Welcome to National Twilight Zone Day!

Today we celebrate the anthology television series The Twilight Zone. It is unclear why the show is celebrated on May 11, as there is no apparent connection between the date and the show. During its 5-season run, the series was both popular with fans and became critically acclaimed.

The Twilight Zone premiered on October 2, 1959, on CBS. It was created by Rod Serling, who not only came up with its concept and wrote or co-wrote 92 of its 156 episodes but also hosted and narrated it. It was one of the first science fiction series, and also had elements of suspense, horror, psychological fiction, drama, and fantasy. Serling combined his love of pulp fiction novels with topics that weren't often addressed on television at the time: social issues such as war (including nuclear), McCarthyism, and racism. In the opening of each episode, characters were transported to another dimension—the fifth dimension—which was called "the Twilight Zone." There they dealt with many unusual events, and the show often had a surprise ending with a moral lesson.

2023 JUCO defensive back Jakobie Seabourn is set to take an official visit to Syracuse this upcoming weekend. Seabourn can’t wait to get on campus and learn more about the Orange football program.

“I'm very excited to visit Syracuse this weekend,” Seabourn said. “I've never been to New York and on top of that I'm getting the chance to go visit a very possible landing spot for me, so I’m excited to see everything Syracuse has in store.”

Seabourn has played the last two seasons at Santa Barbara City College. He has been following Syracuse and believes the team has a lot of potential this season and moving forward.

“I think Syracuse's football program is getting ready to shake things up,” Seabourn said. “Most people are writing them off, but I can tell they are just a few pieces away from making a push at an ACC championship. Overall the Syracuse football program has a ton of great history and is a great program making strides for great future success.”

Seabourn is a six-foot-three, 205-pound versatile defensive back, who played a lot of safety last season at Santa Barbara, but also has experience as a cornerback. He believes he can make an instant impact if he ends up committing to Syracuse.

“Opportunity to come in and compete for a spot and also the opportunity to play on a big stage,” he said. “I live and dream for the big moments, so getting a chance to make plays and compete in a great conference like the ACC would be huge.”

Torrence gets to keep his options open after decommitting. Babers does, too (PS; $; Leiker)

A week after Syracuse football commit Syair Torrence received an offer from Michigan State, SU coach Dino Babers called him:

If Torrence wanted to look at other schools, it was going to be best for both sides if he decommitted.

Speaking to syracuse.com Tuesday, Torrence said the conversation left him “very emotional” and unsure of what to do.

He called Babers back Friday with his decision and announced it publicly on Saturday via Twitter: He was no longer committed to the Orange’s 2024 recruiting class.

Torrence said he was not planning to decommit prior to that call from Babers, even in the wake of the recent offer from and a scheduled official visit to Michigan State.

Bruce Williams, an SU alum who’s now the offensive coordinator at Christian Brothers Academy, said he didn’t know the full extent of the conversation between Torrence and Babers, but said it seemed to be one of understanding and respect.

“Coach (Babers) understands the recruiting landscape and doesn’t want to hold a kid that wants to see other options,” Williams said. “He’s one of those coaches. I think we all know him as a fair person. (Torrence) thought that he was missing the recruiting process and that it was best for him.”

A former Syracuse football linebacker has received a call up to the NFL from the Washington Commanders.

Lakiem Williams, who played for the Orange from 2018-19, has been invited to the Commanders training camp. He’s spent the past season playing for the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL, and the football league announced the news in a thread of call ups on Twitter.

Williams went undrafted in 2020, played briefly for the CFL’s Ottowa Redblacks in summer of 2021 and then spent time on both the Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints practice squads.

The Analytics Love Garrett Shrader (orangefizz.net; Simone)

Garrett Shrader has, and has seemingly always had, a “yeah, but” included in every conversation about him since he became Syracuse’s starting quarterback. In 2021, it was he can run. Yeah, but he can’t throw. In 2022, it was he performed well against teams that were as good as or worse than Syracuse. Yeah, but what did he do against tougher competition?

Both of which were certainly fair. A 53% completion percentage, 6.2 yards per attempt and just nine passing touchdowns shouldn’t have inspired much confidence two years ago. Last season, games like UConn, where Shrader completed 20/23 passes for 292 yards with three touchdowns, gave the impression that Syracuse had a real answer at quarterback for the first time in five years.

Then, there were games like Florida State in which he completed just six passes for 65 yards, albeit while dealing with an injury, but even NC State where he barely cracked 200 yards and threw two interceptions.

