Welcome to National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day celebrates mixed breed dogs, and was created by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate, who also created days such as National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, and National Cat Day. The goal of the day is to embrace, save, and celebrate mixed breed dogs by creating awareness about the great numbers of them in animal shelters that are in need of a home. Mixed breed dogs make up the largest percentage of dogs that are abandoned and euthanized, and make up about 80% of dogs in shelters. In an effort to further raise awareness, National Mutt Day takes place on two days during the year. The hoped for result of the day is that people visit animal shelters and adopt a mixed breed dog, or possibly donate their time and money to shelters.

Syracuse football: what does the Orange’s final regular season resume look like? (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

Take a deep breath everyone.

Yes, we finally made it to the end of the Syracuse Orange football regular season, and finally on a lighter note with a 32-23 win over Boston College Saturday night. For the average fan out there, this season felt like getting off a Six Flags roller coaster on a full stomach.

Although there’s still a bowl game looming on the horizon, it’s time to take a look at Syracuse football’s 2022-2023 campaign in review. Specifically, now is a great opportunity to look at how the Orange performed relative to its schedule.

College football is all about the final “resume” at the end of the season. Who did you beat, and by how much? How well did you perform relative to expectations? Did you beat the teams you were supposed to beat and vice versa? All of this matters in the grand scheme of things.

This article will look to shine a magnifying glass on Syracuse’s schedule by the numbers, taking stock on if the Orange underperformed, overachieved, or played to consensus preseason expectations. Additionally, it will also contextualize the 2022 season within the program’s recent history, what went right (and wrong), final takeaways, and more.

Matt Bonaparte and Owen Valentine answer your questions from Twitter as the Syracuse Football regular season comes to a close at 7-5. What bowl might Syracuse find itself in? Who might opt out of the bowl game? What fixes need to be made before next season? All that and more on your Thursday episode of Locked On Syracuse.

Orange Weekly: 2022 Syracuse football review, can SU hoops get back on track? (video) (PS; podcast; Axe)

The Syracuse University football team is gearing up for its bowl game while the SU men’s basketball team is trying to save its season from going off the rails.

Syracuse.com’s Brent Axe discussed those two big issues and more on a new episode of “Orange Weekly” presented by Crouse Health.

Axe examines what Dino Babers and SU football did right to earn a 7-5 mark, what needs to improve going forward and tries to guess which bowl game the Orange will be selected for on Sunday.

As for basketball, there’s so much to clean up, where do you even start? Axe says if one key thing doesn’t get fixed soon, things will get much worse before they get better.

“Orange Weekly” streams live Thursdays at 12:00 p.m. (eastern) on Facebook and YouTube.

You can watch a replay of the show in the YouTube clip above.

Syracuse and former Beaver Falls Star Josh Hough Enters Transfer Portal (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Campbell)

Syracuse defensive lineman and former Beaver Fall star, Josh Hough, announced his entry into the transfer portal on Wednesday.

“I’d like to thank the Syracuse nation, my team and my family for supporting me during my journey into collegiate football and academics,” Hough wrote in a tweet. “After much prayer and conversation with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility remaining.”

Hough played for Beaver Falls from 2017-20 and starred as a running back, where he rushed for 4,378 yards. He played his best during his senior season in 2020, rushing 124 times for 2,048 yards and 27 touchdowns. Hough led his team to a WPIAL Class 2A final, where they defeated Sto-Rox for the fifth WPIAL title in Beaver Falls history.

For his play, Hough earned a slew of offers outside of Syracuse. This included MAC schools like Ball State, Kent State, Eastern Michigan and Buffalo, but he also received Power 5 offers from Kentucky and hometown Pitt.

He committed to Syracuse before his senior season and joined the team the following year. Hough started out as a running back but suffered an injury in camp that forced him to miss the season. He chose to move to the defensive line but did not see any playing time.

Hough still has three years left of eligibility to play. It would not be surprising to see schools come in for his services, either as a running back or on defense.

Football: Newburgh, vying for first state title, faces a highly-ranked opponent (yahoo.com; McMillan)

Newburgh Free Academy football coach Bill Bianco was asked if he had a “Hoosiers” movie speech ready for his team when the Goldbacks step into the cavernous JMA Wireless Dome on the campus of Syracuse University on Sunday.

“If you got one for me, just send it,’’ he laughed.

No tape measure is needed to demystify the 100-yard field, nor the gravity of the moment: Newburgh is vying for its first state title, having come up short in 2011 and 2014.

