National Pie Day is a "day to maintain America's pie heritage, pass on the tradition of pie making and promote America's love affair with pie." It is a day to bake and eat pies, try new recipes, and give pies to others. Charlie Papazian, who later went on to found the Great American Beer Festival, started the day in 1975 in his classroom, while teaching in Boulder, Colorado. He chose his birthday, January 23, as the day of celebration. In 1986, the American Pie Council began sponsoring the day, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Crisco. National Pie Day is also celebrated on December 1, but it is unknown why this date was also chosen or who chose it.
Pies are made up of pastry crusts filled with sweet or savory ingredients like fruits, custards, vegetables, meats and fish. The most common fruit pies in America are apple, blueberry, cherry, and peach, while banana cream is a favorite custard pie. Pumpkin pie is popular during autumn and winter, Key lime pie is a specialty of Florida, and Mississippi mud pie is beloved in the South. Pot pies often consist of chicken or beef with vegetables.

Class of 2025 Washington (DC) Riverdale Baptist offensive lineman Jayvon McFadden is a four star prospect per Rivals and a top 300 prospect by Rivals and ESPN. He has a plethora of scholarship offers and spent Saturday on the Syracuse campus to get a closer look at the program.
"The visit was very interesting," McFadden said. "The best parts for me were that I got to spend a lot of time with coach Williams. He made sure to let me know I'm a priority for them and they want me at their program. Also coach Fran made sure he was very honest with me and straightforward with me. Not trying to beat around the bush with me. I feel that's best for our relationship. I value honesty and look forward to continuing our relationship. He's my guy."
The 6-4, 270 pounder also enjoyed taking in Syracuse basketball's 72-69 win over Miami that ended on an Orange buzzer beater.
"The game was very competitive and the fans that were there were very into the game," McFadden said. "It was a crazy game at the end with the buzzer beat. The fans went insane. Overall the atmosphere was great as was the support. I didn't even know what to say (when the final shot went in). I was just like, 'wow. He's nice.'"

Class of 2025 Hyattsville (MD) DeMatcha Catholic linebacker Jermaine Minnis visited Syracuse over the weekend for Junior Day. The 6-1, 210 pounder who holds multiple power five offers enjoyed his time on campus.
"It was great," Minnis said. "Great vibes. Build some great relationships with those guys. Heck of a coaching staff. I definitely look forward to going back."
Conversations with those coaches were among the highlights of the visit.
"Realizations, personal things, just regular stuff," Minnis said. "They all wanted to know things deeper than football. Such as how I'm doing, how's my family, where I'm from, and etc. Just genuine conversations, and that's what makes Syracuse stand out. They pride themselves on being real with their people and recruits.
"I was able to connect with them from those realizations. I'm a person who likes to keep it real with others. Anybody can tell you what you want to hear, but very few will tell you what you need to hear. The truth."
Minnis also attended the basketball game, which saw Syracuse come out on top of a close, hard fought contest in the Dome.
"The basketball game was great," Minnis said. "Great game especially with the Cuse winning with a game winning buzzer beater. Great atmosphere. Never seen anything like it at a basketball game. The Dome was crazy loud. The supporters are genuine. They're dedicated to the Cuse and I love it. I was turnt (when Copeland hit the game winner). Hype with the fans and the coaches. Great and exciting win."

Syracuse football alum Ifeatu Melifonwu shines in Lions’ Divisional Round win (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)
We're still about two months from the start of Syracuse Orange spring football camp, one 'Cuse alum is making a huge impact in the NFL Playoffs.
2021 third round draft pick Ifeatu Melifonwu has stepped up in the Detroit Lions secondary. During Sunday's divisional game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Iffy was tied for a team-best nine tackles (six solo), matching a career high.
He also had 1.5 sacks in the Lions' victory, putting him in some very elite company among SU grads:
Ifeatu took some time to develop into an NFL-caliber safety, but the jump in year three has been remarkable. After playing in a combined 17 games his first two seasons, Melifonwu has not missed a single one in 2023-24.
Between all 17 regular season games and a pair of postseason wins, Ifeatu has racked up 45 tackles, 4.5 sacks, eight pass deflections, two picks, and a forced fumble. Now, the Lions need another strong performance from Iffy as they enter enemy territory in Santa Clara. Win, and they punch a ticket to their first ever Super Bowl appearance.

