Welcome to National Strawberry Ice Cream Day!

Today is National Strawberry Ice Cream Day! The ice cream we know and love today evolved from ancient flavored ices. As early as 3000 BC, people in China served their guests sweet juices mixed with ice or snow.

While fruity ice cream flavors are still popular today, vanilla and chocolate are the clear favorites. According to a survey conducted by the International Ice Cream Association, strawberry is the third most popular ice cream flavor, favored by 5.3% of the population.

Did you know that Dolley Madison served strawberry ice cream at President Madison’s second Inaugural Ball in 1813? Treat yourself to a delicious bowl (or two) to celebrate National Strawberry Ice Cream Day!

Former SU Football Player Wins Prestigious 'Tom Osborne Legacy Award' (PS; Poliquin)

He has forever been what some folks might call a jumbo shrimp, a true myth, a genuine replicant. Yeah, that's what the stereotypists would say of Jim Ridlon, so clearly confused, so much the pair of tight slacks. He's an oxymoron.

He was a football player talented enough to suit up in the Cotton Bowl for Syracuse University back in '57, good enough to become an All-Pro safety with the Dallas Cowboys, and smart enough to have been asked in his retirement to serve as an assistant coach with those Cowboys, as well as the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets.

But wait. Ridlon, a professor of painting, sculpture and design in SU's College of Visual and Performing Arts between 1965-2000, has also been a celebrated artist whose work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in such faraway ports of call as Italy and Brazil and India, never mind across so much of North America.

Hmmm. Football … the arts. The arts … football.

NCAA Convention Big Vote Makes B12/B1G Happy, ACC and AAC Wanna-Be-Defectors Sad (TNIAAM; Wall)

The NCAA Convention usually means some changes in rules and policies which impact college athletics, and yesterday was no different. As expected the NCAA approved a proposal to amend the requirements for FBS conferences to hold football conference championship games. This amendment seems to open the door for the Big 12 to hold a conference title game without expanding to 12 teams. It doesn't meet the flexibility that the ACC was seeking, so Syracuse Orange fans shouldn't look for any re-alignment in the near future. It's also the reason why the ACC was one of two conferences to vote against the proposal.

SU Soccer Players Julian Buescher and Ben Polk Selected in 1st Round of MLS Superdraft (DO; Grossman)

Syracuse lost two of its biggest offensive threats in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, with both midfielder Julian Buescher and forward Ben Polk selected to go pro.

Buescher had a breakout campaign after a lackluster freshman season to help SU reach the College Cup for the first time in program history. The sophomore midfielder’s 11 assists tied him for the most in the Atlantic Coast Conference and he finished second on the Orange with 27 points.

Buescher accepted a Generation Adidas contract to become eligible for the draft as an underclassman. He was drafted No. 11 overall by D.C. United. Polk was taken 20th by the Portland Timbers with the last pick of the first round. Syracuse announced in a press release on Jan. 7 that Polk, a junior, had exhausted his NCAA eligibility after his one Division I season.

Polk’s Syracuse career lasted only one season after transferring from Herkimer Community College, where he scored an astounding 33 goals in 19 games in 2014.

Let's just call this the low water mark for the Shafer>Babers transition.

No where to go but up. Hope Babers reads that and gets PO'd.
