The New SU AD Needs to be Big Picture, At Least for Now (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Local Syracuse fans voiced their thoughts on what they'd do as the next AD and in doing so revealed how far apart some mindsets are from the reality of Syracuse's situation.

Syracuse Athletics doesn't currently have an athletic director. We've made some recommendations, John has submitted himself for the position, and pretty soon we'll probably find out who that lucky(?) person is.

In the meantime, ESPN Syracuse's Upon Further Review took it upon themselves to interview callers for the open position yesterday. Who better to consider for the job than local Syracuse fans who call into radio shows? It's put up or shut up time.

And so, they put up. And well, most probably should have shut up.

Multiple people wanted Syracuse to start a men's hockey team so badly it was among their top priorities if they got the job. Like, first thing they'd do.

There were some good thoughts, too. One caller said that his first orders of business would be to keep Pete Sala on staff and then make a push to the local community to rebuild that connection instead of worry about building up our Northern New Jersey brand awareness. And I appreciated the caller who wanted Syracuse to employ the soft scheduling approach to rebuilding the football program.

I think the point that I took away from the whole exercise is that there's a stark difference between things that you want Syracuse Athletics to do and the things that Syracuse Athletics absolutely needs to do right now.

There Are 42 Bowl Games Now, so SU Really Needs to Sort Out Scheduling (TNIAAM; Keeley)

The NCAA is practically begging schools like Syracuse to get to six wins every season.

We've turned into a bit of a broken record when it comes toSyracuse Orange football future scheduling. There are tons of reasons why SU needs to get it's ass in gearand start locking up games against beatable opponents with interesting and valuable recruiting benefits.

Let's add one more into the mix.

The NCAA just certified threw new college football bowl games in Tuscon, Austin and Orlando, bringing the grand total to 42 games in 2015. There are eighty-four spots available for FBS schools to not only play in a bowl game but also get those coveted extra practices in December.

And they're not done yet. There's a game in Little Rock still looking for certification. The Pac-12 is exploring the possibility of a bowl in Australia. And we know that the ACC wants a piece of that sweet(?) International college football pie, an obvious conclusion of which could end up as a bowl game in the Caribbean or Cuba or South America or who the hell knows (also, what about the Sausage Bowl?).

The point is, there's a very clear message that the NCAA and the college football powers are putting out there: We want EVERYONE to play in a bowl game and if we could, that's what we'd do, cause we can't stop making money off of them.

Five Syracuse Players Who Could be Drafted in 2016 (Fox Sports)

This year Syracuse was shut out of the NFL draft for only the second time since 1975, according to Syracuse.com, but it’s doubtful the Orange will be blanked in 2016.

Syracuse.com released a list of Orange players most likely to be drafted next season and the prospects looked promising. Guard/center Rob Trudo, quarterback Terrel Hunt, offensive tackle Ivan Foy, corner Julian Whigham and hybrid back Ashton Broyld comprised the list.

Trudo is a 6-4, 300-pounder who has started 33 games in three seasons, while Hunt is a 6-3, 234-pound electric QB who has shown plenty of potential when healthy.

The 6-5, 292-pound Foy has switched from right tackle to left tackle, but is coming off of a season where he only played six games due to a knee injury. Prior to that, he started all 13 games as a redshirt sophomore.

Broyld, who stands at 6-3, 216 pounds, has played five different positions for Syracuse and is still finding himself. Broyld’s full talents are expected to be put on display this season in offensive coordinator Tim Lester’s offense. Whigham struggled last season, but another year as a starter should allow him to excel and be play more consistent.

SU 2015 Schedule Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

It's not football season yet, I know. But it's 120 days away, for those keeping track. And that means we can start jumping into some initial prep for an all-important 2015 season at Syracuse. We start with our opponents, which are not as tough as they've been in recent seasons. Each week, we'll preview each team on the 2015 slate. Today, we continue with the:

Wake Forest Demon Deacons
School: Wake Forest University

Mascot: Demon Deacons

#BRAND Slogan: "Turn Who You Are Into What You'll Be"

Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "Wake Up Our Athletic Department." "Quit Deacon Around."

Recommended Blog: Blogger So Dear

Conference: Atlantic Coast Conference

Coach: Dave Clawson, second year. Dave was born in our own New York State (Youngstown, N.Y. to be exact), went to college at Williams (smart guy!) and coached at FCS powerhouse Fordham. He also has MAC ties, like pretty much the entire Syracuse staff.

2014 Record: (3-9) (1-7)

Recapping Last Season:

Clawson's first-year in Winston-Salem was not exactly smooth sailing, though there was some improvement in terms of competitiveness for sure (except against Syracuse -- BURN). There was also this terrifying affront to football. But beyond those points, 2014 was very much a transition year for the Deacons.
