Welcome to All Saints' Day!

All Saints' Day is a Christian festival that honors saints, and also celebrates the victory of Christ over death. The definition of saints and those who are being honored on the day are often looked at differently in Catholic and various Protestant churches. In the Catholic Church, the day is seen as honoring saints that don't have their own day of celebration. Many Protestants use the day to honor all Christians, both past and present. The day takes place on November 1 in Western churches in Europe and the Americas, such as in Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran, and some other Protestant churches. It is part of the Roman Rite in the Catholic Church and is a Principal Feast in the Anglican Church. It takes place a day before All Souls' Day and a day after All Hallows' Eve, commonly known as Halloween. Many Eastern churches observe the day on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Hosted by Marlowe Wax, Caleb Okechukwu and Ja’had Carter, "The Mob Podcast" is now six episodes into discussing and breaking down the lives of SU's football players off the field

The ‘Mob’ Pod: A look at the podcast hosted by Syracuse’s defensive trio (DO; Cirino)

When Washington, DC rapper No Savage mentions the “mob” in the intro to some of his songs, he’s not referring to just any group of friends. He’s rapping about the people he views as family.

The word “mob” quickly popularized in the DC, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area outside of music. It became a phrase for everyday circumstances that the region, and DC residents in particular, began to take seriously.

Syracuse linebacker Marlowe Wax, a native of Baltimore, learned the term at home, and the Orange’s 2022 defense adopted “the mob” as its unofficial name. And since then, it has become the name of a podcast, which Wax co-hosts, that has quickly captivated SU’s fanbase.

“We just felt like it was a tough word and we knew that it would be just for us and that everyone was gonna go along with it,” Wax said about the podcast’s name.

Hosted by Wax, Caleb Okechukwu and Ja’had Carter, “The Mob Podcast” breaks down each game and discusses the lives of Syracuse’s players outside of football.

Now six episodes in, the podcast is recorded after every game and airs each Wednesday. It has featured current and former Syracuse players as its weekly guests.

Instant Juice: JUCO OL Lysander Moeolo commits to Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Sears)

A quick take on JUCO OL Lysander Moeolo committing to Syracuse:

WHAT HAPPENED: Syracuse received a commitment from Lysander Moeolo, an offensive lineman from Navarro (TX) College. Moeolo was originally a three-star recruit in the 2021 cycle from Lacey, WA, and was the 168th rated offensive tackle in his class. He is listed at 6 foot 6, and 330 pounds on the Navarro website. The Orange had offered Moeolo on Oct. 7.

ANALYSIS: Moeolo joins Massachusetts offensive lineman Jayden Bass as the other OL commit in the 2023 cycle. He is the ninth commit in the class, joining fellow Syracuse commits Zyian Moultrie-Goddard, Jalil Smith, David Clement, Rashard Perry, Muwaffaq Parkman, Bryce Cohoon and LaNorris Sellers.

HERO: Moeolo addresses an area of need in the 2023 class. Though the Orange needs to be more selective with its class given the 2020 COVID eligibility rules, the versatile Moeolo can play a variety of positions on the offensive line and has the requisite size to compete in the ACC right away.

ZERO: Moeolo selected Syracuse over offers from Hawaii, North Alabama, Colorado State, Western Kentucky and Fresno State, among others. He had originally committed to Nevada in 2021.

WHAT’S NEXT: Other offensive linemen to keep in mind as the early signing period approaches includes Naquil Betrand, currently committed to Texas A&M and Isaiah Jatta, another JUCO from Snow (UT) College. The Orange may also attempt to flip defensive lineman and Florida commit Will Norman and Boston College defensive back Kahlil Ali, who was on hand for Syracuse’s game against Notre Dame this past weekend.

What Does Syracuse’s Bowl Outlook Like After Two Losses? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

Just a few weeks ago, there was chatter about Syracuse playing in a New Year’s Six Bowl or even the College Football Playoff. Somewhat unrealistic hope of the latter has been crushed after two straight losses to Clemson and Notre Dame. That being said, don’t think that SU still can’t find itself on national television come late December/early January.

Let’s clarify that last sentence by saying that playing on New Year’s Day like many of the glamorous college football schools do annually isn’t happening for anyone this year. The first day of 2023 falls on a Sunday, so the juggernaut that is the NFL will have the attention of football fans that day. As such, the typical New Year’s Six Bowls- Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Peach, and Fiesta- are spread out over December 30-31 and January 2.

We can cross the Peach and Fiesta Bowls off the list because those two are the sites of the College Football Playoff Semifinals this year. The Sugar Bowl always features an SEC foe facing a Big 12 team, while the Rose Bowl is Big 10 VS Pac-12 every year. So if the Orange are going to play in a New Year’s Six, it’ll either be the Cotton Bowl or (how appropriate) the Orange Bowl. The Cotton Bowl matchup fluctuates from year-to-year, but ACC teams don’t normally play in it. So we can more likely than not rule that one out. That leads us to the question. What needs to happen for Syracuse to earn an Orange Bowl appearance?

