Film Review: How SU's struggles allowed NC State back in the game (DO; Cirino)
Like in its nail-biting win over Virginia, No. 14 Syracuse generated almost all of its offense against NC State early in the game. The offense gradually allowed NC State opportunities to score heading into the second half.
Part of that was SU’s 42-minute long scoring drought. Though it held the Wolfpack to three field goals on Saturday afternoon, Syracuse seemed unprepared for backup quarterback Jack Chambers, whose dual-threat presence gave NC State offensive momentum in the second half.
The Orange eventually prevailed, holding onto their six-game winning streak and its first bowl game berth since 2018. But here’s a look at how NC State took advantage of SU’s dry spell on both sides of the ball:
SU’s first failed red zone conversion
Syracuse had a golden opportunity to gain a two-score lead before halftime as Garrett Shrader lined up deep in the pocket on second down. NC State had only three linemen at the line of scrimmage, and one of them jumped before the snap.
Shrader said postgame that he expected a flag to be called, so he spent ample time in the pocket to look for an open receiver. As he shuffled back behind the 20-yard line, he looked right then quickly turned toward the left side of the end zone. Despite being outnumbered by NC State defenders, Shrader had three receivers on that side of the end zone, and favored the Orange’s height advantage.
Shrader targeted Damien Alford, who opened his body toward the center of the end zone as he backpedaled toward the sideline. The throw to Alford got to him first, but Tanner Ingle came underneath and snagged the ball from Alford’s hands.
NC State expected the Orange to send all their receivers to the end zone, keeping three defensive backs at the goal line. With no intermediate routes, Shrader’s only options were to throw the ball away or hope a flag was called. Neither happened, leading to SU’s second red zone trip of the season that didn’t end in a score.

Less than two minutes later, Syracuse quickly moved past midfield after a 36-yard connection with Oronde Gadsden II. On the very next play, NC State lined up in a similar formation as it did on its red zone interception — a nickel formation with the third-level defenders sitting deeper.

My midseason All-ACC team: No surprise, Clemson and SU lead the way (PS; $; Mink)
We’re taking a step back and submitting a couple midseason offerings this week now that every school in the ACC has played at least six games.
Up first, we present our midseason All-ACC team. Just one team; not dozens of players that will be recognized at the end of the season.
So, that makes for some tough cuts.
Clemson led all schools with six selections on my midseason ballot, followed closely by Syracuse.
No surprise, the two teams meet Saturday afternoon in South Carolina with first-place in the Atlantic Division at stake.
On Thursday, syracuse.com will release its midseason grades and superlatives for the 2022 SU football season.

Analysis: There’s not much debate at quarterback this year, though Sam Hartman, DJ Uiagalelei and Garrett Shrader aren’t out of it yet with the second half still to come.
Florida State’s potent ground attack deserves some recognition, so we give it to Gibbons with Abanikanda and Tucker too good to unseat.
Poor Virginia: Former center Olusegun Oluwatimi is an All-American candidate and Rimington favorite at Michigan.

Is Oronde Gadsden II Syracuse’s Most Important Player? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Simone)
On Saturday against NC State, Syracuse may as well have only had one receiver on the field. Oronde Gadsden II was target number one, two and three for Garrett Shrader. The likes of Courtney Jackson, Damien Alford and Devaughn Cooper were practically invisible. The trio combined for three catches and 47 yards.
Jackson, SU’s leading receiver from last season, didn’t catch a single pass. Meanwhile, Gadsden went for 141 yards on eight receptions and added two touchdowns. The sophomore has 507 yards on the season, the second most in the ACC and more than the Orange’s leading receiver from all of last year (Jackson’s 389). Gadsden has also caught five touchdowns, tied for most in the conference, and, again, already more than SU’s pace setter from last year (Jackson’s three).
As far as this year’s team is concerned, Gadsden has more yards and touchdowns than Jackson, Alford and Cooper combined. The numbers tell you that Gadsden is not just the number one option, but essentially the only option.
The eye test confirms that. He’s the only one who can win a one-on-one matchup. He has the speed, the size, the route running ability and, as Dino Babers constantly points out, outstanding hands. Gadsden dropped a pass early on against the Wolfpack, which was almost shocking based on how sure-handed he has been, but was flawless after that.
You can’t describe any of SU’s other receivers in that manner. Whether it’s Jackson, Alford, Cooper or even Trebor Pena, none of them have the whole package. Some have nice traits, like Pena’s speed or Alford’s size, but nobody puts it all together like Gadsden does.