One former Syracuse football player is still in the hunt for the 2024 Super Bowl.
Ifeatu Melifonwu, a former cornerback at Syracuse University, is thriving in the safety position with the Detroit Lions. He recorded 9 total tackles (6 solo), a game-high 1.5 sacks and two QB hits in the Lions’ 31-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Lions are advancing to the NFC championship game for just the second time in team history, playing the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The winner will face the AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs or the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11.
If Melifonwu reaches the Super Bowl, he will be the first Orange alum to play in the NFL championship since Dwight Freeney and the Atlanta Falcons lost to the New England Patriots in 2017. A total of 28 Syracuse football players have appeared in the Super Bowl, with 24 of them winning the league’s Lombardi Trophy.

Last: Syracuse HC (2016-23)Babers, best known for his eight-season tenure as the head football coach at Syracuse, actually has some ties to both Brennan and Arizona. Before landing at Syracuse, Babers was a job-hopper, having held positions with 13 different schools at the NCAA Division I level. However, the longest he stayed with any one school was his 1995-2000 stint with Arizona where he focused exclusively on coaching the offensive side of the ball. Babers coached Arizona's wide receivers from 1995-96 and the running backs in 1997 before taking up the helm as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for three seasons from 1998-2000.
Having been recently fired before the conclusion of the 2023 season, Babers is likely in the market for another coaching job in a power conference, and the one-season overlap between Brennan and Babers at Arizona in 2000 may be enough to lure him to much warmer temperatures. The major concern is that only one offensive player from Syracuse — tackle Matthew Bergeron in 2023 — has been selected in the NFL Draft over Babers' tenure. Despite that, he would bring a wealth of experience to Arizona while also rehabbing his image on a national scale.

Syracuse University invites applicants for the Director of Performance Nutrition - Football position. The Director of Performance Nutrition for Football will create, administer, and monitor the nutrition program for all football student-athletes at Syracuse University. This individual will perform dietary assessments and counseling for all football student-athletes, create nutrition programs specific to each athlete, and track the outcomes of the goals set in place. The Director of Performance Nutrition for Football will work closely with the coaching staff, strength & conditioning staff, sports medicine staff, performance chefs and the Director of Performance Nutrition to ensure alignment of objectives on all nutrition and recovery matters. This individual will provide direction in planning all team meals during the playing season, offseason, and for all team travel. Qualifications-Bachelor’s degree (Masters Preferred) in nutrition (or related field) required. Must be a registered dietitian. Master’s degree preferred. ACC reveals first matchup for SMU football as new conference member (dallasnews.com; Staff)
Game dates for SMU football’s first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference will be announced this week.
In Week 1 on Aug. 31, SMU will play Houston Christian in a nonconference matchup at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, the ACC announced Monday. The Mustangs’ other nonconference opponents at home are TCU on Sept. 21, likely the last game in the rivalry for the forseeable future, and BYU on a date to be determined. SMU’s lone nonconference road game is at Vanderbilt.
In ACC play, SMU will host Boston College, Cal, Florida State and Pitt at home and travel to play Duke, Louisville, Stanford and Virginia on the road. The dates will be announced Wednesday during a two-hour special at 4 p.m. on the ACC Network.
The conference released in October its schedule model for the next seven football seasons, which includes the Mustangs, Stanford, and Cal for the first time in 2024.
The Mustangs will play eight ACC games beginning next season.
The 17-school ACC football standings won’t have divisions. Annual conference matchups will increase from 56 to 68.

