Welcome to Abilities Day!

First celebrated in 1999, Abilities Day honors and celebrates people with disabilities and their caregivers. Disabilities can be invisible or visible, can be minimal or severe, and can affect people at any age or place in life. Caregivers labor hard to ensure that those with severe disabilities are comfortable and are able to live to their fullest. Many centers for independent living and hospitals have celebrated Abilities Day, and it has been marked by disability rights organizations such as ADAPT, AAPD, and NDP. Those taking part in the day show their solidarity by wearing white ribbons, or by placing them on Christmas trees and wreaths. The day was created by Paul Benjamin-Dielman Cannaday, an advocate for people with disabilities and the editor and owner of Disability Grapevine.

Ty Gordon's college plans were set. Then Syracuse beckoned. (insidenova.com; Fawcett)

Ty Gordon figured his college choice was set once he committed to Old Dominion University on July 27. ODU was the first school to offer a scholarship to the Battlefield High School senior defensive lineman and the one who showed the most interest in him from the start.

INSIDE NOVA

Gordon also wanted to make his decision before Battlefield opened practice for its 2022 season.

But everything changed for Gordon after two Syracuse University football assistants saw him play one of the best games of his life Oct. 7 against visiting John Champe.

Assistant coach Chip West, who recruits this area for the Orangemen, and defensive line coach Chris Achuff left impressed. The following week, Gordon said Syracuse offered him a scholarship.

The offer left Gordon conflicted. He viewed loyalty as the highest of character traits. And saying no to ODU seemed disloyal after all this time.

But he also felt he had to consider Syracuse. This was a Power Five program in the ACC that pursued Gordon heavily.

“My mom said you don’t want to go through life with a regret,” Gordon said.

SU picks up fifth transfer in ex-Missouri punter Jack Stonehouse (PS; Leiker)

Though most of the focus on Early National Signing Day was on high school and junior college commits, Syracuse football added a fifth transfer to its ranks.

Ex-Missouri punter Jack Stonehouse committed to SU, a tweet from one of the Orange’s recruiting staff members revealed.

Stonehouse comes from a family of punters including his dad, uncle and cousin, Ryan Stonehouse, who’s currently the punter for the Tennessee Titans.

He won the starting job at Missouri mid-season as a walk-on over a veteran teammate. Stonehouse visited the Salt City and received his scholarship offer this past weekend.

After a great official visit with @CuseFootball I am happy to announce that i have received a full-ride scholarship! Thank you coach @Coach_Lig @CoachBabersCuse @Coach_WillRod pic.twitter.com/As39dA8pTz
— Jack Stonehouse (@_JackStonehouse) December 18, 2022

Stonehouse is from West Hills, California, where he played at Chaminade High School. He was unranked in the class of 2021.

Syracuse leaned on freshman punter Max Von Marburg this season. The team finished 120th nationally in net punting (35.02 yards per attempt) under first-year special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky. Stonehouse will be the third scholarship punter on SU’s roster, joining Marburg and James Williams.

SU lands signing day commitment from linebacker Josiah Jeffrey (PS; Leiker)

Syracuse football picked up another class of 2023 commitment in the midst of Early National Signing Day.

Linebacker Josiah Jeffrey announced his commitment to the Orange on Wednesday morning. His addition is one of two signing day surprises for SU. The Orange also flipped Northern Illinois commit Trevion Mack on Wednesday.

Jeffrey played for Greenwood High School in Greenwood, South Carolina. The Eagles finished 6-7 this season, making it to the Sweet 16 of the South Carolina 4A state tournament before being eliminated.

— Josiah Jeffery (@JosiahJeffery8) December 21, 2022

Jeffrey was the region defensive player of the year, an All-South Carolina pick and a two-time All-Lakelands selection.

He was a team captain at Greenwood High School and made 71 tackles his senior season. Jeffrey also made one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and scored a defensive touchdown.

He is unranked on 247.

Jeffrey (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) is the third linebacker in SU’s current recruiting class, joining Zyian Moultrie-Goddard and Lonnie Rice. Both Moultrie-Goddard and Rice have already signed their letters of intent.