Orange you glad with 6 wins? SU football bowl watch is starting to sound cheesy (PS; Mink)

Syracuse’s New Year’s Six bowl chances took a hit after a non-conference loss to unranked Notre Dame sent the Orange tumbling in the national polls behind a pack of other ACC teams.

With injuries piling up, the margin for error the rest of the way is likely zero if SU wants to cap its season in Miami at the Orange Bowl.

Even if it loses out, SU is still assured a 13th game this season. By starting 6-0, the Orange wrapped up bowl eligibility two weeks ago.

But two-straight losses, and a tough November schedule, has dimmed the outlook for a major bowl berth.

See where national bowl prognosticators — and we — have the Orange playing this postseason.

Syracuse football: don’t lose sight of the big picture (TNIAAM; Wall)

It was a disappointing Saturday for the Syracuse Orange. A big crowd was on hand ready to push the Orange back into the win column and seven seconds into the game, Notre Dame was in the end zone for a lead they would never relinquish.

With a hobbled Garrett Shrader, Notre Dame was able to load up and stop the run and outside of a beautiful adjustment on his touchdown pass to Oronde Gadsden II, Shrader wasn’t able to make them pay.

Garrett Shrader to Oronde Gadsden for the score!

— Syracuse Football (@CuseFootball) October 29, 2022

Notre Dame took what worked for Clemson and rotated their three running backs to attack the middle of the Orange defense. On defense, the Irish bottled up Sean Tucker and made him work all afternoon. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson replaced Shrader in the second half and he showed some big-time arm strength as he lead two touchdown drives.

I have barely looked at comments because I left the game and spent the rest of the weekend enjoying beautiful Fall weather and time with family. It was disappointing to be in the Dome ready to celebrate a bit win over a high-profile program, but it wasn’t meant to be. That’s college football Suzyn. I’m not going to let that game take away from this 2022 season.

(youtube; podcast; Tortora & Alford)

Wake Up Call with Dan Tortora brings you an ALL-NEW "Tortora & Alford" where, this time, DT broke out the SOUND EFFECTS... Hear what teams are getting what as DT & Isaac Alford speak on the nation's current Top 25 in the AP & Coaches' Polls. The duo also spend ample time on the Orange at 6-2, the 41-24 loss to Notre Dame, having a road game vs. Pitt coming up, the rest of the schedule, & More!

Tale of the Tape (Syracuse) (247sports.com; $; Prister)

“It was really good to see this team battle. I had known going into the game that their backup quarterback was pretty good. Then I knew if he was going to play, he would be a challenge for us. He had some good plays out there but our defense kind of buckled down and finished the right way.

“The play, for me, that changed the game was when they started to get a little bit of momentum in the second half. They were down 14 with the ball and Marist (Liufau) intercepts the ball. We go down and score. That, to me, was the moment I said, ‘Okay, we’ve got it.’”

-- Marcus Freeman on Notre Dame’s 41-24 victory over Syracuse

• Kudos to the Irish for taking advantage of Syracuse’s defensive shortcomings and physically dominating while benefiting greatly from the less-than-100-percent Garrett Shrader to subdue the Orange in a 41-24 Irish victory.

It shouldn’t have been as close as it was when the Irish entered the fourth quarter leading just 24-17. After the Brandon Joseph pick-six to start the game, the Orange played the Irish to a 17-17 stalemate through the end of the third quarter. Notre Dame’s inability to follow through on drives and the defense’s weekly habit of allowing long touchdown drives kept Syracuse in the game.

OT: Thoughts on Big XII TV Contract (RX; HM)

OT: Thoughts on Big XII TV Contract

SBJ broke the news Sunday that the Big XII had agreed to a new TV contract with ESPN and Fox which, despite losing Texas and Oklahoma, represents a significant rights fee increase...

From EXTRA POINTS: Five quick thoughts about the Big 12's new TV deal, here are some of [Matt's] big takeaways, starting with the part I know you guys are most interested in - the money:

According to SBJ, the Big 12 has signed an extension with their current broadcast partners through the runs through 2030-31 season. According to their reporting, that extension is "worth a total of $2.28B, an annual average of $380M, according to sources."
Basically, this is a 6-year contract from 2025-26 through 2030-31. Typically, both ESPN and Fox start out a bit below average and gradually increase so that it finishes above average. A statement made in the SBJ article "Big 12 scores big win by renewing media rights deal with ESPN, Fox" supports that idea; it states that the Big XII...

...will see a 72.7% increase in the average annual value of its current deal, which started in 2012. The difference between the rights fee ESPN and Fox will pay from the last year of the old deal in 2024-25 and the first year of the new deal in 2025-26 is much more modest.

