Welcome to National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day!

On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Naval Station Pearl Harbor, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day remembers and honors the 2,403 citizens of the United States who lost their lives there that day. Veterans and citizens have commemorated the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor since it took place, but the day became an official observance when Congress designated the day with a joint resolution on October 3, 1984. The resolution authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States "to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities" and "to pledge eternal vigilance and strong resolve to defend this Nation and its allies from all future aggression." Accordingly, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5286 on December 4, 1984. Subsequent Congresses and presidents have passed resolutions and issued proclamations for the day. On the day, flags are flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died from the attacks. Events, including a commemoration ceremony, are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

ACC coaches jealous SU ended up in the Pinstripe Bowl. What makes it so coveted? (PS; $; Leiker)

In the 48 hours since Syracuse football received its bowl placement, Dino Babers has received numerous phone calls from ACC peers.

They’re jealous.

“You’re going to a great bowl,” they’ve told him.

The Orange heads to New York City later this month to play Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Since its inaugural game 12 years ago, which SU won, the bowl has become one of the most coveted postseason destinations for ACC teams.

Pinstripe Bowl executive director Mark Holtzman said during a press conference Tuesday that he and his colleagues had six schools in their pool of ACC options, and that all six called to say the Pinstripe Bowl was their first choice.

As New York’s only bowl game, it’s not a surprise Syracuse, New York’s only bowl-eligible team, was the ACC team the Yankees chose. Regional schools have appeared in seven iterations of the bowl.

SU also has a strong alumni contingent in NYC that has shown out in its previous two Pinstripe Bowl appearances, both of which were wins.

“It’s kind of been a magic carpet ride for Syracuse whenever they’ve played in our bowl,” Holtzman said.

Axe: Shrader’s commitment eases portal paranoia as QBs flee ACC (PS; $; Axe)

Next year was top of mind for Syracuse University football quarterback Garrett Shrader just as it was with several quarterbacks in the ACC on Monday.

The difference was Shrader spoke firmly and fondly about returning to Syracuse while a mass exodus occurred around him in the league at football’s most important position.

Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong, N.C. State’s Devin Leary, Georgia Tech’s Jeff Sims, Pittsburgh’s Kedon Slovis Boston College’s Phil Jurkovec and Clemson’s DJ Uiagalelei all entered the transfer portal on Monday.

It was an eye-opening quarterback retreat, even by the volatile standards of college football today, where surprise is a word that rarely holds meaning anymore.

Leary was the 2022 ACC preseason player of the year.

Gone.

Uiagalelei came to Clemson as the No. 1 pro-style QB recruit and a consensus five-star prospect.

Gone.

Jurkovec needed about 20 minutes to find a new home, at Pittsburgh, with his former offensive coordinator, after an impressive run at Boston College.

Slovis has already transferred once, from USC to Pitt, and is on the move again.

Gophers, Orange excited for NYC (kare11.com; Hall)

Minnesota and Syracuse will play each other in this year's Pinstripe Bowl, played at Yankee Stadium Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. Central.

"Our players are really excited. This is a once and a lifetime opportunity," said Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck. "A lot of our players have never been to New York City. They've never been to Times Square. They've never been in the experience they're about to embark on."

The Gophers will be the eighth different Big Ten Conference team to play in this bowl game in the last eight seasons.

"There is no place in the world like New York City on Christmas time," said Fleck.
The game will be played at iconic Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees.
"You're playing in New York. You're playing in the media capital of the world. Our fans will be there, you're playing in Yankee Stadium. It's as big a stage, as there is," said Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack.

"Being able to play in one of the most historic venues, one of the most iconic venues, truly is an honor," said Fleck.
A unique intersection of the Gophers and Orangemen's Pinstripe Bowl matchup is Minnesota Athletic Director Mark Coyle, who hired both P.J. Fleck at Minnesota and Dino Babers when he was at Syracuse back in 2015.

"The one thing that really stood out about Dino and Coach Fleck is they're even better people," said Coyle. "They're wonderful men with great character, I think there's a reason why you see them having so much success. They're both great, great football coaches, but even better people, and I'm excited to see the success that they both have."
"I'm glad that I don't have to learn the names of the athletic director or the other head coach, or practice saying that," said Babers.