The analytics, however, love Shrader. Pro Football Focus gave him a grade of 86.1, which incorporates his skillset as a passer and a runner. That’s the 10th best out of all returning quarterbacks in the country, and third best in the ACC behind North Carolina’s Drake Maye, a projected top-2 pick in next year’s NFL Draft, and Florida State’s Jordan Travis.

Giants Radio Network host Lance Medow joins Brian Higgins to discuss what has been released from Big Blue’s 2023 schedule so far, his thoughts on the team’s offseason, the likelihood of former SU QB Tommy DeVito staying on the roster, and more.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/recruiting/michael-thomas-reacts-to-syracuse-offer (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2025 Toms River (NJ) Donovan Catholic wide receiver Michael Thomas recently picked up an offer from Syracuse. The Orange joined an offer list that includes Boston College, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State, West Virginia and others.

"Coach Nunz came to the school to talk to me," Thomas said. "He said, 'you're a special kid. You put in a lot of work and it shows. Many coaches say great things about me.' It's always good to hear when coaches say nice things. Also shows they see the hard work I put into my game, but I will always remain humble."

This was not the first time Thomas had heard from Syracuse. He has spoken with Orange coaches before, and visited last October.

"The game was amazing," Thomas said. "The crowd was so into it. Definitely was great to be there."

Ranking every ACC football team's 2023 non-conference schedule: Where does Clemson rank? (greenvilleonline.com; Keepfer)

ACC football teams will play 25 non-conference games against Power 5 opponents during the 2023 season, including six games against “scheduling partner” Notre Dame.

Clemson football hosts the Fighting Irish on Nov. 4, marking the fifth game between the teams in the last six years, but the first at Clemson since 2015. The Tigers round out their non-league schedule with games against South Carolina, Florida Atlantic and FCS foe Charleston Southern.

Each ACC team will play four non-conference opponents in 2023 and 13 of the 14 league teams will play an FCS opponent.

ACC teams also will play 11 games against teams ranked in last season’s final AFCA Coaches Poll.

Here’s how the ACC non-conference schedules stack up, from easiest to most challenging:

14. Miami

The Hurricanes will not face a single opponent that posted a winning record in 2022. Enough said. Opponents: Miami, Ohio (6-7), Texas A&M (5-7), Temple (3-9), Bethune-Cookman (2-9)

13. Boston College

BC is the only team in the league that won’t face a Power 5 team in non-conference play, but the Eagles best beware of Holy Cross, the FCS runner-up last year. Opponents: Holy Cross (12-1), Army (6-6), UConn (6-7), Northern Illinois (3-9)

12. Duke

Duke was a big surprise last season, winning nine games, and with their toughest non-conference test of 2023 a home game against Notre Dame, the Blue Devils could be on the road to nine wins again. Opponents: Notre Dame (9-4), UConn (6-7), Lafayette (4-7), Northwestern (1-11)

11. Syracuse

Syracuse jumped out of the gate 6-0 in 2023 before running into Clemson; this non-conference slate could have the Orange at 4-0 before hosting (you guessed it) Clemson. Opponents: Purdue (8-6), Army (6-6), Western Michigan (5-7), Colgate (3-8)

10. Wake Forest

Elon, Vanderbilt and Old Dominion should provide the Demon Deacons with a 3-0 start for a third straight year. Opponents: Notre Dame (9-4), Elon (8-4), Vanderbilt (5-7), Old Dominion (3-9)

ACC football: Win total projections released for every team ahead of 2023 season (247sports.com; Bahns)

The ACC should feature an intriguing conference title race in 2023 with perennial favorite Clemson leading the way, Florida State trending sharply upward, North Carolina boasting one of the nation’s best quarterbacks, Miami finding immense amounts of recruiting success and a handful of other teams hoping to play spoiler. Caesars released projected win totals for each of the conference’s 14 teams, outlining which squads might be in the mix for a league crown.

Only two teams in the ACC – Clemson and Florida State – put together 10-win seasons a year ago, but multiple others knocked on the door with eight or nine victories. Las Vegas’ win totals for this fall suggest the conference could again struggle to feature more than one or two national contenders.

Still, there exists plenty of upside for a number of the conference’s teams, and at the very least, good value with regard to betting on some of the win totals.

Get offseason and recruiting intel on your favorite college team for $1 for first month.

Below are Caesars’ 2023 projected win totals for every team in the ACC.

VIRGINIA CAVALIERS: 3.5

(Photo: Ryan M. Kelly, Getty)
In the wake of tragedy within the program, Virginia canceled the final two games of its 2022 season and thus finished year one of the Tony Elliott era with a 3-7 record across 10 contests. With a full slate of games awaiting them this fall, the Cavaliers have a good shot of eclipsing that win total from a year ago, but pulling themselves out of the ACC’s basement remains a challenge as Elliott embarks on his rebuilding project.

