National Tooth Fairy Day is dedicated to the mythical fairy who brings money or other gifts to children who have lost teeth. The loss of a first tooth can be a traumatic experience for a young child, but the promise of a gift from the tooth fairy helps make the experience something a child can look forward to. Many English speaking countries practice the tradition of the tooth fairy, in which a child usually puts their tooth in a "tooth box" and awaits the arrival of the tooth fairy when they are sleeping. The tradition started in the United States, but it is based off medieval European superstitions. In England, children were to burn their baby teeth so they wouldn't experience hardship in the afterlife, and so that witches would not find the teeth, as it was thought witches could control someone if they got their teeth. It was not until the 20th century that the modern day tooth fairy came to be, the earliest reference to the fairy being in the Chicago Daily Tribune in 1908. In 1927, Esther Watkins Arnold published her playlet The Tooth Fairy, which helped popularize the tooth fairy with children.

Syracuse Football: 4-star Va. athlete, a top-200 national prospect, will visit ‘Cuse (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse football coaches have lined up a visit from another highly ranked prospect in the 2025 class.
According to national analyst Adam Friedman, consensus four-star athlete Messiah Delhomme from Virginia, a top-200 overall player in the junior cycle, will take an unofficial visit to the ‘Cuse on April 13, which is fabulous news.
Per Friedman, the 6-foot-1, 196-pound Delhomme has set a bunch of unofficial and official visits from mid-March until late June.
He plans to visit Virginia Tech, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio State, Virginia Tech again, Virginia again, Ohio State again, and Maryland again, with the first trips to these four schools being unofficial visits and then the second trips amounting to official visits.

Syracuse football will get a visit from 2025 four-star athlete Messiah Delhomme.
Throughout his recruiting process, Delhomme has landed more than 20 offers from a range of high-major programs. Delhomme said via X on February 19 that the new Orange coaching staff had offered a scholarship to him.Per recruiting Web sites, his full offer sheet also includes Alabama, Auburn, Boston College, Duke, Florida State, James Madison, Kentucky, Liberty, Maryland, Michigan, N.C. State, Ohio State, Penn State, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others.
Within the 2025 class, multiple recruiting services rate Delhomme as a top-200 national prospect, a top-10 athlete or safety, and a top-five player coming out of Virginia.

Syracuse Football: 'Cuse a finalist for 4-star Ty Jackson, nation's No. 1 linebacker (itlh; Adler)
Four-star junior Ty Jackson from Florida, a top-20 national prospect and the country's No. 1 linebacker according to several recruiting services, has named his 10 finalists, and Syracuse football made the cut.
Wow. That's pretty impressive, especially since the new Orange coaching staff only offered a scholarship to him in early January of this year. On3 national recruiting expert Hayes Fawcett first reported the news of Jackson's list cut.
His group of finalists is elite. Besides the 'Cuse, Jackson's top 10 features Tennessee, Florida State, Florida, Miami, Penn State, Georgia, Oklahoma, Alabama and Texas A&M, according to Fawcett.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Jackson has picked up more than two dozen scholarship offers from a range of high-major programs, according to his bio on the 247Sports Web site.

We’re less than a month away from the first Syracuse Orange football practice of the 2024 season. SU fans will see their Orangemen in action during the team’s annual spring game on April 20 before the regular season kicks off on Aug. 31.
Optimism is at an all-time high in Fran Brown’s first year and rightfully so. The former Georgia defensive backs coach brings in the highest-graded recruiting class (40th) since 247Sports began tracking in 2004.
But how about SU’s 2024 opponents? Where do they stack up? Take a quick glance at the schedule, and you might think the Orange are bound for a 10-win season. Let’s dive a little deeper. Listed below are each team’s record last season and incoming recruiting class for this year, per 247Sports.