Looking Ahead to Week 11 + Black Friday (RX; HM)

Looking Ahead to Week 11 + Black Friday

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference and its television partners announced the following football game times and networks for Nov. 12.

Saturday, Nov. 12

Early

Virginia Tech at Duke, Noon, RSN
Pitt at Virginia, Noon, ACC Network
Notre Dame vs Navy (Baltimore), Noon, ABC

Mid-Day

Boston College at NC State, 3:30 p.m., ACC Network
Louisville at Clemson, 3:30 p.m., ESPN

Prime Time

North Carolina at Wake Forest, 7:30 p.m., ESPN2
Florida State at Syracuse, 8 p.m., ACC Network

All times are Eastern.
Compare to Matt's guesses: He had the Prime Time games exactly right, as well as the Notre Dame game. He got the time right for Louisville/Clemson, but not the network. As for the other four games, he had the networks right but the times were flip-flopped (Noon / 3:30pm). Not bad!

ACC Football Week 9 Reaction: UNC takes down Pitt | Syracuse destroyed by Notre Dame | Miami wins (youtube; podcast; ACC Takeover)

Dan and Ben are back to recap Week 9 in the ACC, where if you picked to enjoy a lovely Halloween outing with your family, you may be the smartest fan we know.

FSU football: ACC Power Rankings after week nine (chopchat.com; Hunt)

I had FSU football in the top half of my preseason ACC Power Rankings, and I feel like the way I’ve been on point with my takes regarding the rest of the ACC.

One of the biggest takeaways was Syracuse their second straight game. I said this stretch of NC State, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh would take its toll on them before they play FSU.

The surprise of the weekend was Louisville blowing out Wake Forest, but the Demon Deacon’s turned it over eight times, which isn’t sustainable.

Miami went to quadruple overtime against UVA before winning 14-12. The Hurricanes will welcome the Noles to Doak South as near +10 point underdogs.

North Carolina blew out Pittsburgh and has full control of the ACC Coastal.

Here are my updated rankings after eight weeks by division and then overall as a conference:

ACC Atlantic

  • Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC)
  • Wake Forest (6-2, 2-2 ACC)
  • Syracuse (6-2, 3-1 ACC)
  • NC State (6-2, 2-2 ACC)
  • FSU (5-3, 3-3 ACC)
  • Louisville (5-3, 3-3 ACC)
  • Boston College (2-6, 1-4 ACC)
ACC Coastal
  • North Carolina (7-1, 4-0 ACC)
  • Duke (5-3, 2-2 ACC)
  • Pittsburgh (4-4, 1-3 ACC)
  • Georgia Tech (3-5, 2-3 ACC)
  • Miami (4-4, 2-2 ACC)
  • Virginia Tech (2-6, 1-4 ACC)
  • Virginia (3-5, 1-4 ACC)

Overall Power Rankings

  1. Clemson
  2. Wake Forest
  3. Syracuse
  4. NC State
  5. FSU
  6. North Carolina
  7. Louisville
  8. Duke
  9. Miami
  10. Georgia Tech
  11. Pittsburgh
  12. Virginia Tech
  13. Virginia
  14. Boston College

Parting Thoughts

There wasn’t much for me to change from a rankings perspective. I want to move FSU above NC State and Syracuse, but that’s hard to do since Syracuse beat NC State and the latter beat FSU.

Work areas at TCGplayer headquarters in Syracuse are designed to look much like the world of the trading card games it sells. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

eBay acquires Syracuse’s TCGplayer, a growing trading card marketplace (PS; Moriarty)

Online auctioneer eBay Inc. on Monday completed its $295 million purchase of TCGplayer, a Syracuse company that operates one of the largest online marketplaces for trading card games.

“By joining forces with TCGplayer, eBay has even more ways to connect brick-and-mortar hobbyists and sellers with passionate collectors around the world,” said Dawn Block, vice president of collectibles at eBay. “Our two companies share similar values and a deep commitment to the collectibles community, and together we will continue delivering best-in-class experiences for our customers.”

The companies said TCGplayer will continue to operate autonomously, providing an online marketplace for people and comic book stores to buy and sell cards for games such as Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering. EBay announced in August it had agreed to purchase TCGplayer, which has its headquarters in downtown Syracuse.

TCGplayer employs more than 600 people and has made itself into a sort of eBay of the trading card market. It serves millions of hobbyist buyers and tens of thousands of online sellers and brick-and-mortar retailers, many of them comic book stores. The company emerged in 2008 from a web design company that Chedy Hampson, a 1992 Corcoran High School graduate, and Ray Moore, of Baldwinsville, started in 1998.

“I look forward to working with eBay to improve the collecting experience online and in everyone’s favorite local hobby store,” Hampson, CEO of TCGplayer, said in a statement. “We will benefit from eBay’s decades of industry experience, coupled with powerful technology solutions, a shared vision, common core values, and a deep commitment to the collectibles community.