NC State football falls flat in Syracuse, offensive grades tank (technicianonline.com; Bowman)
Nine points, thanks to graduate kicker Chris Dunn, was all No. 23 NC State football could manage in its disappointing loss to No. 14 Syracuse. From a lack of adaptability to a new signal caller to inept play calling, here’s how the offensive grades shook out following the road trip to New York.
Quarterback
In the Pack’s first week of many without redshirt junior quarterback Devin Leary, graduate signal caller Jack Chambers got the nod at starter with freshman quarterback MJ Morris seeing a little bit of action himself. Chambers, who was thrown into the fire last week against Florida State when Leary initially went down, held up decently well under center against the Orange.
Throwing for 160 yards on 60% completion percentage and averaging 3.1 yards per carry on 19 attempts for 58 yards, Chambers showed his dual-threat ability but couldn’t translate it to the scoreboard. With an untested quarterback, offensive coordinator Tim Beck opted to call a conservative game that forced production out of a Wolfpack rushing attack that could never get its feet beneath it.
As a result, Chambers struggled to find his rhythm as a passer early and subsequently forced the Pack to punt four times in the first half. When the game finally got out of hand for NC State in the second half, Beck was content to open Chambers up in the passing game. The graduate transfer looked to have the tangibles to win this team games down the road, but play calling held him back on Saturday just as it has for the entire offense all season.

Running Backs
Despite rumors that sophomore running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye would return to the field this week, the running game was left in the hands of Chambers and junior back Jordan Houston. After serving as the Pack’s workhorse against Florida State with 24 attempts for 90 yards, Houston’s game wasn’t quite as explosive against the Orange.
Totaling 44 rushing yards on 12 carries versus Syracuse, Houston’s 3.7 yards per carry were comparable to his 3.8 mark against the Seminoles. A lack of opportunity and big plays, however, rendered Houston’s output much less impactful.

Syracuse football will face its toughest test of the season this Saturday against the Clemson Tigers. The Orange will need an incredible performance to pull off the upset in Death Valley and stay undefeated. Here are some takeaways from Dino Babers' press conference as his team gets ready for this week’s game.
Preparing for the daunting task of playing Clemson
Babers knows Clemson is likely the toughest opponent Syracuse will play this season. The Tigers have been the class of the ACC, recording 10 or more wins every season since 2011.
“Coach Swinney does a fantastic job, there’s no doubt about it,” Babers said. “Some of the finest athletes in the conference and the country. Not only do they have fantastic individuals, they’re a good football team. They have an amazing streak going on down there.”
Playing Clemson in Death Valley makes the challenge even more difficult. Clemson has won 37-straight games at home, the longest streak in college football by far.
“To be able to beat them at their place is obviously a very difficult task for a lot of coaches and a lot of programs,” Babers said.
Babers and Syracuse nearly upset Clemson on the road in 2018, but Clemson made a run down the stretch and came away with the 27-23 victory. That game was the year after the Orange defeated the 2nd-ranked Tigers in the Dome.

DJ Uiagalelei shares thoughts on Syracuse (on3.com; Truax)
Nine teams remain unbeaten heading into Week 8. No. 5 Clemson (7-0) and No. 14 Syracuse (6-0) are the two undefeated programs left in the ACC, and are set to do battle this coming Saturday.
Tigers quarterback DJ Uiagalelei had nothing but good things to say about the Orange after shutting down No. 23 NC State team at home, and shouted out Syracuse for staying undefeated in a tough Atlantic Division featuring four different ranked teams.
“ACC football, it’s a great league. I mean, it’s a great league, there are some really good teams,” Uiagalelei said. “Syracuse has been a really good team this year. They do a lot of great things on offense and defense. I know their running back is insanely good, and their quarterback – I know those are probably the two biggest guys on their team.
“As a whole, their defense has been playing lights out. They played NC State last week, they gave up nine points? I mean that’s pretty impressive going against NC State right there. I feel like they have a really good head coach, and I feel like they have a really good culture. It was tough for us to play up there last year.”