Where does Syracuse’s 2023 recruiting class rank in the ACC, nationally? (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football’s 2023 Early National Signing Day went mostly according to plan.

SU signed 15 high school and JUCO players Wednesday plus added five transfers. Two of those signees and one transfer — linebacker Josiah Jeffrey, offensive lineman Trevion Mack and punter Jack Stonehouse — were new additions to the class and hadn’t been previously committed.

Here are the rankings of Syracuse’s entire 2023 class from the three biggest recruiting sites:

  • 247 Sports: No. 14 ACC; No. 73 nationally
  • On3: No. 14 ACC; No. 78 nationally
  • Rivals: No. 14 ACC; No. 89 nationally
Only one verbal commit to Syracuse ended up flipping elsewhere.

Offensive lineman Vincent Carroll-Jackson, the No. 2 recruit in the class, signed to Nebraska. He committed to SU on Dec. 11 but took an official visit with the Cornhuskers five days later.

The Orange is still awaiting word on whether quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who’s been verbally committed to SU in March, will sign with the program. Sellers has been heavily pursued by South Carolina, his home state’s flagship, thanks to a stellar senior campaign that saw him win his school its first state title.

SU football commit flips to Nebraska on signing day (PS; Leiker)

Syracuse football couldn’t hang on to the No. 2 commit in its 2023 class, despite him verbally committing to the university just 10 days ago.

Vincent Carroll-Jackson, a three-star lineman from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, flipped his commitment during his signing day ceremony Wednesday afternoon, choosing Nebraska by sliding a red hat on his head.

“It’s official,” Carroll-Jackson said at the end of his signing day remarks. “Ya’ll are going to be seeing me a lot more on your TVs next year, I can guarantee that.”

Carroll-Jackson was the second-highest ranked high school player in SU’s class behind four-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who also has Orange fans worried about a potential decommitment.

After just one season playing football, Carroll-Jackson attracted a number of high-profile offers but seemingly latched on to the Orange early, announcing he was committing on Dec. 11, just six days after receiving his offer over the phone from defensive line coach Chris Achuff.

Carroll-Jackson (6-foot-5, 285 pounds) made an official visit to Syracuse on Dec. 9.

Sellers is expected to choose between Syracuse and South Carolina on Friday.

Trevion Mack Signs With Syracuse, Flips From Northern Illinois (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has flipped another class of 2023 prospect. Saint Paul (MN) Irondale offensive lineman Trevion Mack signed with the Orange after being committed to Northern Illinois since August. Mack officially visited Syracuse this past weekend, and that was enough to earn his signature during the early National Signing Day.

Mack is listed at 6-5, 295 pounds and could play guard or tackle at the next level. Mack is part of a large contingent of offensive lineman Syracuse has added to its roster this cycle. He joins junior college prospects J'Onre Reed and Lysander Moeolo as well as high school prospect Jayden Bass. In addition, Syracuse has hit the transfer portal for additional held, landing a commitment from Richmond transfer Joe More. The Orange could pursue other transfers as well.

It has been an offseason of change for Syracuse, which has lost both of its coordinators in the last week. Robert Anae took the offensive coordinator job at NC State while Tony White left to be Nebraska’s defensive coordinator. The Orange named Jason Beck its new offensive coordinator and Rocky Long its new defensive coordinator.

Wyncote Linebacker Turns Orange, Signs with Syracuse (montco.com; Weckerly)

Syracuse University’s football team has obtained Wyncote native Lonnie Rice in an early signing-day acquisition of the linebacker. Emily Leiker reported the school’s new asset for syracuse.com.

Rice — a six-foot, 220-pound junior college prospect — graduated from the now-closed Bishop McDevitt High School in 2020.

He originally enrolled at the University of Buffalo but transferred to Lackawanna Community College, where he played for the Falcons.

While at the community college, Rice battled through ten games, amassed 39 total tackles, sacked a QB 4.5 times, forced one fumble, recovered two fumbles forced by teammates, and broke up two passes.

He signed with the Orange on Dec. 12.