Surprisingly, Ohio is the only 10-win team that SU will face. But it’ll be an uphill battle for the Bobcats in their regular season opener without longtime quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who transferred to Indiana during the offseason.
Recruiting-wise, Miami will bring a stacked roster to the JMA Wireless Dome on Nov. 30. Marquise Lightfoot and Armondo Blount highlight Mario Cristobal’s revamped defensive line, while wide receiver Joshisa Trader is one of the top pass-catching recruits in the country. The Hurricanes also added quarterback Cam Ward, who was one of the hottest names in the transfer portal after departing from Washington State.
The game I’m most interested in is when the Orange travel to Cal on Nov. 16. While Syracuse would undoubtedly be favored to win on a neutral field, who knows how it’ll play traveling nearly 3,000 miles to West Coast. It’ll be the first matchup between the two schools since 1968 and the third contest overall.

ACC files brief opposed to FSU motion to dismiss (ESPN; Adelson)
The ACC filed a brief Tuesday in North Carolina court in opposition to Florida State's motion to dismiss or stay its case, the latest legal filing before a scheduled hearing March 22 where both parties will make their cases in front of a judge.
In Tuesday's brief, the ACC outlined why the case should play out in North Carolina -- reiterating it is the appropriate venue for a dispute over a North Carolina contract to be decided.
The ACC filed suit against the Florida State board of trustees on Dec. 21 seeking declaratory judgment in defense of the grant of rights, one day before the Florida State board filed its lawsuit against the ACC that challenged the grant of rights and the $130 million withdrawal fee.
Florida State and all other ACC members signed a grant of rights with the league that runs through 2036, the length of its television contract with ESPN. The grant of rights gives the conference control over its media rights -- including television revenue and home-game broadcasts in all sports. In addition, any school that wants to leave the ACC would have to pay an exit fee of three times the league's operating budget, or roughly $130 million.
In its motion to dismiss, the Florida State board of trustees argued the ACC lawsuit was a "race to the courthouse" and "fundamentally flawed." In the brief filed Tuesday in response, the ACC argued that it had no choice but to file its lawsuit first to protect itself and the grant of rights.
"There is nothing improper about a party seeking to protect its rights by filing first," the ACC argued.
In addition, the ACC argued that the North Carolina court should not defer to the Florida court, as Florida State has asked, because "FSU has not met its burden to show substantial injustice."
The ACC has filed its own motion to dismiss or stay the case in Leon County, Florida. No court hearing has been set yet for that case.
ACC Football Odds 2024: Clemson, FSU Lead Way; Tar Heels 6th in ACC Title Futures (usatoday.com; Caraviello)
Six months remain until teams in the ACC begin playing football for real. But thanks to college football futures odds, we can get an early look at how teams might stack up in a newly expanded league that now includes Stanford, California and SMU.
There’s no surprise at the top, where sportsbooks have Clemson and Florida State as +270 co-favorites to win the ACC Championship Game. Next is Miami at +450 and Louisville at +470, followed by Old North State rivals N.C. State at +1300 and North Carolina at +2200.
For the state of North Carolina in particular, ACC football (and basketball) futures loom large as North Carolina sports betting prepares to launch on March 11. The state will also see a major influx of talent at quarterback — with transfers Maalik Murphy (Texas) taking over at Duke, Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina) at N.C. State and Max Johnson (Texas A&M) at UNC.
Betting on ACC Futures in North Carolina Coming Soon
ACC futures are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the available wagers that North Carolina betting apps will have available on launch day March 11 — a menu that will also include season win totals and national championship futures. The groundhog told us to expect an early spring this year.
It’s a forecast several ACC football teams are taking literally.
Even though it’s still just February, a full month before the seasons officially change, several are already jumping the gun and heading out onto the field for their annual spring practice.
NC State and newbie SMU will be the 1st to break the ice – figuratively, of course – by kicking things off on Tuesday. Clemson will follow suit a day later before everyone finally gets into the act.