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS: 4.5

As the interim head coach for the final eight weeks of the 2022 season, Brent Key led the Yellow Jackets to a 4-4 record and nearly guided them to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2018. Key still has plenty of work ahead of him, though, as he enters his first year as the permanent head coach. Georgia Tech consistently found itself at the bottom of the conference with three consecutive three-win seasons under Geoff Collins, but the early success his replacement found in October and November suggests the floor will not completely fall out from underneath the program.

DUKE BLUE DEVILS: 5.5

Duke was one of college football’s surprise teams in 2022. First-year head coach Mike Elko –– the reigning ACC Coach of the Year –– guided the Blue Devils to their best season in nearly a decade, going 9-4 with a winning record in conference play and a Military Bowl victory. Las Vegas is fairly pessimistic about the sustainability of that early success, though, setting Duke’s win total at almost half the mark it posted last fall. Should Elko exceed expectations again, the program’s stock will skyrocket.

BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES: 5.5

Boston College hopes to rebound from a setback year that saw the Eagles go 3-9, marking their first sub-.500 regular season since 2015. The Caesars win total suggests confidence in their ability to climb out of that funk, but anything beyond adding a couple of wins to the tally could be a challenge. Boston College has not won more than seven games in a season since 2009, though it has been a model of consistency since then, logging six or seven wins in nearly every campaign over the last decade-and-a-half.

VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES: 5.5

What once was a perennial ACC title contender has a long road ahead of itself as it looks to rejoin the conference’s elites. Virginia Tech finished in a tie for last place in the league in Brent Pry’s first year at the helm, and the 3-8 record was the Hokies’ worst in 30 years. The post-Frank Beamer era has been a challenge, but the program has a rich tradition after consistently ranking among the nation’s best for more than two decades, so despite his early struggles, Pry has a solid foundation from which to build.

NC STATE WOLFPACK: 6.5

NC State is the first of eight ACC programs with a win total set over the bowl eligibility threshold, but with theirs at 6.5, the Wolfpack do not have much margin for error in qualifying for the postseason as Dave Doeren’s tenure enters its second decade. A late-season slide saw the Wolfpack drop three of its final four games in 2022, including a loss to three-win Boston College and a low-scoring 16-12 defeat in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. If that trend continues into the upcoming season, NC State could be at risk of logging its third sub-.500 record under Doeren’s watch.

WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS: 6.5

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson (Photo: Lance King, Getty)
Losing the ACC’s all-time passing leader in Sam Hartman via the transfer portal is a tough blow for Wake Forest to attempt to overcome in 2023. He helped lead the Demon Deacons to two of their most successful seasons of all-time, including an 11-win campaign in 2021. A step backward from last year’s eight wins is a realistic expectation, but Dave Clawson has raised the program’s floor over the last handful of years, which should prevent too much of a backslide.

SYRACUSE ORANGE: 6.5

Syracuse is back on the right track after a disastrous pandemic-impacted, one-win 2020 season. The Orange have improved upon their win total in each of the ensuing two years, and their 2023 projection splits the difference between the marks of five and seven that Dino Babers’ squad posted across the last two campaigns. While Syracuse has not been anything but a middle-of-the-road program throughout recent history, Babers does have a 10-win season on his resume and the Orange are always good for an upset or two.

On 2nd Thought: Why B1G Dropping P5 OOC (RX; HM)

On 2nd Thought: Why B1G Dropping P5 OOC

When Brett McMurphy broke the news that the Big Ten was thinking of dropping the requiement to schedule one or more P5 non-conference opponent(s) every year, most people's immediate response was something along the lines of "Oh, they are doing a favor for schools like Rutgers, Maryland, and Indiana so that they have a realistic shot at being bowl-eligible every year!"

Bless their hearts!
That is definitely NOT the reason the Big Ten is thinking of allowing an all-cupcake non-conference slate. Want proof? Look no further than one of the top football programs in the conference: Ohio State. Before the day was over, the Buckeyes have already announced three new OOC games - all G5 opponents. In fact, they filled out their 2024 schedule. Want to see it?

2024 Ohio State Non-Conference
8/31 - Southern Miss
9/07 - Western Michigan
9/21 - Marshall

Three home games (to go with what should be five B1G home games), and not a single P5 OOC opponent in sight. Probably better than 90% chance they go 3-0 against those teams (and I'm probably overestimating the chance of an upset!). Is this supposed to be better?