He is the third junior-college player (and the second linebacker) that Syracuse University added to its 2023 recruiting class.

More on Montgomery County’s Lonnie Rice is at syracuse.com.

Syracuse’s Class of 2023 Early Signing Day Offensive Commits – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

Christmas has come four days early for college football recruiting fanatics. Early signing day is upon us, and you can rest assured SU has already been busy. To help kickstart The Fizz’s coverage today, let’s take a look at the current state of things on the offensive side of the ball.

RB IKE DANIELS

Boy is Daniels’ commitment timely with a certain Syracuse running back declaring for the NFL Draft a few days ago. The Virginia native has an opportunity to emerge as LeQuint Allen’s primary backup to start next season, and his resume speaks for itself. SU had to beat the likes of Penn State, Michigan State, South Carolina, and Pittsburgh to secure Daniels’ services. That says quite a lot, doesn’t it? But he may not be the only new running back headed for the Salt City.

RB(?) MUWAFFAQ PARKMAN

The question mark sits beside Parkman’s position because he played both running back and safety in high school, and there is currently no clarity on which he will play in the 315. Regardless, the versatility the 3-star from New Jersey has from playing both positions will be invaluable and provide depth at the running back position, especially with Sean Tucker departing.

OT JAYDEN BASS

Similarly to Daniels and Parkman with running backs and Tucker, the importance of offensive tackles only increased as a result of Matthew Bergeron declaring for the NFL Draft. Bass had over 20 offers, including one from Arizona State, but wound up picking the Orange. The Springfield, MA native had a strong performance at a Syracuse camp, which sparked interest in the first place. But he’ll have competition at his position within his own class.

OT LYSANDER MOEOLO

Moeolo’s case is an interesting one. The Washington native spent his 2022 season at Navarro College, a JUCO in Corsicana, Texas about an hour self of the DFW metro. It’s interesting in that Moeolo already has a year of competition that isn’t high school under his belt. It’s not necessarily the highest competition, but it adds a unique background to this team that could help out down the line.

Duke football signs 26 new Blue Devils to punctuate Elko's first recruiting cycle (dukechroniclel Hurewitz)

Twelve games in the books. A bowl game in the coming days. After seeing unmatched success in the first year of the Elko era, the future leaders of the program put pen to paper Wednesday to commit to the Blue Devils.

Head coach Mike Elko brought in 26 new signees on National Signing Day as he cements his mark on the program with his first complete recruiting cycle. The 2023 class comes in as the No. 51-ranked class in the country and 10th in the ACC as Elko looks to continue Duke’s rise on the national stage.

“It's 26 kids that will forever be very special to me,” Elko said. “This will forever be the class that first committed to me as a head football coach. And so for the rest of my career, these guys will always be first, and all 26 of them committed prior to me ever coaching a football game as a head coach.”

The class includes six defensive backs, six defensive linemen and four wide receivers to go along with three offensive linemen, two linebackers, two tight ends, two running backs and a quarterback. Ten of the 26 are slated to enroll for the spring semester to begin coursework and participate in spring practice.

Nine of the signees also visited Duke in January 2022. Elko pointed out Wednesday that “in our first three weeks on the job, we were able to identify a third of this recruiting class.”

He also took pride in the fact that none of the Blue Devils’ August commits defected: “On August 1, we had 26 kids committed to Duke and today we signed 26 kids, the same 26 kids,” Elko said.

Unpacking NC State football 2023 recruiting class: How much can signees help in near future? (fayobserver.com; Thompson)

NC State football’s 2023 early signing day period began Wednesday with little drama but with plenty of potential talent for the future.

The Wolfpack had 18 high school prospects sign letters of intent, giving them the No. 34 recruiting class in the country, according to 247Sports Composite rankings, and the seventh-best class in the ACC behind Miami, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, Louisville and Virginia Tech.

This is coach Dave Doeren’s strongest class since 2019 when the Wolfpack finished with the 33rd-ranked class that included a future first-round pick, left tackle Ikem Ekwonu.

Here are the biggest takeaways from NC State's early signing day.