NCAA rules allow each team up to 15 spring practices to get a head start on preparations for the fall. For some teams, it’s an opportunity to finetune and polish. For others, it’s a chance to work 1st-time starters, transfers and other newcomers into the lineup. And for a few, it’s a time to become familiar with a new coordinator or staff.
Some are more anxious to get started than others. If Punxsutawney Phil says it’s okay, then who’s to argue?
While each team has its own set of goals to accomplish, their spring practices will go a long way toward setting the tone for their 2024 season.
Here’s a look at the top priority for each of the ACC’s 17 teams as they strap their helmets and pads back on and begin their work:
Boston College
First practice: TBASpring game: Saturday, April 13, Time TBA
Jeff Hafley’s abrupt departure to the NFL has thrown the Eagles’ spring schedule askew. Practice was supposed to begin this Friday. But because newly hired coach Bill O’Brien is still in the process of hiring assistants, evaluating the talent he has on hand and looking for new additions on the transfer portal, he has announced that it will now be delayed until after BC’s spring break next week. As of now, the previously announced April 13 date for the spring game is still the target. That means O’Brien and his newly assembled staff will have a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time to make up for their late start. Regardless of specific areas of need, getting everyone on the same page headed into the fall is Job 1.
Cal
First practice: Monday, March 18Spring game: Saturday, April 20, Time TBA
The Bears improved from 96th nationally to No. 52 in scoring offense on the way to an Independence Bowl bid in 2023. But with coordinator Jake Spavital leaving for Baylor after the season, it will be up to his replacement, offensive line coach Mike Bloesch to continue the momentum in Cal’s debut ACC season. He’ll have the advantage of 1,300-yard rusher Jaydn Ott to build around. But Bloesch will have to find a quarterback capable of running his system from a group that includes incumbent starter Fernando Mendoza, North Texas transfer Chandler Rogers and top incoming freshman EJ Caminong.
Clemson
First practice: Wednesday, Feb. 28Spring game: Saturday, April 6, 1 pm ET
The Tigers’ offense has fluctuated greatly, depending on the quarterback, during Dabo Swinney’s 16-season run of excellence. But the 1 constant through it all has been an aggressive, physical defense stocked with future NFL draft picks. That may or may not be the case in 2024 after the loss of all 4 defensive line starters, All-American linebacker Jeremiah Trotter and 2 key contributors to the secondary. According to ESPN’s Bill Connelly, Clemson returns only 49% of its defensive production from last season. That means a lot of young players are going to have to make the most of the spring reps they get from Swinney and coordinator Wes Goodwin.
Duke
First practice: TBASpring game: Saturday, April 20, 6 pm ET
New Blue Devils coach Manny Diaz has had more time to get settled in and prepare for spring practice than his counterpart O’Brien at BC. But he and his staff are also fighting a time crunch. While there are massive holes to fill on both sides of the ball because of graduation and transfer, the most pressing task will be deciding on a quarterback to succeed Riley Leonard – who became the 2nd former ACC passer in as many seasons poached by Notre Dame. Sophomore Grayson Loftis showed a strong arm and good leadership skills while going 3-2 as a starter last year. Henry Belin IV, who was ahead of Loftis on the depth chart before getting hurt, will also be in the mix as will highly-touted Texas transfer Maalik Murphy.
Florida State
First practice: Tuesday, March 19Spring game: Saturday, April 20, Time TBA
There are plenty of holes to fill from last year’s undefeated ACC champions. But Mike Norvell and his staff have experience with the transfer portal and have been successful at building chemistry and blending new players in with their returning talent. Particular attention will be placed on getting new quarterback DJ Uiagalelei up to speed on the offense. But the most important task this spring is making sure everyone in the program puts the past behind them and channels the anger and disappointment of the Seminoles’ Playoff snub and subsequent Orange Bowl beatdown by Georgia into positive energy moving forward.
Georgia Tech
First practice: Monday, March 11Spring game: Saturday, April 13, 1 pm ET
The Yellow Jackets took a major step forward in Brent Key’s first full season as coach by winning 7 games and earning bowl eligibility for the 1st time since 2018. The biggest jump came on offense, thanks to the play calling of coordinator Buster Faulkner and the passing of Texas A&M transfer Haynes King. The next step in the process is building a defense to match. That was an issue last season, so much so that Key changed coordinators in midstream. Addressing it will be a spring priority for Key’s newest coordinator Tyler Santucci, who helped transform Duke’s defense into 1 of the ACC’s best last season.