North Carolina and NC State will get their 2024 football seasons started a few days early.
The Tar Heels visit Minnesota and the Wolfpack host Western Carolina on Thursday, Aug. 29, the ACC announced Monday. Duke and new coach Manny Diaz kicks off Friday, Aug. 30 at home against Elon.
The league is releasing its 2024 football schedule over three days. The bulk of the schedule for the 17-team league will be released Wednesday (5 p.m., ACC Network).
Cal, Stanford and SMU join the ACC as full members on July 1. The league will not have divisions and the top two finishers in the regular season will meet in the ACC Championship Game.
All 17 teams will play on the opening weekend. Georgia Tech and Florida State meet on Aug. 24 (Week 0) in Dublin, Ireland. Florida State, which is suing the ACC, hosts Boston College on Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day) to cap the first full weekend of games.

In leading up to the ACC Huddle: 2024 Football Schedule Release Show on Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 5-7 p.m. ET on ACC Network and simulcast on ESPN2, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced today the scheduled games for Week 1. All 17 ACC Football programs will play throughout Labor Day weekend, highlighted by Boston College at Florida State on Monday night.
As previously announced, Georgia Tech and Florida State will compete in a Week 0 season opener that will be played in Ireland.
Week 0 – In Ireland with ESPN’s College Gameday Built by The Home Depot
• Two teams from the ACC in Florida State and Georgia Tech will be part of history in Week 0 of the 2024 season, as ESPN’s College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will broadcast live for the first time outside of the United States from Dublin, Ireland, for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024, to kick off the 2024 season.
• Florida State, which was part of ESPN’s College GameDay premiere show in 1993, will make its 35th appearance. Georgia Tech will be making its sixth appearance on the pregame show.

Harrison House, a former home for low- and moderate-income tenants in Syracuse, has been vacant since SUNY Upstate Medical University took possession in 2010.
Hochul urgently calls for new housing. Why is the state’s Syracuse apartment tower still boarded up? (PS; $; Knauss)
It’s been two years since Gov. Kathy Hochul vowed to address the housing crisis with more than $25 billion in state funding. This year, she has proposed additional funds for municipalities that embrace residential development. She wants to renew a tax break for private developers in New York City.
But here in Central New York, Hochul has not taken what appears to be one of the simplest first steps: Fix up a 199-unit, high-rise apartment building in Syracuse that is owned by the state and has been vacant for 13 years.
Harrison House, a run-down, 21-story tower near the intersection of South Townsend and Harrison streets, was seized by the state years ago for an unpaid government mortgage. It was handed to SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2010 and has been boarded up ever since.
At a time when roughly 800 Central New York households are homeless and on waiting lists for housing, Hochul and SUNY Upstate have made no visible move to bring Harrison House back to life. They won’t even confirm whether they are considering the idea.
Six months ago, Hochul ordered every state agency, including the university system, to search their property holdings for potential housing sites.
In her State of the State speech this month, Hochul said that effort had identified a number of properties that could be used to create housing. She said those properties could yield as many as 15,000 new housing units.
But she offered no details. Neither Hochul nor SUNY Upstate will say whether Harrison House is among the sites under consideration.
Meanwhile, some 800 local households are waiting to be placed in permanent apartments after spending time in temporary shelters, according to the Housing and Homeless Coalition of Central New York.

Woman rescued after falling through ice on Seneca River trying to save 2 dogs; the dogs died (PS; $; Stevenson)
A woman was taken to a hospital Sunday after she and her two dogs fell through ice on the Seneca River near Memphis, troopers said.
Around 11:49 a.m., a neighbor living on Rayrene Drive called 911 to report someone fell through the ice of Seneca River, according to Onondaga County 911 Dispatch reports.
Officers told dispatchers rescuers should drive to Morgan Road in the town of Lysander to rescue the woman, according to dispatch reports.
When emergency crews arrived, they found a 36-year-old woman in the water, according to Trooper Jack Keller, a State Police spokesperson. The woman — who lives on Morgan Road — had tried to stop her dogs and followed them onto the ice when all three fell in, he said.
The woman was in the water for 20 minutes, Keller said. Neither dog made it out of the water, he said.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, Jordan Ambulance, Plainville Fire Department, Jordan Fire Department, and the Northwest Fire Department responded to assist with the ice rescue.
Keller said the woman was taken to Upstate University Hospital for evaluation.