SU football will play in a bowl, but it’ll be awhile until we learn which one (PS; Mink)

But it’ll be awhile before it learns where and who it will play.

Less than 48 hours after most SU fans have taken steps to rid themselves of their post-game hangover, shaking off the cobwebs of Orange Crate and Clinton Street Pub, and have begun to realize the depth. So, are we really surprised? Are we really surprised that Syracuse has been the 14th-best team in the country by the Associated Press a day after thoroughly dominating the 15th-best team in the country? Are we really surprised that the Dome was deafening enough to force a former FCS quarterback to freeze up and render him useless in his 1st ACC start? Are we really surprised that this Mob defense was able to overcome adversity, seeing one of their leaders Garrett Williams, go down in 1st half?
Are we really surprised that Garrett Shrader, the biggest question mark going into the season, played like the biggest question mark going into the rest of the season? Are we really surprised that Oronde Gadsden, a former talented recruit and son of an NFL wide receiver, continued his streak of 100-yard games against power five competition and established himself as the main pass catcher for this SU offense? Are we really surprised that Sean Tucker, yes that Sean Tucker, may be pleased with his performance and finally looked like the RB we thought could contend for a Heisman? I don’t think so.

Both Clemson football and Syracuse are undefeated as they roll into Saturday’s match-up in Death Valley, but you’d never know it from the point spread, which opened with the Tigers as a 14-point favorite over the Orange.
That line has dropped to 13 as of this writing with the total at 51.5, implying a score in the 32 to 19 range in favor of Clemson.
With the win and cover against Florida State the Tigers are now 4-3 against the number on the season against the spread and 4-3 on the over.
The Tigers have covered three consecutive weeks against N.C. State, Boston College and Florida State.

ACC Football Week 8 Preview: Quick game capsules to get you ready for weekend slate (AFP; Wire)
Five conference games make up week eight of the ACC schedule, which is highlighted by a matchup of undefeated ranked teams in the Atlantic Division.
No. 5 Clemson (7-0, 5-0) hosts No. 14 Syracuse (6-0, 3-0) Saturday at noon on ABC in the only game in the country this week between unbeaten teams. It is the first time Clemson and Syracuse have faced each other when both teams are ranked.
The Clemson-Syracuse game matches two of the top quarterbacks in the country who enter the contest with similar statistics this season. Syracuse signal caller Garrett Shrader is averaging 289.0 total yards of offense, including 239.0 per game passing and 50.0 rushing. Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei is averaging 286.0 total yards of offense, including 237.9 passing and 48.1 rushing.
THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
The ACC slate kicks off on Thursday with Georgia Tech hosting Virginia (7:30 p.m./ESPN). The Yellow Jackets have won two in a row under interim head coach Brent Key and a win would keep them in Coastal Division contention. Virginia is seeking its first conference win of the season and has won two in a row over Georgia Tech.OTHER SATURDAY KICKOFFS
Duke travels to Miami on Saturday for a key Coastal Division contest at 12:30 p.m. on RSN. Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke has thrown for more than 350 yards in each of his last two games, including last week’s 351-yard performance in a win at Virginia Tech. Duke QB Riley Leonard had an outstanding game last week vs. North Carolina, throwing for 245 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 130 yards and a touchdown. This Saturday’s game will be the first between the teams at Miami Gardens since 2018, when Duke won by a 20-12 score.No. 13 Wake Forest looks to stay in contention in the Atlantic Division when it hosts Boston College Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem (3:30 p.m./ACCN). The Demon Deacons, who have been ranked for 20 consecutive weeks – longest active streak in the ACC – won last year’s game in Chestnut Hill to clinch the Atlantic Division as QB Sam Hartman threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Boston College has won on each of its three most previous trips to Winston-Salem, most recently 31-24 in 2018.

Where Does Pitt’s Offense, Defense and Special Teams Rank in the ACC at the Midway Point? (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Ludwig)
There are 14 teams in the ACC, and through the midway point of its season, Pitt is — if anything — slightly above average when it comes to its conference foes. At least, by the numbers.
Pitt boasts the ACC’s leading rusher, by nearly 200 yards, but that doesn’t mean that Pitt’s offense is exactly lighting it up this season either. And despite a heavy, heavy dose of injuries, Pitt’s defensive numbers are still toward the top of the conference. Where exactly does Pitt rank through six games?