Louisville
First practice: Tuesday, March 19Spring game: Friday, April 19, 7 pm ET, ACC Network
Jeff Brohm made an immediate splash in his 1st season back at his alma mater by leading the Cardinals to their first ACC Championship Game appearance. In order to have a shot at a repeat performance, he’s going to have to find replacements for his quarterback, top 2 running backs and most productive receiver, as well as the leader of his offensive line. Louisville returns only 59% of its offense. The encouraging news is that the transfer class Brohm has brought in is ranked among the nation’s best by multiple recruiting sites.
Miami
First practice: Monday, March 4Spring game: Friday, April 13, Time TBA
For the first time in 3 years, the Hurricanes return the same head coach (Mario Cristobal) and both coordinators (Shannon Dawson on offense and Lance Guidry on defense). That in itself should help set the stage for a productive spring. That continuity is especially important, at least from a defensive perspective, considering the rebuild that’s needed in the secondary, where Guidry will have to find replacements for starting safeties Kam Kinchens and James Williams – both of whom are projected to be high-round NFL Draft picks.
North Carolina
First practice: Tuesday, March 19Spring game: Friday, April 20, 3 pm ET
Perhaps no one in the ACC has as much work to do this spring than Mack Brown and his staff. On defense, his new coordinator Geoff Collins will have to begin the process of improving a unit that has been the Tar Heels’ Achilles heel since Brown’s return in 2019. The task on offense is just as tall, if not more so, with both All-ACC quarterback Drake Maye and top receiver Tez Walker having moved on to the NFL.
NC State
First practice: Tuesday, Feb. 27Spring game: Saturday, April 6, 2 pm ET
The Wolfpack knocked on the door of their elusive 10-win season for the 4th time in the past 7 years in 2024 before getting turned away again, this time by Kansas State in the Pop Tarts Bowl. In order to finally get over the hump, Dave Doeren and his staff are going to have to find or develop some additional offensive weapons to complement last year’s freshman sensation KC Concepcion. He and offensive coordinator Robert Anae will have plenty of options from which to choose after loading up on receivers and running backs off the portal to go along with transfer quarterback Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina.
Pittsburgh
First practice: Monday, March 4Spring game: Saturday, April 13, 2 pm ET
The Panthers rode the arm of All-ACC quarterback Kenny Pickett to their 1st ACC championship in 2021. Since then, coach Pat Narduzzi has swung and missed on 2 straight transfers brought in to continue the success. At least Kedon Slovis was able to get Pitt to a bowl game in 2022. Phil Jurkovec didn’t make it to the midway point in last season before getting benched as the Panthers struggled to a 3-9 finish. This year’s candidates are holdovers Christian Veilleux and Nate Yarnell, redshirt freshman Ty Dieffenbach and former 4-star prospect Eli Holstein, a transfer from Alabama who hasn’t played a snap of college football yet but was good enough to be recruited by Nick Saban. The pressure will be on Narduzzi to make the right choice. Because as everyone knows, 3 strikes and you’re out.
SMU
First practice: Tuesday, Feb. 27Spring game: TBA
The Mustangs were among the nation’s highest-scoring FBS teams at 38.7 points per game while also ranking among the leaders in scoring defense while allowing only 17.7 per game. It was a performance that helped propel them to the American Athletic Conference championship in their final season in the league. But coach Rhett Lashlee’s team received a rude early welcome to the ACC in a Fenway Bowl loss to future league rival Boston College. Getting his program better prepared for the step up to the higher level of competition this season will be high on Lashlee’s list of spring objectives.
Stanford
First practice: Monday, April 1Spring game: Saturday, April 20, 1 p.m. PT
After winning only 3 games in his debut season with the Cardinal, coach Troy Taylor is still working to build a foundation for his program as it prepares to enter the ACC. That means establishing a culture as much as it does evaluating talent. It’s a big job. But Taylor has a history that suggests he’s got a shot. In 3 seasons at FCS Sacramento State, his teams went a combined 30-8 with 3 consecutive Big Sky Conference championships.
Syracuse

