Welcome to National Pi Day!

Pi Day celebrates the pi symbol (π) and its importance to mathematics. The symbol is a Greek letter, and it is used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The first digits of this ratio are 3.14159, and the number continues infinitely without pattern. It has been calculated to over one trillion digits after the decimal point. Most calculations only need the first few digits. Even the spherical volume of the whole universe can be calculated by using just 39 digits after the decimal point. The symbol "π" was first used in 1706 by William Jones. It gained in popularity after being used by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737. The first large and official celebration of the day took place at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. It was organized by Larry Shaw, a physicist at the Exploratorium. At the inaugural event, people marched around a circular space and ate fruit pies. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution supporting Pi Day.

Section III football schedule 2023: 7 things to know (PS; $; Lacy Jr)

Section III released the 2023 football schedule last week and there will be a few things to keep your eye on next fall.

Cicero-North Syracuse and Christian Brothers Academy rematch

Class AA-1 has just six teams, and every team will play one another, but the game that most have circled on the schedule is the Week 5 matchup between CBA and Cicero-North Syracuse. Last season’s regular-season game between the Brothers and Northstars was an instant classic that came down to a two-point conversion play in the final minute of the fourth quarter, with CBA ekeing out the win. The two later met in the Class AA championship, where C-NS claimed its fifth straight Section III championship.

Tough stretch for AA newcomer

Fayetteville-Manlius is new to Class AA, and it won’t be easy for last season’s Class A finalist.

The Hornets will face a challenging two-game stretch at the end of September when they take on CBA and C-NS in consecutive weeks. On top of having to face both section finalists back-to-back, F-M will have to do it on a short week. The team will take on CBA on Friday, Sept. 22, and then take one C-NS on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Utica Proctor has a similar situation. The Raiders will close the season with games against CBA on Saturday, Oct. 14, and C-NS on Friday, Oct. 20.

Longtime rivalry put on pause

Utica Proctor and Rome Free Academy is one of the longest-running football rivalries in America and is highlighted by the Great American Rivalry Series annually. With RFA’s move to the AA/A-2 division this season, that game is currently not on the schedule for the 2023 season. This season will mark just the third time the teams have not played since 2002. The previous two times were in 2015 and 2002.

Assistant coach departing Maryland football staff for ACC school (247sports.com; Ermann)

After Mike Locksley's most recent round of hires, it seemed like the turnover on the Maryland football staff might be done for the offseason. But another new face will be required after running backs coach Elijah Brooks announced his departure for the same job at Virginia Tech on Monday.

"From the bottom of my heart, my family and I want to thank Terp Nation, coaches, players and fans for a wonderful 4 years!" he wrote on Twitter.

Brooks, a local native, has recruited P.G. County for Locksley and coached running backs at Maryland since Locksley hired him in December 2018 after he served as head coach at local power DeMatha, where Brooks starred as a running back in high school. He's the fourth coach to depart since the season ended, following offensive coordinator Dan Enos (Arkansas), tight ends coach Mike Miller (Charlotte) and safeties coach Wes Neighbors (Ole Miss).

3 keys for Clemson football's cornerbacks improving pass defense in 2023 season (greenvilleonline.com; Long)

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney set a clear goal for the Tigers' defense at the start of spring practice last week: improve its pass defense.

The Tigers' defensive backfield struggled at times last season, finishing 76th in FBS in passing yards allowed. Opposing passers had a 61.2% completion rate, tied for the third-highest rate in the ACC.

Crucial to efforts to improve are Clemson's cornerbacks. Special teams coordinator and corners coach Mike Reed spoke after practice Monday, saying he expects this year's group to be more consistent in an effort to improve.

"The bar and the standard here is high, and kids understand it when they come here," Reed said. "They want to win championships, and when you don't get to what you really want, you've got to come back and you've got to fix it."

Here are three keys for Clemson's corners in their effort to solve the Tigers' secondary woes.

Nate Wiggins can take a step forward

Nate Wiggins is coming off his best season. He had the highest coverage grade of any returning defensive back according to Pro Football Focus, and he was credited with a team-high 12 pass breakups in 2022. Reed thinks his leading corner can be even better as a junior in 2023.

Realignment roundtable: Next steps, Notre Dame and unrealistic relegation dreams (ESPN; Staff)

We're getting closer and closer to seeing major changes in college football. Houston, Cincinnati, UCF and BYU are all set to enter the Big 12 on July 1. And in the summer of 2024, we'll see Oklahoma and Texas join the SEC and UCLA and USC will head to the Big Ten.

With those moves set in stone, and surely more to come soon, our reporters discuss what the future of realignment might look like in college football and give their wildest wishes for the sport.
_end_rule.png

What's the next domino to fall?

Bill Connelly: The next logical move will come when the Pac-12 figures out the valuations for its next set of media contracts. If it's competitive enough to what the Big 12 has arranged to pull in, then one assumes the Pac-12 will add two programs -- with San Diego State and SMU being the rumored front-runners (and UNLV, Boise State and others still hoping for a shot) -- and everything will potentially stabilize for a bit. If the Pac-12's estimates end up far short of expectation, then I guess we'll find out exactly how serious the Big 12 is about potentially adding the Colorado-Utah-Arizona-Arizona State quartet of programs. Looming over all of this, of course, is whether the Big Ten decides to expand past 16 programs and add whatever combination of Oregon, Washington, Cal and Stanford is most attractive. But since the Big Ten doesn't even have a commissioner or a full set of college presidents at the moment, we'll hold off on wondering about that.

