Welcome to National Candy Corn Day!

National Candy Corn Day is today. Enjoy a handful of this sweet Fall treat. And, what perfect timing. National Candy Corn Day comes just a day before Halloween. That means you can eat plenty of it, before you go out Trick or Treating.

Candy corn is enjoyed all year long. Place it in a candy dish any time of the year, and watch it disappear by the handful. By far, the vast majority of candy corn is consumed during the Fall months, with both Halloween and Thanksgiving being the biggest times to eat it.

Candy corn was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger, and first manufactured by the Wunderle Candy Company. The Goelitz Candy company was the first to manufacture mass quantities around the turn of the century.

SU OL Denzel Ward Medically Disqualified Due to Lingering Foot Pain (DO; Schwedelson)

Syracuse redshirt freshman offensive lineman Denzel Ward has been medically disqualified because of lingering foot pain, SU Athletics announced Thursday evening.

Ward never played in a game for the Orange and the disqualification also includes any other contact sport at Syracuse University. Ward’s condition requires surgery, according to the release.

About two weeks ago, SU sophomore quarterback AJ Long was medically disqualified due to multiple concussions.

Scouting Report on Florida State Seminoles (thejuice; Cheng)

Syracuse travels down south to take on No. 17 Florida State on Saturday. Here’s a quick look at the game:

SHOCKING LOSS: It’s been dubbed “Kick Six: The Sequel.” With 6 seconds remaining in Saturday’s matchup between Florida State and Georgia Tech, the Seminoles’ Roberto Aguayo (perhaps the best kicker in the country) attempted a 56-yard field goal to give FSU the win. But Patrick Gamble blocked the kick and Lance Austin scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 78-yards for the game winning score. “He happened to be in the right place at the right time and made a great play by picking the ball up and running it back,” GT head coach Paul Johnson said. It was a rare regular season loss for Florida State, whose playoff hopes are in jeopardy, but still alive. “You can get in with one loss, that’s been proven,” FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said.

SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES: Notre Dame transfer quarterback Everett Golson has been solid, but not spectacular, in his first season under center with the ‘Noles. On the plus side, Golson has thrown for 11 touchdowns to just one interception (though that one interception was a costly turnover against GT). But Golson has also struggled in the red zone, where he is completing under 50 percent of his passes. But Syracuse catches a break, with Dalvin Cook out with an ankle injury. Cook powered the FSU offense with over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. On defense, Jalen Ramsey is one of the elite defensive backs in the country. The 2014 All-American was named a semifinalist for the Jim Thrope Award, and leads the Seminoles in pass breakups (8) and is fifth on the team in tackles (25).

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: Florida State leads the overall series 7-1. The last time these two teams met was in the 2014 season, with the ‘Noles winning 38-20. FSU quarterback Jameis Winston completed 30 of 36 passes for 317 yards and three TDs. AJ Long threw for 167 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

GAME INFORMATION: Saturday, Oct. 31 at 12 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fl. TV: ABC.

Injuries and Inexperience Have Plagued FSU's OL (orlandosentinel.com; Sonnone)

FSU has started eight different offensive linemen this season, although that is not necessarily by design.

Injuries back in preseason camp delayed the progress of some projected starters – like Chad Mavety and Derrick Kelly. FSU’s offensive line is now struggling to stay healthy in the second half of the season, leading to inconsistent play as the group tries to develop continuity.

“That’s been really tough. You see that, and the chemistry and communication issues,” FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said. “That’s the key. It’s hard to do. That has been as much as I’ve had tested in a while, that’s for sure.”

Left tackle Roderick Johnson has been a constant for FSU, but at least two different players have filled every other position on the line at some time this season. As a result, linemen allowed an exorbitant amount of pressure on passing plays in recent weeks, and have accumulated a combined eight false-start penalties in the past two games.

The mounting injuries were clear during Tuesday’s practice, as projected starters Kareem Are (leg) and Derrick Kelly (leg) sat out. Are is expected back this week but Kelly’s status is up in the air.

Promising true freshman Cole Minshew – who Fisher pegged to contribute this season – is also out with a concussion after missing most of the season with a nagging ankle injury.

FSU Looks to Correct Errors Against Syracuse, Overcome Loss of Cook (tbo.com; AP)

For the first time in three years, Florida State is coming off a regular-season loss. The challenge for coach Jimbo Fisher and the No. 17-ranked Seminoles is to prevent the setback from having a negative snowball effect.

Florida State’s 28-game Atlantic Coast Conference win streak was snapped with a 22-16 loss at Georgia Tech on Saturday.

“You say you wish you could win them all, but that’s part of it. You’ve got to adjust and go,” said Fisher, whose team plays Syracuse in Tallahassee on Saturday.

“One loss can’t become two. But you’ve got to remember the things, you made mistakes and why you made mistakes and you’ve got to correct them.”

The biggest mistakes Fisher will look to correct are inefficiencies in the red zone: the Seminoles need to score more touchdowns to finish drives and cut down on penalties when they get inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Cook will miss game against Syracuse

Florida State’s Dalvin Cook, the nation’s second-leading rusher, will miss Saturday afternoon’s game against Syracuse because of an ankle injury.

Cook injured his left ankle in the Seminoles’ loss to Georgia Tech. He had been affected by a hamstring injury the past three games.

Through seven games, Cook has 1,037 yards rushing with 11 touchdowns and is averaging 8.2 yards per carry.

With Cook out, Johnathan Vickers and Jacques Patrick will get the carries for the Seminoles.

'I Still Dream About Him': After 25 Years, Fierce Devotion for Slain Investigator Wallie Howard Jr. (PS; Kirst)

If you seek living memory of Wallie Howard Jr., the little house on Ashworth Place in Syracuse is a treasury. As a child, Wallie saw it as a second home: There is a stump, in a garden near the front door, that's all that's left of a tree planted by Wallie and a cousin, Ricky Howard, when they were little boys.

Nate and Edith lost their original home on Ashworth to the 1960s demolition that claimed much of the old African-American enclave in the 15th Ward. Forced to move, they went a half-block away, and then stayed put. Nate is a Navy veteran. He and Edith left Georgia in 1953, traveling with a friend - another veteran named Frank Donaldson - who told them there were jobs in Rochester and Syracuse.

They wanted to find a place where "if you wanted to work, you could make a living," said Nate, 89. By the time they reached Syracuse, the universal joint was shot on Nate's car, and they had to leave it at a garage on East Fayette Street.

Coyle's comments in that article make it sound like Scott's job is very much safe, barring an absolute disaster over the final 5 games. I realize those are not new comments but as Mink points out, Shafer has checked off every box other than wins, and Coyle recognizes how young the team is and how hard they're playing.

Syracuse has now lost three straight games it could — and maybe should — have won. But while the Orange have an identical 3-4 record after seven games to last season, there are signs of real improvement.

Syracuse is averaging 8 more points per game than last year. Despite major turnover on defense, its three-and-out rate, takeaway rate and TD rate are virtually unchanged. A team that opened the year with seemingly little foundation to build upon now appears to have its QB of the future. This is all progress.

It’s easy to let the output cloud your opinion of the input, but even if that progress may not be happening as fast as fans would like, it’s not like another coach has a foolproof plan to do better.

Or, to sum this story up more succinctly, be careful what you wish for. The next Greg Robinson is out there.

I just realized that David Hale got his Masters degree in Journalism at SU.
Now I understand the positivity all season.

That is how I read it as well. Good.