At 3 p.m., the Goldbacks (10-2) take on Section 6 champion Buffalo Bennett (6-6) for the Class AA title. Bennett is ranked No. 3 in the state and Newburgh is No. 4, the top two teams in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

ACC News

Report: Pitt One of Two ACC Teams in Consideration for Sun Bowl (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Ludwig)

If the memory of a 3-0 final score still wakes you up at night in a cold sweat, I’ve got some bad news.

According to a report from KTSM.com’s Colin Deaver, Pitt is one of the two ACC teams in consideration for playing in the 2022 Sun Bowl.

“In the Pac-12 there’s still some scenarios that could possibly happen, but I think it’ll come down to UCLA or Oregon State and in the ACC it’s Pittsburgh or Duke,” Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas told Deaver. “It’s looking like we’ll have at worst a 9-3 team from the Pac-12 and at worst an 8-4 team from the ACC which would be one of the best matchups we’ve had in years.”

The Sun Bowl is pitted between an ACC team, with it being the conference’s fifth choice bowl, and a Pac-12 team, which ranges from the conference’s fourth through eighth choice. The two teams that will play in this season’s Sun Bowl will be decided on Sunday following this weekend’s conference championships.

Of course, Pitt and the Sun Bowl have history.

Pitt’s first appearance in the Sun Bowl occurred back in 1975, a 33-19 win over Kansas in which Tony Dorsett, Eliot Walker and Robert Haygood each racked up 100 yards on the ground.

Holiday Bowl watch: Notre Dame-Oregon would be great matchup, but several possibilities remain (sandiegouniontribute.com; Kenney)

A top 25 matchup is all but assured for the 2022 SDCCU Holiday Bowl.

The game matches a team from the Pac-12 against an opponent from the ACC, which includes Notre Dame in its pool for bowl selection purposes.

Each conference has five teams ranked among the top 25 teams in the latest CFP rankings.

“We have some really good opportunities,” Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville said. “The Pac-12 had an up year and we’re going to get a really good, ranked team out of the Pac-12. No doubt about it.

“On the ACC side, the teams that are at the top are teams that fans would love to see. High scoring.”

The big question: What will be the matchup?

No. 21 Notre Dame (8-4) has been trending toward the Holiday Bowl for weeks now, though No. 9 Clemson, No. 13 Florida State or No. 23 North Carolina also remain in the picture from the ACC.

Similarly, No. 11 Utah appeared the top candidate from the Pac-12 to come to the Dec. 28 game that will be played at Petco Park for the first time.

That was before No. 16 Oregon (9-3) lost last week to No. 15 Oregon State (9-3).

A Notre Dame-Oregon matchup would probably prove most popular from a marketing standpoint.

Making that possibility a reality hinges on what happens in this weekend’s conference championship games.

The Pac-12 championship will be decided Friday night when Utah meets No. 4 USC.

Maye, UNC stand in way of Clemson's 7th ACC title in 8 years (apnews.com)

No. 24 North Carolina (9-3, 6-2 ACC, No. 23 CFP) vs. No. 10 Clemson (10-2, 8-0, No. 9), Saturday, 8 p.m. EST at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium (ABC)

FANDUEL COLLEGE LINE: Clemson by 7 1/2.

Series record: Clemson leads 38-19-1

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Clemson is seeking its seventh ACC championship in the last eight seasons. The Tigers won six straight titles (2015-20) before failing to reach the championship game last season. UNC has never won an ACC championship game, losing 45-37 to Clemson in 2015 in its only other appearance. The Tar Heels haven’t won the ACC title since 1980, well before the creation of a championship game. Clemson’s loss last week to in-state rival South Carolina likely killed any chance for the Tigers to reach the College Football Playoff.

KEY MATCHUP

UNC QB Drake Maye vs. Clemson’s secondary: There are some observers who believe the redshirt freshman warrants Heisman Trophy consideration, although the Tar Heels’ two losses to close the season have dampened that enthusiasm. Still, Maye is a dangerous threat and a QB who some pro scouts already believe has the potential to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Maye has thrown for 3,847 yards and 35 TDs to go along with 629 yards rushing and six TDs.

North Carolina: WR Josh Downs. He’s tied for sixth in the Bowl Subdivision ranks with 11 touchdown receptions despite playing two fewer games than every other player with at least 11 TD grabs. In one remarkable tear, Downs had a run of four straight 100-yard games with at least nine catches in each one – including a 15-catch game against Virginia and a huge game (11 catches, 154 yards, three touchdowns) in the division-clinching win at Wake Forest.