The Biggest Needs in the Transfer Portal – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

The floodgates opened yesterday and the transfer portal has already gone crazy. If you were keeping up with live updates it seemed like there were bunches of players entering the portal every single minute. Some big names released announcements of their intentions to play football at other schools. To keep up with the marketplace here’s the link to the homepage: 2023 College Football Transfer Portal.

Syracuse has already lost some players to the transfer portal. The names include Courtney Jackson, Josh Hough, Tyler Magnuson, Dom Foster, and Anthony Queeley. More could be on the way as the offseason continues to play out, so stay updated right here with that.

That’s who SU lost, but what positions need to be filled with the transfer portal this offseason?

WIDE RECEIVER

Syracuse’s top pass catcher is back in Oronde Gadsden II. The “tight end” garnered All-ACC 1st team honors in 2022. Other than that, Jackson was SU’s wideout option one in the 2021 season but did little to nothing this year. Seventh-year senior DeVaughn Cooper was one of the other lone bright spots for the Orange but his eligibility has been exhausted.

Syracuse does bring back Damien Alford who really came on strong late in the season. Reserves like Trebor Pena, D’Marcus Adams, and Isaiah Jones (injured) figure to return as well.

SU had an issue with being one dimensional last year. Gadsden hauled in 54 receptions for 891 yards and six touchdowns. The next most prolific receiver was Cooper with his 29 catches for 376 yards and three scores. The Orange need more production next season and really should be begging for a wideout two option.

DEFENSIVE LINE

The most glaring need on the defensive side of the ball should be obvious at this point. Syracuse had opportunities to plug gaps last offseason and did not. There’s no excuse for not bringing anybody in this time around. SU was starting third-string players by the time the end of the season rolled around.

Terry Lockett should be back from injury next season, Caleb Okechukwu has one more season if he wants it, and Jatius Geer is ready for a potential breakout season.

If you’re Syracuse you should be attempting to build depth and maybe find a star in the rough. Can you find an FCS school with an unheralded player who wants to make the jump to FBS? SU has done it in the past with someone like Cody Roscoe. Hit the portal and fill needs in your defense.

Keeping Up With The 315 12-6-22 (ESPN; radio; The 315)

Brian Higgins starts the show assessing Syracuse football’s position in the transfer portal and what the team’s focus should be. Then, he recaps the weekend of picks from Mario Sacco and the Man Who Sort Of Knows. Later, producer Matt returns to give the 4-1-1 on Aaron Judge and where he’s been for the past week.

Syracuse football: what do the Oranges have to add to their list after the opening of the transfer portal? - Local News Today (localtoday.news; Murphy)

As the transfer portal swells to over 1,000 players, the Syracuse Orange will need to keep this list in mind as they prepare for the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.

To recap where things are right now, the Orange has the following players going through the portal:

WR: Courtney Jackson, Anthony Queeley, Dom Foster

OL: Tyler Magnuson

DL: Josh Hough

With the early signing day on December 21st, this is the list of current commits for 2023:

QB: LaNorris salesman

RB: Ike Daniels, Muwaffaq Parkman

WR: Bryce Cohoon

TE: David Clemens

OL: Jayden Bass, Lysander Moeleo – transfer from Navarro College

DL: Rashard Perry, Jalil Smith

LB: Zyian Moultrie-Goddard

It’s early days but Syracuse has been mentioned with some notable transfer targets in Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong (speculated Robert Anae and Jason Beck reunion) and Rhode Island OL Ajani Cornelius. Cornelius, like Jared Verse last season, is getting a lot of interest, but maybe the White Plains, NY native wants to play closer to home?

Another transfer of interest is Rochester native and UConn running back Nathan Carter.

UConn RB Nathan Carter has entered the transfer portal. He rushed for 405 yards for 6.2 yards per carry this year.
— 247Sports Transfer Portal (@247SportsPortal) December 5, 2022
It doesn’t appear to be an emergency position, but we all agree that the Orange could certainly use talent across the board, so it’s worth mentioning these players despite positions. Two NY players should certainly warrant at least a conversation.

Speaking of position needs, as collaborators we discussed the positions that Syracuse should focus on in the portal. We don’t have consensus, but we have all identified OL, DL, WR, LB and CB as areas to address.

ACC FOOTBALL: Louisville HC Scott Satterfield Heads to Cincinnati Bearcats; Transfer Portal Updates

Dabo Swinney takes victory lap on young talent at Clemson (on3.com; Graham)

Clemson
might not have lived up to the lofty standard of making the College Football Playoff, but winning an ACC championship is pretty solid. And after the game, head coach Dabo Swinney got to gush about the young talent that helped Clemson get back on top of the conference — and hopefully further next year.