New coach Fran Brown has already given a glimpse of his chops as a recruiter by bringing in a standout transfer class, including several newcomers he brought with him from 2-time national champion Georgia. Sometimes it’s good to mix up our pizza routine, whether it’s experimenting with unconventional toppings or venturing away from the New York-style altogether.
That’s exactly what we’re doing today. We’re bringing a little bit of Chicago to Syracuse.
Most shops around here create 16- to 18-inch pizzas on a thin, hand-tossed crust. The slices are wide, giving you a foldable center. East of Chicago Pizza, a franchise restaurant that opened last July 10 on Court Street in Lyncourt, will certainly make you a traditional pizza, but that’s an eyebrow-raising culinary clash of cultures. That’s akin to ordering a ribeye steak in a vegetarian restaurant.
When in Chicago, do as the Cubs do.
“We’re trying to bring the Midwestern charm out here,” said owner Jason Barton. “Chicago-style is different, but it’s so good. A lot of the ingredients are the same, but they’re put together differently and in a different order.”
Jason, 27, grew up in Lima, Ohio. He came here 10 years ago to attend Le Moyne College and never left. After graduating with a triple major, he took a job as a systems analyst at Equitable in downtown Syracuse.

Company seeks tax breaks for $122 million expansion expected to create 400 jobs in DeWitt (PS; $; Moriarty)
A California company is seeking nearly $16 million in local tax breaks for a $122 million expansion in DeWitt that is expected to create 400 jobs.
TTM Technologies Inc. has applied to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency for a payment-in-lieu-of-tax agreement that would save the company $10.6 million in property taxes over 30 years, as well as $4.5 million in sales taxes on construction materials and $825,000 in mortgage recording tax.
Under the proposed agreement, TTM, which bought Anaren Inc. five years ago, would receive a 100% property tax exemption on the new facility for 21 years. The exemption would be phased out over the next nine years.
In total, the company would pay $16 million in payments in town, county and school taxes during the life of the deal. Without the property tax breaks, TTM’s tax bill would be about $26 million over 30 years.
Those local tax breaks are only part of what taxpayers are providing for TTM’s expansion.

Several music legends are coming to Syracuse for the Outlaw Music Festival.
Willie Nelson & Family, Bob Dylan, and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss will perform at the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview on Friday, June 28. Special guest Celisse will open the show at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets go on sale Friday, March 1, at 10 a.m. via Live Nation; prices may vary. Presale tickets will be available Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m. with password ENERGY.

Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Robert Plant are all members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Plant, who was inducted as a member of Led Zeppelin, has been collaborating with Grammy-winning bluegrass musician Alison Krauss since 2007.
Nelson and Dylan previously played the Syracuse amphitheater in 2017, while this will be Plant’s first time at the venue. Led Zeppelin performed in 1969 and 1971 at the War Memorial, while the “Stairway to Heaven” singer played a solo show at the Landmark Theatre in 1993.
More than 15 concerts have been announced for the 2024 lineup at the Empower FCU Amphitheater. The Amp, previously known as St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview and the Lakeview Amphitheater, was recently renamed in a 7-year deal worth $4 million.
The Outlaw Music Festival will make two other Upstate New York stops on July 6 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and Sept. 17 at Darien Lake Amphitheater. The lineup will for Bethel Woods will be the same as Syracuse, while Darien Lake will feature John Mellencamp and Southern Avenue instead of Robert Plant & Alison Krauss and Celisse.