Pack holds tight to Daemon Fagan

Despite a late push from Ohio State, the Wolfpack were able to sign safety Daemon Fagan, a four-star prospect from American Heritage High School in south Florida. Fagan is the 27th-ranked safety prospect in the country and the 59th overall prospect from the state of Florida.

He was the final player to sign on Wednesday.

His 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame, speed and instincts could allow him to make an early impact as a freshman. He was NC State’s highest-rated recruit from the 2023 class.

Okay, let's get started ...

***THE BASICS***

Total commits:
17 entering Wednesday.

How many can NC State sign in the 2023 class?: This number is still very fluid, especially with the State focusing heavily on the transfer portal.

How many will sign Wednesday? 17. However, I don't expect Tamarcus Cooley to sign with the Pack. But I believe State is the heavy favorite for Florida offensive line Rico Jackson.

Miami, Notre Dame and Clemson continue to recruit at a very high level. Florida State had a decent Early Signing Day - but it's supplemented by good mining of the Transfer Portal.
As you can see from the second column, most ACC schools slipped a little in their national rankings since Monday. Exception were NC State, which moved up one spot, Pitt, which moved up 4 spots, and Syracuse, which moved up 14 spots (and almost within the Top 65 - almost).
Here are the changes from Monday in terms of total commits, 5-star, 4-star, and 3-star commits:

TeamTotal5*4*3*

The only ACC team to gain a blue-chip player was Miami, who actually gained a pair of 4-star players on Signing Day. Most of the extra players signed were 3-star or less; Pitt and Georgia Tech both signed last-minute hauls of 3-star players, for instance.

Miami

So it seems, whatever head coach Mario Cristobal wanted in the 2023 class he got. The group is impressive with three five-stars and 15 four-stars. In the days leading up to the Early Signing Period, Miami landed four-star end Rueben Bain, five-star offensive tackle Samson Okunlola and Mark Fletcher. The feather in the hat was keeping Okunlola and Fletcher away from in-state rival Florida.
Miami is not finished yet. The Hurricanes' class is slotted at No. 6 with a chance to break into the top five. Signing four-star corner Damari Brown would be yet another big win for this coaching staff.

Note: Miami is currently ranked 3rd in the 247Sports Team Recruiting ranking. - Hokie Mark

Dinner from Decir Algo, Syracuse, NY

The carnitas taco on a corn tortilla with salsa verde from Decir Algo, Syracuse, NY (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)

Decir Algo cranks out burritos and tacos from another restaurant’s kitchen (Dining In Review) (PS; $; Paventi)

Decir Algo is a restaurant within a restaurant; a ghost kitchen within Danny’s Steaks in Armory Square that cranks out quesadillas, burritos and tacos for takeout and delivery.

There were plenty of tacos in the delivery order and, I’m happy to say, all of them fared well on the 20-minute delivery ride from downtown to our Onondaga Hill home. Most of them fall under the build-your-own model ($4): pick your protein, tortilla and salsa. Our pork taco with salsa verde on a corn tortilla sat perfectly in the to-go container awaiting its demise, never shifting from its seat from the time it left the restaurant to when it hit our table.

The slow-cooked pork shoulder was tender and stringy with a fatty flavor to it like the traditional preparation of carnitas. The tomatillo- and cilantro-based green salsa was herbaceous and earthy, while a sprinkle of cotija cheese added salty notes. It contrasted the less-traditional smoked brisket taco packaged alongside it; a flour tortilla held a couple of beef brisket slices that were topped with barbecue sauce and red onions. We didn’t get too much smoke from the brisket, but it was juicy and didn’t taste as if it had sat around in a hot hold all day.

The birria tacos ($12 for three) were a highlight, though don’t confuse them with the birria queso taco you might get in Tijuana or Canastota. The traditional birria queso taco starts with birria de res, a savory stew of fatty beef, usually shoulder, smoky chiles, tomatoes and spices. Corn tortillas are grilled and splashed with the cooking liquid, or consommé. Shreds of beef are loaded into the tortilla along with stringy Oaxaca cheese, folded and grilled until the cheese melts and binds everything.
