best teams, but do they have to tear out the hearts of AAC fans every week?
Oklahoma: What's going on? I know Coach Riley took the starting QB with him to USC, but Sooners should be able to at least score, right? Texas 49, OU 0.
Big Ten fans: specifically those who watched Illinois beat Iowa 9-6 in an all field goal game. And people pay to see that?
The Pac-12: It's beginning to look like USC and UCLA will establish themselves as the two best teams in the Pac-12... right before they exit for the Big Ten. How devastating!
Texas A&M: Coach Fisher's stock continues to plummet as the Crimson Tide avenge last year's loss to the Aggies. Now there's talk of buying out his remaining $95 million contract.

Georgia Tech Football: Three Biggest Takeaways From Win Over Duke - Sports Illustrated Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets News, Analysis and More (SI; Caudell)

Georgia Tech won vs Duke on Saturday night and got consecutive win and consecutive ACC wins for the first time since 2018. It was not a perfect game by any means, but Tech found a way to win against a 4-1 Duke team that came into the game playing with a ton of confidence.

Until the end of the game when special teams breakdowns and some questionable calls by the officials, Tech controlled the game and Duke's offense had trouble moving the ball in this game.

Offensively, it was a better effort this week than the one against Pitt a week ago. Jeff Sims took care of the ball and was effective through the air and on the ground. He was injured at the end of this game and that will be a situation worth monitoring going forward.

So what are the three biggest takeaways from Georgia Tech's win over Duke?

3. The defense once again had a good showing

Georgia Tech's defense contained Duke on Saturday and had a great effort.

Georgia Tech's defense put forth thier most complete effort of the year on Saturday and held down a Duke offense that had one of the better rushing attacks in the ACC.

Georgia Tech allowed only 278 yards and gave up only 3.7 yards per play. Duke finished with 142 yards rushing on 33 attempts and averaged over four yards per carry. The secondary for Georgia Tech was also impressive. Duke quarterback Riley Leonard was 20-42 for 136 yards and averaged only 3.2 yards per attempt. Leonard was a surprise in the ACC this season with how well he has played, but the Yellow Jackets did not allow thier passing game to do anything.

The defensive line got three sacks on the day, the defense finished with five tackles for loss, and K.J. Wallace got an interception. It was a good day for the Yellow Jackets defense and hopefully it will continue in the weeks ahead.

FSU underdog vs. Clemson at home (tomahawknation.com; Kostidakis)

For the second straight week and first time at home this season, Florida State Seminoles football is an underdog in Vegas’ eyes.

FSU (4-2, 2-2 ACC) is set to take on the No. 4 Clemson Tigers (6-0, 4-0 ACC) under the lights inside Doak Campbell Stadium this Saturday.

While Florida State is coming off its second straight loss, a disappointing showing against NC State, the Tigers have started to find a groove over the last few weeks with quarterback DJ Uiagalelei finding a new level of consistency.

After taking down Wake Forest and NC State in consecutive weeks, Clemson overcame a slow start vs. Boston College to win decisively in Week 6.

From our SB Nation sister site, Shaking the Southland:

Very happy with how the defense settled in and container BC after some early struggles. Those defensive backs continue to grow up. Offensively, this one was a bit ugly but Clemson made the plays they needed to make. Florida State is going to be a big test for this team. Hopefully Clemson can get some of the injured guys healthy for that one.
According to DraftKings, FSU is currently a 4.5-point underdog to the Tigers, with the over/under set at 51 points.

Florida State is 4-2 against the spread this season while Clemson is 3-3, according to Cover.com. Clemson is riding a six-game win streak vs. Florida State, with last year’s 30-20 matchup being the closest game between the two schools since 2016, which Clemson won 37-34 after a controversial chop block penalty flag.

Mac Lain sets the narrative straight on Clemson (theclemsoninsider.com; Staff)

for gbo

On The ACC Huddle show, a few ACC Network analysts discussed Clemson following the fifth-ranked Tigers’ 31-3 win at Boston College on Saturday night.

Eric Mac Lain, the former Clemson and All-ACC offensive lineman, was asked why the Tigers aren’t mentioned with top-tier teams like Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State, despite the fact that Clemson takes everybody’s best punch and usually ends up on the winning side.

“I do think that there is a little bit of a narrative that some people would rather talk about those teams instead of the Tigers,” Mac Lain said. “But at the end of the day, when you look at the resume, they have one of the best in the country – maybe the best in the country – with two top-15 wins. You just saw the strength even building with NC State getting the big win tonight (over Florida State).

“So, I think it’s business as usual for the Tigers. I think — Coach (Mark Richt), you said it early this season, maybe it was even at media day — if they get the quarterback play I think they can, they’re right back, it’s curtains for everybody else, and that’s what they’ve gotten.”

You can watch Mac Lain, Richt and EJ Manuel discuss Clemson below:

Cha McCoy is a world-renowned wine expert. She’s opening her first retail shop in Syracuse (PS; $; Cazentre)

International wine industry consultant Cha McCoy often uses the term “under-represented” when talking about her field of expertise. It covers a lot of bases.

It’s about under-represented wine styles and grape-growing regions, she says. It’s about wines that are under-represented in local stores and stores under-represented in certain neighborhoods. And it’s about people who are traditionally under-represented as wine producers and consumers.

“It’s really about broadening, widening and deepening the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of wine,” said McCoy, an industry professional whose company, Cha Squared, has clients across the United States and abroad.

This weekend, McCoy brings that concept to downtown Syracuse, where she’s opening her first retail shop, The Communion Wine + Spirits, in the ground floor of State Tower Building. The grand opening is Saturday, with a celebratory wine dinner is planned for Sunday. (See details below).

The shop will feature a carefully selected collection of wines from around the world, from Italy to the Finger Lakes. Expect brands and wineries you may not be familiar with, such as House of Brown, a Black-owned winery in California’s Napa Valley. She’ll highlight what are known as “low intervention” wines and unusual varieties like orange wine, which is made in the Finger Lakes.