From a pair of sophomore running backs to a true freshman starting at right tackle all year, Saturday night’s drubbing of North Carolina was a crowning achievement for these young players. And don’t forget true freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik fully coming into his own.

“It means our future’s bright, for sure,” Swinney said. “We’ve got a bright future.”

In his answer, Swinney ultimately named more than a half dozen players, none of them Klubnik — though it’s fair to take a moment and appreciate what the heralded quarterback prospect did against UNC.

Progress was Made but There is Still a Ways to Go for UNC Football | Carolina Blitz (carolinablitz.com; Hatchett)

After starting the season 9-1, the UNC Tar Heels season couldn’t have ended in a worse fashion. UNC ended their season on a three-game losing streak, the latest a 39-10 beat down from the Clemson Tigers. The game started out well for UNC as they scored on their opening drive after Clemson went three-and-out on their opening possession. Once the Tigers inserted quarterback Cade Klubnik into the game the mood of the Tigers changed and their offense got going. Klubnik completed his first ten passes and the Tigers’ defense was able to make big plays in the red zone. Coach Mack Brown acknowledged that the red zone has been an issue during UNC’s three-game slide. The Tar Heels were in prime position to make it a one-score game, but Drake Maye drew a costly pick-six and the game was pretty much over at that point.

Despite the 9-1 start, The Tar Heels showed signs that they weren’t quite ready to compete with a team like Clemson. First, the Heels gave up 40 points in a quarter against Appalachian State. They held on to beat an underwhelming Miami team, then were fortunate that penalties and a missed field goal kept them alive versus Duke for Maye to lead them down the field on the final drive of that game. Before the Georgia Tech game their only loss was to Notre Dame, who were just more physical than the Tar Heels. Losing at home to a 4-6 Georgia Tech team definitely took the wind out of UNC’s sails. The next week UNC would lose in double overtime to a NC State team that was battered at the quarterback position, but had a strong defense. Clemson was the first ranked opponent at the time that UNC played and they looked ill prepared for Cade Klubnik, despite Klubnik having packages in games before and Clemson fans calling for him for weeks now. Coach Mack Brown said that the Tar Heels struggled versus physicality and that will be an area to improve in.

Big 12 Championship Game Viewership Tops Pac-12, ACC (heartlandcollegesports.com; Clinton)

Television ratings for conference championship weekend have been released and it appears the Big 12 has some real staying power, even without Oklahoma or Texas.

The Big 12 Championship game between Kansas State and TCU drew an average of 9.41 million viewers, which ranks them third out of the conference games, just behind the SEC (10.89M) and Big Ten (10.70M).

Not only did the Big 12 rank third, it outdid the Pac-12 (5.97M) and ACC (3.47) by a wide margin. The Big 12 Championship’s 9.41M viewers was nearly more than the Pac-12 and ACC Championship games combined (9.44M) and it rating of 5.3 was more than both the Pac-12 (3.3 RTG) and ACC’s (1.9 RTG) ratings combined.

Wow, the Big 12 championship game had more viewers than the ACC and Pac-12 championship games combined. It was much closer to the SEC and B1G in viewership.

JMA Wireless planning $24M expansion, 40 more jobs at new 5G factory in Syracuse (PS; $: Moriarty)

JMA Wireless, a fast-growing maker of 5G equipment, is planning a more than $24 million expansion of a manufacturing site it opened in Syracuse’s South Side neighborhood just a few months ago.

The company has submitted plans to the city for a 100,000-square-foot logistics center adjacent to its $52 million 5G global headquarters on Cortland Avenue.

“The project will serve as the next step in the transformation of the downtown area, helping revitalize and reenergize a long-forgotten neighborhood that had not seen healthy investment in decades,” the company said.

The $24.4 million “Global Smart Logistics Center” will create 40 new jobs at the complex, which already employs 200 people a few blocks south of downtown, according to the company. As part of the project, JMA said it expects to transfer some out-of-state operations and jobs to Syracuse.

JMA said the logistics center will serve as the hub for all JMA materials moving across the U.S. and the world.

“JMA’s intent for the center is to bring additional jobs to the immediate South Side, improve the condition of the area, and serve as an anchor for emerging opportunities in the neighborhood and community,” the company said.