Will the SEC expand past 16? (RX; HM)

Will the SEC expand past 16?

I know a lot of FSU fans want it to happen, but the question should be: willthe SEC expand further? From "Late Kick Live Ep 369: SEC Not Expanding" by Josh Pate:

Late Kick Live Ep. 369 includes Josh Pate reacting to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s comments about any future expansion plans. With the addition of Texas and Oklahoma in the near future, will there be any other movement from College Football’s premiere conference? What will this mean for the rest of the sport? (plus more)

Quotes from Greg Sankey:

"We [the SEC] were approached by Oklahoma and Texas..."
"We were focused on growing to 16..."
"I'm not a recruiter... we respect our colleagues..."
"We need a time of settling and... collaboration..."

Josh's Conclusion: The SEC is sitting still for awhile because it doesn't need to expand further.

College football recruiting: Breaking down top commitments from past week (3/06) (saturdayblitz.com; Peterson)

A slew of quarterback commitments lead the way in terms of the most important college football commitments over the past week.

The action has started to pick up in the month of March on the college football recruiting trail. The dead period ended at the beginning of the month and with recruits getting back on campus, it has led to a number of commitments.

Purdue was a big winner last week in college football recruiting and it’s because the Boilermakers landed four-star quarterback Marcus Davila, who is ranked 316th overall in the 2024 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

Davila is the 20th-ranked quarterback in the 2024 college football recruiting class. He’s out of Texas and is a really nice piece for the Boilermakers and gives them a potential QB1 for the future.

There were a couple of other quarterback commitments this past week and one of them went to Mississippi State as the No. 21 QB in the 2024 class, Josh Flowers pledged to the Bulldogs. He’s ranked 323rd overall and is the first ranked commitment in the class for Mississippi State.

QB Whit Muschamp is ranked 756th overall in the 2024 college football recruiting class and committed to Virginia. His ranking is lower (52nd among QBs) but he’s still ranked as a solid three-star and offers some developmental potential. He threw for over 3,000 yards and had 29 touchdown passes. His dad is also Will Muschamp.

CNY now facing 20-plus inches of heavy snow, 40 mph winds as state of emergency declared (PS; Dowty)

Central New York could be blanketed by a foot and a half of snow, with higher elevations getting more than 20 inches, during a storm that will hit Monday evening and carry over into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast for the Syracuse area -- and the state in general -- has worsened over the past few hours. The governor has issued a state of emergency beginning at 8 p.m. Monday night for the vast majority of Upstate New York.

The weather service warned of heavy snow that could make travel nearly impossible at times. Snowfall could come at 1 to 2 inches per hour. Winds are expected at 40 mph.

The new forecast is higher than the 10 to 16 inches predicted earlier Monday by the weather service.

The state of emergency includes a ban on tandem and empty tractor trailers on the Thruway between Syracuse (Interstate 81 interchange) and the Hudson Valley (I-87).

“The forecasted snow totals for this winter storm keep increasing, and the weight of the snow combined with 45 mph wind gusts will almost certainly bring down tree branches and power lines,” state emergency services commissioner Jackie Bray said in a news release. “New Yorkers should plan for two to three days straight of hazardous winter weather starting tonight.”

The worst weather is expected in the Capital and Hudson Valley regions east of Syracuse, with up to three feet of snow and 45 mph winds.

Syracuse native becomes Sports Illustrated Swimsuit rookie at 40: ‘I can’t fully believe it’ (PS; Herbert)

A model and wellness guru from Syracuse, N.Y., is making her debut in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

Cicero-North Syracuse High School graduate Melissa Wood-Tepperberg appears in a bikini for the magazine as a 2023 SI Swim “rookie.” At age 40, she’s one of the oldest rookies in the annual publication, which highlights models, athletes and celebrities posing in sexy swimwear at exotic locales around the world.

“It feels so beyond incredible to be a Sports Illustrated rookie,” Wood-Tepperberg told the publication. “I can’t fully believe it, but then I can believe it because I’m here and I’m doing it, and it just feels phenomenal.”

Wood-Tepperberg moved to New York City two decades ago, working at a Chanel counter at Bloomingdales and as a cocktail waitress at Marquee before finding success as a model and actress, even appearing in an episode of “30 Rock.” She married famed Tao Group club owner Noah Tepperberg in 2016 — celebrity guests at the wedding reportedly included Paris Hilton, Adrien Brody, Pauly Shore, Busta Rhymes, Mario Lopez, Tiesto and former Syracuse basketball star-turned-international DJ Rony Seikaly — and they now have two children.

Wood-Tepperberg is best known today as the founder and CEO of Melissa Wood Health, a fitness and wellness brand that began in 2015 with workout videos filmed in her living room and shared on Instagram. She soon gained 1 million followers and launched a MWH app in late 2019 that exploded during the Covid pandemic, now boasting more than 100,000 subscribers paying $9.99 a month (or $99 a year) to access her classes and tips on meditation, diet and exercise.

“Melissa blows me away both personally and professionally,” SI Swimsuit editor-in-chief MJ Day said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited.”