An Ohio State fan or a Big Ten apologist might argue that they probably don't want to fly to Los Angeles for a conference game and then make another long trip for a non-conference game. This might be the reason why the Buckeyes canceled their contract with the Washington Huskies for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

I'll even give them that they still have a P5 non-conference opponent in 2025 (Texas, which was already scheduled back in 2020). So, when Ohio State cancelled their home-and-away series with Washington back in February of this year (2023), they dropped from two P5 OOC opponents in 2025 to just one. Fair enough... but what about 2024?

Much Ado about 10% Fewer Snaps (RX; HM)

Much Ado about 10% Fewer Snaps

Division III rejected the clock stoppage rule changes which were approved by the FBS schools. Why? CBS Sports explains in "Angst increasing over college football clock stoppage rule creating inequity across NCAA divisions". Basically, it boils down to this:

"It eliminates valuable snaps for our student-athletes," said Holly Sheilley, athletic director at Transylvania and Division III Management Council chair... If the clock stoppage rule change was instituted across all divisions, a D-III player would lose the equivalent of 4.3 regular-season games (out of 40) across a four-year career.

That represents a reduction of roughtly 10% fewer snaps. D-III coaches are concerned about that because they don't have the CFP, so they aren't concerned about the risk of injury so much as opportunities for their players to play.

Early odds give NC State 5th-best chance to win 2023 ACC football title (backingthepack.com; Muma)

The ACC football title odds released by BetOnline today are optimistic about NC State’s chances this fall—at least, they seem optimistic to me.

Odds to win the ACC from @betonline_ag pic.twitter.com/7mdACyTT3W
— ️♈️ (@ADavidHaleJoint) May 10, 2023

The odds are a function of both team quality and schedule, and while State didn’t exactly get a cake draw like, say, Louisville, its toughest league games—Clemson, UNC, UL—do come at home. The Pack has favorable road trips to UVA and Virginia Tech as well. Dodging Florida State helps a lot, too. The Seminoles have the best quarterback in the league, after all.

Duke and Wake both feel undervalued but both have the misfortune of having to play Clemson and FSU. State gets to go to both Duke and Wake, which I’m sure will work out completely fine with absolutely nothing going wrong.

The good thing for the league overall, now that it’s finally free of divisions, is that the two best teams may actually end up playing each other in the ACC title game. What a concept!

NY is open to replacing Onondaga Lake Parkway’s low railroad bridge after record run of crashes (PS; $; Weiner)

A spike in truck crashes into Onondaga Lake Parkway’s railroad bridge has prompted New York’s transportation commissioner to reverse course and put back on the table the idea of raising or replacing the 152-year-old span.

The decision represents a significant change in state policy. A 2011 study ruled out using taxpayer money to rebuild CSX Transportation’s privately-owned bridge. At the time, raising or replacing the bridge would have cost as much as $20 million. The state is now open to paying for those things.

Marie Therese Dominguez, commissioner of the state Department of Transportation, ordered a new review of options and dispatched her chief engineer to Syracuse this week to figure out how to stop a surge of truck crashes into the low bridge.

“Nothing is off the table and the department will be coming out with new countermeasures – immediate and long term – in the very near future,” DOT spokesman Joe Morrissey told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

The state decided to change its approach and act with urgency out of concern for public safety, Morrissey said.

The number of trucks striking the bridge and over-height vehicles entering the parkway are both on pace to be the highest in 13 years since the state installed an early-warning detection system, DOT data shows.

Since the state has no authority over the bridge, it would need CSX’s permission to raise, move or replace it with a new one.

Game on: Upstate NY museum gets first giant delivery for epic board game-themed park (PS; Hernandez)

An award winning Upstate New York museum will be ready to have even more fun this summer with a new expansion that will include its recently delivered gigantic Scottie dog Monopoly token.

Rochester’s Strong Museum of Play will be expanding their footprint in Western NY with a new indoor wing and a brand new Hasbro Game Park, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. Neighbors got a sneak peek this week of what is to come when a 10-by-14-foot replica of the Scottie dog token from Monopoly was dropped off at the museum’s front door.

Though currently shrouded in white shrink wrap and looking like a mummified version of the game piece, the museum’s Vice President for Collections and Chief Curator, Christopher Bensch, said once unwrapped, the dog will have all the details and metallic finish of the original miniature version.

The Scottie dog will join other game pieces and toys in the new outdoor park, sure to deliver fun for kids and nostalgia for their parents. The grounds will also include a race-car Monopoly token replica that guests can sit in, Monopoly hotel piece and house piece that you can walk in to, a Get of Jail Free area, giant Scrabble tiles, a candy cane forest from Candy Land, a playable Simon game measuring 10 feet in diameter, Game of Life spinner that you can ride, Trivial Pursuit-shaped planter, giant Jenga pieces that you can cross a creek on, and more.