Bowl-Eligible College Football Teams (After Week 7) (athlonsports.com; Ross)
Mid-October unofficially represents the halfway point of the college football season as every FBS team has played at least six games. That also means that quite a few have already picked up six wins, meaning they are bowl eligible with plenty more time remaining. In fact, 16 teams have already punched their postseason tickets.
There are 41 bowl games scheduled between Dec. 16 and Jan. 2, including the two College Football Playoff Semifinals (Cotton Bowl Classic, Orange Bowl) with the national championship game set for Jan. 9. That means 82 teams across the FBS will get a chance to play beyond the regular season.
It shouldn't be surprising that the remaining undefeated teams are among those already bowl eligible. This group includes the top five teams in the AP poll – Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan, Clemson – in addition to Ole Miss, TCU, UCLA, and Syracuse. The other teams that know they are going bowling are Alabama, Coastal Carolina, Illinois, Liberty, North Carolina, Tulane, and USC. And with nearly two dozen teams needing just one more victory to join the postseason party, this list will grow by the end of next Saturday.

ACC football power rankings: Clemson eyes perfect season, Syracuse cracks top-3 ahead of showdown (247sports.com; Marsdale)
Six ACC teams were on a bye in Week 7, but plenty of movement in this week's ACC Power Rankings. Clemson and Syracuse both continued their respective undefeated seasons. The two meet this week at Clemson in a pivotal ACC Atlantic Division matchup.
"I'm thankful," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said of being undefeated this late in the season. "We've beaten some good teams. Again, to go on the road and win is not easy. I think we are pretty battle-tested. We've just got to keep moving. Nothing carries over to next week. We have to start over. I'm proud. We are where we hoped to be. But seven games doesn't make it easy. We've got a long way to go. We're just trying to win the division. That's really all we are focused on. For us to do that, we have to find a way to beat Syracuse this week. That will be our focus. I'm excited for the opportunity we have."
Elsewhere, Miami snapped a three-game losing skid, while North Carolina improved to 6-1 and established itself as a favorite in the Coastal Division. NC State lost quarterback Devin Leary for the season.

In their 34-28 win in Tallahassee, the Tigers turned on the jets in a game that was tied at 14-14 midway through the second quarter. Swinney and company survived a massive road test as they look to reclaim supremacy in the ACC. Clemson is now in full control in the Atlantic Division after an impressive final two-and-a-half quarters in which they handled the Seminoles.2. WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (5-1, 2)
In its final game before the bye, Wake Forest blew the doors off Army, 45-10. Army put up just 10 points despite gaining 407 yards. Wake Forest now goes on the road to face Louisville and NC State. Should the Demon Deacons take care of business beforehand, the game at the Wolfpack could go a long way in determining which team potentially gets a New Year’s Six bid, assuming Clemson keeps a stranglehold on the ACC Atlantic Division.3. SYRACUSE ORANGE (6-0, 4)
Syracuse benefitted in a big way from the Wolfpack being without Leary, but 6-0 is 6-0 for Dino Babers, who knew this was a crucial season for him. The defense of the Orange held NC under 300 total yards. Can that unit bring the same energy this weekend at Clemson? Syracuse is a significant underdog, so it will be interesting to see. Nonetheless, it has been a strong start to the season New York....
ACC Football Power Rankings: 2022 Week 8 - Sports Illustrated Louisville Cardinals News, Analysis and More (SI; McGavic)
Despite half the league being on a bye, it was an eventful week in the ACC, particularly in the Atlantic Division.
Clemson did add more distance between them and their main competitors for the division crown with a win at Florida State, but they're not out of the woods yet. With Syracuse's win over NC State, that sets up an undefeated, top-15 showdown in Death Valley next week, one which should all but wrap up the race for the Atlantic.
Over in the Coastal, North Carolina seems to be the favorite as of right now, but that division is always complete chaos, so who really knows.

Remember when we thought Clemson's offense was the side of the ball that they had the most to worry about? Facing a good FSU defense, QB D.J. Uiagalelei had three touchdowns, RB Will Shipley had 121 yards, and the Tigers were 9-of-16 on third downs and 3-of-3 in the red zone. Defensively, Clemson left a little more to be desired, again. I think we can finally stop asking if Syracuse is good or not. They proved it against NC State. Sure, the Wolfpack did not have Devin Leary, but putting up 24 points against this defense is no easy feat. The QB-RB-WR/TE tandem of Garrett Shrader, Sean Tucker and Oronde Gadsden II might be one of the best offensive trios in the ACC. Plus their much improved defense set the tone from the jump.

