What Caused Terrel Hunt to Struggle Throwing Against Maryland? (PS; Bailey)

Terrel Hunt's 14-for-28 passing performance in Syracuse's 34-20 loss to Maryland on Saturday has drawn some concern. Hunt struggled with his accuracy at times, but was also hurt by dropped passes and the loss of Ashton Broyld, who suffered a lower-right leg injury near the end of the first quarter.
Quarterbacks coach Tim Lester said on Tuesday that Hunt's issues stemmed from holding on to the ball for too long and being, understandably, tired from rushing 23 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

"The week before I think he was at 89 percent always going to the weakness of the defense," Lester said of Hunt's passing decision. "This week he was, I forget the exact number, but it wasn't even close. I think it was 50s or low 60s."
...

The dropped passes early on had to hurt; tough to throw a nice, catchable pass and have it dropped. Killed an early drive. The pick six was obviously the worst play of the game; don't know who screwed up as far as the play call, but you can't throw a pass to an area where you have nothing but opposing players. That was a ten to fourteen point turn around, depending on if SU scored the TD or kicked a FG. Moral from the stats and comments above; can't have Hunt as the primary run gainer and expect him to have the energy and focus to pass effectively. Based on the effectiveness of the SU offense in gaining yards, and the ability to avoid the mistakes made in the Maryland game, I am going into the ND game with some confidence that we can give them a game and maybe pull out the upset. BTW, the defense played a pretty strong game. I hope they can pull the upset because I'll be sitting there in Metlife Stadium cheering them on.

being tired is one thing.. but why miss so many reads , which shouldnt be simply explained away by running. I think its clear when he throws into coverage his numbers drop because his he not that accurate to start with. Also when you miss reads you end up having to throw late. his throws on rhythm are so much better

ACC Week 5 predictions (ESPN)

Why Notre Dame will win: Notre Dame will get its biggest test of the season Saturday, coming off a bye. And the Irish are getting a Syracuse team that feels it let one slip away Saturday against Maryland. Terrel Hunt is capable of making plays and putting points on the board for the Orange, but the bye could not have come at a better time for Notre Dame, whose secondary will likely get Austin Collinsworth back, in addition to having Max Redfield(targeting) and Cole Luke (head) return. Look for Everett Golson to run a smoother operation offensively, where the Irish hope four position switches are the answers to an offensive line that struggled against Purdue and that has to get better before facing Stanford on Oct. 4. Syracuse will keep this one close for three quarters, but the Irish's playmakers will prove to be too much at the end. Notre Dame 35, Syracuse 20.-- Matt Fortuna

Fascinating how we have no shot with so many people. every radio show says how we got crushed by maryland. clearly noone watched that game. Maryland has better play makers than ND and thats not why they won last week. You dont just switch up 4 oline spots 3 weeks in unless you want to try and fix serious issues and if 4 people should have been in those spots then it should have been more obvious when the season started.

.@Coach_Shafer begins press conference by announcing Wayne Morgan will have a knee procedure today.

"We'll have our hands full... But it's a great opportunity to play a great team at MetLife." @Coach_Shafer

"You want to get that victory. You look forward to playing in these types of games... This is what you live for... Play for. @Coach_Shafer

@Coach_Shafer says the staff have complete confidence in team's 3rd, 4th & even 5th running backs. Speaking on depth at that position.

@Coach_Shafer says Fr. RB Erv Philips played a lot and did a lot if good things, especially on special teams, in Maryland game.

@Coach_Shafer says plyrs watching games leading up to Sat night gets them in better mindset than watching General Hospital (Fri night game)

"Lively competition" in practice this week as far as which kicker will get the start vs. Notre Dame. -@Coach_Shafer

"Rob has worked really hard to be the best player he can be in his last season." @Coach_Shafer on DL Robert Welsh

@Coach_Shafer tells story of getting yelled at by @ESPNDrLou for crossing 50 in warmups in 1st game as coaching GA playing at Notre Dame.

"We've gotten to where we're respectable again. We want to fight our butt off to get where we are relevant again... a top 25 team again."

Shafer: Wayne Morgan is having his knee "cleaned up" today. His timeline for return is uncertain.

Shafer wouldn't say if Morgan needs surgery. Going to see the doctor today, though.

Corey Winfield and Antwan Cordy are the next two guys on the depth chart. Shafer didn't want to say if anyone else (Scissum?) is in mix.

Shafer compared freshman RB Erv Philips to a young Michael Turner at Northern Illinois. Not the first time he's done that.

Shafer said the staff knows who it wants to go with at kicker. Doesn't want to give ND an advantage by saying Murphy/Norton, though.

Shafer on Notre Dame's awe factor: "The older you get, the more you know it's still football."

Shafer is reminiscing about his first game as a grad assistant at Indiana. Playing Notre Dame, he does remember being awed before game.

Shafer said one of the things he looks forward to most in practice is watching AJ Long run the scout team. Reminds him of Hunt pre-starter.

Shafer: All the hoopla is great but it's also overrated.

Shafer on Ishmael: Young receivers all need to work on physicality, he felt like he left a few plays on the field

Shafer on perception: We have a lot of faithful fans, former players looking to come see us.

Shafer: We have to improve on turnovers. Should have been two more above the curve.

Shafer on awe factor: The older you get the more you know it's still football. ... Shafer tells story of Lou Holtz yelling at him.

Shafer on AJ Long: The last couple weeks I really enjoy watching the scout offense and seeing him compete. He is a son of a gun.

Shafer on what big game means: we've played a lot of big games. We knew we had to rebuild things. We feel program is respectable again.

Shafer: We want to fight out butt off to become relevant again, to become a Top 25 team. That's a big step.
