Maryland at Syracuse: Story Lines to Watch (washingtonpost.com; Stubbs)
...
Here are five story lines to watch:
1. Take pressure off C.J. Brown
Watch for Maryland to strike a more balanced offensive attack this week against the Orange, which has seven defensive players who started last year and ranks among with nine tackles for losses per game. C.J. Brown shouldered the offensive load last week, including on the ground, rushing for 161 yards on 18 carries after Maryland made adjustments with its zone read against West Virginia’s 3-3-5 defense. The running backs, Brandon Ross and Albert Reid, combined for just four yards on seven carries. Expect that number to go up considerably Saturday, with Wes Brown getting in the mix and Maryland alleviating pressure on C.J. Brown’s offensive presence.
2. Keep Syracuse’s running game in check
The Orange have had two running backs eclipse the 100-yard mark in the first two games, and quarterback Terrel Hunt rushed for another 92 yards and three touchdowns last week. Orange power back Adonis Ameen-Moore, who weighs 234 pounds, needed just nine carries to go for 106 yards last week against Central Michigan. It also has a change-of-pace back in Prince-Tyson Gulley, who showed his home-run ability with a 65-yard touchdown run against Villanova in the opener. Maryland still has questions with health at linebacker, and will have to be on its toes a week after giving up 97 yards to West Virginia’s Rushel Shell.

THE SCRIPT
Maryland still has a foul taste in its mouth from last year’s 20-3 loss to Syracuse at home, but this Terrapins team arrives at Saturday’s matchup with the Orange in a much better place. Despite all of its shortcomings last week against West Virginia — the deficiencies on third downs, giving up 694 yards of offense — it still had a chance to win in the fourth quarter after trailing by 22 earlier in the game. Maryland hasn’t played at the Carrier Dome since 1994, and Saturday’s game marks a return for Maryland Coach Randy Edsall to his alma mater. He played down the significance of his personal history with the school earlier this week, looking solely focused on his team picking up its third win. After last week’s emotionally draining loss on a last-second field goal, a win over a team that resides in its former conference would prevent a two-game rut heading into its inaugural Big Ten game against Indiana.
THE QUESTIONS
1) Will Maryland find ways to sustain drives?
Two weeks ago against South Florida, the offense’s issue was six turnovers. Last week, it was an inability to convert critical third downs in the second half.