Clemson: RB Will Shipley has rushed for 1,092 yards, the first Tiger tailback to do that since Travis Etienne. Shipley also has 14 touchdowns, second in the ACC. He’s also the engine that makes the Tigers’ offense go. Shipley has rushed for 100 or more yards five times this year, including 132 in a 31-30 loss to rival South Carolina this past week. Shipley and Maye both played high school football in the Charlotte area.

UNC football vs. Clemson in ACC championship: Scouting report, score prediction (thetimesnews.com; Batten)

The last time North Carolina won an Atlantic Coast Conference football championship, Jimmy Carter was the U.S. president, there were no such things as cell phones or social media, and a defensive player named Lawrence Taylor was selected the league's player of the year.

Forty-one years have come and gone since that 1980 season when a Taylor-led UNC squad rolled through the ACC with a 6-0 record, finished 11-1 overall and ended ranked 10th in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. The only blemish on that team's record was an early November rout at Oklahoma (41-7).

North Carolina (9-3), the 2022 Coastal Division champion, will attempt to end that drought in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium when it faces Atlantic winner and 20-time league champion Clemson (10-2) in the ACC Championship game on Saturday (8 p.m., ABC).

“We are really excited about playing in the ACC championship game,'' UNC coach Mack Brown said this week. "It’s only the second time for us since the divisions were established in 2012. ... We are very very proud of these guys. So, they’ve done something that has only been done two times since we’ve had divisions, so I’m proud of them. Winning nine games here is important because we haven’t done that except one other time since 1997. So, these guys have accomplished a lot. Winning six games on the road and having a chance to play a great team like Clemson is something that is very important for us.''

2022 ACC Coach of the Year (RX; HM)

2022 ACC Coach of the Year

From the official ACC release of Thursday, December 1, 2022...

Duke’s Elko Voted ACC Football Coach of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Mike Elko has been voted the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm after leading the Blue Devils to eight regular-season wins and a tie for second place in the Coastal Division.
Elko was the overwhelming choice of a 65-member voting panel after Duke defied the ACC Kickoff preseason media poll that predicted a second-straight last-place division finish.
Under Elko’s watch, the Blue Devils immediately returned as contenders for the division title with a 5-3 league record and earned bowl eligibility with an 8-4 overall regular-season mark. The turnaround came one season after Duke posted a 3-9 overall record that included an 0-8 mark in ACC play.
Elko received the ACC Coach of the Year nod from 44 members of the voting panel, which consisted of 51 select media members and the league’s 14 head coaches. Florida State’s Mike Norvell followed with 18 votes.
Elko, who took the reins in Durham following two decades as a successful defensive coordinator at the collegiate level, became the first Duke head coach to win eight games in his first season since Fred Goldsmith did so in 1994 (8-4). Duke’s five ACC wins are the most for the Blue Devils since 2014, when the program earned a trip to the Sun Bowl.

Drawing shows a concept for a "vertiport" by VPorts, a Candadian company that aims to build 1,500 of them across the globe by 2045. The facilities will serve as bases for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, which will be capable of taking off and landing like helicopters but flying like planes.

New corridor linking Syracuse and Montreal could power industry of helicopter-like drones (RX; HM)

A consortium of international organizations has agreed to work together to create an air corridor for helicopter-sized drones to carry cargo -- and someday people -- between Syracuse and Montreal.

The consortium said this week it has signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an “advanced air mobility” corridor for the operation of commercial cargo transport operations using unmanned, electric-powered vertical take-off and landing aircraft, described as “large, helicopter-sized drones.”

The goal is to use the air space between Syracuse and Montreal to test and expand the use of these drones, which are being developed to carry cargo and eventually people for a few hundred miles on battery power.

Officials say these flying cargo ships -- which will be capable of carrying about as much as a delivery van -- could be used for mid-range deliveries between businesses, warehouses and suppliers. They could also be used to transport people between airports and other transportation facilities, according to the consortium.

For now, plans are for the aircraft to operate in a 260-mile corridor that stretches from an airport in the Montreal suburb of Mirabel to Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Approvals by the Federal Aviation Administration and Canadian aviation authorities will be required.

The consortium is being led by VPorts, a Canadian company that is making plans to build its first base for the new kind of aircraft in Mirabel. VPorts, which is based in Mirabel, says it aims to build and operate 1,500 landing and charging hubs, called “vertiports,” worldwide.