Syracuse is ranked 14th in both the AP and Coaches Poll this week. The Orange moved up four spots in both polls. Clemson is 5th in both polls.

In this week’s SP+ rankings Syracuse are up nineteen to the 38th spot with the offense 56th while the defense ranks 30th. The Orange are ranked between Florida St and Pittsburgh. This week’s opponent, the Clemson Tigers rank 15th with their offense 25th and defense 19th.
The Football Power Index has Syracuse up eight to 24th between Kansas State and Florida State. The FPI now predicts that the Orange will reach 9 wins with 9% chance to win the ACC Atlantic division. Clemson is 7th in FPI this week.

Sean Tucker has one more player to pass to crack the Top 5 of Syracuse football’s career rushing list.
Even while battling bumps and bruises, Tucker continues to climb the Orange record book in a number of places. He’s up to No. 6 in the all-time rushing list after passing Floyd Little early in Saturday’s 24-9 win over N.C. State. Tucker finished the game with 96 yards and a touchdown.
The running back is averaging 107.3 yards per game. He only needs 130 yards to pass James Mungro.
Tucker’s game-icing touchdown inched him closer to the Top 10 for all-time rushing touchdowns. He needs one more to match Jim Brown and could move as high as No. 4 if he continues his scoring rate of one touchdown per game.
He would be tied with Ernie Davis and Dee Brown at 28 rushing scores.
While Tucker would be unable to catch Joe Morris with his 22 career 100-yard games by the end of the season, he only needs one more to pass Larry Csonka, who he’s currently tied with, to command the No. 2 spot.
Tucker could have been one yard closer another 100-yard game Saturday had a third-down spot gone in Syracuse’s favor.

The 2022-23 bowl schedule features 42 overall games, and Athlon Sports is here with complete projections and predictions for all of the matchups. With seven weeks of the season in the books, it’s never too early to take a peek at what the bowl games could look like at its conclusion.
The postseason officially begins on Dec. 16 with two matchups and continues until Jan. 9 with the national championship at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The semifinals for the College Football Playoff take place on Dec. 31 this year, with the Peach Bowl and Fiesta Bowl hosting the matchups.
The actual selection process is more complicated than in previous years, and as usual, some trading of teams to fill spots is likely to happen by December. However, nearly all of the necessary information regarding the 2022-23 bowl schedule has been released. Projections will be updated every week during the year. The ACC had its basketball tip-off event last week. The Commissioner spoke about more than just hoops. What did he say? Here's the video:

Besides basketball, the Commissioner also talked about revenue enhancement. He gave a brief update on the consulting firm the ACC has hired, Fishbait Solutions. He said they have completed their visits to each ACC campus and have met with each Athletic Director. Fishbait Solutions will also be present for the ACC Fall Meetings (ESPN will be there too).
Phillips also mentioned that there was a "sizeable increase in revenue" following the full distribution of the ACC Network. What kind of money are we talking? Let David Teel explain here:

DeVito returns, leads Illinois to 6th win (How Syracuse football transfers fared) (PS; Owens)
On the same weekend that the Syracuse football team became bowl-eligible, former Orange quarterback Tommy DeVito helped Illinois achieve that milestone as well.
DeVito — who left Illinois’ previous game with an ankle injury — was 25-for-32 passing for 252 yards and a touchdown as the Illini beat Minnesota 26-14 on Saturday. Illinois improved to 6-1 on the season, 3-1 in the Big Ten, and became bowl-eligible. It was the fifth consecutive win for Illinois, which entered the game ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press poll and improved to No. 18 in the poll released on Sunday.
“We’re going bowling in October, and that’s a really good feeling,” DeVito told The Associated Press. “But I don’t think that’s the team’s goal. I think we want to go way past that. But it’s just another notch in our belt.”

It’s been four years since Westhill’s football team took the short trip down Interstate 81 to face longtime rival Homer and its rowdy fans.
The rivalry, which dates back to the early 2000s when Homer rejoined Class B, was reignited during the Trojans’ senior night game on Saturday.
